CAUTION: Vehicle cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or an equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A. NOTE: Less than 80% of the coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement. 1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the pressure relief cap one half to one turn counterclockwise to the first stop on the filler neck. When the pressure has been released, remove the pressure relief cap. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 3. Remove the front splash shield. 4. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock. Drain the coolant. 5. Close the radiator draincock when finished. Filling and Bleeding With RADKITPLUS 1. Using the special tool, install the RADKITPLUS and follow the RADKITPLUS manufacturer’s instructions to fill and bleed the cooling system. Filling Without RADKITPLUS CAUTION: Engine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and clean, drinkable water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system: * Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant VC-4-A (in Oregon VC-5, in Canada CXC-10) or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A. * Do not add Motorcraft Specialty Engine Coolant VC-2 or an equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D. Mixing coolants may degrade the coolant’s corrosion protection. * Do not add alcohol, methanol, brine or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. * Do not mix with recycled coolant unless it meets the requirement of specification ESE-M97B44-A. Not all coolant recycling processes meet this specification. Use of such a coolant may harm the engine and cooling system components. 1. Install the front splash shield. 2. Lower the vehicle. 3. Fill the degas bottle with the correct engine coolant mixture. 4. Install the pressure relief cap. 5. Move the temperature blend selector to the full warm position. 6. WARNING: Do not stand in line with or near the engine cooling fan blade when revving the engine. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature. 7. Add the correct coolant mixture to the degas bottle until the coolant level is between the COOLANT FILL LEVEL marks. 8. Turn off the engine and allow the cooling system to cool. Recheck the coolant level and fill the cooling system to the FULL mark on the degas bottle. 9. WARNING: Do not stand in line with or near the engine cooling fan blade when revving the engine. Repeat Steps 3 through 8 until the reservoir level is OK. Bleeding Without RADKITPLUS 1. Bleed the cooling system as follows: * Select the maximum heater temperature and blower motor speed settings. Position the control to discharge air from the A/C vents in the instrument panel. * WARNING: Do not stand in line with or near the engine cooling fan blade when revving the engine. Start the engine and allow it to idle. While the engine is idling, feel for hot air from the A/C vents. * CAUTION: If the air discharge remains cool and the engine coolant temperature gauge does not move, the engine coolant level is low in the engine and must be filled. Stop the engine, allow it to cool and fill the cooling system. Start the engine and allow it to idle until the normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from the A/C vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stabilized reading in the middle of the NORMAL range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch. * Shut the engine off and allow it to cool. * Check the engine for coolant leaks. * Check the engine coolant level in the degas bottle and fill it as necessary.

Aligning Timing Marks (2001-02 Montero) Courtesy of MITSUBISHI MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA. Installation (2001-02 Montero) 1. Place auto-tensioner in soft-jawed vise to SLOWLY compress the push rod. If there is a plug at the base of the auto-tensioner body, place flat washer around plug so it will not contact vise jaw. 2. Slowly compress auto-tensioner push rod until holes in push rod and auto-tensioner housing are aligned. Insert a locking pin into the alignment holes. Install auto-tensioner on engine. 3. Ensure all timing marks are still aligned. See Fig. 11 . Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, left bank camshaft sprocket, water pump pulley, right bank camshaft sprocket, and tensioner CAUTION: Never compress the auto-tensioner too fast, or the push rod will be damaged. WARNING: Right bank camshaft can easily turn from applied spring pressure. Be careful not to pinch fingers when installing timing belt. 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited MITSUBISHI 3.5L V6 – SOHC many waters gallery pulley. Take all slack out of timing belt. 4. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767), rotate tensioner pulley against timing belt. Temporarily tighten tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Crankshaft Pulley Spacer (MD998769), turn crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Turn crankshaft 1/4 turn clockwise. Ensure all timing belt marks are still aligned. 5. Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Position tensioner pin holes at bottom of tensioner. Install Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767) on tensioner pulley. See Fig. 12 . Using torque wrench, apply 39 INCH lbs. (4.4 N.m) of torque (counterclockwise direction) to tensioner pulley. Tighten tensioner center bolt to specification while holding tensioner pulley stationary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 6. Remove locking pin from auto-tensioner. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise and align all timing marks. DO NOT rotate counterclockwise. 7. Wait for at least 5 minutes, then check auto-tensioner push rod protrusion. To check push rod protrusion, measure clearance between body of auto-tensioner and bottom of tensioner pulley bracket arm. Clearance should be 0.15-0.20″ (3.8-5.0 mm). If protrusion is not correct, repeat timing belt tensioning procedure. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. 8. Install timing belt covers. See Fig. 10 . Install crankshaft pulley. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install accessory mount assembly on front of engine. See Fig. 13 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedures. See Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 . Adjust drive belts to proper tension. 9. When filling cooling system, use 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Open bleed screw on top of thermostat housing. Slowly fill cooling system until coolant flows out of bleed hole. Install bleed screw. Start engine and run to normal operating temperature. Race engine to 3000 RPM several times. Stop engine. After engine cools, refill radiator and coolant reservoir tank.

