ADJUSTMENTS WINDOWS Remove door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Loosen bolts holding window to regulator. Raise window fully, seating window in frame. Tighten bolts. Install door trim panel. TROUBLE SHOOTING POWER WINDOWS On Dakota, inspect circuit breaker No. 20 (20-amp) in junction block. On Durango inspect circuit breaker No. 21 (25-amp) in junction block. On all models, junction block is located on left end of instrument panel. Inspect fuse No. 9 (40-amp on Dakota, 50-amp on Durango) in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in left front corner of engine compartment. Inspect power window system ground circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . SYSTEM TESTS ALL WINDOWS INOPERATIVE Dakota 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove driver’s front power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for continuity between ground and terminal No. 3 (Black wire) at driver power window switch wiring harness connector. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between driver power window 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango 2000 Dodge Durango 2000 ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT’ ‘Power Windows – Dakota & Durango switch connector and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . 3. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Tan wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, check driver power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire between driver power window switch connector and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Durango 1. Check circuit breaker for power window system. See TROUBLE SHOOTING . Replace circuit breaker as necessary. If circuit breaker is okay, go to next step. 2. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Tan wire) at driver’s power window switch wiring harness connector. If battery voltage is present, check driver’s power window switch. See POWER WINDOW SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Tan wire between driver power window switch connector and ignition switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Draining and Filling Cooling System Notes Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining Procedure Important: Do NOT add any engine coolant supplement sealant pellets to the cooling system. Drain and refill the engine cooling system every 5 years or 240 000 km, (150,000 ml) , whichever occurs first. 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. 2. Remove and clean the coolant recovery reservoir. Caution: To avoid being burned, do not remove the radiator cap or surge tank cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system will release scalding fluid and steam under pressure if radiator cap or surge tank cap its removed while the engine and radiator are still hot. 3.1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detention tab. Do not press down while rotating pressure cap. 3.2. Wait until any residual pressure, indicated by a hissing sound, is relieved. 3.3. After all hissing stops, press down on the radiator cap and rotate the cap counterclockwise in order to remove the cap. Important: Recover and store used coolant in a used coolant holding tank and submit the used coolant for recycling on a regular basis. Do NOT pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is very toxic. Disposing of ethylene glycol into the sewer system or ground water is both illegal and ecologically unsound. 4. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock in order to collect all of the used coolant. 5. Open the radiator drain cock. If only partial cooling system draining is required, drain enough coolant to perform the procedure 6. Open the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing 2 full turns. 7. Open the air bleed valve above coolant pump 2 full turns. 8. Place a drain pan under the engine block drains in order to collect the used coolant. Important: Allow the coolant to drain completely

