Transmission Repair 1. Remove the transmission. Refer to the appropriate SI procedure. 2. Disassemble and inspect the transmission. Refer to Unit Repair Automatic Transmission – 4L60-E/4L65-E. Important: Subject: 4L60-E Automatic Transmission/Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder, Water in Transmission (Repair Transmission and Replace Transmission Filler Tube, Level Indicator and Seal) Models: 2004-2005 Buick Rainier 2003-2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Models 2003-2005 GMC Envoy Models 2003-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada 2005 Saab 9-7X with 4.2L In-Line 6 Cylinder Engine (VIN S — RPO LL8) • Visible rust on the transmission fluid level indicator. • Visible water in the oil pan. • A milky white substance inside the pan area. • Spacer plate gaskets that appear to be glued to the spacer plate, valve body or case. • Rust on internal transmission iron/steel components. • Remove the surge tank cap and examine the coolant for signs of contamination with transmission fluid (the coolant will have a milky, not clear appearance). • If the coolant has a normal, clear appearance, the radiator should not be replaced. • The cooler can also be tested by following the Coolant System Leak Test procedure (SI Document ID# 877442). Do NOT replace a radiator without verifying that the transmission oil cooler is leaking. If water or coolant is found in the transmission, the following components MUST be replaced. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator WITH the transmission REMOVED from vehicle. 1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube from the transmission. 2. Replace the transmission fill tube seal, P/N 1259475. 3. Replace the transmission fill tube, P/N 15000220, following the appropriate SI Document for Transmission Installation. 4. Replace the transmission fluid level indicator, P/N 15069769 when appropriate during the transmission installation. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator with the transmission in the vehicle. 1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement (SI Document ID# 1364496). 2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the filler tube. 3. Remove the filler tube nut (2) located on the right side of the engine. 4. Remove the filler tube from the vehicle. Tip It is necessary to remove the two A/C line (suction line / low side of muffler hose) retainers and reposition • Replace all of the rubber type seals. • Replace all of the composition-faced clutch plate assemblies including the band. • Replace all of the nylon parts (Thrust Washers). • Replace the torque converter. • Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter. • Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J 45096. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-07-30- 052C or newer – Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flush and Flow Test Essential Tool J 45096 TransFlow .
the A/C line to allow proper clearance for installation of the new transmission fluid fill tube. 5. Remove the A/C line at the oil level indicator tube bracket nut. 6. Remove the A/C bracket bolt from the engine lift hook. 7. Reposition the A/C line upward. 8. Install the new transmission filler tube, P/N 15000220, into position but NOT into the transmission at this time. 9. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI Document ID# 744862). 10. Remove the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 11. Remove the transmission heat shield from the transmission. 12. Remove the old filler tube seal from the transmission case. 13. Install a new seal, P/N 1259475 into the transmission case. 14. Position the new transmission filler tube into the transmission seal. 15. Install the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 16. Install the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft). 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Install the nut securing the filler tube to the stud. Tighten Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in). 19. Reposition the A/C line into place. 20. Install the A/C line bracket to the oil level indicator tube stud and secure the bracket with the nut. 21. Install the A/C line bracket to the engine lift bracket and secure the A/C bracket with the bolt

Removal Procedure 1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting. 2. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement- Front. 3. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Rear. 4. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case. 5. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connectors. 6. Remove the electrical connectors from the transfer case motor/encoder. 9. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt securing the left side support brace to the transmission. 10. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt and stud securing the left side support brace to the transfer case 11. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the two bolts securing the right side support brace to the transmission and transfer case. 12. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission 13. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 14. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. 15. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 16. Remove and discard the gasket. Installation Procedure 1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Use sealer GM P/N 12346004 in order to hold the gasket in place. 2. Raise and position the transfer case to the vehicle Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft) . 4. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft)