Draining and Filling Cooling System Notes Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining Procedure Important: Do NOT add any engine coolant supplement sealant pellets to the cooling system. Drain and refill the engine cooling system every 5 years or 240 000 km, (150,000 ml) , whichever occurs first. 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. 2. Remove and clean the coolant recovery reservoir. Caution: To avoid being burned, do not remove the radiator cap or surge tank cap while the engine is hot. The cooling system will release scalding fluid and steam under pressure if radiator cap or surge tank cap its removed while the engine and radiator are still hot. 3.1. Slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the detention tab. Do not press down while rotating pressure cap. 3.2. Wait until any residual pressure, indicated by a hissing sound, is relieved. 3.3. After all hissing stops, press down on the radiator cap and rotate the cap counterclockwise in order to remove the cap. Important: Recover and store used coolant in a used coolant holding tank and submit the used coolant for recycling on a regular basis. Do NOT pour used coolant down the drain. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is very toxic. Disposing of ethylene glycol into the sewer system or ground water is both illegal and ecologically unsound. 4. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock in order to collect all of the used coolant. 5. Open the radiator drain cock. If only partial cooling system draining is required, drain enough coolant to perform the procedure 6. Open the air bleed valve on the thermostat housing 2 full turns. 7. Open the air bleed valve above coolant pump 2 full turns. 8. Place a drain pan under the engine block drains in order to collect the used coolant. Important: Allow the coolant to drain completely

Set-up & Procedure: 1. Ensure the cooling system is cool and not pressurized. Carefully remove the radiator or coolant bottle pressure cap (Fig. 1). 2. Check to see that the radiator or coolant bottle is filled to the proper level, and check hoses for visual damage or leaks. Fill and repair as necessary prior to testing. 3. Select the correct Cooling System Adapter for the application. 4. Apply water or coolant to the rubber gasket and/or o-ring on the adapter, and install the adapter in place of the pressure cap (Fig. 2). 5. Secure one end of the clear hose to the pressure pump using the compression nut (Fig. 3). 6. Secure the second end of the hose to the cooling system test adapter using the compression nut (Fig. 4). 7. Note the operating pressure of the cooling system indicated on the cap or in the vehicle repair manual. 8. Operate the Pressure Pump until the needle on the pressure gauge moves to the arrowhead at the end of the colored band indicating the appropriate pressure range of the cap (see Chart A). Caution : Do not pressurize the cooling system beyond the appropriate color of arrowhead for the system being tested. 9. Monitor the gauge for at least two minutes. If the pressure reading drops, a leak is present. 10. With the system still pressurized, perform a visual inspection of the entire cooling system. Check hoses and connections for seepage, which would indicate a leak. Return to the gauge and check the reading once more.

