Follow the appropriate repair procedure(s), listed on the following pages, for your specific issue BRAKE NOISE • Brakes can make a range of noises when applied or released. Some noises are normal and no repair action should be taken. • Use the following descriptions to identify the specific type of brake noise and the appropriate repair: Squeak noise when the brakes are cold: • Usually occurs during the first few stops in the morning. • This is a normal condition. No service action is necessary Squeak noise with the brakes at normal operating temperatures: • listed under Brake Service on page 5 of this bulletin and the appropriate Service Manual procedures. • Refer to technical bulletins specific to the model of vehicle regarding this issue. If there are no bulletins for the car you are working on, install OE type pads using the information Notes about brake pads and brake noise: Original Equipment (OE) brake pads are installed on all current Infiniti vehicles at the factory. The OE pads use a Non-asbesto • s Organic (NAO) compound. Single clunk noise from front suspension when applying the brakes: • The noise is a result of the brake pads shifting in the direction of rotor rotation when the brakes are applied. Can be duplicated by lightly touching the brake pedal. • • If the brake pedal is pushed hard, the noise is less likely to occur. Make sure the brake pads and pad hardware (shims, springs, clips, etc) are installed correctly. Refer to ASIST for vehicle specific brake service information. Refer to Brake Service on page 5 for additional detail. OVERHAUL HINT: Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures with LH side. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 1. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID NOTICE: Wash off the brake fluid immediately if it comes into contact with a painted surface. 2. DISCONNECT FRONT FLEXIBLE HOSE 3. Remove the union bolt and a gasket from the disc brake cylinder, then disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake cylinder. a. REMOVE DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY FR LH 4. Remove the 2 bolts and disc brake cylinder. a. REMOVE DISC BRAKE PAD KIT FRONT (PAD ONLY) 5. Remove the 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shim. a. 6. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of 2 brake pads . a. Using a screwdriver, remove the wear indicator from each of 2 brake pads . b. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PAD SUPPORT PLATE 7. Remove the upper side front disc brake pad support plate. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PAD SUPPORT PLATE 8. Remove the bottom side front disc brake pad support plate. a. 10. Remove the cylinder slide bush from the cylinder slide pin. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE BUSH DUST BOOT 11. Remove the 2 bush dust boots from the disc brake cylinder mounting. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER MOUNTING LH 12. Remove the 2 bolts and disc brake cylinder mounting LH. a. 13. Using a screwdriver, remove the set ring and cylinder boot. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PISTON 14. Place a piece of cloth or similar, between the piston and the disc brake cylinder. a. Use compressed air to remove the piston from the disc brake cylinder. APPLIED VEHICLES: All Infiniti SERVICE INFORMATION • This bulletin is to assist you in responding to customer questions about brake operation, and provides diagnostic and repair information for each item listed, if any should occur. • Most brake issues fall into the following categories: a. Brake Noise: A squeak, squeal, clunk, or groan that occurs when the brakes are applied or released. b. Brake Judder: A vibration that can be felt in the vehicle, steering wheel, or brake pedal when the brakes are applied. c. Pedal Feel: The effort needed to operate the brakes is too high or too low. INITIAL VISUAL INSPECTION 1. Place the vehicle on a suitable lift. 2. Visually inspect the parking brake cable installation, parking brake caliper levers and general condition of the brakes. • Ensure the caliper levers are returning fully to their stops. • Confirm the cable routing is correct • Confirm that the cable is securely fixed at all abutment points and is free to move within the C-clip. • Where cable routing goes over the top of the stabilizer bar drop links, confirm that the stabilizer bar rubber deflector blocks are fitted, and that the brake cables have not been getting trapped behind the stabilizer bar drop links (look for tell-tale marks on the links and/or cables). NOTE: Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > Model > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 2: Chassis — Section 206: Brake System NOTE: Refer to the correct section by reference to VIN and based on whether the vehicle is fitted with high performance brakes or not. 3. Rectify any obvious faults. 4. If no obvious faults are found or further guidance is needed to rectify faults, please proceed to the next stage of this bulletin. Refer to GTR Sections 206-05 (parking Brake and Actuation) and GTR Section 206-04 (Rear Disc Brake). 5. If any faults were found and rectified, it will be necessary to re-calibrate the parking brake after rectification. See ‘Parking Brake Calibration’ procedure. PREPARE THE PARKING BRAKE FOR DETAILED INSPECTION CAUTION: Jaguar IDS DVD 111 or later and Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis. 1. Install the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle. 2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle. 3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration. 4. Select ‘YES’ when prompted ‘Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?’. 5. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task. 6. Select ‘Vehicle Configuration’ tab when the ‘Content Model’ is displayed. 7. Select ‘Electronic Parking Brake’. 8. Select ‘Release to Service Position’ (S-TYPE/XJ) or ‘Parking Brake Unjam Procedure’(XK) ‘. CAUTION: When using the special service tool, take care to operate in the ‘release’ direction. Actuator motor damage may result if the tool is operated in the ‘apply’ direction for any length of time). 9. If the parking brake will not release using IDS, use the special service tool to fully release the parking brake. Refer to GTR Section ‘Parking Brake Cable Tension Release’ (in Section 206-05) for details of using the special service tool.

