OVERHAUL HINT: Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures with LH side. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 1. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID NOTICE: Wash off the brake fluid immediately if it comes into contact with a painted surface. 2. DISCONNECT FRONT FLEXIBLE HOSE 3. Remove the union bolt and a gasket from the disc brake cylinder, then disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake cylinder. a. REMOVE DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY FR LH 4. Remove the 2 bolts and disc brake cylinder. a. REMOVE DISC BRAKE PAD KIT FRONT (PAD ONLY) 5. Remove the 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shim. a. 6. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of 2 brake pads . a. Using a screwdriver, remove the wear indicator from each of 2 brake pads . b. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PAD SUPPORT PLATE 7. Remove the upper side front disc brake pad support plate. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PAD SUPPORT PLATE 8. Remove the bottom side front disc brake pad support plate. a. 10. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PISTON 14. Place a piece of cloth or similar, between the piston and the disc brake cylinder. a. Use compressed air to remove the piston from the disc brake cylinder. INITIAL VISUAL INSPECTION 1. Place the vehicle on a suitable lift. 2. Visually inspect the parking brake cable installation, parking brake caliper levers and general condition of the brakes. • Ensure the caliper levers are returning fully to their stops. • Confirm the cable routing is correct • Confirm that the cable is securely fixed at all abutment points and is free to move within the C-clip. • Where cable routing goes over the top of the stabilizer bar drop links, confirm that the stabilizer bar rubber deflector blocks are fitted, and that the brake cables have not been getting trapped behind the stabilizer bar drop links (look for tell-tale marks on the links and/or cables). NOTE: Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > Model > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 2: Chassis — Section 206: Brake System NOTE: Refer to the correct section by reference to VIN and based on whether the vehicle is fitted with high performance brakes or not. 3. Rectify any obvious faults. 4. If no obvious faults are found or further guidance is needed to rectify faults, please proceed to the next stage of this bulletin. Refer to GTR Sections 206-05 (parking Brake and Actuation) and GTR Section 206-04 (Rear Disc Brake). 5. If any faults were found and rectified, it will be necessary to re-calibrate the parking brake after rectification. See ‘Parking Brake Calibration’ procedure. PREPARE THE PARKING BRAKE FOR DETAILED INSPECTION CAUTION: Jaguar IDS DVD 111 or later and Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis. 1. Install the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle. 2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle. 3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration. 4. Select ‘YES’ when prompted ‘Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?’. 5. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task. 6. Select ‘Vehicle Configuration’ tab when the ‘Content Model’ is displayed. 7. Select ‘Electronic Parking Brake’. 8. Select ‘Release to Service Position’ (S-TYPE/XJ) or ‘Parking Brake Unjam Procedure’(XK) ‘. CAUTION: When using the special service tool, take care to operate in the ‘release’ direction. Actuator motor damage may result if the tool is operated in the ‘apply’ direction for any length of time). 9. If the parking brake will not release using IDS, use the special service tool to fully release the parking brake. Refer to GTR Section ‘Parking Brake Cable Tension Release’ (in Section 206-05) for details of using the special service tool.

Inspection 1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 2. Remove the rear wheels. 3. Check the thickness (A) of the inner pad (B) and the outer pad (C). Do not include the thickness of the backing plate. 4. If any part of the brake pad thickness is less than the service limit, replace the rear brake pads as a set. 5. Clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels Replacement 1. Remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder. 2. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 3. Remove the rear wheels. 4. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A). 5. Remove the flange bolts (B) while holding respective caliper pin (C) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot, and remove the caliper (D). Check the hose and pin boots for damage and deterioration. NOTE: Do not twist the brake hose and the parking brake cable to prevent damage. 6. Remove the pad shims (A) and the brake pads (B). 7. Remove the pad retainers (A). 8. Clean the caliper bracket (B) thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks. Verify that the caliper pins (C) move in and out smoothly. Clean and lube if needed. 9. Inspect the brake disc for runout, thickness, parallelism and check for damage and cracks. 10. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the retainer mating surface of the caliper bracket (indicated by the arrows). 11. Install the pad retainers. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Keep the assembly paste off the brake disc and brake pads. 12. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the pad side of the shims (A), the back of the brake pads (B), and the other areas indicated by the arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the pad shims and the brake pads friction material. Keep grease and assembly paste off the brake disc and the brake pads. Contaminated brake disc or brake pads reduce stopping ability. 13. Install the brake pads and the pad shims correctly. Install the brake pad with the wear indicator (C) on the bottom inside. If you are reusing the brake pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency

Before you update an ECM/PCM, make sure the battery in the vehicle is fully charged. •To prevent ECM/PCM damage, do not operate anything electrical (audio system, brakes, A/C, power windows, moonroof, etc.) during the update. 1. If not already done, load the May 2004 or later i N CD onto the i N master terminal. Loading instructions are included with the CD. 2. Update the ECM/PCM software with the HIM. For updating instructions, refer to Programming the HIM and Updating an ECM/PCM With a Programmed HIM in Service Bulletin 01-023, Updating Control Units/Modules . 3. Warm up the engine to operating temperature, then shut if off. 4. Do the ECM/PCM RESET and the CKP PATTERN CLEAR with the HDS. Do the low-rpm CKP pattern learn: •Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: With the A/T in second gear, or the M/T in second or third gear, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from 2,500 rpm down to 1,000 rpm . •Stop the vehicle, and put the transmission into Park or Neutral. Set the parking brake. Do not turn off the ignition switch. 7. Connect the HDS to the DLC, and check the status of PULSER F/B LEARN: •On the Selection Menu , select PGM-FI . •On the Mode Menu , select Data List . •Check the value of PULSER F/B LEARN . •If the value is Completed , go to step 7. •If the value is Not Completed , be sure the engine is at normal operating temperature (the ECT SENSOR (1) value is 176 or higher), and return to step 5. 8. Do the high-rpm CKP pattern learn: NOTE: The low-rpm CKP pattern learn must be completed before you do the high-rpm CKP pattern learn. •Test-drive the vehicle on a level road: With the A/T in first gear, or the M/T in first gear, decelerate (with the throttle fully closed) from 5,000 rpm down to 3,000 rpm . •Stop the vehicle, and put the transmission into Park or Neutral. Set the parking brake. Do not turn off the ignition switch. 9. Connect the HDS to the DLC (if not already connected), and do this: •On the Selection Menu , select PGM-FI . •On the Mode Menu , select Data List . 10. Check the value of PULSER F/B LEARN (HIGH RPM) •If the value is Completed , you are finished. Disconnect the HDS. •If the value is Not Completed , be sure the engine is at normal operating temperature (the ECT SENSOR (1) value is 176 or higher), and repeat steps 5 thru 8
