Clean and check the brake pad mating surfaces in the brake caliper and caliper holder. Check piston dust boot. NOTE: If the dust boot is damaged dirt may have penetrated the cylinder. Removal WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer’s specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury. WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake fluid to come in contact with the adhesive backing on the brake pads. If brake fluid is spilled onto the brake pads, new pads must be installed. CAUTION: Use only specified brake parts cleaner. Use of other cleaners may leave a residue on the brake caliper preventing the brake pads adhesive surface from bonding with the brake caliper. 1. Remove the wheel and tire. 2. Check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. * If required, remove fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full. 3. Remove the brake caliper bolts. 4. CAUTION: Do not use the brake caliper sight hole to retract the pistons as this may damage the pistons and boots. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose may occur. CAUTION: Care must be taken when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever. Carefully position the caliper aside using a suitable support or damage to the parking brake cable end fittings may occur. Using hand force and a rocking motion, separate the brake caliper from the anchor plate. Position the brake caliper aside. * Support the caliper with mechanic’s wire. 5. CAUTION: When the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper , new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise. The brake pads are one-time use only. Remove and discard the brake pads and spring clips from the brake caliper anchor plate. 6. NOTE: Do not remove the anchor plate guide pins. The guide pins are press fit to the brake caliper anchor plate. If the guide pins are damaged a new anchor plate must be installed. Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate assembly. * Check the guide pins and boots for binding or damage. * Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if it is worn or damaged. Installation 1. NOTE: To move the piston back into the caliper, the LH piston is turned clockwise and the RH piston is turned counterclockwise. NOTE: A moderate to heavy force toward the caliper piston must be applied. If sufficient force is not applied, the internal park brake mechanism clutch cone will not engage and the piston will not compress. Using the special tool (or equivalent such as OTC tool 7317A), compress the brake caliper piston into its cylinder. 2. Clean the residual adhesive from the brake caliper fingers and pistons using the specified brake parts cleaner. 3. CAUTION: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pad or caliper mating surface or damage to components may occur. Do not install contaminated pads. NOTE: Install all the new hardware supplied with brake pad kit. Install the new spring clips and brake pads. 4. Position the brake caliper and install the 2 bolts. * Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft). 5. If necessary, fill the brake fluid reservoir with clean, specified brake fluid. 6. With the vehicle engine running, apply 89-133 N (20-30 lb) of pressure on the brakes for approximately one minute, to make sure the brake pads adhere to the caliper before any contamination can be introduced. 7. Test the brakes for normal operation.

Inspection 1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 2. Remove the rear wheels. 3. Check the thickness (A) of the inner pad (B) and the outer pad (C). Do not include the thickness of the backing plate. 4. If any part of the brake pad thickness is less than the service limit, replace the rear brake pads as a set. 5. Clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels Replacement 1. Remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder. 2. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 3. Remove the rear wheels. 4. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A). 5. Remove the flange bolts (B) while holding respective caliper pin (C) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot, and remove the caliper (D). Check the hose and pin boots for damage and deterioration. NOTE: Do not twist the brake hose and the parking brake cable to prevent damage. 6. Remove the pad shims (A) and the brake pads (B). 7. Remove the pad retainers (A). 8. Clean the caliper bracket (B) thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks. Verify that the caliper pins (C) move in and out smoothly. Clean and lube if needed. 9. Inspect the brake disc for runout, thickness, parallelism and check for damage and cracks. 10. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the retainer mating surface of the caliper bracket (indicated by the arrows). 11. Install the pad retainers. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Keep the assembly paste off the brake disc and brake pads. 12. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the pad side of the shims (A), the back of the brake pads (B), and the other areas indicated by the arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the pad shims and the brake pads friction material. Keep grease and assembly paste off the brake disc and the brake pads. Contaminated brake disc or brake pads reduce stopping ability. 13. Install the brake pads and the pad shims correctly. Install the brake pad with the wear indicator (C) on the bottom inside. If you are reusing the brake pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency

SERVICE PROCEDURE To service, reduce/minimize moisture intrusion into the rear drum brake assemblies by applying Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the brake backing plate . WARNING Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. 1. Place vehicle on hoist and remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the rear brake drums and replace the rear linings. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-02. 3. Inspect the rear brake assemblies for damaged, missing and/or improperly seated adjuster plug or parking brake cable . 4. Inspect and clean the lining contact area of the brake drum ; machine if necessary. 5. Reinstall the rear brake drums and adjust the lining to drum clearance per WSM, Section 206-02. 6. Thoroughly clean the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate to promote proper adhesion of sealant. Zoom Sized for Print 7. Apply Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate at the following inter[ace areas (Figure 1): ^Axle Flange ^ Wheel Cylinder ^ Parking Brake Cable ^Hold Down Pins 8. Reinstall the rear wheels and torque lug nuts per Workshop Manual, Section 204-04.

Toyota Landcruiser Rear Brake Upgrade Package HOPPERS STOPPERS HOPPERS STOPPERS HOPPERS STOPPERS HOPPERS STOPPERS 4 4 4 4 Rear Brake Upgrade Package 78/79 Series Toyota Landcruiser Cause of Rear Brake Problems 1 Combining a drum handbrake and a disc rotor and caliper within the confines of a 16-inch wheel necessitates a small brake caliper and small pad radial section, resulting in an undersized pad area. The standard design has a thin disc and a handbrake of small diameter and swept area relative to the weight of the vehicle. 2 The backing plate and handbrake arrangement allow mud and slurry to enter but not exit, causing abrasives to accumulate and rapidly destroy the handbrake, including its function as an emergency brake. 3 The small disc pad contact area is at odds with the affects of loading under abrasive conditions where rates of wear are parabolic for wear rate versus load. 4 The handbrake design is fiddly and complicated with many small parts that prove to be difficult to assemble correctly. Hoppers Stoppers design solution There appear to be a few possible ways to approach this problem, with a couple of companies proposing designs. Some take unconventional and unusual approaches but appear expensive to purchase and repair; with their application probably only justified if they perform perfectly for a very long time. Hoppers Stoppers’ approach is to stick to proven principles and overcome the basic weakness of the existing design. By all reports, the front brakes on these Toyotas work adequately, and considering their environment do not give significant problems in the field. In our view these brakes are not particularly special in their engineering, just the same basic front brakes that they have made for many years. If we built a rear brake set as solid and even better designed than the front it should last as long. This requires a big, thick disc rotor and brake lining swept area similar to the front