Installation 1. Secure the Relay to the wire loom next to the Battery with wire ties. Secure top and bottom with wire ties (see Picture 1). Note: It is suggested to loosen the battery from the base and move it to allow extra working room. Picture 1 2. Attach the ring terminal with 2 black wires to the 10mm ground bolt next to the battery (see picture 2) Run the fog light wire harness on the driver side of the car. Use wire ties as needed Vehicle Disassembly 5. Remove the screws on the lower part of the instrument panel (picture 6) Picture 6 6. Remove lower instrument panel sub assy (picture 6) 7. Mount switch into switch knockout on left side of dash (see picture 9) Picture 9 8. From inside the cabin, locate the wires that were pushed through in step 4. It will be the grommet above the gas pedal (see picture 10) Picture 10 9. Install switch harness (see picture 11) Picture 11 10. Locate the junction box behind the lower instrument panel (picture 12) Picture 12 11. T-tap green/black wire from fog light harness to connector DB pin 16, red wire (bottom pin on right). Connector DB is in the driver’s side junction box, located on the left side of the steering column (pic. 13 & 14) 12. T-Tap orange/black wire from fog light harness to connector DB pin 18, blue wire (right side third pin up from bottom). Grounding the Automobile A perfectly and beautifully wired automobile will nevertheless have bugs and problems if everything is not properly grounded. Do not go to the careful effort of installing a quality wire harness only to neglect proper grounding. Note: The Painless Wire Harness Kit includes no ground wire except the black wire from the two headlamp connectors. You must supply ground wire (14-16 gauge) for all circuits. 6.3.1 Connect a Ground Strap or Cable (2-gauge minimum) from the Negative Battery terminal to the automobile chassis (frame). 6.3.2 Connect a Ground Strap from the Engine to the chassis (even a 10-gauge wire is too small) . DO NOT RELY UPON THE MOTOR MOUNTS TO MAKE THIS CONNECTION . 6.3.3 Connect a Ground Strap from the Engine to the Body. 6.3.4 If you have a fiberglass body you should install a terminal block to ground all your Gauges and Accessories. Ground the Terminal Block with at least a 12-gauge wire to the chassis. 6.4 Terminal Installation and Making Connections Note: In the following steps you will be making the circuit connections. Before you start, you should carefully read Sections 7.0 through 10.0 , as appropriate, and continually refer to Section 10.0 , DOUBLE- CHECKING your routing and length calculations before cutting any wires and making connections. Give special attention to Turn Signal and Ignition Switch connections. These can be somewhat confusing. 6.4.1 Have all needed tools and connectors handy. 6.4.2 Select the correct size terminal for the wire and stud application. 6.4.3 Determine the correct wire length and cut the wire. Remember to allow enough slack in the harness and wires at places where movement could possibly occur, such as automobile body to frame, frame to engine, etc. Double-check your calculations. 6.4.4 Strip insulation away from wire. Strip only enough necessary for the type of terminal lug you are using. Note: In the following step, make sure that the terminal is crimped with the proper die in the crimping tool. An improper crimp will NOT make a good connection. 6.4.5 Crimp the terminal onto the wire. CAUTION: DO NOT OVER-CRIMP! 6.4.6 Connecting the harness throughout the groups is a redundant process. Make sure that each wire is FIRST properly routed and THEN attach. DO NOT ATTACH FIRST THEN ROUTE AFTERWARD. 6.4.7 When all wires are attached, tighten the mounts and ties to secure harness permanently. 6.5 Testing The System 6.5.1 Use a small (10 amp or less) battery charger to power up the vehicle for circuit testing. If there is a problem anywhere, the battery charger’s low amperage and internal circuit breaker will provide circuit protection. CAUTION: IF YOU HAVE NOT YET DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY FROM THE AUTOMOBILE, DO SO NOW! DO NOT CONNECT THE BATTERY CHARGER WITH THE BATTERY CONNECTED. Connect the battery charger’s NEGATIVE output to the automobile chassis or engine block and its POSITIVE output to the automobile’s positive battery terminal. 6.5.2 INDIVIDUALLY turn on each light, ignition, wiper circuit, etc. and check for proper operation. Note: The turn signals will not flash properly if you do not have both the front and rear bulbs installed and connected. 6.5.3 When all circuits check out THEN attach the battery cable to the battery for vehicle operation

Fuel pump relay is located in the front of the trunk. Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to FUEL PUMP RESISTOR (3.5RL) . 2. Turn engine off and ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 12-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green wire). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 4). 3. Start engine and run at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral, until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle for at least one minute. Turn engine off. Disconnect vacuum hose No. 21 from vacuum manifold. Apply 8-12 in. Hg (27-40 kPa) vacuum to Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Start engine and run at 6500 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 12-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green wire). If less than one volt is present, fuel pump relay circuit is okay. If one volt or more is present, substitute a known good PCM, then recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM. 4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 26-pin and 12-pin connectors. Disconnect fuel pump relay 4-pin connector. Using a fused jumper wire, connect fuel pump relay connector terminals No. 2 (Red/White wire) and No. 4 (Green wire). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and PCM 12-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, replace fuel pump relay. 5. Remove jumper wire. Measure voltage between ground and fuel pump relay 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Red/White wire). If battery voltage is present, repair open or short in Green wire between PCM and fuel pump relay. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Red/White wire between fuel pump relay and FUEL PUMP fuse No. 22 (20-amp), located in underdash fuse/relay box. FUEL PUMP RESISTOR (3.5RL) 1. Fuel pump resistor is located in the left corner of the trunk. Disconnect fuel pump resistor 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on and measure voltage between ground and fuel pump resistor connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow wire) within 2 seconds. If battery voltage is present for 2 seconds after ignition is turned on, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present as specified, check PGM-FI relay. See PGM- FI MAIN RELAY . 2. Turn ignition off. Using a jumper wire, connect fuel pump resistor connector terminals No. 1 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 2 (Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If engine does not start, go to next step. If engine starts, replace fuel pump resistor. 3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel unit sub-harness Gray, 10-pin connector located in front of trunk, above fuel pump access panel, next to Gray, 20-pin connector. Turn ignition on and measure voltage between ground and sub-harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black/Yellow wire) within 2 seconds. If battery voltage is present for 2 seconds after ignition is turned on, check fuel pump. If battery voltage is present as specified, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between fuel pump resistor and fuel pump

