Steering, Brake And Suspension Specialists Proportioning Valve Diagram

This diagram is the most common way to plumb a proportioning valve. In some cases, the right front line will be plugged off at the proportioning valve and the left front line will go to a “T” fitting. From the “T” fitting, the front lines then split off and go to the left and right wheels. Our proportioning valve has a warning light switch built in (this is not a stop light switch.) The warning light will detect any loss of pressure, for example, a leaky wheel cylinder. We recommend you wire this light into your system. Any two wire light socket will work. One wire goes to the accessory power and the other goes to the warning light. Our proportioning valves provide four functions: 1. Proportion pressure front and rear 2. 10 psi. residual check valve 3. Metering valve to apply pressure to the rear brakes before the front brakes 4. A brake warning light to detect a loss in pressure Proportioning Valve Plumbing Diagram: There are two proportioning valve lines that connect to the master cylinder provided in our kits. The first is a 90 degree bend with one leg longer than the other. This line must be oriented with the long leg connected into the front top hole of the proportioning valve and the short end in the front hole on the master cylinder. The second line has two 90 degree bends and has color coded fittings. The larger blue fitting goes into the back hole on the master cylinder and the smaller gold fitting goes into the back top hole on the proportion valve as shown in the diagram

Removal WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer’s specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury. WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake fluid to come in contact with the adhesive backing on the brake pads. If brake fluid is spilled onto the brake pads, new pads must be installed. CAUTION: Use only specified brake parts cleaner. Use of other cleaners may leave a residue on the brake caliper preventing the brake pads adhesive surface from bonding with the brake caliper. 1. Remove the wheel and tire. 2. Check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. * If required, remove fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full. 3. Remove the brake caliper bolts. 4. CAUTION: Do not use the brake caliper sight hole to retract the pistons as this may damage the pistons and boots. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose may occur. CAUTION: Care must be taken when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever. Carefully position the caliper aside using a suitable support or damage to the parking brake cable end fittings may occur. Using hand force and a rocking motion, separate the brake caliper from the anchor plate. Position the brake caliper aside. * Support the caliper with mechanic’s wire. 5. CAUTION: When the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper , new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise. The brake pads are one-time use only. Remove and discard the brake pads and spring clips from the brake caliper anchor plate. 6. NOTE: Do not remove the anchor plate guide pins. The guide pins are press fit to the brake caliper anchor plate. If the guide pins are damaged a new anchor plate must be installed. Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate assembly. * Check the guide pins and boots for binding or damage. * Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if it is worn or damaged. Installation 1. NOTE: To move the piston back into the caliper, the LH piston is turned clockwise and the RH piston is turned counterclockwise. NOTE: A moderate to heavy force toward the caliper piston must be applied. If sufficient force is not applied, the internal park brake mechanism clutch cone will not engage and the piston will not compress. Using the special tool (or equivalent such as OTC tool 7317A), compress the brake caliper piston into its cylinder. 2. Clean the residual adhesive from the brake caliper fingers and pistons using the specified brake parts cleaner. 3. CAUTION: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pad or caliper mating surface or damage to components may occur. Do not install contaminated pads. NOTE: Install all the new hardware supplied with brake pad kit. Install the new spring clips and brake pads. 4. Position the brake caliper and install the 2 bolts. * Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft). 5. If necessary, fill the brake fluid reservoir with clean, specified brake fluid. 6. With the vehicle engine running, apply 89-133 N (20-30 lb) of pressure on the brakes for approximately one minute, to make sure the brake pads adhere to the caliper before any contamination can be introduced. 7. Test the brakes for normal operation.

Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

Electric Trailer Brake Controller Installation Manual

In connection with the installation of such devices, please note the following. 1. Check the installed rear SAM. If a rear SAM with part number A164 540 78 45 or A164 540 88 45 is currently installed, a new rear SAM must be installed and version coded. The current part number is listed in the parts information section below. The cost of this update is not covered by warranty. Note: Some vehicles without a factory trailer hitch are equipped with a rear SAM that requires replacement with a different rear SAM if trailer brakes are to be retrofitted. 2. Locate plug X58/28. This contains the four wires needed for the electric trailer brake controller Refer to the below for wire description. a. Up to December 2006 production, X58/28 (Figure 1, green plug) near the rear fuse box F4 (Figure 1). Plug may be tie wrapped to harness below Rear SAM. b. As of December 2006 production, X58/28 (Figure 2, green plug) near the diagnostic connector X11/4 (Figure 2). Plug may be tie wrapped to harness above connector X11/4. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Verify the condition by road testing the vehicle with the customer. 2. Determine the specific brake issue based on the description in the Service Information above. 3.
