POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) Removal & Installation 1. The PCM is located between driver’s side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. See Fig. 1 . Disconnect negative battery cable and then positive battery cable from battery. 2. Remove bolts on side of power distribution center that secure power distribution center to mounting bracket. Remove heat shield from outside of battery. Remove battery. 3. Rotate power distribution center toward the engine to disengage power distribution center from rear mounting bracket. Pull power distribution center toward rear of vehicle to disengage power distribution center from front mounting bracket. 4. Allow power distribution center to lay aside for access to PCM. Remove electrical connectors from PCM. Electrical connectors may be removed by squeezing tabs on electrical connector together and pulling electrical connector from PCM. Remove bolts and PCM. To install, reverse removal procedure. Vehicles equipped with engine or transmission computers may require a relearn procedure after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost. Default data is used until new data from each key start is stored. As the computer restores its memory from each new key start, driveability is restored. Driveability problems may occur during the relearn stage. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped, the following driveability problems may exist: z Rough or unstable idle. z Hesitation or stumble. z Rich or lean running. z Poor fuel mileage. z Harsh or poor transmission shift quality. To accelerate relearn process after battery removal and installation, vehicle should be road tested in the following manner: z Vehicle at normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles). z Accelerate at normal throttle position (20-50%). z Cruise at light to medium throttle. z Decelerate to a stop, downshifting and using brakes normally. Manufacturers identify specific relearn procedures. See RELEARN PROCEDURES. Always complete the procedure before returning the vehicle to the owner. RELEARN PROCEDURES Theft Alarm Relearn Procedure 1. Theft alarm relearn is necessary whenever battery is disconnected or dead battery is boosted. If battery is connected or boosted without conducting relearn procedure, alarm system will enter power-up mode and vehicle will not start. 2. Correction Replace the ignition coil/module assembly and add ground strap following the procedure below. 1. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the left side spark plug wires from the ignition coil. 3. Disconnect the right side spark plug wires from the ignition coil. 4. Remove the four bolts attaching the ignition coil to its mounting bracket and remove the ignition coil. 5. Remove the ignition coil from the mounting bracket. 6. Loosen the two lower ignition coil mounting bracket nuts. 7. Remove the two upper ignition coil mounting bracket bolts and discard. Subject: Loss of Power Steering Assist, Power Steering Warning Message Displayed in DIC, IPC/Radio Displays Erratic, DTC C0900, B1325 Set (Replace Ignition Coil/Module Assembly and Add Ground Strap) Models: 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx with 3.5L Engine (VINs 8, N — RPOs LX9, LZ4) 8. Install the ground strap (1), P/N 12581176, to the upper left side of the bracket as shown between the coil bracket and intake. Install the new bracket bolt, P/N 11570082, (do not tighten at this time). Prior to installing the ground strap, remove the captured nut and washers. They are not needed (simply pound them out with a hammer on a vise). 9. Install the washer (2), P/N 02436162, to the upper right side of the bracket between the coil bracket and intake. Install the new bracket bolt, P/N 11570082, (do not tighten at this time). Tighten Tighten all the ignition coil bracket bolts and nuts to 25 N·m (15 lb ft). 10. Install the new ignition coil to the mounting bracket. 11. Install the other end of the ground strap to the coil as shown and secure using a new bolt, P/N 11588715. 12. Install the other three ignition coil bolts. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in). 13. Connect the right side spark plug wires to the ignition coil. 14. Connect the left side spark plug wires to the ignition coil. 15. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector

Before you update an ECM/PCM, make sure the battery in the vehicle is fully charged. •To prevent ECM/PCM damage, do not operate anything electrical (audio system, brakes, A/C, power windows, moonroof, etc.) during the update. 1. If not already done, load the May 2004 or later i N CD onto the i N master terminal. Loading instructions are included with the CD. 2. Update the ECM/PCM software with the HIM. For updating instructions, refer to Programming the HIM and Updating an ECM/PCM With a Programmed HIM in Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules . 3. Warm up the engine to operating temperature, then shut if off. 4. Do the ECM/PCM RESET and the CKP PATTERN CLEAR with the HDS. Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure: •Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio, rear window defogger, lights, etc.) are off. •Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position for 30 seconds. •Start the engine, and let it idle (throttle closed and all electrical items off) for 10 minutes. 6. Do the low-rpm CKP pattern learn: •Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: With the A/T in second gear, or the M/T in second or third gear, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from 2,500 rpm down to 1,000 rpm . •Stop the vehicle, and put the transmission into Park or Neutral. Set the parking brake. Do not turn off the ignition switch. 7. Connect the HDS to the DLC, and check the status of PULSER F/B LEARN: •On the Selection Menu , select PGM-FI . •On the Mode Menu , select Data List . •Check the value of PULSER F/B LEARN . •If the value is Completed , go to step 7. •If the value is Not Completed , be sure the engine is at normal operating temperature (the ECT SENSOR (1) value is 176 or higher), and return to step 5. 8. Do the high-rpm CKP pattern learn: NOTE: The low-rpm CKP pattern learn must be completed before you do the high-rpm CKP pattern learn. •Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: With the A/T in first gear, or the M/T in first gear, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from 5,000 rpm down to 3,000 rpm . •Stop the vehicle, and put the transmission into Park or Neutral. Set the parking brake. Do not turn off the ignition switch. 9. Connect the HDS to the DLC (if not already connected), and do this: •On the Selection Menu , select PGM-FI . •On the Mode Menu , select Data List . 10. Check the value of PULSER F/B LEARN (HIGH RPM) •If the value is Completed , you are finished. Disconnect the HDS. •If the value is Not Completed , be sure the engine is at normal operating temperature (the ECT SENSOR (1) value is 176 or higher), and repeat steps 5 thru 8

The specified procedure will compile all the available information before tests are performed. 6: The listed DTCs are internal module malfunctions and should be corrected before attempting any other diagnostics. 7: The listed DTCs are battery voltage related malfunctions and should be corrected before attempting any other diagnostics. Technicians are to install a capacitor, P/N 25073556, at the blower motor control module connector using the following procedure: 1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Refer to the Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect procedure in the Engine Electrical section of SI. 2. Remove the right closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement-Right procedure in the Instrument Panel, Gages and Console section of SI 3. Disconnect the wire harness connector to the blower motor control module. 4. Install a capacitor, P/N 25073556, into the blower motor control module connector using the following steps. Refer to the illustration above to locate the positive and negative leads of the capacitor. Refer to the Splicing Copper Wire Using Splice Clips procedure in the Wiring Systems section of SI (Document ID #303646) for more information on using splice clips. 5. If the customer concern was of a blower motor that continues to run after key off, then replace the blower motor control module and install the capacitor . Refer to the blower motor control module Replacement procedure in the HVAC section of SI. This condition is the only time you need to replace the blower motor control module. 6. Reconnect the blower motor control module connector. 7. Install the right closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement- Right procedure in the Instrument Panel, Gages and Console section of SI. 8. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery. Refer to the Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect procedure in the Engine Electrical section of SI. 9. Verify proper operation of the blower motor.