The PCV system is designed to prevent blow-by gas from escaping to the atmosphere by drawing it directly into the intake manifold. The PCV valve contains a spring-loaded plunger which is lifted in proportion to intake manifold vacuum. Under high vacuum, blow-by is returned directly to the manifold through the breather chamber and PCV valve with fresh air. When intake manifold vacuum decreases (wide open throttle) and vacuum in the air cleaner increases, the PCV valve closes and the blow-by is returned through the cylinder head cover breather hose and into the air cleaner. The PCV valve also acts as a check valve when the engine backfires to prevent crankcase explosion. Fig. 1: PCV system components-1984-87 1.5L engines Fig. 2: PCV system components-1988-91 1.6L engines Fig. 3: PCV system components-1992-95 engines Fig. 4: PCV system components-1984-87 carbureted engines SERVICE Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve For PCV valve removal, refer to Routine Maintenance of this information. 1. Locate the PCV valve. With the engine running at idle, use pliers to pinch the PCV hose between the valve and the intake manifold. It should be possible to hear the spring loaded valve click shut. 2. If no click is heard, remove the valve from the engine but leave it connected to the intake manifold. A hissing sound should be heard and vacuum should be felt at the valve inlet. 3. If no vacuum is felt, remove the valve from the intake manifold hose. The engine should stall or almost stall. This will indicate a stuck valve or clogged hose. Check the breather hose for clogging or leaks and replace any defective parts. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System FUEL INJECTED ENGINES General Information See Figure 3 The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to control emissions measured at the tailpipe. Components included are the EGR valve and controls. The EGR system uses a poppet type valve to regulate the amount of exhaust gas flowing into the intake manifold. The flow path is cast into the cylinder head and does not use any external tubing. A control solenoid valve regulates the amount of vacuum to the EGR valve. A Constant Volume Control (CVC) valve provides a constant amount of vacuum to the control solenoid valve over a wide range of engine vacuum. When servicing or repairing any part of the emissions system, it is absolutely essential to check for any obvious mechanical faults or failures. Remember, a trouble code only indicates which sensor or circuit is affected by the problem. Simple mechanical faults such as a vacuum leak or poor electrical connection can cause a fault code. The EGR valve is not simply open or closed but is modulated by controlling the amount of engine vacuum to the valve diaphragm, up to a maximum of 8 in. Hg of vacuum. The EGR valve has a sensor in the top of the valve that reports valve lift to the ECU (same as ECM, 1992-95). The ECU modulates the position of the control solenoid valve to control the EGR valve lift according to an internal program. Upstream of the control solenoid valve, the CVC provides a constant supply of vacuum so EGR control is precise under all manifold vacuum conditions

NOTE: Less than 80% of the coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement. 1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half to one turn counterclockwise to the first stop on the filler neck. When the pressure has been released, remove the pressure relief cap. 2. Raise and support the vehicle, For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 3. Remove the lower radiator cover. 4. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Drain the coolant. 5. Close the radiator draincock when finished. Filling and Bleeding with RADKITPLUS 1. Using the special tool, install the RADKITPLUS and follow the RADKITPLUS manufacturer’s instructions to fill and bleed the cooling system. Filling without RADKITPLUS CAUTION: Engine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and clean, drinkable water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system: * Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A. * Do not add Motorcraft Specialty Engine Coolant such as VC-2 or an equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D. Mixing coolants can degrade the coolant’s corrosion protection. * Do not add alcohol, methanol, or brine, or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. * Do not mix with recycled coolants unless they meet the requirements of Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A or WSS-M97B51-A1. Not all coolant recycling processes meet these Ford specifications. Use of such coolants can harm the engine and cooling system components. All engines 1. Install the lower radiator cover.

The PCV system is designed to prevent blow-by gas from escaping to the atmosphere by drawing it directly into the intake manifold. The PCV valve contains a spring-loaded plunger which is lifted in proportion to intake manifold vacuum. Under high vacuum, blow-by is returned directly to the manifold through the breather chamber and PCV valve with fresh air. When intake manifold vacuum decreases (wide open throttle) and vacuum in the air cleaner increases, the PCV valve closes and the blow-by is returned through the cylinder head cover breather hose and into the air cleaner. The PCV valve also acts as a check valve when the engine backfires to prevent crankcase explosion. SERVICE Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve For PCV valve removal, refer to Routine Maintenance of this information. 1. Locate the PCV valve. With the engine running at idle, use pliers to pinch the PCV hose between the valve and the intake manifold. It should be possible to hear the spring loaded valve click shut. 2. If no click is heard, remove the valve from the engine but leave it connected to the intake manifold. A hissing sound should be heard and vacuum should be felt at the valve inlet. 3. If no vacuum is felt, remove the valve from the intake manifold hose. The engine should stall or almost stall. This will indicate a stuck valve or clogged hose. Check the breather hose for clogging or leaks and replace any defective parts. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System FUEL INJECTED ENGINES General Information See Figure 3 The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to control emissions measured at the tailpipe. Components included are the EGR valve and controls. The EGR system uses a poppet type valve to regulate the amount of exhaust gas flowing into the intake manifold. The flow path is cast into the cylinder head and does not use any external tubing. A control solenoid valve regulates the amount of vacuum to the EGR valve. A Constant Volume Control (CVC) valve provides a constant amount of vacuum to the control solenoid valve over a wide range of engine vacuum.
