1. Check the engine oil level. Is the level OK? YES- Go to step 2 . NO- Adjust the engine oil to the proper level, then go to step 14 . 2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). 3. Clear the DTC with the HDS. 4. Do the VTEC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Is the result OK? YES- Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) and the ECM/PCM. NO- Go to step 5 . 5. Check the result of step 4 . * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) Failure * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) Open * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) SIG Line Open * Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch (VTEC Oil Pressure Switch) GND Line Open Is the test result any of the above? YES- Go to step 6 . NO- Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch). If it is OK, replace the rocker arm oil control solenoid (VTEC solenoid valve) (see step CMP SENSOR A REPLACEMENT ), then go to 14 . 6. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 7. Disconnect the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) 2P connector. 8. To access all Case Cover-to-Case bolts, it is necessary to remove the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Assembly (322), and 1-2 & 3-4 Shift Solenoid Valve Assemblies (315A, 315B).

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Catera Open the hood. 1. Remove the windshield wiper arm stud cap that conceals the nut. 2. Remove the windshield wiper arm nut. 3. Grasp the windshield wiper arm with both hands. 4. Use a rocking motion to loosen the windshield wiper arm from the pivots. 5. Remove the windshield wiper arm and blade. 6. To install: Installation is the reversal of the removal procedure. 7. Deville and Fleetwood WIPER ARM Raise the hood as needed for access to the wiper arms. 1. Operate the wipers and turn the ignition OFF when the wipers are at the mid-wipe position. 2. Lift the wiper arm from the windshield. 3. On 1990 vehicles, pull the retaining latch and remove the arm from the transmission shaft. 4. On 1991-93 vehicles, disengage the retaining latch using a suitable tool and remove the arm from the transmission shaft. 5. To install: Install the wiper arm onto the transmission shaft. 6. Push the retaining latch in and return the arm assembly to the windshield. 7. Park the wipers. If adjustment is necessary, proceed as follows: Remove the right wiper arm. a. AIRFLOW MODE ACTUATOR INSPECTION Full-auto Air Conditioner 1. Connect battery positive voltage to terminal E or F and ground to terminal F or E of the airflow mode actuator. 2. Verify that the airflow mode actuator operates as shown. * If not as specified, replace the airflow mode actuator 3. Verify that the resistance between the terminals of the airflow mode actuator is as shown in the graph. * If not as specified, replace the airflow mode actuator. Manual Air Conditioner Operating inspection 1. Turn the fan switch to OFF. 2. Turn the mode dial to VENT. 3. Turn the ignition switch to ON position, (engine ON) 4. Turn the fan switch 4th position. 5. Turn the mode dial from VENT to DEFROSTER. 6. Verify that the airflow mode actuator moves smoothly. * If not as specified, inspect the airflow mode main link and sub link for clogging and deformity. * If the actuator cannot move at all, go to voltage inspection. Voltage inspection 1. Disconnect the airflow mode actuator connector. 2. Turn the ignition switch to ON position, (engine OFF) Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print 3. INSTALLATION: Rotate the main trunnion of the rocker arm so that the flat machined surface is facing up, then lower the rocker arm onto the rocker stud so that the roller tip is contacting the valve and the pushrod is seated into the cup. Rotate the engine by hand until cylinder #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke (the rotor on the distributor should be lined up with cylinder #1′s spark tower). If you are using hydraulic lifters, rotate the pushrod between your fingers as you tighten the rocker arm adjustment nut, once you start to feel drag in the pushrod you are at zero lash. Continue tightening the adjustment to set the lifter preload according to your camshaft installation instructions, then use an allen wrench to tighten the posi-lock. If you are using mechanical lifters, use a feeler gauge while tightening the adjustment nut to set your valve lash to the clearance listed in the camshaft installation instructions, then use an allen tool to tighten down the posi-lock. Complete this procedure for both the intake and exhaust rockers, then rotate the crankshaft 90° and repeat this procedure on the next cylinder in the firing order. Continue doing so until all 16 rocker arms have been properly installed and adjusted. Proper operation can be verified by rotating the crank by hand and observing the motion of the pushrod and the position of the roller on the valve tip. The pushrods must never contact the cylinder head walls and the roller tip must maintain at least 50% contact with the valve tip during a full rotation of the camshaft. If the pushrod contacts the cylinder head or the roller fails to maintain sufficient contact with the valve tip you will need to loosen your rocker stud and adjust your pushrod guideplate until proper valvetrain alignment is achieved.

