Subject: ATA SOLENOID DIAGNOSTIC CODES P0740, P0741, P0742, P0743, P0746, P0748, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765, P0770 This TSB supersedes TSB # 05-40-006 to include DTC descriptions in Step 10. DESCRIPTION: Incorrect operation of the transaxle solenoids may result in the following three symptoms: REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Check Engine Light illuminated 2. Transaxle held in 3rd gear “Fail-safe” 3. Diagnostic Trouble Codes P0740, P0741, P0742, P0743, P0746, P0748, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765 or P0770 set. NOTE: Do NOT replace the transaxle for solenoid codes listed as open/short. Instead, follow the repair procedure shown below. 1. Using a Hi-Scan Pro, check for DTC in both the “Engine” and “Automatic Transaxle” menus. Record the DTC and description. 2. From the Hi-Scan Pro, select: ^”Hyundai Diagnosis” menu ^”Vehicle ^”Auto Transaxle” menu ^”Actuation Test” ^Press the F1 button (STRI) and test the LR, UD, 2ND, OD, DCC and FSV solenoid (if applicable). Monitor the Hi-Scan and listen for a solenoid sound from the engine compartment. ^If Hi-Scan shows: ^”TEST FAILURE” and no solenoid sound is heard, go to Step 3. ^”COMPLETED” and solenoid sound is heard, the wiring between the PCM/TCM has no open or short circuits. Go to Step 5. 3. Visually check the wiring harness between the TCM and transaxle for a damaged wire or a short circuit to ground. Disconnect the connectors to the solenoids at the transaxle and the PCM/TCM and check for a bent pin or a pin not fully inserted into the connector. If so, repair or replace the ECM control harness, P/N 914XX-XXXXX 4. Check the harness inside the transaxle oil pan for a short circuit to ground. Replace the harness if damage is found or if three or more solenoid DTCs are found in Step 1. (Refer to TSB # 04-40-015 for instructions). Zoom Sized for Print 5. 1. Based upon stored fault codes for secondary air system, there is little or no flow of secondary air into engine. Typical causes for this issue are failed secondary air pumps and/or secondary air check valves. Secondary air pump should operate under normal circumstances when vehicle is first started to perform system test. Pump will normally be heard running when standing in front right corner of vehicle. 2. The secondary air pump is located in the right front of engine compartment. A secondary air pump relay located in the glove box is controlled by the engine control module and sends power to the secondary air pump. 3. Air pump can be disconnected and supplied with power and ground at pump to verify operation is possible. 4. Check valve on front right of cylinder head can be supplied with vacuum and visually checked for opening of valve. 5. Vacuum line from check valve to operating solenoid should also be inspected for cracks or being disconnected. Vacuum line follows right side of cylinder head to back of cylinder head to the secondary air solenoid located under left rear side of intake manifold. 6. The solenoid should allow vacuum flow to the check valve during vacuum pump operation. The solenoid is controlled directly by the engine control module and receives power during key-on-engine-off. 46RE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING – ROAD TESTING Before road testing, be sure the fluid level and control cable adjustments have been checked and adjusted if necessary. Verify that diagnostic trouble codes have been resolved.Observe engine performance during the road test. A poorly tuned engine will not allow accurate analysis of transmission operation. Operate the transmission in all gear ranges. Check for shift variations and engine flare, which indicates slippage. Note if shifts are harsh, spongy, delayed, early, or if part throttle downshifts are sensitive. Slippage indicated by engine flare, usually means clutch , band or overrunning clutch problems. If the condition is advanced, an overhaul will be necessary to restore normal operation. A slipping clutch or band can often be determined by comparing which internal units are applied in the various gear ranges. The Clutch and Band Application chart provides a basis for analyzing road test results. Note that the rear clutch is applied in all forward ranges (D, 2, 1). The transmission overrunning clutch is applied in first gear (D, 2 and 1 ranges) only. The rear band is applied in 1 and R range only. Note that the overdrive clutch is applied only in fourth gear and the overdrive direct clutch and overrunning clutch are applied in all ranges except fourth gear. For example: If slippage occurs in first gear in D and 2 range but not in 1 range, the transmission overrunning clutch is faulty. Similarly, if slippage occurs in any two forward gears, the rear clutch is slipping. Applying the same method of analysis, note that the front and rear clutches are applied simultaneously only in D range third and fourth gear . If the transmission slips in third gear, either the front clutch or the rear clutch is slipping. If the transmission slips in fourth gear but not in third gear, the overdrive clutch is slipping. By selecting another gear, which does not use these clutches, the slipping unit can be determined. For example, if the transmission also slips in Reverse, the front clutch is slipping. If the transmission does not slip in Reverse, the rear clutch is slipping. If slippage occurs during the 3-4 shift or only in fourth gear , the overdrive clutch is slipping. Similarly, if the direct clutch were to fail, the transmission would lose both reverse gear and overrun braking in 2 position (manual second gear). If the transmission will not shift to fourth gear , the control switch, overdrive solenoid or related wiring may also be the problem cause.

DURING PDI (PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION) IF WARNING “CK SUSP” LIGHT IS ON, PRIOR TO SENDING WARNING: BEFORE REPLACING ANY AIR TO SERVICE, VERIFY SWITCH IN UPPER RIGHT SUSPENSION COMPONENTS, HOISTING, KICK PANEL IS ON. INITIAL VISUAL INSPECTION 1. Place the vehicle on a suitable lift. 2. Visually inspect the parking brake cable installation, parking brake caliper levers and general condition of the brakes. • Ensure the caliper levers are returning fully to their stops. • Confirm the cable routing is correct • Confirm that the cable is securely fixed at all abutment points and is free to move within the C-clip. • Where cable routing goes over the top of the stabilizer bar drop links, confirm that the stabilizer bar rubber deflector blocks are fitted, and that the brake cables have not been getting trapped behind the stabilizer bar drop links (look for tell-tale marks on the links and/or cables). NOTE: Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > Model > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 2: Chassis — Section 206: Brake System NOTE: Refer to the correct section by reference to VIN and based on whether the vehicle is fitted with high performance brakes or not. 3. Rectify any obvious faults. 4. If no obvious faults are found or further guidance is needed to rectify faults, please proceed to the next stage of this bulletin. Refer to GTR Sections 206-05 (parking Brake and Actuation) and GTR Section 206-04 (Rear Disc Brake). 5. If any faults were found and rectified, it will be necessary to re-calibrate the parking brake after rectification. See ‘Parking Brake Calibration’ procedure. PREPARE THE PARKING BRAKE FOR DETAILED INSPECTION CAUTION: Jaguar IDS DVD 111 or later and Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis. 1. Install the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle. 2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle. 3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration. 4. Select ‘YES’ when prompted ‘Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?’. 5. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task. 6. Select ‘Vehicle Configuration’ tab when the ‘Content Model’ is displayed. 7. Select ‘Electronic Parking Brake’. 8. Select ‘Release to Service Position’ (S-TYPE/XJ) or ‘Parking Brake Unjam Procedure’(XK) ‘. CAUTION: When using the special service tool, take care to operate in the ‘release’ direction. Actuator motor damage may result if the tool is operated in the ‘apply’ direction for any length of time). 9. If the parking brake will not release using IDS, use the special service tool to fully release the parking brake. Refer to GTR Section ‘Parking Brake Cable Tension Release’ (in Section 206-05) for details of using the special service tool.