INTERNAL TCM Circuit Description The TCM is reporting internal errors. Diagnostic Procedure 1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove transmission control relay. Measure resistance between ground and relay ground circuit (Black/Yellow wire) in relay connector. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. If resistance s not greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. 2. The TCM has an internal problem and must be replaced. P0715: INPUT SPEED SENSOR ERROR Circuit Description DTC P0715 will set if an excessive change in input RPM has been detected in any gear. Possible Causes * Intermittent wiring and connector problems. * Faulty input speed sensor. * Input speed sensor circuits shorted to ground, shorted to voltage, or open. * Faulty TCM. Diagnostic Procedure 1. Place gear selector in “P” position and start engine. Using scan tool, monitor input speed sensor value. If value is less than 400 RPM, go to next step. If value is not less than 400 RPM, go to step 9. 2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Install Transmission Simulator (8333). Turn ignition on. Using transmission simulator, turn rotary knob to middle (1000/3000) position. Turn INPUT/OUTPUT switch on. Using scan tool, monitor input and output speed sensor values. If input speed sensor value is 2950- 3050 RPM and output speed sensor value is 950-1050 RPM, replace input speed sensor. If speed sensor values are not as specified, go to next step. 3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Remove transmission control relay. Using fused jumper wire, jumper fused B+ circuit (Red/White wire) and transmission relay output circuit (Red wire) together at relay connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and input speed sensor signal circuit (Red/Black wire) at TCM harness connector. If voltage is greater than 3 volts, repair circuit for short to voltage. If voltage is not greater than 3 volts, remove jumper wire, install relay and go to next step. 4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect input speed sensor harness connector. Measure resistance of input speed sensor signal circuit (Red/Black wire) between TCM and input speed sensor. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. If resistance is not greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. 5. Measure resistance of input speed sensor ground circuit (Dark Blue/Black wire) between TCM and input

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF TRANSMISSION Removal of Transmission REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE CAUTION: Work must be started after approx. 20 se- conds or longer from the “LOCK” position and the nega- tive (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery. REMOVE CENTER CLUSTER FINISH PANEL REMOVE SHIFT LEVER FROM INSIDE OF VEHICLE RAISE VEHICLE AND DRAIN TRANSMISSION OIL NOTICE: Be sure the vehicle is securely supported. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT Remove the propeller shaft and insert SST into the extension housing. SST 09325-2001 0 (for W58 M/T) 09325-4001 0 (for R 1 54 MIT) DISCONNECT EXHAUST FRONT PlPE FROM TAIL PlPE (a) Remove the rubber hanger. (b) Disconnect the pipe at the front side of the converter. (R154 M/T) REMOVE EXHAUST FRONT PlPE (a) Disconnect the exhaust pipe bracket from the clutch housing. (b) Remove the nuts and exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. (b) Pull out the release fork through the left clutch housing hole. (c) Place the matchmarks on the clutch cover and flywheel. (d) Remove the clutch cover set bolts while turning the crankshaft pulley. HINT: Loosen each set bolt one turn at a time until spring tension is released. (e) Remove the clutch cover and disc from the flywheel, and fully move them toward the transmission. (f) Pull out the transmission with the clutch cover and disc.

1. To confirm the client’s complaint, test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably with a slight incline. Set the cruise control between 35 and 40 mph, and monitor the engine rpm using the vehicle’s tachometer, or use the HDS to take a snapshot of the engine rpm. 2. If the engine speed fluctuates several hundred rpm while maintaining a constant vehicle speed, disconnect the EGR valve and retest the vehicle. •If the fluctuation is gone, refer to the EGR troubleshooting in the service manual. •If the engine rpm still fluctuates, and the transmission does not have any other symptoms (shifting problems, slipping, transmission DTCs) go to step 3. 3. Drain the transmission fluid, then strain it through a paint strainer. •If you find little or no contamination in the strainer, the ATF is OK, even if it smells burnt, is discolored, and/or the magnetic drain plug has small chips, flakes, or metal fuzz on it. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A . •If you find large amounts of contamination (pieces of metal or friction material) in the strainer, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B . REPAIR PROCEDURE A 1. Remove the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Install the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 3. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 4. Do the idle learn procedure: •Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off. •Start the engine, and let it run until it reaches its normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles twice). •Let the engine idle with the throttle fully closed for 10 minutes. REPAIR PROCEDURE B Follow the IN-WARRANTY EXCHANGE steps in service bulletin 90-009, Automatic Transmission In- Warranty Exchange Program , to order a remanufactured A/T, replace the failed A/T, and return the failed A/T core. 1. Remove the transmission: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Clean the transmission cooler. Refer to service bulletin 89-015, ATF Cooler Cleaner . 3. Install a remanufactured transmission: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 4. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 5. Was a condition found and corrected? — Go to Step 21 Go to Step 10 10 Inspect engine harness circuit 1222 for a short to power. Refer to General Electrical Diagnosis Procedures . Operate the vehicle under the following conditions: { The engine speed is more than 500 RPM. { The vehicle is not in fuel shut off. { System voltage is 10-16 volts. { Drive the vehicle through the 1-2 shift. { When the 1-2 SS Valve Assembly is commanded ON, the voltage decreases to zero. { When the 1-2 SS Valve Assembly is commanded OFF, the voltage increases to B+. { All conditions are met for 5 seconds.

