This bulletin is being revised to add model years and provide important repair information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-08-49-015 (Section 08 — Body and Accessories). Condition Some customers may comment on a noise coming from the instrument panel cluster (IPC) while driving or on initial start-up. Removal Note: If a new instrument cluster is being installed connect WDS. Upload the instrument cluster configuration information using the programmable modules installation routine prior to commencing the removal of the instrument cluster. µ 1. Remove the instrument panel lower panel. 1 Remove the retaining screws. 2 Release the retaining clips. µ 2. Detach the audio control switch from the steering column lower shroud (if equipped). z Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the locking tang. µ 3. Remove the audio control switch (if equipped). z Disconnect the electrical connector. µ 4. Detach the steering column upper shroud. 1 Using a thin bladed screw driver, release the two clips (one each side). 2 Detach the shroud. µ 5. Remove the steering column upper shroud. µ 6. Remove the steering column lower shroud. µ 7. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel retaining screws. (Steering wheel shown removed for clarity). µ 8. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel. µ 9. Remove the instrument cluster retaining screws and detach the instrument cluster. µ 10. CAUTION: The instrument cluster must be kept upright to avoid silicone liquid leaking from the gauges. Remove the instrument cluster. 1 Release the locking tang. 2 Disconnect the instrument cluster electrical connector. Installation Note: If a new instrument cluster is being installed connect WDS. Download the instrument cluster configuration information using the programmable modules installation routine after the installation of the instrument cluster. 1. Install the IPC. Ensure everything is connected properly. The replacement IPC requires SPS Programming and IPC Setup procedures to be performed. It does not matter which procedure is performed first. 2. Start the engine and then select IPC Setup. You must have the engine running before performing the IPC Setup. 3. Select IPC Setup. With the engine running, enter the appropriate mileage and engine hours. 4. Select “OK”. Review the pop up asking you to verify the mileage and engine hours. Move the pop up out of the way if necessary to view the verification screen. This may require a click and drag of the dialog box. 5. Verify that the mileage and engine hours are correct and select “OK”. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF until the engine has “run” for approximately seven (7) minutes. Allowing the engine to idle for this period of time allows the IPC to accumulate 1/10th of an hour and write the correct engine hour value to the permanent memory. The engine must be running before set up is performed and run for approximately seven minutes after the user selects “OK” confirming their mileage/engine hour inputs. After approximately seven minutes, shut the engine OFF and complete the event. The seven minute clock starts after you select “OK”, confirming the entries. Note: Based on feedback from technicians, we are currently making changes to the “IPC Setup” application which will include several enhancements to the set up screens. These are scheduled to be released and available in TIS2WEB very soon. Important: Only IPC conditions listed in the Condition section of the bulletin are covered under this special coverage program. In a small number of vehicles, the condition may be intermittent and the gauge sweep test may not always verify the condition. IPC Performance IPC performance may be affected by the following conditions: Customer Comments and Observations Customers who describe gauge performance as jumpy, sticky, slow or erratic. Gauge performance may also be described as being inoperative or inaccurate. For example, for a period of time the speedometer may appear to move normally but be inaccurate and not return to zero (0) after the vehicle comes to a stop. This inaccurate condition may be more or less pronounced during the drive cycle and may, for a time, return to normal operation. A Tech 2 sweep test may not reveal the condition. 1. Perform a gauge sweep test to determine/verify that an IPC gauge is sticking, stuck, or inoperative. Using the Tech 2, navigate to the following screens to perform the gauge sweep test: Body -> Instrument Panel Cluster -> Special Functions -> IPC Gauges -> Display(s) Test. • Cold temperatures • Temperature fluctuations • High humidity • Driving over rough surfaces such as dirt roads or potholes

Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. With the key on, the engine off and the coolant level sensor disconnected from the vehicle wiring harness, observe the low coolant light: Subject: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On (Diagnose Low Coolant Level System Operation/Check Sensor for Oil Contamination) Models: 2000-2002 Buick Century, Regal 2000-2001 Chevrolet Lumina 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo 2000-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue • Light is on — Chassis wiring or instrument cluster concern. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

REMOVAL PROCEDURE 1. On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the shift lever. 2. On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, perform the following steps: CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. 3. Disconnect the battery negative cable. CAUTION: Refer to SIR Handling Caution in Service Precautions. 4. Disable the passenger side SIR system. 5. Remove the left sound insulator. 6. Remove the right instrument panel sound insulator. 7. If the vehicle is equipped with a multiple CD changer located in the center console, remove the center console. 8. Remove the center sound insulator. 9. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 10. Remove and retain the instrument panel storage compartment. 11. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 12. Remove and retain the left and right speakers and the speaker grilles. 13. Use a flat-bladed tool to remove the windshield defroster grille. Retain the windshield defroster grille for use on the replacement IP carrier. 14. If the vehicle is equipped with a sunload sensor, twist the sunload sensor 1/4 turn counterclockwise in order to detach it from the windshield defroster grille. Retain the sunload sensor for use on the replacement IP carrier. IMPORTANT: Always disconnect the brown electrical from the BCM before disconnecting the purple electrical connector from the BCM. 15. Disconnect the brown electrical connector from the Body Control Module ( BCM ) . 16. Disconnect the purple electrical connector from the Body Control Module (BCM) . 17. Remove the knee bolster. 18. Remove and retain the instrument panel cluster. 19. Remove and retain the radio. 20. Remove and retain the HVAC control assembly 21. Remove the left and right instrument panel driver knee bolster brackets. 22. Lower the steering column for clearance. Refer to the appropriate procedure: * Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column – Standard * Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column – Tilt IMPORTANT: Label all of the connections in order to avoid improper installation
