Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the LH front wheel/tire assembly. 4. Remove the LH lower splash shield. 5. Service Repair No – 12.65.18 Remove 1. Disconnect battery earth lead. 2. Remove ancillary drive belt . 3. Remove RH front road wheel. 4. Remove 3 bolts securing RH splash shield to body and remove shield. 5. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt LH rear cover and remove cover. 6. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction and align the engine “SAFE” position, notch on crankshaft pulley aligned to the “ARROW” on front mounting plate and the timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears as illustrated 7. Remove bolt securing PAS pipe to engine front mounting plate. 8. Remove 3 Torx screws securing PAS pump pulley and remove pulley. Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print 9. Remove 3 bolts securing PAS pump to front mounting plate and tie pump aside. 10. Release alternator battery lead terminal cover, loosen terminal nut and disconnect lead from terminal. 11. Remove Torx screw securing idler pulley to front mounting plate and remove pulley 15. Loosen bolt securing lower engine steady to front subframe. 16. Remove bolt securing lower engine steady to sump mounting, release lower engine steady from sump mounting. 17. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt RH front cover and remove cover 18. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt LH front cover and remove cover. 19. Assemble LRT-12-161 to LRT-12-199 and secure with clamp bolt. 20. Insert LRT-12-161 with LRT-12-199 into crankshaft pulley, loosen and remove pulley bolt. 21. Remove special tool from crankshaft pulley and remove crankshaft pulley. 22. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt lower cover to cylinder block and remove cover. 23. Remove 2 bolts securing ancillary drive belt tensioner and remove tensioner. 24. Note fitted position of heat shield on A/C compressor and remove 3 bolts securing A/C compressor to front mounting plate and cylinder block. Release A/C compressor and heat shield and position aside. 25. Drain engine oil.

Remove the screws and the glove box housing. 12. Disconnect the glove box housing electrical connectors. 13. Remove the knee bolster. 14. Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. With the key on, the engine off and the coolant level sensor disconnected from the vehicle wiring harness, observe the low coolant light: Subject: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On (Diagnose Low Coolant Level System Operation/Check Sensor for Oil Contamination) Models: 2000-2002 Buick Century, Regal 2000-2001 Chevrolet Lumina 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo 2000-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue • Light is on — Chassis wiring or instrument cluster concern. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

Removal 1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio, then write down the customer’s radio station presets. 2. Set-up & Procedure: 1. Ensure the cooling system is cool and not pressurized. Carefully remove the radiator or coolant bottle pressure cap (Fig. 1). 2. Check to see that the radiator or coolant bottle is filled to the proper level, and check hoses for visual damage or leaks. Fill and repair as necessary prior to testing. 3. Select the correct Cooling System Adapter for the application. 4. Apply water or coolant to the rubber gasket and/or o-ring on the adapter, and install the adapter in place of the pressure cap (Fig. 2). 5. Secure one end of the clear hose to the pressure pump using the compression nut (Fig. 3). 6. Secure the second end of the hose to the cooling system test adapter using the compression nut (Fig. 4). 7. Note the operating pressure of the cooling system indicated on the cap or in the vehicle repair manual. 8. Operate the Pressure Pump until the needle on the pressure gauge moves to the arrowhead at the end of the colored band indicating the appropriate pressure range of the cap (see Chart A). Caution : Do not pressurize the cooling system beyond the appropriate color of arrowhead for the system being tested. 9. Monitor the gauge for at least two minutes. If the pressure reading drops, a leak is present. 10. With the system still pressurized, perform a visual inspection of the entire cooling system. Check hoses and connections for seepage, which would indicate a leak. Return to the gauge and check the reading once more.

The PCV system is designed to prevent blow-by gas from escaping to the atmosphere by drawing it directly into the intake manifold. The PCV valve contains a spring-loaded plunger which is lifted in proportion to intake manifold vacuum. Under high vacuum, blow-by is returned directly to the manifold through the breather chamber and PCV valve with fresh air. When intake manifold vacuum decreases (wide open throttle) and vacuum in the air cleaner increases, the PCV valve closes and the blow-by is returned through the cylinder head cover breather hose and into the air cleaner. The PCV valve also acts as a check valve when the engine backfires to prevent crankcase explosion. Locate the PCV valve. With the engine running at idle, use pliers to pinch the PCV hose between the valve and the intake manifold. It should be possible to hear the spring loaded valve click shut. 2. If no click is heard, remove the valve from the engine but leave it connected to the intake manifold. A hissing sound should be heard and vacuum should be felt at the valve inlet. 3. If no vacuum is felt, remove the valve from the intake manifold hose. The engine should stall or almost stall. This will indicate a stuck valve or clogged hose. Check the breather hose for clogging or leaks and replace any defective parts. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System FUEL INJECTED ENGINES General Information See Figure 3 The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to control emissions measured at the tailpipe. Components included are the EGR valve and controls. The EGR system uses a poppet type valve to regulate the amount of exhaust gas flowing into the intake manifold. The flow path is cast into the cylinder head and does not use any external tubing. A control solenoid valve regulates the amount of vacuum to the EGR valve. A Constant Volume Control (CVC) valve provides a constant amount of vacuum to the control solenoid valve over a wide range of engine vacuum. When servicing or repairing any part of the emissions system, it is absolutely essential to check for any obvious mechanical faults or failures. Remember, a trouble code only indicates which sensor or circuit is affected by the problem. Simple mechanical faults such as a vacuum leak or poor electrical connection can cause a fault code. The EGR valve is not simply open or closed but is modulated by controlling the amount of engine vacuum to the valve diaphragm, up to a maximum of 8 in. Hg of vacuum. The EGR valve has a sensor in the top of the valve that reports valve lift to the ECU (same as ECM, 1992-95). The ECU modulates the position of the control solenoid valve to control the EGR valve lift according to an internal program. Upstream of the control solenoid valve, the CVC provides a constant supply of vacuum so EGR control is precise under all manifold vacuum conditions

