Special Tool(s) Removal 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 3. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 4. Remove the manual control outer lever nut and manual control outer lever. 2004 Ford Truck Ranger 2WD V6-4.0L VIN E 5. Remove the screws and the digital TR sensor. Installation 1. Install the digital TR sensor and loosely install the screws. 2. CAUTION: Tightening one screw before tightening the other may cause the sensor to bind or become damaged. NOTE: The manual lever must be in the NEUTRAL position. Using the special tool, align the digital TR sensor and tighten screws in an alternating sequence. 3. REMOVAL NOTE: The oil pump and valve body are removed as an assembly. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove battery, battery tray, and remote air cleaner. 2. Position supply hoses, vacuum hoses, and wiring away from pump and valve body cover. 3. Remove shift lever. 4. On models equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) , remove splash shield cover, then disconnect brake reservoir hose and cap to prevent contamination. 5. On all models, remove EGR bracket attaching bolts, then install lifting eye. 6. Remove throttle body bracket attaching bolt, install lifting eye, then using suitable equipment support engine. 7. Remove lefthand transaxle mount. 8. Remove transaxle side pan upper attaching bolts. 9. Raise and support vehicle. 10. Remove lefthand front wheel and tire assembly. 11. Remove inner fender cover and position aside, then disconnect ride height sensor. 12. Remove rear transaxle mount attaching bolt. 13. Loosen but do not remove two lefthand subframe attaching bolts. 14. Remove two engine support mount attaching bolts. 15. Remove four lefthand engine support attaching bolts, then remove the engine support. 16. Position suitable drain pan, then remove remaining transaxle side pan attaching bolts and remove pan. 17. Using suitable screwdriver, place manual shift shaft in Park position. 18. Disconnect upper bulkhead electrical connector wiring retainer clip from valve body. 19. Disconnect electrical connectors 20. Remove valve body attaching bolts, then disengage linkage and remove valve body. NOTE: Do not remove oil pump cover attaching bolts. INSTALLATION 1. Install new pump and valve body to chain cover gasket. 2. Slide pump and valve body onto pump shaft. 3. Rotate pump and valve body assembly toward dash panel, then engage manual valve link with manual valve. 4. Slightly rotate pump and valve body assembly to engage oil pump shaft splines with oil pump rotor splines. Valve body should slide flush with chain cover. A suitable 7/8 inch deep well socket on crankshaft pulley may be required for complete engagement. 5. On models less anti-skid, if engagement is not as indicated in step 4, proceed as follows: a. Remove manual valve from valve body. b. Rotate assembly to allow full engagement, up to 360° . c. After full engagement, return assembly to installed position, then install manual valve. Removal Procedure 1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting. 2. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement- Front. 3. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Rear. 4. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case. 5. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connectors. 6. Remove the electrical connectors from the transfer case motor/encoder. 9. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt securing the left side support brace to the transmission. 10. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt and stud securing the left side support brace to the transfer case 11. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the two bolts securing the right side support brace to the transmission and transfer case. 12. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission 13. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 14. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. 15. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 16. Remove and discard the gasket. Installation Procedure 1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Use sealer GM P/N 12346004 in order to hold the gasket in place. 2. Raise and position the transfer case to the vehicle Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft) . 4. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft)

1. To confirm the client’s complaint, test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably with a slight incline. Set the cruise control between 35 and 40 mph, and monitor the engine rpm using the vehicle’s tachometer, or use the HDS to take a snapshot of the engine rpm. 2. If the engine speed fluctuates several hundred rpm while maintaining a constant vehicle speed, disconnect the EGR valve and retest the vehicle. •If the fluctuation is gone, refer to the EGR troubleshooting in the service manual. •If the engine rpm still fluctuates, and the transmission does not have any other symptoms (shifting problems, slipping, transmission DTCs) go to step 3. 3. Drain the transmission fluid, then strain it through a paint strainer. •If you find little or no contamination in the strainer, the ATF is OK, even if it smells burnt, is discolored, and/or the magnetic drain plug has small chips, flakes, or metal fuzz on it. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A . •If you find large amounts of contamination (pieces of metal or friction material) in the strainer, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B . REPAIR PROCEDURE A 1. Remove the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Install the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 3. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 4. Do the idle learn procedure: •Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off. •Start the engine, and let it run until it reaches its normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles twice). •Let the engine idle with the throttle fully closed for 10 minutes. REPAIR PROCEDURE B Follow the IN-WARRANTY EXCHANGE steps in service bulletin 90-009, Automatic Transmission In- Warranty Exchange Program , to order a remanufactured A/T, replace the failed A/T, and return the failed A/T core. 1. Remove the transmission: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Clean the transmission cooler. Refer to service bulletin 89-015, ATF Cooler Cleaner . 3. Install a remanufactured transmission: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 4. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 5. Install the Cody Hitch in a Toyota Tundra as instructed in the owner’s manual with the following changes: The Tundra installation kit extension tubes have U-Bolt securing plates and U-Bolts in place of the pins and end plates described in the owner’s manual for other makes. The U-Bolt plates should be installed into the hitch center beam so that the plate brace is up and the flat part of the plate is down and will rest on the truck frame (figure 1). figure 1 As noted in the owner’s manual, additional clearance between frame and bed for ease of installation can be gained by loosening the bed bolts. In the case of the Tundra, loosening the bolts enough so that the bed can be easily pushed up ½-¾ inch over the axle makes installation significantly easier. To provide necessary clearance for the hitch beam, the exhaust heat shield directly over the rear axle should be removed. After hitch is assembled and placed on frame rails (figure 1), install centering bolt through frame and U-Bolt plate, then a U-Bolt on each side of the bumper stop (figure 2). figure 2 (OVER) After installation, with the ball turned down in the stowed position, be certain that it will not interfere with brake lines or wiring mounted on the axle before the axle contacts its bumper stops. In most cases this is not a problem but if in your installation there is a possibility of interference, adjusting the brake line bracket slightly should take care of any possible problem. Be sure to retighten the bed bolts and any other bolts that were loosened in the installation process

