1. Verify that the power steering pump reservoir is full. 2. Verify that the accessory drive belt is in good condition and that the pulleys are not bent or damaged. 3. Verify proper belt tension and operation of the belt tensioner. 4. Check for power steering hose ground out conditions. 5. Check for good engine idle and correct engine RPM. 6. Check to see that the rear transaxle mount does not have a plastic assembly aid installed which is used Subject: Steering Vibration/Shudder/Moan During Parking Maneuvers on Dry Pavement (Install Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and/or Return (Outlet) Hose Assembly) Models: 1995-99 Buick Riviera 1997-2001 Buick Park Avenue, Ultra 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville • 1995-98 Buick Riviera • 1997-98 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 1999 Buick Riviera • 1999-2001 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre • 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville • If fluid level is low, fill and check for leaks. • If power steering system has air in the system, perform the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure as described in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual. Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the LH front wheel/tire assembly. 4. Remove the LH lower splash shield. 5. Remove the lower radiator air deflector (engine splash shield, if installed.

TROUBLE SHOOTING NOTE: See TROUBLE SHOOTING – BASIC PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. 1) If a no-start condition exists and battery is known to be good, connect test light or voltmeter between starter solenoid terminal No. 50 and ground. See Figs. 6 and 7. 2) Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light or voltmeter does not indicate voltage, check main fusible links and large ampere main fuses in engine compartment relay box. If fusible links and fuses are okay, see IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST and/or STARTER RELAY TEST under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. ON-VEHICLE TESTING NOTE: Before testing, ensure battery is fully charged, battery cables and terminal ends are tight and clean, and engine grounds are secure. CLUTCH START SWITCH TEST 1) Switch is located above clutch pedal on bracket. Disconnect wiring harness connector from switch. 2) Connect ohmmeter probes to switch terminals. Depress clutch pedal. If continuity does not exist, adjust or replace clutch start switch. If continuity exists, check circuit to starter relay for open, and check starter relay. See STARTER RELAY TEST. CLUTCH START CANCEL SWITCH TEST 1) Locate switch in left dash panel. Remove right lower instrument panel to access switch connector. Disconnect wiring harness connector from switch pigtail connector. See Fig. 1. 2) Connect negative lead of ohmmeter to terminal No. 1. Ensure continuity does not exist between connector terminals No. 1 and 2, terminals No. 1 and 3, and terminals No. 2 and 3. Check operation of switch by connecting jumper wires from 12-volt battery. Connect positive lead to terminal No. 3 and negative battery lead to terminal No. 1. 3) Using ohmmeter, ensure continuity does not exist between connector terminals No. 1 and 2 until switch button is pushed. When switch button is pushed, switch light should come on and continuity should exist. Disconnect battery and ensure continuity does not exit between terminals No. 1 and 2. IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. For 1996 4Runner, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. 1995 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Removedriver’s lower instrument panel cover. Remove upper and lower steering column covers if needed. Locate ignition switch wiring harness 8-pin connector. See Figs. 2-3. 2) With ignition switch in LOCK position, there should be no continuity between any terminals. With ignition switch in ACC position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 3. With ignition switch in ON position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2 and 3, and between terminals No. 7 and 8. 3) With ignition switch in START position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 4 and 6, and between terminals No. 7 and 8. If continuity is not as specified, replace switch.

ADJUSTMENTS WINDOWS Remove door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Loosen bolts holding window to regulator. Raise window fully, seating window in frame. Tighten bolts. Install door trim panel. TROUBLE SHOOTING POWER WINDOWS On Dakota, inspect circuit breaker No. 20 (20-amp) in junction block. On Durango inspect circuit breaker No. 21 (25-amp) in junction block. On all models, junction block is located on left end of instrument panel. Inspect fuse No. 9 (40-amp on Dakota, 50-amp on Durango) in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in left front corner of engine compartment. Inspect power window system ground circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . SYSTEM TESTS ALL WINDOWS INOPERATIVE Dakota 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver’s front power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 3 (Black wire) at driver power window switch wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between driver power window 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango switch connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . 3. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Tan wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, check driver power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire between driver power window switch connector and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Durango 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver’s front power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. 3. Check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 5 (Black wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Tan wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, check driver’s power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire between driver power window switch connector and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . SERVICE PROCEDURE Replace Starter, Add Cleaner 1. Replace the starter motor. • Use the part number from the Parts Information section of this bulletin. • Refer to section SC, “STARTING SYSTEM, Removal and Installation” in the applicable Nissan Electronic Service Manual (ESM). 2. Add one full can of Nissan In-Tank Fuel System Cleaner to the fuel. NOTE: If the fuel tank is less than ¾ full, instruct the customer to fill the tank as soon as it is convenient after the repair. Driving with the Cleaner installed and low fuel level will not harm the fuel system or engine, but will reduce the effectiveness of the cleaning process. 3. A/T Interlock System Circuit Diagram SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING 1. Press the brake pedal. Are the brake lights ON? YES -Go to step 2. NO -Repair faulty brake light circuit. 2. Connect the HDS to the DLC. Check engine speed and throttle position in the A/T data list. Is the engine speed at idle, and TPS about 0.5 V? YES -Go to step 3. NO -Repair engine speed or throttle position input. 3. Select SHIFT LOCK SOL TEST in MISC. TEST MENU, then carry out shift lock solenoid function test. Does the shift lock solenoid work properly? YES -System circuit is OK. Check the shift lock mechanism, if necessary. NO -Go to step 4. 4. Remove the center console (See CENTER CONSOLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ). 5. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid connector. 6. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). 7. Measure the voltage between No. 1 terminal of the shift lock solenoid connector and body ground. Fig. 3: Measuring Voltage Between No. 1 Terminal Of Shift Lock Solenoid Connector & Body Ground Is there battery voltage? YES -Go to step 8. NO -Check for blown No. 21 fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box. If the fuse is OK, repair open in the wire between the shift lock solenoid connector and the under-dash fuse/relay box. 8. Shift the shift lever into the P position, and press the brake pedal. Do not press the accelerator. 9. Measure the voltage between shift lock solenoid connector terminals while pressing the brake pedal Fig. 4: Measuring Voltage Between Shift Lock Solenoid Connector Terminals Is there battery voltage? YES -Check the shift lock mechanism. If the mechanism is OK, replace the shift lock solenoid (see Shift Lock Solenoid Replacement ). NO -Check for poor or loose PCM connector terminal E2 at the PCM, and check for an open in the wire between PCM connector terminal E2 and shift lock solenoid connector. If the connection and wire is OK, substitute a known-good PCM and recheck. KEY INTERLOCK SYSTEM CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING

