REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Catera Open the hood. 1. Remove the windshield wiper arm stud cap that conceals the nut. 2. Remove the windshield wiper arm nut. 3. Grasp the windshield wiper arm with both hands. 4. Use a rocking motion to loosen the windshield wiper arm from the pivots. 5. Remove the windshield wiper arm and blade. 6. To install: Installation is the reversal of the removal procedure. 7. Deville and Fleetwood WIPER ARM Raise the hood as needed for access to the wiper arms. 1. Operate the wipers and turn the ignition OFF when the wipers are at the mid-wipe position. 2. Lift the wiper arm from the windshield. 3. On 1990 vehicles, pull the retaining latch and remove the arm from the transmission shaft. 4. On 1991-93 vehicles, disengage the retaining latch using a suitable tool and remove the arm from the transmission shaft. 5. To install: Install the wiper arm onto the transmission shaft. 6. Push the retaining latch in and return the arm assembly to the windshield. 7. Park the wipers. If adjustment is necessary, proceed as follows: Remove the right wiper arm. a. Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. With the key on, the engine off and the coolant level sensor disconnected from the vehicle wiring harness, observe the low coolant light: Subject: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On (Diagnose Low Coolant Level System Operation/Check Sensor for Oil Contamination) Models: 2000-2002 Buick Century, Regal 2000-2001 Chevrolet Lumina 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo 2000-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue • Light is on — Chassis wiring or instrument cluster concern. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

Correction 1. Visually inspect the tires and the wheels. Inspect for evidence of the following conditions and correct as necessary: 2. Set the tire pressure to 30 psi (205 kPa) COLD. Subject: Shake/Vibration in Steering Wheel, Floor, Seat at Highway Speeds on Smooth Roads (Diagnose/Balance Tires/Wheels) Models: 1998-2005 Buick Park Avenue, Park Avenue Ultra 2000-2005 Buick LeSabre 1998-2004 Cadillac Seville (SLS, STS) 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille (DTS only) 2001-2003 Oldsmobile Aurora 2000-2005 Pontiac Bonneville (17″ Tires only) • Missing balance weights • Bent rim flange • Irregular tire wear • Incomplete bead seating • Tire irregularities • Mud/ice build-up in wheel • Stones in the tire tread © 2009 General Motors Corporation. All rights reserved 3. Road test the vehicle with the Electronic Vibration Analyzer (EVA) essential tool for a sufficient distance on a known, smooth road surface to duplicate the condition. Record the Hertz (Hz) reading as displayed by the EVA onto the tire data worksheet found at the end of this bulletin. This should be done after a tire break-in period of at least 10 miles (16 km) at 45 mph (72 km/h) or greater, in order to eliminate any possible tire flat-spotting. 4. If the road test indicates a shake/vibration still exists, check the imbalance of each tire/wheel assembly on a known, calibrated, off-car dynamic balancer. If any assembly calls for more than ¼ ounce on either rim flange, remove all balance weights and rebalance to as close to zero as possible. Important: Some GM dealers may have a Hunter GSP9700 Road Force Balancer, or a Coats XR1850 Runout Balancer. Either will simplify Step 5 by not requiring dial indicators. If a Hunter GSP9700 machine is available, it may also be used to measure the radial force of the tire/wheel assembly. A guideline here is 18 lbs or less. 5. While on the balancer, measure wheel runout. If radial or lateral runout exceeds .020 in (0.50 mm) for aluminum wheels (.030 in (0.76 mm) for steel wheels), replace the wheel. 6. After confirming wheel balance and wheel runout, if any changes were made, road test the vehicle again. 7. If the smooth road shake/vibration still exists: Important: THE CONTROL ARMS SHOULD ONLY BE INSTALLED ON VEHICLES IF, AFTER THE TIRE AND WHEEL DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIRS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED, THE VIBRATION CONDITION STILL EXISTS. 8. Replace both lower control arms on vehicles built prior to the following VIN breakpoints. On Aurora, Bonneville, DeVille, Park Avenue, Park Avenue Ultra and Seville models, a newly developed hydro-bushing lower control arm with improved damping characteristics has been released. This control arm is not used on the LeSabre. The new lower control arms may provide an incremental improvement to the vehicle ride. Customers who have become “tuned in” to the shake condition may still feel some shake in the vehicle after the new lower control arms are installed. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement in SI (refer to the Parts Information table below for SI document ID numbers) . Important: The completed worksheet must be attached to the hard copy of the repair order. • If a Hunter GSP9700 Road Force/Balancing machine is used, record radial force variation (RFV) on the worksheet at the end of this bulletin. If one or more of the tire/wheel assemblies read more than 18 lbs, match mount the tire to the wheel to get below 18 lbs. Readings of 12 lbs or less are preferable for sensitive customers. • If a Coats XR1850 Runout/Balancing Machine is used, record radial runout of the tire/wheel assemblies on the worksheet at the end of this bulletin. If one or more of the tire/wheel assemblies are more than .040, match mount the tire to the wheel to get below .040. Readings of .030 inch or less are preferable for sensitive customers. • If the RFV or runout cannot be reduced to an acceptable level, replace the affected tire(s) under the guidelines of the GM Tire Warranty. • The screened tire program is only available for the General branded tires used on the Buick LeSabre. Complete the tire request form at the end of this bulletin and fax to Continental/General. • Road test the vehicle to ensure the shake/vibration has been eliminated

Disassembly 1. Remove dash panel bracket and store bracket in a safe place to prevent damage to mounting capsules. 2. Place column in a vise using both weld nuts of either set A or B, Fig. 29. The vise jaws must clamp onto the sides of weld nuts indicated by arrows shown on set B. Do not place column in vise by clamping onto only one weld nut, by clamping on one weld nut of both sets A and B or by clamping onto the sides not indicated by arrows, as damage to column could result. 3. Inspect steering shaft to determine type of thread used for steering shaft nut. Metric type shafts can be identified by a groove located in area of steering wheel locating splines, while shafts with American type threads do not have this groove. If shaft has metric type threads, the forcing screw of Lock Plate Compressor Tool J-23653 must be removed and replaced with the metric forcing screw J-23653-4 before installing lock plate compressor tool on steering shaft. Compress lock plate using lock plate compressor tool, then pry snap ring from shaft groove and discard wing. Remove lock plate compressor tool and lock plate. 4. Remove directional signal switch, lock cylinder and ignition key warning switch, then remove steering shaft from lower end of column. 5. On power steering columns, remove steering shaft lower bearing from plastic adapter at lower end of column. 6. Remove four turn signal housing to column jacket retaining screws and remove housing and shroud assembly. 7. Remove three shroud to signal housing retaining screws and remove shroud. 8. Using hand as shield to prevent lock inhibitor lever spring wire from flying out, remove lock inhibitor lever and spring wire. 9. Lift ignition switch actuating rod, rack assembly, shaft lock bolt and spring assembly from housing, then if necessary, remove rack preload spring. 10. Remove ignition switch actuator sector through lock cylinder hole by pushing firmly on block tooth of sector with a blunt punch or screwdriver.
