TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove resonator from throttle body. Remove air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle. 4. Support engine assembly from above with Support Fixture (J-28467-B). See Fig. 1 . Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 2 . 5. Remove power steering hose clamp bolt, and position hose away from timing belt cover. Remove front timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 4 . Align camshaft sprocket timing marks with notches on valve cover. See Fig. 5 . 7. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. Use an Allen wrench to rotate tensioner and relieve tension on timing belt. See Fig. 6 . Install the timing belt. See Fig. 7 . Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise to tension the timing belt. Turn tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch on the rear timing belt cover. Tighten automatic tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Ensure timing belt tensioner pointer is still aligned with notch. 3. If timing belt tensioner is correctly aligned, install timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Install the engine mount bracket on the timing belt end of engine. Position power steering hose in place, and install clamp bolt. Install crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine accessory drive belt. 4. Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. Install air filter housing and resonator.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: For 2004, manufacturer does not provide a timing belt replacement interval. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Engine code AEG is stamped into machined pad on front of cylinder block above crankcase breather, near cylinder head mating surface. See Fig. 1 . For all other 2.0L engines, engine code is stamped on transmission mating flange at the rear of the engine. See Fig. 2 . For all engines, code can also be found on the vehicle data plate and on a sticker on the timing belt cover. Remove right hand insulation tray from engine compartment. Remove engine cover. Rotate serpentine belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension. Remove serpentine belt. See Fig. 3 . Turn crankshaft to TDC position. See Fig. 5 . Align TDC marks visible in bellhousing access hole. See Fig. 6 . Remove upper timing belt cover. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with mark on rear cover. See Fig. 5 . 3. Support engine from above or below with floor jack to take engine weight off of mounts. Remove coolant reservoir and set aside. On Golf and Jetta, remove power steering reservoir (hoses attached), and set aside. On New Beetle, pull off EVAP hoses at EVAP canister and throttle valve housing. 4. On all models, remove engine mount from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 7 . Remove crankshaft pulley from crankshaft sprocket. It is NOT necessary to remove center bolt (center bolt is torque-to-yield type that must be replaced if removed). 5. Remove timing belt covers. Remove engine support from front of engine. See Fig. 4

Lower vehicle. 4. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig. 2 . Remove power steering pump mount bolts (if equipped). Set power steering pump aside with hoses attached. 5. Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Ensure camshaft sprocket timing marks face each other. See Fig. 4 . 7. Slightly loosen water pump bolts. Using Timing Belt Adjuster (J-42492), rotate water pump counterclockwise to relieve tension on the timing belt. See Fig. 5 . Remove timing belt

Timing belt replacement intervals The information relating to timing belt replacement intervals is additional to the main purpose of this CD, but is included to provide guidance to garages and for customer advice. Where possible the recommended intervals have been compiled from vehicle manufacturers’ information. In a few instances no recommendation has been made by the manufacturer and the decision to replace the belt must be made from the evidence of a thorough examination of the condition of the existing belt. Apart from the visible condition of the belt, which is explained fully later in this section, there are several other factors which must be considered when checking a timing belt: Is the belt an original or a replacement. 1. When was the belt last replaced and was it at the correct mileage. 2. Is the service history of the vehicle known. 3. Has the vehicle been operated under arduous conditions which might warrant a shorter replacement interval. 4. Is the general condition of other components in the camshaft drive, such as the tensioner, pulleys, and other ancillary components driven by the timing belt, typically the water pump, sound enough to ensure that the life of the replacement belt will not be affected. 5. If the condition of the existing belt appears good, can you be satisfied that the belt will not fail before the next check or service is due. 6. If the belt does fail, have you considered the consequences. If the engine is an INTERFERENCE type then considerable expensive damage may well be the result. 7. The cost of replacing a belt as part of a routine service could be as little as 5 to 10% of the repair cost following a belt failure. Make sure your customer is aware of the consequences. 8. If in doubt about the condition of the belt – RENEW it. 9. Removal Removal Remove timing belt cover [1]. 1. Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing marks aligned [2]. 2. Ensure timing marks aligned: 1KZ-T/TE: [3]. 3. 4. Remove: Automatic tensioner unit [6]. Tensioner pulley bolt [7]. Tensioner pulley [8]. Timing belt. 5. Slowly compress pushrod into tensioner body until holes aligned. Use press. 4. Retain pushrod with 1,5 mm Allen key through hole in tensioner body [10]. Fit dust cover. 5. Ensure timing marks aligned [2]. 6. Ensure timing marks aligned: 1KZ-T/TE: [3]. 1HD-FT/1HD-FTE: [4]. 7. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, starting at lower sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. 8. Fit tensioner pulley [8]. Tighten bolt to 34 Nm [7]. 9. Push tensioner pulley against belt. Install automatic tensioner unit [6]. Tighten bolts evenly to 13 Nm [5]. 10. Remove Allen key from tensioner body to release pushrod. 11. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3] or [4]. 12. If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures. 13. Install components in reverse order of removal. 14. Reset timing belt replacement warning lamp as follows: 15. -Runner/Landcruiser: Remove grommet in speedometer housing. Depress switch using a thin screwdriver [11]. 16. Colorado: Remove speedometer housing. Remove screw indicated and insert in alternative location [12]. 17. Amazon: Lamp illuminates at 90,000 miles. Return vehicle to dealer.