1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), under lower left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and Controller Antilock Brake (CAB) module. If scan tool is able to identify or communicate with ACM and CAB, go to next step. If scan tool is not able to identify or communicate with ACM and/or CAB, perform appropriate DTC or symptom test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION and SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION tables under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. 2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray 26-pin Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. CTM is located behind left side kick panel. Ensure interior lights are off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminals No. 1 and 16 (Black/Light Green wires) and No. 2 (Black wire). See Fig. 5 . If resistance is 10 ohms or less on each ground circuit, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms on any ground circuit, check for an open between appropriate CTM connector terminal and ground. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. 3. Disconnect Gray 12-pin CTM connector C3. Using test light connected to ground, probe Gray 12-pin CTM connector C3 terminals No. 1 (Red/Tan wire) and No. 6 (Red/Light Green wire). See Fig. 8 . If test light illuminates on both circuits, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate on both circuits, check for open in appropriate circuit between power distribution center and CTM. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. 4. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, ensure there is PCI BUS communication with other modules (besides the ACM and CAB). If scan tool is able to identify or communicate with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool is not able to identify or communicate with all modules, refer to appropriate communications symptom for diagnosis. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. 5. Connect Scope Input Cable (CH7058) to channel one connector on scan tool. Connect Cable-To-Probe Adapter (CH7062) and Black and Red test probes to scope input cable. Connect Black test probe to ground. Connect Red test probe to PCI BUS circuit at Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 10 (Violet/Yellow wire). 6. Using scan tool, select PEP MODULE TOOLS, LAB SCOPE, LIVE DATA. Select 12 VOLT SQUARE WAVE. Press F2 for SCOPE. Press F2 and use DOWN arrow to set voltage scale to 20 volts. Press F2 again when complete. Turn ignition on. If reading on lab scope toggles between zero and 7.5 volts, go to next step. If reading on lab scope does not toggle between zero and 7.5 volts, repair open in PCI BUS circuit (Violet/Yellow wire). 7. Replace CTM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor electrical connector and inspect sensor and connector terminals for corrosion and/or evidence of engine coolant. ^If terminals are corroded or if there is evidence of engine coolant proceed to step 4. ^If terminals are not corroded and there is no evidence of engine coolant, reconnect the electrical connector and continue to next step. 2. Perform one or both of the following checks to determine whether the engine coolant temperature sensor is providing the correct temperature indication. If engine coolant temperature sensor reading does not pass either of the above tests, continue with next step. ^If engine is at ambient temperature (vehicle has been sitting overnight or not started for several hours), use a Scan tool to compare the inlet air temperature ( IAT ) to the engine coolant temperature ( ECT ). These two readings should be within 2°C (4°F) of each other. ^If engine is at operating temperature, install a thermometer in the coolant recovery reservoir. With the engine running and A/C off, use a Scan tool to compare the engine coolant temperature sensor reading to the thermometer reading. These two readings should be within 8°C (15°F) of each other If engine coolant temperature sensor reading passes both of the tests above, refer to appropriate symptom diagnostic chart in the Engine/Emissions Controls Section of applicable Engine Service Manual. 3. Turn ignition off. 4Remove coolant surge tank cap. 5. Drain at least 1.9 L (2 Qt.) of engine coolant from the cooling system by opening radiator drain valve or removing engine drain plug. Collect engine coolant in a container. 6. Disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor electrical connector. 7. Remove engine coolant temperature sensor from cylinder head. 8. Obtain replacement engine coolant temperature sensor (P/N 21025106). 9. Use appropriate tap to clean sensor mounting hole of any thread sealant residue. 10. Install engine coolant temperature sensor in cylinder head. Torque: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) 11. Inspect harness connector terminals for corrosion and/or evidence of engine coolant. If harness connector terminals are corroded or there is evidence of engine coolant, the harness connector must be replaced with new connector (P/N 12117087-includes: connector, terminals, wires, and splice sleeves). 12. Connect engine coolant temperature sensor connector. 13. Transfer engine coolant drained in step 5 into coolant surge tank. If necessary fill coolant surge tank to the FULL COLD range with 50/50 solution of correct type of antifreeze and clean water. 14. Start engine and check for leaks. 15. Run engine until upper radiator hose is hot, then add additional coolant if needed to bring the level to the FULL COLD level (1991-early 1997) or within the Min./Max. cold range (late l997-2001). 16. Install coolant surge tank cap.