REPAIR PROCEDURE NOTE: ISIS online service manual information is only available for vehicles 1990 and newer. 1. Remove the rear trailing arm: •Refer to the suspension section of the appropriate service manual, or •Online, enter keyword REAR SUSPENSION, then select Suspension Arms Replacement from the list. 2. Mark the trailing arm at the arrow on the bottom of the bushing 3. Place the arm on a hydraulic press, supported by the hub base, with the spindle facing up. 4. With the hub driver, press the old bushing out of the trailing arm. 5. Install the new bushing with the short end toward the outside of the vehicle. Align the arrow with the mark you made on the trailing arm. 6. Press the new bushing into the trailing arm until its edge is 10 to 12 mm above the surface of the arm. 7. Reinstall the trailing arm. 8. If necessary, repeat steps 1 thru 7 to install a new bushing in the other rear trailing arm. 9. Bleed the brake system: •Refer to the brakes section of the appropriate service manual, or •Online, enter keyword BLEED, then select Brake System Bleeding from the list. 10. Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if needed: •Refer to the suspension section of the appropriate service manual, or •Online, enter keyword WHEEL ALIGNMENT, then select Wheel Alignment – Rear Toe Inspection/Adjustment from the list

INSTALLATION 1. Squeeze the ring while you pull down on the shift boot. Remove the shift knob by turning it counterclockwise. 2. Remove the shift knob from the ring by squeezing the retaining tabs and pushing it up with long nose pliers. 3. Transfer the ring to the leather shift knob 4. Install the leather shift knob on the shift lever by turning it in the clockwise direction. 5. Pull the boot upward. USE AND CARE Use a sponge or cloth and a solution of mild liquid dishwashing soap and water to clean the shift knob. Rinse the knob completely with water, then dry it with a shop towel. Never use organic solvents such as benzene, thinner, or gasoline to clean the shift knob.

DRIVER SIDE DISASSEMBLY 1. With weight taken off the rear springs, as noted in pre-installation checklist, remove the front and rear bolts from the leaf spring. 2. Remove existing U-bolts and U-bolt plate that attach the axle to the leaf spring . Remove the leaf spring from the axle. 3. Remove the front spring hanger bracket , rear leaf spring hanger bracket, and any overload spring brackets . See Figure 2-1. These can be removed by grinding, or air chiseling, the heads off the factory-installed rivets, and using a hammer and punch to remove remainder of the rivet. See Figure 2-2. 3. Remove the OEM shock absorbers and retain the lower mounting fastener for later use. 4. Cut the exhaust as it bends downward after the axle, at its most vertical and straight section. See Figures 2-3 & 2-4. Save the cut-off portion for use in Section 9. Remove the rear exhaust hanger from the frame. CAUTION: Be careful that the leaf spring does not spring out of its hanger, or off the frame. FIG. 2-4 FIG. 2-1 FRONT HANGER BRACKET FIG. 2-2 LEAF SPRING REAR HANGER BRACKET FIG. 2-3 CUT HERE FOR EXHAUST MODIFICATION 6 3. DRIVER SIDE ASSEMBLY 1. Review Figure 3-1 & Figure 11-2 to acquaint yourself with the various parts of the UltraRide suspension. 2. Fasten the Front Hanger to the frame using the (4) 7/16 x 1 1/4 UNC FLANGE BOLTS and (4) 7/16 UNC TOP LOCK FLANGE NUTS. (See Table 11-1 for appropriate Torque) . 3. Loosely secure the suspension Arm to the axle using (2) 5/8 UNF, 4.0 X 10.50 U-bolts, (4) 5/8 WASHERS, (4) 5/8 UNF HIGH NUTS, and the Arm Mount Plate. Make sure the locating pin is properly inserted into the mating hole on the axle pad and that the bottom side of the arm rests evenly on the axle pad. Note : Install the axle tube spacer between the U-bolts and Axle when installing on an E350. 4. Insert the Bolt Spacer Tube into the arm bushing and loosely fasten the Arm to the Front Hangar using (1) 3/4 X 7 UNF BOLT, (1) 3/4 UNF NUT, (2) 3/4 WASHERS, and (2) plastic wear washers. 5. Using the enclosed bolt hole template for the Upper Air Spring Mount, align the template to the frame using the appropriate rear spring hanger holes. Mark and drill three (3) new frame holes to 0.47″ on each side of the frame. Bolt the air spring bracket assembly to the frame using (5) 7/16 x 1 1/4 UNC CAPTIVE BOLTS and (5) 7/16 UNC TOP LOCK FLANGE NUTS. (See Table 11-1 for appropriate Torque) . Note : Use the correct holes designated for either the E350 or E450 chassis. See Figure 3-2. 6. Bolt the air spring to the suspension Arm using (1) 1/2 UNC JAM NUT. Make certain the air spring is not twisted or creased after tightening the nut. (See Table 11-1 for appropriate Torque) . Tighten the Arm bushing bolts and the Arm U-bolts AFTER the suspension has been installed and brought to Design Height, in Section 9.5. (See Table 11-1 for appropriate Torque) . 8. Install the new shock absorbers using the same orientation as factory, with factory and enclosed hardware. 9. IMPORTANT: Route the brake cable away from the air spring and any other moving components. It may need to be tied, or slightly repositioned in order to accommodate this. 4. PASSENGER SIDE DISASSEMBLY 1. Repeat Section 2 for the passenger’s side of the truck. 5. PASSENGER SIDE ASSEMBLY 1. Repeat Section 3 for the passenger’s side of the truck. Double-check all fasteners for proper torque. Check all clearance points and all alignments. See Figure 5-1 for details.
