Power Steering Belt REMOVAL POWER STEERING PUMP AND AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR BELT 1. Using a 17 mm wrench, rotate belt tensioner clockwise (Fig. 2) until belt can be removed from power steering pump pulley. Gently, release spring tension on tensioner. 2. Remove the drive belt (Fig. 3). Clean all foreign debris from belt pulley grooves. The belt pulleys must be free of oil, grease, and coolants before installing the drive belt. INSPECTION Belt replacement under any or all of the following conditions is required: ^Excessive wear ^Frayed cords ^Severe glazing Poly-V Belt system may develop minor cracks across the ribbed side (due to reverse bending). These minor cracks are considered normal and acceptable. Parallel cracks are not (Fig. 6). NOTE: Do not use any type of belt dressing or restorer on Poly-V Belts. INSTALLATION NOTE: When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves. POWER STEERING PUMP AND AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR BELT 1. Install the drive belt (Fig. 3) over all the pulleys except for the power steering pump pulley 2. After belt is installed, inspect belt length indicator marks (Fig. 7). The indicator mark should be within the minimum belt length and maximum belt length marks. Special Tool(s) Removal 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 3. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 4. Remove the manual control outer lever nut and manual control outer lever. 2004 Ford Truck Ranger 2WD V6-4.0L VIN E 5. Remove the screws and the digital TR sensor. Installation 1. Install the digital TR sensor and loosely install the screws. 2. CAUTION: Tightening one screw before tightening the other may cause the sensor to bind or become damaged. NOTE: The manual lever must be in the NEUTRAL position. Using the special tool, align the digital TR sensor and tighten screws in an alternating sequence. 3. REMOVAL NOTE: The oil pump and valve body are removed as an assembly. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove battery, battery tray, and remote air cleaner. 2. Position supply hoses, vacuum hoses, and wiring away from pump and valve body cover. 3. Remove shift lever. 4. On models equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) , remove splash shield cover, then disconnect brake reservoir hose and cap to prevent contamination. 5. On all models, remove EGR bracket attaching bolts, then install lifting eye. 6. Remove throttle body bracket attaching bolt, install lifting eye, then using suitable equipment support engine. 7. Remove lefthand transaxle mount. 8. Remove transaxle side pan upper attaching bolts. 9. Raise and support vehicle. 10. Remove lefthand front wheel and tire assembly. 11. Remove inner fender cover and position aside, then disconnect ride height sensor. 12. Remove rear transaxle mount attaching bolt. 13. Loosen but do not remove two lefthand subframe attaching bolts. 14. Remove two engine support mount attaching bolts. 15. Remove four lefthand engine support attaching bolts, then remove the engine support. 16. Position suitable drain pan, then remove remaining transaxle side pan attaching bolts and remove pan. 17. Using suitable screwdriver, place manual shift shaft in Park position. 18. Disconnect upper bulkhead electrical connector wiring retainer clip from valve body. 19. Disconnect electrical connectors 20. Remove valve body attaching bolts, then disengage linkage and remove valve body. NOTE: Do not remove oil pump cover attaching bolts. INSTALLATION 1. Install new pump and valve body to chain cover gasket. 2. Slide pump and valve body onto pump shaft. 3. Rotate pump and valve body assembly toward dash panel, then engage manual valve link with manual valve. 4. Slightly rotate pump and valve body assembly to engage oil pump shaft splines with oil pump rotor splines. Valve body should slide flush with chain cover. A suitable 7/8 inch deep well socket on crankshaft pulley may be required for complete engagement. 5. On models less anti-skid, if engagement is not as indicated in step 4, proceed as follows: a. Remove manual valve from valve body. b. Rotate assembly to allow full engagement, up to 360° . c. After full engagement, return assembly to installed position, then install manual valve. REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Raise the vehicle on an alignment rack (drive-on lift). 2. Verify the road tires are correctly sized and the tire tread is not excessively worn. Replace any worn tire before proceeding. Any new or old replacement tire should be equal to the original tires that came with the vehicle when it was new. Tire wear is not covered by the vehicle warranty. 3. Set the tire pressure for the FRONT TIRES to the following specification, regardless of the load being carried by the vehicle . Tire Size FRONT Tire Pressure LT235/80R17EorLT245/70R17E 448 Kpa (65 psi) LT265/70R17EorLT285/70R17E 414 Kpa (60 psi) 4. Set the tire pressure for the REAR TIRES as recommended for the vehicle configuration and load that is being carried at the time. Tire Size REAR Tire Pressure LT235/80R17EorLT245/70R17E Refer to the Tire Inflation Chart brochure in the Owners Manual or to the placards located either on the face of the driver’sdoor or on the driver’sside”B”pillar. Verify that the steering damper is operating correctly. a. Unbolt the end of the damper at the axle end. b. Cycle the damper rod by hand. c. There should be resistance to motion in both directions of the damper rod. d. Replace the damper if no resistance is present. 