In addition to the content of this service kit, four other gaskets not included in this service kit will also be needed to complete the repair, a Control Valve Body Cover (Side Cover) Gasket (54), a Control Valve Body Cover (Side Cover) Inner Gasket (59), a Case Cover Lower Gasket (429), and a Case Cover Upper Gasket (430). These gaskets can be obtained by ordering service kit P/Ns 24206959 and 24206391. Be sure to use ONLY the Second Clutch Assembly and Second Clutch Housing Fluid Seal Rings provided in this service kit. DISCARD the Second Clutch Assembly and Second Clutch Housing Fluid Seal Rings removed from the transmission being serviced. Disassemble ONLY the Oil Pump Assembly from the Case Cover (Complete). DO NOT disassemble the Control Valve Body from the Case Cover. Remove ONLY the Case Cover-to- Case bolts to remove the Case Cover and Valve Body from Transmission Case AS AN ASSEMBLY . To access all Case Cover-to-Case bolts, it is necessary to remove the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Assembly (322), and 1-2 & 3-4 Shift Solenoid Valve Assemblies (315A, 315B).

Line Pressure Check Procedure Tools Required Important: Before performing a line pressure check, verify that the pressure control (PC) solenoid valve is receiving the correct electrical signal from the PCM. Caution: Keep the brakes applied at all times in order to prevent unexpected vehicle motion. Personal injury may result it the vehicle moves unexpectedly. J 21867Universal Pressure Gauge Set 1. Install a Scan Tool. 2. Start the engine and set the parking brake. 3. Check for a stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). 4. Repair the vehicle, if necessary. 5. Check the fluid level. Refer to the Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure. 6. Check the manual linkage for proper adjustment. 7. Turn the engine OFF. Remove the oil pressure test hole plug and install the J 21867. 8. Put the gear selector in PARK range and set the parking brake. 9. Start the engine and allow the engine to warm up at idle Notice: Total test running time should not be longer than two minutes, or else transmission damage could occur. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices. Parts Information 10. Access the PC solenoid valve control test on the Scan Tool. Zoom Sized for Print 11. Increase the PC solenoid as shown actual current from 0.0 to 1.0 amps in 0.1 amp increments. Allow the pressure to stabilize for five seconds after each pressure change. Read the corresponding line pressure on the J 21867. 12. Refer to the Line Pressure specification table. Compare the data to the table. 13. If pressure readings differ greatly from the table, refer to Incorrect Line Pressure. 14. Remove the J 21867. 15. Apply sealant, P/N 12345382 (in Canada, P/N 10953489), to the oil pressure test hole plug. 16. Install the oil pressure test hole plug. Tighten Tighten the oil pressure test hole plug to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

Special Tool(s) Removal 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. 2. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever. 3. Disconnect the digital transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector. 4. Remove the manual control outer lever nut and manual control outer lever. 2004 Ford Truck Ranger 2WD V6-4.0L VIN E 5. Remove the screws and the digital TR sensor. Installation 1. Install the digital TR sensor and loosely install the screws. 2. CAUTION: Tightening one screw before tightening the other may cause the sensor to bind or become damaged. NOTE: The manual lever must be in the NEUTRAL position. Using the special tool, align the digital TR sensor and tighten screws in an alternating sequence. 3. Before you update an ECM/PCM, make sure the battery in the vehicle is fully charged. •To prevent ECM/PCM damage, do not operate anything electrical (audio system, brakes, A/C, power windows, moonroof, etc.) during the update. 1. If not already done, load the May 2004 or later i N CD onto the i N master terminal. Loading instructions are included with the CD. 2. Update the ECM/PCM software with the HIM. For updating instructions, refer to Programming the HIM and Updating an ECM/PCM With a Programmed HIM in Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules . 3. Warm up the engine to operating temperature, then shut if off. 4. Do the ECM/PCM RESET and the CKP PATTERN CLEAR with the HDS. Set the parking brake. Do not turn off the ignition switch. 7. Connect the HDS to the DLC, and check the status of PULSER F/B LEARN: •On the Selection Menu , select PGM-FI . •On the Mode Menu , select Data List . •Check the value of PULSER F/B LEARN . •If the value is Completed , go to step 7. •If the value is Not Completed , be sure the engine is at normal operating temperature (the ECT SENSOR (1) value is 176 or higher), and return to step 5. 8. Do the high-rpm CKP pattern learn: NOTE: The low-rpm CKP pattern learn must be completed before you do the high-rpm CKP pattern learn. •Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: With the A/T in first gear, or the M/T in first gear, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from 5,000 rpm down to 3,000 rpm . •Stop the vehicle, and put the transmission into Park or Neutral. Set the parking brake. Do not turn off the ignition switch. 9. Connect the HDS to the DLC (if not already connected), and do this: •On the Selection Menu , select PGM-FI . •On the Mode Menu , select Data List . 10. Check the value of PULSER F/B LEARN (HIGH RPM) •If the value is Completed , you are finished. The Clutch and Band Application chart provides a basis for analyzing road test results. Note that the rear clutch is applied in all forward ranges (D, 2, 1). The transmission overrunning clutch is applied in first gear (D, 2 and 1 ranges) only. The rear band is applied in 1 and R range only. Note that the overdrive clutch is applied only in fourth gear and the overdrive direct clutch and overrunning clutch are applied in all ranges except fourth gear. For example: If slippage occurs in first gear in D and 2 range but not in 1 range, the transmission overrunning clutch is faulty. Similarly, if slippage occurs in any two forward gears, the rear clutch is slipping. Applying the same method of analysis, note that the front and rear clutches are applied simultaneously only in D range third and fourth gear . If the transmission slips in third gear, either the front clutch or the rear clutch is slipping. If the transmission slips in fourth gear but not in third gear, the overdrive clutch is slipping. By selecting another gear, which does not use these clutches, the slipping unit can be determined. For example, if the transmission also slips in Reverse, the front clutch is slipping. If the transmission does not slip in Reverse, the rear clutch is slipping. If slippage occurs during the 3-4 shift or only in fourth gear , the overdrive clutch is slipping. Similarly, if the direct clutch were to fail, the transmission would lose both reverse gear and overrun braking in 2 position (manual second gear). If the transmission will not shift to fourth gear , the control switch, overdrive solenoid or related wiring may also be the problem cause. This process of elimination can be used to identify a slipping unit and check operation. Proper use of the Clutch and Band Application Chart is the key. Although road test analysis will help determine the slipping unit, the actual cause of a malfunction usually cannot be determined until hydraulic and air pressure tests are performed. Practically any condition can be caused by leaking hydraulic circuits or sticking valves.Unless a malfunction is obvious, such as no drive in D range first gear , do not disassemble the transmission. Perform the hydraulic and air pressure tests to help determine the probable cause.
