Removal Procedure 1. Remove the steering linkage shield. Refer to Steering Linkage Shield Replacement in Steering Linkage. Important: Have a drain pan ready for the engine oil to drain into. 2. Remove the bolt attaching the engine oil cooler lines to the remote (frame mounted) oil filter adapter. 3. Remove and discard the seals. 4. Remove the engine oil cooler line retaining rings from the engine oil cooler line quick connectors at the radiator engine oil cooler inlet and outlet. Follow the next two steps for the proper retaining ring removal procedure. 5. Using a bent-tip screwdriver or equivalent, pull on one of the open ends of the retaining ring in order to rotate the retaining ring. 6. Rotate the retaining ring around the quick connector until the retaining ring is out of position and can be completely removed. Discard the retaining rings. 7. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the quick connectors at the radiator engine oil cooler inlet and outlet. Pull the lines straight out from the connectors. 8. Remove the remote engine oil filter lines support clamp bolt. Important: Have a drain pan ready for the engine oil to drain into. 9. Remove the bolt attaching the remote engine oil filter lines to the remote (frame mounted) engine oil filter adapter. 10. Hold the remote engine oil filter lines below the remote engine oil filter lines (engine mounted) adapter to drain the engine oil. 11. Remove and discard the seals. 12. Remove the bolt attaching the remote engine oil filter lines to the remote engine oil filter lines (engine mounted) adapter. 13. Remove and discard the seals. 14. Clean all of the components in a suitable solvent, and dry them with compressed air. 15. Inspect the fittings, the connectors, the cooler lines, the cooler, the filter lines, and the remote filter adapter for damage, distortion, or restriction. Replace parts as necessary. 16. Flush the engine oil cooler, the engine oil cooler lines, the remote engine oil filter adapter, and the remote engine oil filter lines with the same type of engine oil normally circulating through the engine. 1. Check the engine oil level. Is the level OK? YES- Go to step 2 . NO- Adjust the engine oil to the proper level, then go to step 14 . 2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). 3. Clear the DTC with the HDS. 4. Do the VTEC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES- Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) and the ECM/PCM. NO- Go to step 5 . 5. Check the result of step 4 . * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) Failure * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) Open * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) SIG Line Open * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) GND Line Open Is the test result any of the above? YES- Go to step 6 . NO- Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch). Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Drain and refill the rear differential with Dual Pump Fluid. 2. Check the tires for proper inflation (recommended cold inflation front and rear is 26 psi) and any variation in tire size or type. 3. Test-drive the vehicle in a parking lot. Make tight, low-speed turns. If the noise is eliminated, return the vehicle to the customer. If the noise is still present, go to step 4. 4. Remove the rear differential assembly (see page 15-16 of the 1997-01 CR-V Service Manual). 5. Remove the torque control differential case, then remove and discard the 30 mm shim and the clutch assembly (see steps 1 thru 10 on pages 15-20 thru 15-22 of the service manual). 6. Remove the thrust needle bearing, the oil pump driveshaft, and the oil pump body assembly (see steps 11 and 12 on page 15-22 of the service manual). 7. Install the new flow collar over the drive pinion shaft. Make sure the tabs of the flow collar align with the oil pump pin. 8. For 1997 models: Assemble the new oil pump (spring, O-rings, piston, and pump body assembly). 9. Align the rear oil pump grooves with the oil pump pin and the flow collar tabs, then install the oil pump body assembly on the differential carrier. 10. Tighten the oil pump body assembly bolts to 12 N·m (8.7 lb-ft). 11. Align the oil pump driveshaft tabs with the grooves of the front oil pump in the oil pump body assembly, then install the oil pump driveshaft. 12. Install the thrust needle bearing with the outer race facing up.