WARNING A SIBS® unit must not be contaminated with any external matter that may adversely affect its operation and reliability Suggestions: • Inspect each brake and supplied items against the packing list included in the shipment. • Ensure all items are included as described. • Ensure all components remain in their original packaging until required for assembly. • Thoroughly read the Service Manual. Familiarize yourself with the tools required and prepare them for use; familiarize yourself with the parts of the brake and the process required for fitting each brake and control system. • Ensure complete cleanliness of all brake components and the working environment around the vehicle. • Ensure no contamination of the brake assemblies occurs during installation. • Follow the points in the manual as described; if you are not sure – check the Manual. • Place each brake close to the vehicle adjacent to the axle where the brake is to be fitted, ensuring that they cannot by contaminated by any foreign material. Preparation Make sure all the tools, equipment and brake components are readily available. Before starting installation, check that: 1. the battery is disconnected 2. the vehicle is standing safely on a hoist 3. the original Toyota brakes have been removed (refer to Toyota manual): a. remove rear axle shaft assemblies b. if fitting fronts, remove the front steering knuckle assemblies 4. the handbrake cable and lever have been removed 5. the required amount of SIBS® fluid is available 6. an empty drain pan is available

Programming software update. SERVICE PROCEDURE Engine Control Module Update – Programming (Flashing) Tip: When performing the update programming procedure, ALL DTCs for all systems are erased. DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the update programming procedure first. The following “Update – Programming” (flashing) process may overwrite any “TUNED” ECM programming. A “TUNED” ECM is described as any ECM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Volkswagen of America, Inc. If you encounter a vehicle with a “Tuned” ECM, prior to performing the “Update – Programming” (flashing) procedure: Your Dealership should place the vehicle owner on notice in writing, that their ECM was found to have been tuned, and that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Volkswagen of America, Inc. warranties. For any repair requested by the owner under warranty or outside warranty that requires update programming, which will automatically wipe out the “Tuning” program, your Dealership should advise the owner of the above and get Owner’s written consent (see attached Control Module Tuning form) to the update programming procedure. Figure 1-1 Spicer axles are identified with a manufacturing date and complete part numbers stamped on the right- hand tube. The part number may also appear on a metal tag attached to the cover plate by the cover screws, depending upon the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer. The part number, consisting of six digits reading from left to right, is the basic number for identifying the particular axle assembly. The seventh digit following the dash will identify ratio, differential, and end yoke options used in the assembly. The next group of numbers is the manufacturing date of the axle and is interpreted as follows. The first number is the month, the second number is the day of the month, the third number is the year, the fourth is the line that built the axle, and the letter is the shift. NOTE It is recommended that when referring to the axle, the complete part number and build date be obtained. To do this, it may be necessary to wipe or scrape off dirt, etc., from the axle housing. If the axle is unique on design such that the unit cannot be identified in the standard manner as described above, refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s service and/or parts manual for proper identification. SERVICING COMPONENTS NOT COVERED IN THIS MANUAL Service procedures for some components may not be covered in this manual because they are unique to the vehicle application. Refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s service manual for servicing those components. (e.g. brakes, hubs, rotors, and wheel end components). VEHICLE STORAGE OR PROLONGED INOPERATION If the vehicle has not been operated on a regular daily basis, it is recommended that the vehicle be operated at least once every two weeks. The vehicle should be moved far enough to cause the drivetrain components to make several complete revolutions. This procedure will help assure that all internal components receive adequate amount of lubrication to help reduce component deterioration caused by an undesirable environment (e.g. high humidity).