SERVICE PROCEDURE You will be performing the following, as required: • Determine the DTC Stored in ECM from the CONSULT-II Self-diagnosis results. • ECM Part Number Check to determine if this bulletin applies. • ECM Reprogramming (required if the ECM P/N in the vehicle matches one of those listed under “Current ECM P/N” in Chart A -page 2). • Replacing the Rear Oxygen Sensor (required if ECM Reprogramming is needed). Non-Enhanced EVAP System Diagnostic Procedure 1. Pinch off or plug the EVAP vapor line to seal the EVAP system. 2. Connect the EEST red battery clip to the positive (+) battery terminal. Connect the black battery clip to chassis ground. 3. Install the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter to the fuel fill pipe. Refer to the Service Information for the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter part number. 4. Connect the EEST’s nitrogen/smoke supply hose and vehicle fuel fill cap to the adapter. 5. Turn the nitrogen/smoke valve on the EEST control panel to SMOKE. 6. Use the remote switch to introduce smoke into the EVAP system for 60 seconds. Important: Additional smoke may need to be introduced at 15-second intervals until the leak source has been located. 7. Inspect the entire EVAP system for exiting smoke using the high intensity white light (J 41413-SPT). Enhanced EVAP System Leak Detection Procedure When diagnosing DTCs P0440, P0442, P0446 and P0455, use the J 41413-200 EEST along with 1. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. 2. Command the EVAP vent valve closed with a scan tool.* *Prizm: In order to seal the EVAP system on the 1998-2002 Prizm, bypass the EVAP canister by connecting the fuel tank vapor hose to the canister purge line. Refer to the Service Information for additional information. 3. Connect the EEST red battery clip to the positive (+) battery terminal. Connect the black battery clip to chassis ground. 4. Install the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter to the fuel fill pipe. Refer to the Service Information for the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter part number. 5. Connect the EEST’s nitrogen/smoke supply hose and vehicle fuel fill cap to the adapter. 6. Turn the nitrogen/smoke valve on the EEST control panel to SMOKE. 7. Use the remote switch to introduce smoke into the EVAP system. 8. Use the J 41413-VLV EVAP Port Vent Fitting tool to open the EVAP service port (if equipped) until smoke is observed. 9. Remove the J 41413-VLV EVAP Port Vent Fitting tool once smoke is observed. Important: Additional smoke may need to be introduced at 15-second intervals until the leak source has been located.

Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair Gearbox – KV6 – NAS Models JATCO Gearbox – KV6 – NAS models Remove 1. Position the vehicle on a twin-post lift. 2. Tie bonnet back in upright position. 3. Disconnect battery earth lead. 4. Remove engine acoustic cover. 5. Release HO2S multiplug from support bracket on LH camshaft cover, disconnect multiplug. 6. Raise vehicle on lift. 7. Remove rear beam. 8. Remove RH catalytic converter 2002 Land Rover Freelander (LN) V6-2.5L Copyright © 2010, ALLDATA 10.20 Page 3 12. Remove bolt securing front pipe to bracket and remove front pipe. Discard gasket. 13. Remove 3 screws securing LH splash shield and remove shield 14. Release HO2S lead from clip on cylinder block. Remove 4 nuts securing exhaust manifold to cylinder head, remove manifold and discard gasket. 15. Drain fluid from IRD. 16. Drain gearbox fluid. 17. FitLRT-54-026 to the RH drive shaft inboard joint. 18. Using a suitable lever, release drive shaft from IRD. 19. With assistance, pull hub outwards and release drive shaft from IRD. CAUTION: Care must be taken not to damage oil seal when removing drive shaft from IRD. CAUTION: To avoid damage to gaiter or joint, do not allow shaft to hang on joint. 20. Remove LRT-54-026 from RH drive shaft inboard joint.