ACTION To diagnose and correct the concern, refer to the following Service Procedure. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE DO NOT START ENGINE Evaluation, Inspections, And Checks 1. Retrieve KOEO diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). 2. Check oil level. Remove and clean dipstick. Reinsert into dipstick tube only until dipstick handle reaches top of dipstick tube (Figure 1). OIL PAN(A4 & A6) Removal (Lower Pan- A4 & A6) 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. 2. Remove engine noise insulator (undercover). See Fig. 12 . Drain engine oil. 3. Unbolt left and right swaybar stabilizer bracket bolts (4) from mounting bracket. See Fig. 98 . Lower swaybar stabilizer not more than 10cm (3.94 INCHES) and secure with heavy wire. 4. If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, unbolt oil cooler pipe (line) bracket from right side oil pan. 5. Remove lower oil pan. To install oil pan (lower), see INSTALLATION (LOWER OIL PAN- A4 & A6) . Installation (Lower Oil Pan- A4 & A6) 1. Ensure oil pan surfaces are clean and dry. Remove residual sealant from oil pan, if necessary, with hand drill and plastic brush instead of a flat scrapper. See Fig. 99 . Install gasket. 2. Install 2 bolts diagonal to each other (to hold up pan). Install the rest of the bolts and hand tighten. 3. Starting at center and moving outward, tighten lower oil pan to upper oil pan bolts to 10 N.m (89 INCH lbs.). Tighten oil pan drain plug 30 N.m (22 ft. lbs.). Wait 30 minutes before filling with engine oil. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING . Removal (Upper Oil Pan- A4 & A6) 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove oil dipstick. Unbolt oil dipstick tube at front of cylinder head. Remove oil dipstick tube. 2. Remove engine noise insulator (undercover). See Fig. 12 . Drain engine oil. 3. Move lock carrier into service position. See LOCK CARRIER . This will allow servicing of front engine components and facilitate removal of oil pan. 4. Open coolant expansion tank cap, drain cooling system at radiator. Open the coolant pump bearing housing drain plug. Located at bottom of block near transmission bell housing, drivers side of vehicle. See Fig. 32 – Fig. 33 . If vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, unbolt oil cooler pipe (line) CAUTION: Wear eye protection NOTE: Obtain radio code before disconnecting battery. For help in identifying components and component locations, refer to illustrations Fig. 108 -Fig. 109 . NOTE: If engine is out of car, ensure oil pan is aligned with cylinder block on flywheel side. 2000 Audi A6 1998-02 ENGINES’ ’2.8L V6 30-Valve 2000 Audi A6 1998-02 ENGINES’ ’2.8L V6 30-Valve bracket from right side oil pan. 5. Position Engine Support (10-222A) with (10-222A/3) engine support adapter, or equivalent, on bolted flanges of fenders. Connect support bracket to front and rear engine lifting eyes. Lift up engine as far as possible. DO NOT use excessive force to raise engine. 6. Cut tie wraps and open bracket supporting starter wiring. See Fig. 97 . Disconnect electrical connection at starter.

Removal 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove battery, battery tray, air cleaner assembly and air cleaner case. Disconnect throttle valve cable from throttle body. Remove cruise control actuator with mounting bracket from body. 2) Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors and ground cables for transaxle removal. Disconnect shift cable and oil cooler lines at transaxle. Remove shift cable clamp bracket from transaxle. 3) Remove front (radiator side) engine mount shock absorber- to-lower frame assembly bolts. Remove front (radiator side) engine mount-to-lower frame assembly bolts/nuts. Remove starter. 4) Remove front (radiator side) exhaust manifold brace from rear of exhaust manifolds. Brace fits between rear of exhaust manifold and front of transaxle. 5) Remove 4 upper transaxle-to-cylinder block bolts. Support engine with hoist. Steering gear assembly must be supported in place during transaxle removal. Secure steering gear assembly to engine hoist using an attaching strap placed at each end of steering gear assembly. 6) Remove front wheels. Remove front exhaust pipe located between exhaust manifolds and rear exhaust pipe. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove axle shafts from transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in AXLE SHAFTS & TRANSFER CASES section. 7) Disconnect shift control cable from mounting bracket. Remove rear (firewall side) engine mount-to-lower frame assembly bolts/nuts. Remove transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts at driver’s side end of transaxle. 8) Remove stabilizer bar mount bracket-to-lower frame assembly bolts. Remove steering gear assembly-to-lower frame assembly bolts/nuts. Support lower frame assembly with floor jack. Lower frame assembly is located below engine and transaxle. 9) Disconnect power steering reservoir pipe mounting brackets from lower frame assembly. Remove bolts for each fender liner from lower frame assembly. Remove lower frame assembly mounting brackets. Lower frame assembly mounting brackets are located on front and rear of lower frame assembly and attach lower frame assembly to body. Remove lower frame assembly. 10) Support transaxle with transmission jack. Remove torque converter cover from front of transaxle. Remove torque converter bolts. Remove remaining exhaust manifold support brace. Remove remaining transaxle-to-cylinder block bolts. Lower transaxle from vehicle.

Remove the oil pan prior to installing the oil pan adapter. Refer to a factory service manual for your vehicle for reference. 2. The Oil Drain Adapter requires the oil pan to be drilled. The hole should be located above the oil level in the pan in an area that does not interfere with any other parts and that will allow oil to flow freely from the drain hose. Mark the area to be drilled. We find that typically, locating the center drain hole 1.5″from the Oil Pan Rail, provides clearance between the adapter fitting and the pan rail, and also keeps the drain hole above the oil level in the pan (See Fig. 1) . Using a scratch awl, mark the center of each bolt hole 9/16″away from the center of the center drain hole so the distance from center to center is 1.125″ (See Fig. 1) . 3. Using a center punch, indent each drilling location to prevent the drill bit from walking. Pre-drill each hole with a 1/8″bit. Secure the oil pan on a work bench or on a drill press, and drill the outer bolt holes to ¼”. Drill the center drain hole to ½”. Deburr the holes and thoroughly clean the oil pan to remove any metal shavings. 4. Install the Oil Drain Adapter onto the oil pan using the two of the ¼-20 bolts, ( Note: Select the appropriate length bolt for your application. If you have a cast aluminum oil pan, you will typically use the 5/8″long bolts; if you have a stamped steel oil pan, you will typically use the 1/2″long bolts. We recommend using blue Loctite on the threads.) and the two ¼” Stato-Seal washers on the inside of the oil pan, using the gasket on the outside of the pan (See Fig. 2a & 2b). Torque the bolts to 6-8 ft/lbs. 5. Re-install the oil pan. Refer to a factory service manual for your vehicle for reference.