SERVICE PROCEDURE To service, reduce/minimize moisture intrusion into the rear drum brake assemblies by applying Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the brake backing plate . WARNING Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. 1. Place vehicle on hoist and remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the rear brake drums and replace the rear linings. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-02. 3. Inspect the rear brake assemblies for damaged, missing and/or improperly seated adjuster plug or parking brake cable . 4. Inspect and clean the lining contact area of the brake drum ; machine if necessary. 5. Reinstall the rear brake drums and adjust the lining to drum clearance per WSM, Section 206-02. 6. Thoroughly clean the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate to promote proper adhesion of sealant. Zoom Sized for Print 7. Apply Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate at the following inter[ace areas (Figure 1): ^Axle Flange ^ Wheel Cylinder ^ Parking Brake Cable ^Hold Down Pins 8. Reinstall the rear wheels and torque lug nuts per Workshop Manual, Section 204-04.

connected to the vehicle, the TBC module will enter a “sleep mode” but still continue to send a PWM voltage signal to the trailer tow connector every 4 seconds to detect when a trailer is connected. When the ignition key is in the RUN position and the module is in sleep mode, pressing a gain button or sliding the manual switch will cause the module to “wake up”. If a trailer is not connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds, then the trailer icon should illuminate red and the IC message center should display TRAILER DISCONNECTED or CHECK TRAILER. If a trailer is connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds and then the trailer icon should illuminate green. Inspection and Verification NOTE: A trailer brake emulator tool is available to verify that the TBC module and vehicle wiring are functioning correctly. 1. Verify the TBC system is correctly installed by checking that the vehicle is equipped with a brake pressure transducer on the master cylinder. If the brake pressure transducer is not present, then the TBC system has been erroneously installed. 2. Verify the customer concern. 3. NOTE: The TBC does not function with electric-over-hydraulic or surge trailer brake types. Verify that the trailer brakes are electric-actuated drum type brakes. 4. Verify the stoplamps operate correctly by applying and releasing the brake pedal with the ignition switch in the OFF position and the trailer disconnected. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to Section 417-01 . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step. 5. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart 6. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: * check that the program card is correctly installed. * check the connections to the vehicle. * check the ignition switch position. 7. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual. 8. Carry out the scan tool data link test. If the scan tool responds with: * CAN, ISO, or UBP circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 . * No response/not equipped for the TBC, GO to Pinpoint Test A . * System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the TBC and the antilock brake system (ABS) module. 9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart to continue diagnosis. 10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart to continue diagnosis. NOTE: Always retrieve the continuous DTCs after running the self-test.

Adjust the TCC brake switch as necessary. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Adjustment in Hydraulic Brakes. Did the TCC brake switch require adjustment? — Go to Step 9 Go to Step 7 6 1. Test the power feed circuit (CKT 1039) of the TCC brake switch for an open. 2. Test the input circuit (CKT 420) of the TCC brake switch for an open. 1999-2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2000-2002 CHEVROLET TAHOE, SUBURBAN 2002 CHEVROLET AVALANCHE 1999-2002 GMC SIERRA 2000-2002 GMC YUKON, YUKON XL LOCATED IN THE SEVERE CORROSION AREAS LISTED BELOW Service Procedure The following procedure provides instructions for repairing a corrosion condition where the front wheel speed sensor mounts on the front wheel bearing assembly. 1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist and support as necessary. 2. Remove both front tires and wheels. 3. Compress the front brake caliper pistons. 3.1. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad. 3.2. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the pistons are pushed completely into the caliper bores. 3.3. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper. Important: It is not necessary to remove the front brake caliper from the bracket when removing the bracket in the next step. 4. Remove the two bolts that attach the front brake caliper mounting brackets to the knuckle. Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic’s wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount, and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak. 5. Remove the brake caliper and bracket as an assembly and support it with heavy mechanic’s wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper. 6. Mark the relationship of the rotor to the bearing hub. 7. If equipped, remove the rotor retaining push nuts from the wheel studs

The standard design has a thin disc and a handbrake of small diameter and swept area relative to the weight of the vehicle. 2 The backing plate and handbrake arrangement allow mud and slurry to enter but not exit, causing abrasives to accumulate and rapidly destroy the handbrake, including its function as an emergency brake. 3 The small disc pad contact area is at odds with the affects of loading under abrasive conditions where rates of wear are parabolic for wear rate versus load. 4 The handbrake design is fiddly and complicated with many small parts that prove to be difficult to assemble correctly. Hoppers Stoppers design solution There appear to be a few possible ways to approach this problem, with a couple of companies proposing designs. Some take unconventional and unusual approaches but appear expensive to purchase and repair; with their application probably only justified if they perform perfectly for a very long time. Hoppers Stoppers’ approach is to stick to proven principles and overcome the basic weakness of the existing design. By all reports, the front brakes on these Toyotas work adequately, and considering their environment do not give significant problems in the field. In our view these brakes are not particularly special in their engineering, just the same basic front brakes that they have made for many years.
