EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE SERVICE INFORMATION ^LAMP – “EMISSIONS/CHECK ENGINE” – EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE – SERVICE INFORMATION LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-89 BRONCO 1985-87 BRONCO II 1985-89 ECONOLINE, F- 150, F-250, F-350 1985-88 RANGER 1986-87 AEROSTAR ISSUE: The Emission Maintenance Warning “EMW” module operates a light that is located on the instrument panel. For 1985-87 model year vehicles, the light will display the word “EMISSIONS”. For 1988-89 model year vehicles, the light will display the words “CHECK ENGINE”. When the light is lit, it is indicating that the 60,000 mile emission maintenance should be performed. After the maintenance is performed the EMW module must be reset to zero time. Another type of module is the “IMS” module. This module is not part of the light circuit and does not require maintenance. At a predetermined time, the IMS module directs the EEC IV processor to make a strategy change. A third type of module is the “COMBO” module. This module combines the functions of the IMS and the EMW modules. ACTION: Refer to the following module application charts for the specific vehicle application and location of the different types of modules. NOTE: FOR APPLICATIONS NOT LOSTED IN THE FOLLOWING MODULE APPLICATION CHARTS, THE “CHECK ENGINE” LIGHT IS CONTROLLED BY THE EEC IV PROCESSOR. THESE VEHICLES DO NOT USE THE “EMW” MODULE

Use this schedule if the vehicle is driven MAINLY in Canada or in any of the following conditions; if only OCCASIONALLY driven in these conditions, use the Normal Conditions schedule. Severe Driving Conditions ?Driving less than 5 miles (8 km) per trip in freezing temperatures, or driving less than 10 miles (16 km) per trip. ?Driving in extremely hot (over 90 ºF/32 ºC) conditions. ?Extensive idling, or long periods of stop-and-go driving, such as a taxi or a commercial delivery vehicle. ?Driving on muddy, dusty, or de-iced roads. ?Trailer towing, driving with a roof rack, or driving in mountainous conditions. However, Honda recommends that all maintenance services be done at the recommended intervals to ensure long-term reliability. ? Replace engine oil, every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months. ? Engine oil capacity-D17A1 engine without oil filter: 3.0 L (3.2 US qt), D17A2 and D17A6 engines without oil filter: 3.3 L (3.5 US qt). ? Replace engine oil filter, every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 1 year. ? Engine oil capacity-D17A1 engine with oil filter: 3.2 L (3.4 US qt), D17A2 and D17A6 engines with oil filter: 3.5 L (3.7 US qt). ? Check front and rear brakes, every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 1 year. ?Check pads and discs for wear (thickness), damage, and cracks. ?Check calipers for damage, leaks, and tightness of mount bolts. ?Check wheel cylinders for leaks. ?Check brake linings for cracking, glazing, wear, or contamination. ? Lubricate all hinges, locks, and latches, every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 1 year. ? Rotate tires, and check tire inflation and condition, every 10,000 miles (16,000 km). ? Follow the pattern shown in the Owner’s Manual. ? Inspect tie rod ends, steering gearbox, and gearbox boots, every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 1 year. ?Check rack grease and steering linkage. ?Check boots for damage and leaking grease. ?Check fluid lines for damage and leaks. ? Removal and Installation REMOVAL NOTE: * Turn the crankshaft pulley so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) before removing the belt. * Inspect the water pump after removing the timing belt. * Replace the timing belt and timing balancer belt at 105,000 miles (168,000 km) according to the maintenance schedule (normal conditions/severe conditions). If the vehicle is regularly driven in one or more of the following conditions, replace the timing belt and timing balancer belt at 60,000 miles (U.S.A.) 100,000 km (Canada). * In very high temperatures (over 110°F, 43°C). * In very low temperatures (under -20°F, -29°C). 1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio’s preset buttons. 2. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal. 3. Remove the wheel well splash shield. 4. Loosen the adjusting bolt, locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt. 5. Remove the alternator terminal and connector. 6. Loosen the adjusting bolt, mounting bolt and lock nut, then remove the alternator belt. 7. Remove the side engine mount. NOTE: * Support the engine with a jack before removing the side engine mount and upper bracket assembly is removed. * Make sure to place a cushion between the oil pan and the jack 8. Remove the dipstick and the tube. 9. Remove the cylinder head cover. NOTE: The procedures in steps 10 and 11 are for reusing the timing belt. For replacing the timing belt, skip these procedures and go to step 12. 10. Use an open-end wrench to loosen the maintenance bolt. If it cannot be loosened with an open-end wrench, a box wrench can be used after removing the lock pin. NOTE: Use of a tool should be limited to initial loosening only 11. Unscrew the maintenance bolt by hand until it stops. The auto-tensioner bracket is now fixed. NOTE: * Never use a tool to unscrew the maintenance bolt after initial loosening it. * If the auto-tensioner has been extended and the timing belt cannot be installed, remove the auto-tensioner, compress it and reinstall it. 12. Remove the middle cover. NOTE: Do not use the middle cover to store removed items. 13. Remove the pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley

Correction Replace the ignition coil/module assembly and add ground strap following the procedure below. 1. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the left side spark plug wires from the ignition coil. 3. Disconnect the right side spark plug wires from the ignition coil. 4. Remove the four bolts attaching the ignition coil to its mounting bracket and remove the ignition coil. 5. Remove the ignition coil from the mounting bracket. 6. Loosen the two lower ignition coil mounting bracket nuts. 7. Remove the two upper ignition coil mounting bracket bolts and discard. Subject: Loss of Power Steering Assist, Power Steering Warning Message Displayed in DIC, IPC/Radio Displays Erratic, DTC C0900, B1325 Set (Replace Ignition Coil/Module Assembly and Add Ground Strap) Models: 2004-2006 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx with 3.5L Engine (VINs 8, N — RPOs LX9, LZ4) 8. Install the ground strap (1), P/N 12581176, to the upper left side of the bracket as shown between the coil bracket and intake. Install the new bracket bolt, P/N 11570082, (do not tighten at this time). Prior to installing the ground strap, remove the captured nut and washers. They are not needed (simply pound them out with a hammer on a vise). 9. Install the washer (2), P/N 02436162, to the upper right side of the bracket between the coil bracket and intake. Install the new bracket bolt, P/N 11570082, (do not tighten at this time). Tighten Tighten all the ignition coil bracket bolts and nuts to 25 N·m (15 lb ft). 10. Install the new ignition coil to the mounting bracket. 11. Install the other end of the ground strap to the coil as shown and secure using a new bolt, P/N 11588715. 12. Install the other three ignition coil bolts. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in). 13. Connect the right side spark plug wires to the ignition coil. 14. Connect the left side spark plug wires to the ignition coil. 15. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector

Removal Procedure Important: The intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rail, and injectors may be removed as an assembly. If not servicing the individual components, remove the manifold as a complete assembly. 1. Remove the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls – 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L. 2. Remove the fuel injectors. Refer to Fuel Injector Replacement in Engine Controls – 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L. 3. Disconnect the following electrical connectors: 4. Remove the knock sensor harness electrical connector from the intake manifold. 5. Set the electrical harness aside. <- Back Forward -> Document ID# 738735 2002 Chevrolet Chevy Suburban – 4WD Print – Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor (1) – Knock sensor (2) – Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, if equipped. 6. If equipped, remove the following EGR pipe bolts: 7. If equipped, remove the EGR pipe with valve. 8. If equipped, remove the EGR pipe gasket from the exhaust manifold If equipped with vacuum assisted brakes, remove the vacuum brake booster hose from the rear of the intake manifold.

DO NOT disassemble the Control Valve Body from the Case Cover. Remove ONLY the Case Cover-to- Case bolts to remove the Case Cover and Valve Body from Transmission Case AS AN ASSEMBLY . To access all Case Cover-to-Case bolts, it is necessary to remove the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Assembly (322), and 1-2 & 3-4 Shift Solenoid Valve Assemblies (315A, 315B).

Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Replacement Pickup Removal Procedure Important Clean the evaporative emission (EVAP) connections and surrounding areas prior to disconnecting the fittings in order to avoid possible system contamination. 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. 2. Remove the harness clip from the canister vent solenoid (CVS) line. 3. Disconnect the CVS electrical connector. 2004 Chevrolet Chevy K Silverado – 4WD 4. If the vehicle is equipped with a 6 ft box, disconnect the EVAP CVS line from the canister. 5. Remove the CVS clip from the frame crossmember. 6. Push in the retainer and remove the CVS from the fuel tank clip. 7. If the vehicle is equipped with a 8 ft box, disconnect the EVAP CVS line from the canister. 8. Remove the CVS clip from the frame crossmember. 9. Push in the retainer and remove the CVS from the fuel tank clip. Installation Procedure 1. If the vehicle is equipped with a 8 ft box, install the CVS to the fuel tank until the clip engages. Important On vehicles equipped with a 8 ft box, the CVS line is routed below the frame crossmember. 2. Install the CVS clip to the frame crossmember. 3. Connect the EVAP CVS line to the canister. 4. If the vehicle is equipped with a 6 ft box, install the CVS to the fuel tank until the clip engages. Important On vehicles equipped with a 6 ft box, the CVS line is routed above the frame crossmember. 5. Install the CVS clip to the frame crossmember. 6. Connect the EVAP CVS line to the canister. 7. Connect the CVS electrical connector. 8. Install the harness clip to the canister vent solenoid (CVS) line. 9. Lower the vehicle.

Manual A/C REMOVAL PROCEDURE CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 3. Remove the instrument panel storage compartment. 4. Disconnect the passenger side SIR. 5. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 6. Remove the left and right front speaker grilles. 7. Remove the center instrument panel sound insulator. 8. Remove the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 9. Disconnect the park brake release cable. 10. Remove the knee bolster. 11. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 12. Remove the BCM. 13. Disconnect the driver side SIR. 14. Remove the instrument panel cluster. 15. Remove the radio. 16. Remove the HVAC control assembly. 17. Remove the steering column retaining retaining nuts. 18. Lower the steering column. 19. Remove the instrument panel carrier. 20. Remove the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 21. Disconnect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 22. Remove the hood. 23. Remove the VCM. 24. Remove the coolant recovery tank. 25. Remove the heater hoses. 26. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the grille mounted lamps. 27. Remove the right front headlamp assembly. 28. Remove the front bumper. 29. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. 30. Disconnect the radio antenna cable. 31. Disconnect the electrical connector for the horn. 32. Remove the right fender. 33. Remove the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 34. Remove the blower motor resistor. 35. Remove the evaporator case bolts and screws. 36. Remove the accumulator. 37. Remove the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 38. Remove the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. 39. Pull back lightly on the heater case to remove the evaporator case. 40. Remove the evaporator case retaining screws. 41. Disassemble the evaporator case sections, and remove the evaporator core. NOTE: If replacing the evaporator core, remove the expansion (orofice) tube and install it into the new core. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Install the evaporator core. 2. Assemble the evaporator case sections. 3. Install the evaporator case retaining screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 in lb) . 4. Install the evaporator core assembly to the vehicle. 5. Install the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. Tighten the bolts to 4.5 N.m (40 lb in) . 6. Install the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 7. Install the accumulator. 1998 Chevy Truck S10/T10 Blazer 2WD 8. Install the evaporator case bolts and screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 In in) . 9. Install the blower motor resistor. 10. Install the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 11. Install the right fender. 12. Connect the electrical connector for the horn. 13. Install the radio antenna cable. 14. Install the right wheelhouse panel. 15. Install the front bumper. 16. Install the right front headlamp assembly. 17. Connect the electrical connectors to the grille mounted lamps. 18. Install the heater hoses. 19. Install the coolant recovery tank. 20. Install the VCM. 21. Install the hood. 22. Connect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 23. Install the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 24. Install the instrument panel carrier. 25. Reposition the the steering column, and install the steering column retaining nuts. 26. Install the HVAC control assembly. 27. Install the radio. 28. Install the instrument panel cluster. 29. Connect the driver side SIR. 30. Install the BCM. 31. Install the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 32. Install the knee bolster. 33. Connect the park brake release cable. 34. Install the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 35. Install the center instrument panel sound insulator. 36. Install the left and right front speaker grilles. 37. Install the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 38. Connect the passenger side SIR. 39. Install the instrument panel storage compartment. 40. Install the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 41. Connect the negative battery cable. 42. Inspect the system for leaks.