6. Verify both outer tie rod ends dustcovers are not worn. a. Attempt to rotate the dustcover by hand. b. If the dustcover on an outer tie rod end can be rotated, or is free and loose, then replace the tie rod (regardless of joint wear). 7. Inspect each outer tie rod end for internal wear. a. Maximum allowed wear (joint travel) fora tie rod end is 1.15 mm (0.045 in.). b. Install a dial indicator to the tie rod end (in-line with the vertical stud of the tie rod end). c. With a pry bar placed between the steering linkage and the axle tube, pry upwards while measuring the amount of joint travel (wear). d. Measure the amount of wear in the other outer tie rod end joint. e. If wear (joint travel) in either outer tie rod end is greater than 1.15 mm (0.045 in.), then replace the worn tie rod end. 8. Verify the torque on each outer tie rod end stud nut. The nut should be tightened to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.). 9. Make sure any worn outer tie rod ends have been replaced before proceeding further. 10. Verify all other steering linkage connections are tightened to their torque specifications.

Removal Procedure 1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting. 2. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement- Front. 3. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Rear. 4. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case. 5. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connectors. 6. Remove the electrical connectors from the transfer case motor/encoder. 9. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt securing the left side support brace to the transmission. 10. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt and stud securing the left side support brace to the transfer case 11. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the two bolts securing the right side support brace to the transmission and transfer case. 12. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission 13. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 14. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. 15. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 16. Remove and discard the gasket. Installation Procedure 1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Use sealer GM P/N 12346004 in order to hold the gasket in place. 2. Raise and position the transfer case to the vehicle Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft) . 4. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft)

1. To confirm the client’s complaint, test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably with a slight incline. Set the cruise control between 35 and 40 mph, and monitor the engine rpm using the vehicle’s tachometer, or use the HDS to take a snapshot of the engine rpm. 2. If the engine speed fluctuates several hundred rpm while maintaining a constant vehicle speed, disconnect the EGR valve and retest the vehicle. •If the fluctuation is gone, refer to the EGR troubleshooting in the service manual. •If the engine rpm still fluctuates, and the transmission does not have any other symptoms (shifting problems, slipping, transmission DTCs) go to step 3. 3. Drain the transmission fluid, then strain it through a paint strainer. •If you find little or no contamination in the strainer, the ATF is OK, even if it smells burnt, is discolored, and/or the magnetic drain plug has small chips, flakes, or metal fuzz on it. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A . •If you find large amounts of contamination (pieces of metal or friction material) in the strainer, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B . REPAIR PROCEDURE A 1. Remove the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Install the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 3. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 4. Do the idle learn procedure: •Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off. •Start the engine, and let it run until it reaches its normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles twice). •Let the engine idle with the throttle fully closed for 10 minutes. REPAIR PROCEDURE B Follow the IN-WARRANTY EXCHANGE steps in service bulletin 90-009, Automatic Transmission In- Warranty Exchange Program , to order a remanufactured A/T, replace the failed A/T, and return the failed A/T core. 1. Remove the transmission: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Clean the transmission cooler. Refer to service bulletin 89-015, ATF Cooler Cleaner . 3. Install a remanufactured transmission: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 4. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 5. Ensure all components remain in their original packaging until required for assembly. 3.1.4. Ensure vehicle stub shafts are clean, free from rust, dirt, corrosion or any foreign material. 3.1.5. Thoroughly read the Service Manual. Familiarize yourself with the tools required and prepare them for use; familiarise yourself with the parts of the brake and the process required for fitting each brake and control system. 3.1.6. Ensure complete cleanliness of all brake components and the working environment around the vehicle. 3.1.7. Ensure no contamination of the brake assemblies occurs during installation. 3.1.8. Follow the points in the manual as described; if you are not sure – check the Manual. 3.1.9. Place each brake close to the vehicle adjacent to the axle where the brake is to be fitted, ensuring that they cannot by contaminated by any foreign material.
