1. Remove the differential case. For additional information, refer to Differential Case in this section. 2. NOTE: The differential bearings need not be removed to overhaul the Ford limited slip differential. If bearing removal is required, for additional information, refer to Differential Case in this section. NOTE: The anti-lock speed sensor ring cannot be reused once removed. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock bolt and remove the differential pinion shaft. ? If required, remove the ring gear and anti-lock speed sensor ring. 3. NOTE: This tool does not have the 1/2-inch drive hole. Install the special tool in a suitable vise. 4. Install the differential case on the special tool 5. Install the special tool in the bottom side gear bore. ? Apply a small amount of grease to the centering hole of the special tool. 6. Install the nut in the upper differential side gear. Hold the nut in position while installing the hex screw. Tighten the hex-head screw until contact is made with the Step Plate 7. Insert a suitable dowel bar in the hole of the nut. Tighten the forcing screw to force the differential side gear away from the differential pinion gears. The dowel bar is used to keep the nut from turning when the forcing screw is tightened. 8. WARNING: Keep fingers/hands away from pinion gears when rotating the differential case with the differential rotating tool. NOTE: Differential pinion thrust washers cannot be removed independently of the differential pinion gears and so must be removed simultaneously with the differential pinion gears. Insert the special tool in the pinion shaft bore and turn the differential case to “walk” the differential pinion gears and differential pinion thrust washers out to the differential case windows. 9. Remove the differential pinion gears and differential pinion thrust washers. 10. Remove the differential side gears and differential clutch packs and tag them RIGHT and LEFT with the shim. CAUTION: When separating the clutch plates and clutch discs, note the sequence in which they are disassembled. They must be reassembled in the same sequence. CAUTION: Do not use acids or solvents when cleaning the differential clutch pack. Wipe components with a clean, lint-free cloth only. Separate the differential clutch discs and clutch plates for cleaning and inspection. Refer to the disassembled view of the limited slip differential case in the Description and Operation portion of this section.

Intake Manifold — Upper Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01. 2. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 3. Remove the engine appearance cover. 4. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 . 5. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor and the idle air control (IAC) solenoid electrical connectors. 6. Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cables. 7. Remove the cable bracket. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the bracket. 8. Disconnect the throttle body hoses. 1. Disconnect the coolant hoses. 2. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose. 3. Disconnect the vapor purge hose. 9. Disconnect the vacuum hose. 10. Disconnect the EGR to exhaust manifold tube nut. 11. Remove the cowl vent screen. For additional information, refer to Section 501-02 . 12. Remove the brace. 13. Remove the vacuum hoses from the mounting bracket. 14. Remove the bracket and position the accelerator and cruise control cables aside. 15. Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR electrical connector. 16. Remove the stud and nut and position the differential pressure feedback EGR transducer aside. 7. Remove the fuel pressure sensor shield. 1. Remove the nut. 2. Remove the bolts. 3. Remove the shield. 18. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the rear of the upper intake manifold. 19. Disconnect the intake manifold tuning valve (IMTV) electrical connector. 20. Disconnect the exhaust vacuum regulator (EVR). 1. Disconnect the electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the vacuum line. 21. Remove the upper intake support bolt. 22. Remove the front intake manifold support bolt.

Removal (Model 194, 8 1/4″ & 1998 Grand Cherokee 216 Axles) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel(s). If equipped with drum brakes, remove brake drum. If equipped with disc brakes, remove brake caliper and rotor. On all models, clean axle housing cover. Loosen cover bolts, and drain oil. Remove cover. 2. Remove differential pinion-shaft lock bolt. Remove pinion shaft from differential. Push in axle. Remove “C” clip from axle at pinion gear. Remove axle from tube. Remove axle shaft seal and bearing from axle tube. Installation 1. Grease bearing, and install into axle tube. Ensure bearing part number is facing outwards. Apply wheel bearing grease to axle shaft seal. Install seal in axle tube. Install axle shaft. 2. Install axle “C” clip. Pull axle out to seat “C” clip. Install pinion shaft. Install lock bolt, and tighten to specification. Apply RTV to axle housing cover. Tighten cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Fill with gear oil. Removal (Model 198, 1999 Grand Cherokee 216 & 226 Axles) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel(s). Remove brake drum. Remove nuts securing axle retainer plate to axle tube, and discard. Using slide hammer and Adapter (6790), remove axle shaft from axle tube. 2. Using a 3/8″ drill bit, drill a shallow hole into bearing retaining ring on axle. DO NOT drill into axle. Using a cold chisel, cut bearing retaining ring across drilled hole, and remove from axle shaft. Using a press and Bearing Remover (1130), remove bearing from axle shaft. Remove seal and retainer plate from axle shaft. Installation 1. Ensure axle shaft retaining plate is flat and not warped. Install retaining plate on axle shaft. Apply wheel bearing grease to axle shaft seal. Install seal on axle shaft. Grease bearing, and install on axle shaft with outer surface groove facing seal. 2. Using press and Bearing Installer (7913), press bearing onto axle shaft. Press NEW bearing retainer ring onto axle shaft. Install axle shaft in axle tube. 1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), under lower left side of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and Controller Antilock Brake (CAB) module. If scan tool is able to identify or communicate with ACM and CAB, go to next step. If scan tool is not able to identify or communicate with ACM and/or CAB, perform appropriate DTC or symptom test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION and SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION tables under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. 2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Gray 26-pin Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. CTM is located behind left side kick panel. Ensure interior lights are off. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminals No. 1 and 16 (Black/Light Green wires) and No. 2 (Black wire). See Fig. 5 . If resistance is 10 ohms or less on each ground circuit, go to next step. If resistance is more than 10 ohms on any ground circuit, check for an open between appropriate CTM connector terminal and ground. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. 3. Disconnect Gray 12-pin CTM connector C3. Using test light connected to ground, probe Gray 12-pin CTM connector C3 terminals No. 1 (Red/Tan wire) and No. 6 (Red/Light Green wire). See Fig. 8 . If test light illuminates on both circuits, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate on both circuits, check for open in appropriate circuit between power distribution center and CTM. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Repair as necessary. 4. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, ensure there is PCI BUS communication with other modules (besides the ACM and CAB). If scan tool is able to identify or communicate with all modules, go to next step. If scan tool is not able to identify or communicate with all modules, refer to appropriate communications symptom for diagnosis. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. 5. Connect Scope Input Cable (CH7058) to channel one connector on scan tool. Connect Cable-To-Probe Adapter (CH7062) and Black and Red test probes to scope input cable. Connect Black test probe to ground. Connect Red test probe to PCI BUS circuit at Gray 26-pin CTM connector C1 terminal No. 10 (Violet/Yellow wire). 6. Using scan tool, select PEP MODULE TOOLS, LAB SCOPE, LIVE DATA. Select 12 VOLT SQUARE WAVE. Press F2 for SCOPE. Press F2 and use DOWN arrow to set voltage scale to 20 volts. Press F2 again when complete. Turn ignition on. If reading on lab scope toggles between zero and 7.5 volts, go to next step. If reading on lab scope does not toggle between zero and 7.5 volts, repair open in PCI BUS circuit (Violet/Yellow wire). 7. Replace CTM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
