NOTE: Less than 80% of the coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement. 1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half to one turn counterclockwise to the first stop on the filler neck. When the pressure has been released, remove the pressure relief cap. 2. Raise and support the vehicle, For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 3. Remove the lower radiator cover. 4. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Drain the coolant. 5. Close the radiator draincock when finished. Filling and Bleeding with RADKITPLUS 1. Using the special tool, install the RADKITPLUS and follow the RADKITPLUS manufacturer’s instructions to fill and bleed the cooling system. Filling without RADKITPLUS CAUTION: Engine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and clean, drinkable water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system: * Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A. * Do not add Motorcraft Specialty Engine Coolant such as VC-2 or an equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D. Mixing coolants can degrade the coolant’s corrosion protection. * Do not add alcohol, methanol, or brine, or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. * Do not mix with recycled coolants unless they meet the requirements of Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A or WSS-M97B51-A1. Not all coolant recycling processes meet these Ford specifications. Use of such coolants can harm the engine and cooling system components. All engines 1. Install the lower radiator cover.

Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. With the key on, the engine off and the coolant level sensor disconnected from the vehicle wiring harness, observe the low coolant light: Subject: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On (Diagnose Low Coolant Level System Operation/Check Sensor for Oil Contamination) Models: 2000-2002 Buick Century, Regal 2000-2001 Chevrolet Lumina 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo 2000-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue • Light is on — Chassis wiring or instrument cluster concern. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

Draining and Filling Cooling System Notes Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining Procedure Important: Do NOT add any engine coolant supplement sealant pellets to the cooling system. Drain and refill the engine cooling system every 5 years or 240 000 km, (150,000 ml) , whichever occurs first. 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. 2. Remove and clean the coolant recovery reservoir. Caution: To avoid being burned, do not remove the radiator cap or surge tank cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system will release scalding fluid and steam under pressure if radiator cap or surge tank cap its removed while the engine and radiator are still hot. 3.1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detention tab. Do not press down while rotating pressure cap. 3.2. Wait until any residual pressure, indicated by a hissing sound, is relieved. 3.3. After all hissing stops, press down on the radiator cap and rotate the cap counterclockwise in order to remove the cap. Important: Recover and store used coolant in a used coolant holding tank and submit the used coolant for recycling on a regular basis. Do NOT pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is very toxic. Disposing of ethylene glycol into the sewer system or ground water is both illegal and ecologically unsound. 4. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock in order to collect all of the used coolant. 5. Open the radiator drain cock. If only partial cooling system draining is required, drain enough coolant to perform the procedure 6. Open the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing 2 full turns. 7. Open the air bleed valve above coolant pump 2 full turns. 8. Place a drain pan under the engine block drains in order to collect the used coolant. Important: Allow the coolant to drain completely

OIL PAN(A4 & A6) Removal (Lower Pan- A4 & A6) 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. 2. Remove engine noise insulator (undercover). See Fig. 12 . Drain engine oil. 3. Unbolt left and right swaybar stabilizer bracket bolts (4) from mounting bracket. See Fig. 98 . Lower swaybar stabilizer not more than 10cm (3.94 INCHES) and secure with heavy wire. 4. If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, unbolt oil cooler pipe (line) bracket from right side oil pan. 5. Remove lower oil pan. To install oil pan (lower), see INSTALLATION (LOWER OIL PAN- A4 & A6) . Installation (Lower Oil Pan- A4 & A6) 1. Ensure oil pan surfaces are clean and dry. Remove residual sealant from oil pan, if necessary, with hand drill and plastic brush instead of a flat scrapper. See Fig. 99 . Install gasket. 2. Install 2 bolts diagonal to each other (to hold up pan). Install the rest of the bolts and hand tighten. 3. Starting at center and moving outward, tighten lower oil pan to upper oil pan bolts to 10 N.m (89 INCH lbs.). Tighten oil pan drain plug 30 N.m (22 ft. lbs.). Wait 30 minutes before filling with engine oil. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING . Removal (Upper Oil Pan- A4 & A6) 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove oil dipstick. Unbolt oil dipstick tube at front of cylinder head. Remove oil dipstick tube. 2. Remove engine noise insulator (undercover). See Fig. 12 . Drain engine oil. 3. Move lock carrier into service position. See LOCK CARRIER . This will allow servicing of front engine components and facilitate removal of oil pan. 4. Open coolant expansion tank cap, drain cooling system at radiator. Open the coolant pump bearing housing drain plug. Located at bottom of block near transmission bell housing, drivers side of vehicle. See Fig. 32 – Fig. 33 . If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, unbolt oil cooler pipe (line) CAUTION: Wear eye protection NOTE: Obtain radio code before disconnecting battery. For help in identifying components and component locations, refer to illustrations Fig. 108 -Fig. 109 . NOTE: If engine is out of car, ensure oil pan is aligned with cylinder block on flywheel side. 2000 Audi A6 1998-02 ENGINES’ ’2.8L V6 30-Valve 2000 Audi A6 1998-02 ENGINES’ ’2.8L V6 30-Valve bracket from right side oil pan. 5. Position Engine Support (10-222A) with (10-222A/3) engine support adapter, or equivalent, on bolted flanges of fenders. Connect support bracket to front and rear engine lifting eyes. Lift up engine as far as possible. DO NOT use excessive force to raise engine. 6. Cut tie wraps and open bracket supporting starter wiring. See Fig. 97 . Disconnect electrical connection at starter.

