1. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY (a) Align the pulley set key with the key groove of the timing pulley and slide on the timing pulley. (b) Slide on the timing pulley, facing the flange side inward. 2. INSTALL NO. 1 IDLER PULLEY AND NO.2 IDLER PULLEY (a) Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, install the No.1 idler pulley with the plate washer and bolt. Torque: 35 N·m (350 kgf·cm, 26 ft·lbf) (b) Check that the pulley bracket moves smoothly. (c) Install the No.2 idler pulley with the bolt. Torque: 40 N·m (400 kgf·cm, 30 ft·lbf) (d) Check that the pulley moves smoothly. 3. TEMPORARILY INSTALL TIMING BELT NOTICE: The engine should be cold. (a) Use the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the crankshaft and align the timing marks on the crankshaft timing pulley and on the oil pump body. (b) Remove any oil or water on the crankshaft timing pulley, idler pulley and water pump pulley, and keep them clean. NOTICE: Only wipe the pulleys; do not use any cleansing agent. (c) Align the installation mark on the timing belt with the drilled mark of the crankshaft timing pulley. (d) Install the timing belt on the crankshaft timing pulley, No.1 idler and water pump pulleys. 4. INSTALL TIMING BELT GUIDE Install the guide, facing the cup side outward


1. Disconnect negative battery cable from jumper terminal. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove accessory drive belt splash shield from right wheelwell. 2. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove right engine support assembly vertical bolts from bottom side of frame rail (timing belt end of engine). 3. Lower vehicle. Place floor jack under vehicle to support weight of engine and transaxle assembly. Remove 3 bolts attaching engine support assembly to engine block bracket. 4. Move the A/C drier aside with hoses attached. Remove coolant reservoir tank. Remove right engine support assembly. Remove 3 bolts attaching engine support bracket to engine block, and remove bracket. 5. Remove crankshaft vibration damper. Remove power steering pump (hoses attached) and bracket from engine block. Remove timing belt covers. 6. Rotate crankshaft to align camshaft and crankshaft timing marks. 7. If reusing old timing belt, mark timing belt direction of rotation for installation reference. Loosen timing belt automatic tensioner bolts. Remove timing belt. Remove automatic tensioner. Installation 2.5L VIN H (Cirrus, Sebring Convertible & Stratus) 1. Place automatic tensioner into vise, and SLOWLY compress plunger. When plunger is compressed into tensioner body, install locking pin through body and plunger holes to retain plunger until tensioner is installed. See Fig. 13 . 2. Index tensioner in vise the same direction as installed. This will ensure proper pin orientation when tensioner is installed in engine.

TIMING BELT Removal (ES 300) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right side front wheel. Remove right fender apron seal. Remove accessory drive belts. Lower vehicle. Disconnect engine coolant reservoir hose from water outlet. Disconnect ground strap connectors. 2. Remove engine moving control rod and engine mounting bracket No. 2 (right side), located near timing belt cover. Remove generator-to-engine bracket for access to timing belt covers. 3. Using Pulley Holder (09213-54015) or equivalent and Handle (09330-00021) or equivalent, hold crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley. Remove No. 1 and No. 2 timing belt covers and gaskets. See Fig. 1 . Remove transverse engine mounting bracket from front of engine. Note direction of timing belt guide installation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt guide. 4. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and washer in crankshaft. Using crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with timing mark on oil pump body. See Fig. 2 . 5. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets are aligned with timing mark on No. 3 timing belt cover. See Fig. 2 . If timing marks are not aligned, rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees). Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. 6. If reusing old belt, ensure there are 3 installation marks and front arrow marked on belt. See Fig. 3 . If not, place mating mark on belt where it contacts the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. Also, mark belt with arrow showing direction of rotation. 7. Alternately loosen 2 bolts, and remove timing belt tensioner and dust boot. DO NOT hold tensioner with push rod facing downward. Remove timing belt in the following sequence: No. 1 idler pulley, right camshaft sprocket (firewall side), No. 2 idler pulley, left camshaft sprocket (front of vehicle side), left camshaft sprocket (front of vehicle side), water pump pulley, then crankshaft sprocket


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT Removal (200SX & 300ZX) 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Release fuel pressure from system. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right wheel and engine side cover (if necessary). Drain cooling system. Remove cooling fan duct. Remove engine coolant reservoir. Remove actuator and remove radiator hoses. Do not allow coolant to contact drive belts. 2. Remove front upper and lower belt covers. See Fig. 1 . Remove drive belts and set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke. Remove idler bracket of compressor drive belt and crankshaft pulley. Remove timing belt by removing timing belt tensioner and return spring Inspection (200SX & 300ZX) Visually inspect condition of timing belt. Inspect for cracks, wear, breaks, and oil/coolant saturation. Installation (200SX & 300ZX) 1. Ensure that piston No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove valve covers and loosen all rocker shaft bolts. Do not bend timing belt. Install tensioner and return spring. 2. Turn tensioner clockwise and temporarily tighten lock nut. Install timing belt. Align White lines on timing belt with punch mark on camshaft pulleys and crankshaft pulley. Arrow on timing belt must be pointing toward front belt covers. 3. Using Allen wrench, slowly turn tensioner clockwise and counterclockwise 2 or 3 times. When camshafts and crankshaft marks are aligned, tighten tensioner lock nut. See Fig. 2 . Ensure that camshaft lobes are correctly positioned. Tighten rocker shaft bolts in 2 stages. 4. Refill and bleed air from cooling system. To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Adjust drive belts to proper tension


TIMING BELT REMOVAL / INSTALLATION 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor. 3. Remove the spark plug . 4. Remove the P/S oil pump and bracket with the oil hose still connected. 5. Remove in the order indicated in the table. 6. Install in the reverse order of removal. 7. Verify the air gap. 8. Start the engine and Zoom Sized for Print (1) Inspect for the pulleys and drive belt for runout and contact. (2) Verify the ignition timing . Crankshaft Pulley Removal Note * Hold the crankshaft by using the SST. CAUTION: The crankshaft position sensor rotor is on the rear of the crankshaft pulley, and can be damaged easily. Cylinder Head Cover Removal Note * Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts in two or three steps in the order shown. No.3 Engine Mount Rubber Removal Note 1. Suspend the engine by using the chain block. 2. Remove the No.3 engine mount rubber. Timing Belt Removal Note 1. Install the pulley lock bolt. 2. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks. 3. Turn the tensioner clockwise by using an Allen wrench. 4. Disconnect the tensioner spring from the hook pin. CAUTION: The following will damage the belt and shorten its life; forcefully twisting it, turning it inside out, or allowing oil or grease on it.