1. Before starting work, familiarize yourself with the installation procedure by reading all of the instructions. 2. The exploded view (Figure 2) provides only general guidance. Refer to each step and section diagram in this manual for proper instruction. 3. Throughout this manual, the left side of the vehicle refers to the driver’s side, and the right side to the passenger’s side. 4. Disconnect the negative (ground) cable from the battery (or batteries, if there are two) before beginning work. 5. Route and tie wires and hoses a minimum of 6″ away from exhaust heat, moving parts and sharp edges. clearance of 8″ or more is recommended where possible. 6. When raising the vehicle, support it on properly weight-rated safety stands, ramps or a commercial hoist. Follow the manufacturer’s safety precautions. Take care to balance the vehicle to prevent it from slipping or falling. When using ramps, be sure the front wheels are centered squarely on the topsides; put the transmission in park; set the hand brake; and place blocks behind the rear wheels. Caution! Do not use floor jacks to support the vehicle while working under it. Do not raise the vehicle onto concrete blocks, masonry or any other item not intended specifically for this use. 7. During installation, keep the work area clean. Do not allow anything to be dropped into intake, exhaust, or lubrication system components while performing the installation, as foreign objects will cause immediate engine damage upon start-up. Tools Required: • 1? 2 ” and 3? 8 ” drive ratchets with standard and metric sockets and 1 ? 2 ” and 3? 8 ” drive extension • Standard and metric combination or open-end wrenches • Standard screwdriver • Clean shop towels or rags • Pry-bar Highly recommended tools and supplies: • Foot-pound torque wrench • Penetrating oil or light lubricant spray General Installation Practices 97083 v.2.0 3 Monster Exhaust SySTEM INSTallaTIoN 1. Disconnect the negative (ground) cable from the battery (if there is more than one battery, disconnect both negative cables). Secure the cable so it cannot accidentally come in contact with the post. 2. Raise the vehicle and support it securely with properly weight-rated safety stands, ramps or a commercial hoist. Take care to balance the vehicle to prevent it from slipping or falling. When using ramps, be sure the wheels are centered squarely on the topsides. Place the transmission in park (automatic), set the parking brake and securely block the wheels that are on the ground. CaUTIoN: Do NoT WoRK UNDER aNy VEHIClE SUPPoRTED oNly By a JaCK. SEVERE INJURy May RESUlT. 3. From under the vehicle remove the factory exhaust starting at the 2-bolt flange in front of the muffler. Remove the two (2) bolts, two (2) washers, and two (2) springs from the flange and retain for re-use. NOTE: Remove the factory gasket from the 2-bolt flange. The exhaust system will be hanging by the exhaust hanger pins. 4. Liberally apply an aerosol lubricant on all the hanger pins. Remove the exhaust system from the vehicle by removing each hanger pin from the rubber grommet. NOTE: Remove hanger pins from the front of the vehicle to the rear. 5. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Installation of this body lift kit without proper knowledge of the factory recommended procedures might affect the performance of these components and the safety of your vehicle. It is strongly recommended that a certified mechanic who is familiar with the installation of similar components install this body lift kit. 2. Park the vehicle on a clean, dry, flat, level surface. Block the tires so the vehicle cannot roll in either direction. 3. Disconnect both battery cables. Be sure to disconnect the negative cable first, then the positive cable. 4. Before you begin lifting the vehicle, you need to measure and record the bumper to vehicle gaps and also the distance between the cab and the bed. These dimensions will allow you to retain the factory spacing at these locations. WARNING This body lift kit should only be installed on vehicles that are in good working condition. Before the installation begins, the vehicle should be thoroughly inspected for evidence of corrosion or deformation of the sheet metal around the factory body mounts. This body lift kit should not be installed on any vehicle that is suspected to have been in a collision, or misused. Off road use of your vehicle with this body lift installed may increase the stress applied to the factory body mounts. It is not recommended that any vehicle, with a body lift installed, be involved in any extreme off road maneuvers. Failure to follow this warning may result in serious personal injury and/or serious damage to your vehicle. 