SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Verify the condition by road testing the vehicle with the customer. 2. Determine the specific brake issue based on the description in the Service Information above. 3. Follow the appropriate repair procedure(s), listed on the following pages, for your specific issue BRAKE NOISE • Brakes can make a range of noises when applied or released. Some noises are normal and no repair action should be taken. • Use the following descriptions to identify the specific type of brake noise and the appropriate repair: Squeak noise when the brakes are cold: • Usually occurs during the first few stops in the morning. • This is a normal condition. No service action is necessary Squeak noise with the brakes at normal operating temperatures: • listed under Brake Service on page 5 of this bulletin and the appropriate Service Manual procedures. • Refer to technical bulletins specific to the model of vehicle regarding this issue. 1. To confirm the client’s complaint, test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably with a slight incline. Set the cruise control between 35 and 40 mph, and monitor the engine rpm using the vehicle’s tachometer, or use the HDS to take a snapshot of the engine rpm. 2. If the engine speed fluctuates several hundred rpm while maintaining a constant vehicle speed, disconnect the EGR valve and retest the vehicle. •If the fluctuation is gone, refer to the EGR troubleshooting in the service manual. •If the engine rpm still fluctuates, and the transmission does not have any other symptoms (shifting problems, slipping, transmission DTCs) go to step 3. 3. Drain the transmission fluid, then strain it through a paint strainer. •If you find little or no contamination in the strainer, the ATF is OK, even if it smells burnt, is discolored, and/or the magnetic drain plug has small chips, flakes, or metal fuzz on it. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A . •If you find large amounts of contamination (pieces of metal or friction material) in the strainer, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B . REPAIR PROCEDURE A 1. NOTE: Additional SSTs may be ordered by calling SPX/OTC at 1-800-933-8335. 1. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal of the vehicle battery. NOTE: Any time the negative (-) battery terminal has been disconnected, systems requiring initialization will need to be re-initialized after the negative (-) battery terminal has been reconnected. 2. Open the back door and leave open. 3. Using the plastic pry tool, remove the back door garnish center. 4. Using the plastic pry tool, remove the left and right back door side garnish panels. NOTE: To remove the strap cover, push it toward the back door window as shown in the illustration. 6. Remove the back door trim board. A. Insert the plastic pry tool between the back door trim board to release the clips retaining the back door trim. NOTE: Be careful NOT to damage the back door and back door trim board. B. Release each clip as shown in the illustration. 7. Disconnect both connectors to the back door ECU and both clips holding the wire harness to the large service cover. 8. Remove both of the back door service hole covers. For 2001 – 2004 model year Sequoia vehicles, go to step 11. For 2005 – 2006 model year Sequoia vehicles, continue to step 9. 9. For 2005 – 2006 model year Sequoia vehicles ONLY: Remove the multiplex network door ECU. Using a drill of less than 3.2 mm (0.126 in.), drill out the two (2) rivet heads. HINT: Gently and vertically put the drill to the rivets and cut the rivet flanges. CAUTION: Take care as the cut rivets may be HOT. 10. For 2005 – 2006 model year Sequoia vehicles ONLY: Install the replacement multiplex network door ECU and rivets

REPAIR PROCEDURE: VALVE ROTATION: 1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECTunder: Service Info>14-Fuel System>Fuel Delivery >Standard Procedure>Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure. 2. Remove upper intake manifold. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECTunder: Service Info >9-Engine>Manifolds>Intake Manifold> Removal. 3. Remove cylinder head cover(s). Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECTunder: Service Info >9-Engine>Cylinder Head>Cylinder Head Cover(s) >Removal. 4. Remove rocker arm and shaft assembly. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT under: Service Info >9-Engine>Cylinder Head> Rocker Arm/Adjuster Assembly >Removal). 5. Clean and mark the tip of each exhaust valve stem at the 12 O’clock position witha paint marker. The paint mark will be used later to assist with determining the amount of valve rotation. 6. Remove the sparkplugs. 7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, until the number 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. 8. Install the compression tester sparkplug adapter in cylinder#1 sparkplug hole. With air hose attached to sparkplug adapter, apply 620.5 to 689 kPa (90 to 100 psi) air pressure. This is to hold valves into place while servicing components. 9. Using Tool MD 998772A (1) with adapter 6527 (4) or equivalent, slightly compress the exhaust valve spring to release tension against the valve and valve spring retainer ( Fig. 1 ). 10. Remove the valve spring retainer locks and discard the locks. NOTE: It is important that the valve rotation section of this repair procedure be performed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove the Fuel Pump/Fuel Level Sensor/Fuel Filter assembly from the vehicle. • Refer to section FL in the appropriate Service Manual (ESM) for removal information. • Follow all applicable Service Manual Warnings and Cautions. 2. Place the assembly in a clean working area. CAUTION: Don’t get any dirt or other foreign material in any of the assembly parts. Disassemble 3. Disconnect the wires from the fuel level sensor. 4. Snap the fuel temperature sensor out of its mounting clip. Figure 1 Fuel Level Sensor Fuel Temperature Sensor and Mounting Clip 5. Carefully separate the flange from the chamber. • Release the 2 side “hooks”. • One hook is shown in Figure 1; the other is on the opposite side and is not visible in the picture. Flange Hook Chamber Chamber Hook: Not Visible 6. Remove the chamber from the rest of the assembly. • Set the chamber aside. You’ll be reusing it. 3/10 7. Remove the spring. • Set the spring aside. You’ll be reusing it. Fuel Pump Bracket Suction Filter 9. Certain 2004 – 2006 Model Year Sienna vehicles equipped w/Power Back Door (Rear Liftgate) Q1: What is the condition? A1: Toyota has determined that the gas struts used to help lift and support the Power Rear Liftgate in certain 2004 through 2006 model year Sienna vehicles could be wearing out sooner than expected. As the gas struts deteriorate, the performance of the Power Rear Liftgate will begin to degrade, and the Power Rear Liftgate will operate more slowly than when the gas struts were new. Only Sienna vehicles equipped with the Power Rear Liftgate are involved. Q2: Are there any warnings that this condition exists? A2: Owners may notice that the Power Rear Liftgate will not remain in the open position. If not repaired, the gas struts may not be able to support the weight of the liftgate when it is open, and eventually, the gas struts could deteriorate to the point that the liftgate will fall about ten inches after it reaches the fully open position, at which point the power motor will engage and power the liftgate to the fully closed position. This condition may cause injury to a person who is struck by the liftgate when it falls or when it is closing. Q3: When were these vehicles produced, and how many vehicles are involved? A3: Only certain 2004 through 2006 model year Sienna vehicles equipped with the Power Rear Liftgate, produced between January 2003 and December, 2006 are involved. Approximately 196,000 vehicles are involved nationwide.