ADJUSTMENTS WINDOWS Remove door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Loosen bolts holding window to regulator. Raise window fully, seating window in frame. Tighten bolts. Install door trim panel. TROUBLE SHOOTING POWER WINDOWS On Dakota, inspect circuit breaker No. 20 (20-amp) in junction block. On Durango inspect circuit breaker No. 21 (25-amp) in junction block. On all models, junction block is located on left end of instrument panel. Inspect fuse No. 9 (40-amp on Dakota, 50-amp on Durango) in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in left front corner of engine compartment. Inspect power window system ground circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . SYSTEM TESTS ALL WINDOWS INOPERATIVE Dakota 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver’s front power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 3 (Black wire) at driver power window switch wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between driver power window 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango switch connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . 3. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Tan wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, check driver power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire between driver power window switch connector and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Durango 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. 1. Verify that the power steering pump reservoir is full. 2. Verify that the accessory drive belt is in good condition and that the pulleys are not bent or damaged. 3. Verify proper belt tension and operation of the belt tensioner. 4. Check for power steering hose ground out conditions. 5. Check for good engine idle and correct engine RPM. 6. Check to see that the rear transaxle mount does not have a plastic assembly aid installed which is used Subject: Steering Vibration/Shudder/Moan During Parking Maneuvers on Dry Pavement (Install Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and/or Return (Outlet) Hose Assembly) Models: 1995-99 Buick Riviera 1997-2001 Buick Park Avenue, Ultra 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville • 1995-98 Buick Riviera • 1997-98 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 1999 Buick Riviera • 1999-2001 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre • 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville • If fluid level is low, fill and check for leaks. • If power steering system has air in the system, perform the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure as described in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual. Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the LH front wheel/tire assembly. 4. Remove the LH lower splash shield. 5. Remove the lower radiator air deflector (engine splash shield, if installed.

The fuel gauge does not change indication unless there has been at least 3 gallons of fuel added or deleted between ignition switch cycle. Use recorded REM and instrument cluster DTCs from the Continuous and On- Demand self-test. ? Are any DTCs recorded? Yes If REM DTC B1201 or IC DTC U1131 is retrieved, GO to D6 . No GO to D2. D2 CARRY OUT THE ICM FUEL GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND IC Active Command Select the IC FUEL GAUGE CONTROL active command. Trigger FUELLEVEL active command. Toggle and monitor the fuel gauge while adjusting the FUELLEVEL active command to read 50% and 100% Did the fuel gauge needle start at empty (E), move to half at 50%, and full (F) at 100%? Yes GO to D3. No INSTALL a new instrument cluster; REFER to Instrument Cluster. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test. D3 CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE READING Fuel Pump Module C412 Connect one lead of Instrument Gauge System Tester to fuel pump module C412 Pin 5, Circuit 1357 (LB/YE), harness side. Connect the other lead to fuel pump module C412 Pin 8, Circuit 1356 (LG/VT), harness side. Set the power switch on Instrument Gauge System Tester to the ON position Set Instrument Gauge System Tester to 15 ohms. Wait one minute. Set Instrument Gauge System Tester to 160 ohms. Wait one minute. Read the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read full or above. Set Instrument Gauge System Tester to 15 ohms. Wait one minute. Read the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge should read empty or below Does the fuel gauge operate correctly? Yes GO to D4. No GO to D6. D4 INSPECT THE FUEL TANK Visually inspect the fuel tank for any damage or deformation. ? Is the fuel tank OK? Yes GO to D5. No INSTALL a new fuel tank. REFER to Section 310-01. TEST the system for normal operation. D5 INSPECT THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR AND PUMP ASSEMBLY Visually inspect the fuel pump assembly for damaged wiring or connectors. Visually inspect the float and float rod for damage or obstruction

Removal All vehicles 1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to DRAINING . 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 3. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 4. Remove the 4 transaxle roll restrictor cross brace bolts 5. Remove the bolt and the transaxle roll restrictor cross brace. 6. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve tube from the upper intake manifold and detach the retainer. 7. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV), brake booster and vacuum harness tubes from the upper intake manifold. 8. Detach the fuel tube retainer from the upper intake manifold. 9. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module electrical connector and vacuum tube. 10. Detach the vacuum tube from the upper intake manifold vacuum tube retainer. 11. Disconnect the EGR system module tube from the EGR system module. Early build 12. Disconnect and plug the throttle body and PCV coolant hoses. Late build 13. Disconnect and plug the 2 PCV coolant hoses. All vehicles 14. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector. 15. If equipped, remove and discard the 4 upper-to-lower intake manifold screws. 16. Remove the 8 bolts and the upper intake manifold. * Remove and discard the gaskets. Installation All vehicles Fig. 4: Identifying Tightening Sequence Of Bolts Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO. NOTE: Clean and inspect all sealing surfaces. Install new gaskets 1. Position the upper intake manifold and install the 8 bolts. * Tighten in the sequence shown to 10 N.m (89 lb-in). 2. Connect the throttle body electrical connector. Late build 3. Connect the 2 PCV coolant hoses. Early build 4. Connect the throttle body and PCV coolant hoses. All vehicle 5. Connect the EGR system module tube to the EGR system module. * Tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft). 6. Attach the vacuum tube to the upper intake manifold vacuum tube retainer. 7. Connect the EGR system module electrical connector and vacuum tube. 8. Attach the fuel tube retainer to the upper intake manifold. 9. Connect the PCV, brake booster and vacuum harness tubes to the upper intake manifold. 10. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve tube to the upper intake manifold and attach the retainer. 11. Clean the 4 transaxle roll restrictor cross brace bolts using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads. 12. Position the transaxle roll restrictor cross brace and install the 4 new bolts. * Tighten to 55 N.m (41 lb-ft). 13. Clean the transaxle roll restrictor cross brace-to-roll restrictor bolt using a wire brush and apply new threadlock to the threads. 14. Install a new transaxle roll restrictor cross brace-to-roll restrictor bolt. * Tighten to 48 N.m (35 lb-ft). 15. Install the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 16. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . 17. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