5. Remove the center shifter console, shift boot, and plate. Remove the doorsill plates and the kick panels. Carefully lift the carpet to expose the cab-mounting bolts. Loosen but do not remove all cab mounting bolts. 6. Carefully mark the splines on the steering shaft in the engine compartment at the steering box and steering column so that the shaft can be reinstalled in the original orientation. Remove the shaft from the vehicle. 7. Release the parking-brake- cable clip from the firewall. 8. Remove the parking brake cable from the frame clip 1 next to the battery. 9. Release the clutch line from the clip on the lower portion of the firewall. Loosen the clutch line from the clip on the firewall located behind the carburetor. Reroute the clutch line underneath the heater hose closest to the passenger side of the vehicle. 10. If the vehicle is equipped with power steering, loosen the clamp just behind the grill that holds the serpentine cooling line and push the line toward the firewall. Loosen both brackets that hold the cooler. Adjust the hoses that are attached to get more hose clearance. 11. Relocate the engine ground strap from the firewall to the lower throttle cable bolt on the firewall. 12. Automatic transmission only. Remove the transmission linkage between the steering column and the transmission. Disconnect the transfer case shifter from the “C” shaped linkage. 13. Remove the oxygen sensor wire from the clip underneath the cab and make sure there is enough slack to allow for the lift 14. Remove the front bumper and lower valance. 15. Remove the two bolts that mount the fan shroud to the radiator. Pull the fan shroud up out of the clips on the bottom of the radiator. Lay the fan shroud over the fan away from the radiator. WARNING Use extreme caution when working with the engine cooling system. Never remove the radiator cap from a hot radiator. Wait until the engine and radiator has cooled and the pressure in the system has dissipated. Use care not to spill any antifreeze/coolant while draining system. Immediately clean up any spilled fluids. Antifreeze can be harmful to the environment. Take care to store the drained antifreeze/coolant in a place away from children and animals. Antifreeze/coolant can be fatal if swallowed.

Figure 1-1 Spicer axles are identified with a manufacturing date and complete part numbers stamped on the right- hand tube. The part number may also appear on a metal tag attached to the cover plate by the cover screws, depending upon the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer. The part number, consisting of six digits reading from left to right, is the basic number for identifying the particular axle assembly. The seventh digit following the dash will identify ratio, differential, and end yoke options used in the assembly. The next group of numbers is the manufacturing date of the axle and is interpreted as follows. The first number is the month, the second number is the day of the month, the third number is the year, the fourth is the line that built the axle, and the letter is the shift. NOTE It is recommended that when referring to the axle, the complete part number and build date be obtained. To do this, it may be necessary to wipe or scrape off dirt, etc., from the axle housing. If the axle is unique on design such that the unit cannot be identified in the standard manner as described above, refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s service and/or parts manual for proper identification. SERVICING COMPONENTS NOT COVERED IN THIS MANUAL Service procedures for some components may not be covered in this manual because they are unique to the vehicle application. Refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s service manual for servicing those components. (e.g. brakes, hubs, rotors, and wheel end components). VEHICLE STORAGE OR PROLONGED INOPERATION If the vehicle has not been operated on a regular daily basis, it is recommended that the vehicle be operated at least once every two weeks. The vehicle should be moved far enough to cause the drivetrain components to make several complete revolutions. This procedure will help assure that all internal components receive adequate amount of lubrication to help reduce component deterioration caused by an undesirable environment (e.g. high humidity).
