SUBJECT: TIMING CONNECTOR LOCATION CHANGE MODELS: 1994 CHEVROLET AND GMC C/K TRUCKS WITH GASOLINE ENGINES The timing connector, which can be disconnected to return engine timing to base for adjustment purposes, has been moved from the engine compartment to inside the cab. This new location is not currently reflected in the Service or Owner’s Manual. The new location is under the dash directly below the glove compartment. The tan/black wire is routed for a short distance outside of a large wiring harness. This large harness is routed between the heater blower motor and evaporator case. The timing connector is taped to the wire bundle (Figure 1)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required Multimeter . Wiring diagram. Test requirements The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 fuses OK. Battery voltage at least 12.5 volts. All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster, switched off. Vehicles with automatic transmission, shift selector lever into position “P” or “N” . A/C switched off. Ground (GND) connections between engine/transmission/chassis OK. Ignition switched off. Test procedure Perform a preliminary check to verify the customers complaint. Refer to Preliminary Check Start diagnosis The Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 detects RPM and reference marks. Without an engine speed signal, the engine will not start. If the engine speed signal fails while the engine is running, the engine will stop immediately Function test Connect the scan tool. Switch the ignition on. Using the scan tool, check the engine speed: End diagnosis and switch ignition off. If the specified value was not obtained: Checking internal resistance Disconnect the gray Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 electrical harness connector 7 arrow 7 . Using a multimeter , check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 terminals 2 to 3 7 see insert 7 for resistance. Specified value: 0.7 to 1000 kOhm Check Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 terminals 1 to 2 and 1 to 3 for short circuits. Specified value: ? (infinity) If any of the specified values are not obtained: Replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 . Refer to Engine Mechanical, Fuel Injection and Ignition 7 Repair Group 13 . If the specified values are obtained: Checking wiring If the manufacturers test box is being used. Perform the following step. Install the test box Adapter F/VAG1598 (68 Pin) VAG1598/22 . An intermittent may be caused by any of the following conditions: Thoroughly check any circuitry that is suspected of causing the intermittent complaint. Refer to Intermittents and Poor Connections Diagnosis in Wiring Systems. If a repair is necessary, refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems. Test Description The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table. 2. This test checks if communication can be established between the scan tool and the VTD. If the scan tool cannot communicate with the VTD, refer to Diagnostic System Check – Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent. 3. This test checks for any opens in the serial data circuit between the VCM and the VTD. This also checks for any intermittent malfunctions associated with the serial data circuit. 4. This step is to determine if the condition that set the DTC is still present. The engine must be cranked in order to set this DTC. If the condition is present, the engine will start and then stall, indicating the VCM is disabling fuel. 7. Use a scan tool to clear and check for any DTCs in all the modules connected to the Class 2 Serial Data circuit (VCM, VTD, ATC, and BCM). the module itself. After repairing the cause of DTC P1626, clear all DTCs from the systems capable of storing this DTC and DTC U1192. 1 Important: Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool Capture Info to save the Freeze Frame and Failure Records for reference. The control module’s data is deleted once the Clear Info function is used. Did you perform the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check? — Go to Step 2 Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check 2 1. Install the scan tool. 2. Turn ON the ignition leaving the engine OFF. 3. Attempt to establish communications with the VTD (Passlock) Control Module. Does the scan tool communicate with the VTD (Passlock) Control Module? — Go to Step 3 Go to Diagnostic System Check – Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent 3 Check the Class 2 Serial Data circuit for the following intermittent conditions: Did you find a problem? • An open in the Class 2 Serial Data circuit between the VCM and the VTD (Passlock) Control Module. • A short to ground. • A short to voltage. • Loose or damaged terminals at the DLC, VCM or the VTD (Passlock) Control Module. — Go to Step 6 Go to Step 4 4 1. Turn OFF the ignition. 2. Connect or install any connectors or components that were disconnected or removed. 3. Clear all DTCs using a scan tool. 4. Turn OFF the ignition for 15 seconds. 5. Attempt to start the engine. Does DTC P1626 reset? — Go to Diagnostic System Check – Theft Deterrent in Theft Deterrent Go to Step 5 5 This DTC is intermittent. Are any additional DTCs stored? — Go to the applicable DTC table Go to Diagnostic Aids 6 Repair the circuit as necessary. Refer to Wiring Repairs or Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems. Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper) Notes Intake Manifold Replacement – Upper Removal Procedure Important: The upper intake does not have to be removed to remove the lower intake manifold. 1. Disconnect the breather tube at the air cleaner outlet duct 2. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct retaining wingnut. 3. Disconnect the IAT sensor harness connector 4. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct from the throttle body. 5. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body 6. Remove the accelerator cable from the accelerator control cable bracket. 7. Disconnect the cruise control cable, if equipped from the throttle shaft and the accelerator cable bracket. 8. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the intake manifold for the vacuum tank. 9. Remove the power brake booster vacuum hose. 10. Disconnect the following electrical connectors: * The A/C compressor clutch (1) * The A/C compressor cutoff switch (5), if equipped * The Throttle Position (TP) sensor (2) * The Idle Air Control (IAC) motor (3) 11. Disconnect the following electrical connectors: * The fuel meter body assembly (1) * The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor(3) * The EVAP canister purge solenoid valve (2) 12. Remove the engine wire harness clip from the accelerator cable bracket. 13. Move the engine wiring harness aside. 14. Remove the accelerator cable bracket from the throttle body and the intake manifold. 15. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cable bracket from the throttle body. Leave the accelerator and cruise control cables on the bracket16. Remove the PCV valve hose assembly from the intake manifold and the valve rocker arm cover. 17. Remove the bracket for the engine wiring harness from the intake manifold stud. 18. Remove the fuel lines from the fuel meter body assembly. 19. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve.