REMOVAL 1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT 2. REMOVE RADIATOR GRILLE Remove the 7 clips and radiator grille. 3. DISCONNECT UPPER RADIATOR HOSE 4. DISCONNECT RADIATOR RESERVOIR HOSE 5. DISCONNECT LOWER RADIATOR HOSE 6. REMOVE RADIATOR NO.2 FAN SHROUD 7. A/T: DISCONNECT OIL COOLER HOSES 8. REMOVE RADIATOR Remove the 4 bolts and the radiator. DISASSEMBLY 1. REMOVE NO.1 FAN SHROUD Remove the 4 bolts and No. 1 fan shroud. 2. REMOVE RADIATOR SUPPORTS 3. REMOVE DRAIN PLUG 4. ASSEMBLE SST SST 09230-01010 a. Install the claw to the overhaul handle, inserting it in the hole in part “A” as shown in the diagram. b. While gripping the handle, adjust the stopper bolt so that dimension “B” shown in the diagram is 0.2 – 0.3 mm (0.008 – 0.012 inch). NOTICE: If this adjustment is not done, the claw may be damaged. 5. UNCAULK LOCK PLATES Using SST to release the caulking, squeeze the handle until stopped by the stopper bolt. SST 09230-01010 6. REMOVE TANKS AND O-RINGS a. Lightly tap the radiator port (inlet or outlet) with a soft faced hammer, and remove the tank. b. Remove the O-ring. REASSEMBLY 1. INSPECT LOCK PLATE Inspect the lock plate for damage. HINT: If the sides of the lock plate groove are deformed, reassembly of the tank will be impossible. NOTICE: The radiator can only be recaulked 2 times. After the 2nd time, the radiator core must be replaced. 2. INSTALL NEW O-RINGS AND TANKS a. After checking that there are no foreign objects in the lock plate groove, install the new O-ring without twisting it. HINT: When cleaning the lock plate groove, lightly rub it with sand paper without scratching it. b. Install the tank without damaging the O-ring. c. Tap the lock plate with a soft-faced hammer so that there is no gap between it and the tank. 3. ASSEMBLE SST 09230-01010 a. Install the punch assembly to the overhaul handle, inserting it in the hole in part “A” as shown in the illustration. b. While gripping the handle, adjust the stopper bolt so that dimension “B” shown in the diagram. Dimension “B”: 8.4 mm (0.34 inch) 4. CAULK LOCK PLATE

Explorer and Mountaineer only 1. If equipped, remove the rear entertainment system. For additional information, refer to Section 415-00 . Explorer Sport Trac only 2. NOTE: The headliner is removed through the rear passenger door. To facilitate removal, the front passenger seat must be removed. Remove the front passenger seat. For additional information, refer to Section 501-10 . All vehicles 3. Remove the overhead console. For additional information, refer to Section 501-12 . 4. Remove the A-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to A-Pillar Trim Panel in this section. 5. Position the B-pillar upper trim panel aside. For additional information, refer to B-Pillar Upper Trim Panel in this section. Explorer and Mountaineer only 6. Remove the C-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to C-Pillar Trim Panel — Explorer, Mountaineer in this section. 7. Remove the D-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to D-Pillar Trim Panel in this section. Explorer Sport Trac 8. Position the C-pillar upper trim panel aside. For additional information, refer to C-Pillar Upper Trim Panel — Explorer Sport Trac in this section. All vehicles 9. Remove the gimp around the roof opening panel, if equipped. 10. Remove the 4 sun visor retainer screws. 11. Remove the sun visors. 12. Carefully lower the headliner at the corner of the sun visor location to access the electrical connector and disconnect the electrical connector. 13. Disconnect the roof opening panel, if equipped. 14. Disconnect the interior mirror electrical connector and electronic compass sensor connector, if equipped. 15. Use a thin-blade tool and carefully remove the dome lamp cover. 16. Disconnect the dome lamp electrical connectors. Explorer and Mountaineer only 17. Remove the upper air duct. * Remove the pin-type retainers. * Push down on the duct, tilt the top outward and pull upward to remove. 18. Remove the lower air duct. 19. Disconnect the electrical connector located at the C-pillar. * Release the wiring harness pin-type retainers. 20. Disconnect all the electrical connectors. All vehicles 21. Disconnect the electrical connector and the wiring pin-type retainers on the A-pillar. 22. CAUTION: To prevent bending or damaging the headliner, an assistant is required to support the headliner while carrying out the remaining steps. Open the sun visor center retainer cover and remove the screw. 23. Remove the sun visor center retainer. 24. Remove the rear pin-type retainer. 25. CAUTION: To prevent damaging the garment hanger retainer, use a 3/16-inch flat-blade screwdriver to carry out this step. NOTE: The garment hanger is shown without the roof sheet metal screw to show the metal retainer clip. The metal retainer clip will remain engaged in the sheet metal after the garment hanger is removed. Remove the garment hangers. 1. Open the access door. 2. Insert the flat-blade screwdriver fully into the garment hanger slot. 3. Rotate the screwdriver 90 degrees so that the screwdriver spreads the metal retainer clip. Remove the plastic garment hanger. 26. NOTE: The headliner is removed through the passenger rear door for Explorer Sport Trac. Remove the headliner. 27. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Place a screwdriver against the tensioner pulley and pry it fully back in the direction of the arrow. 4. Temporarily tighten the tensioner pulley bolt. 5. Remove the timing belt. INSTALLATION SERVICE POINTS >> A << TIMING BELT INSTALLATION CAUTION: If the timing belt is to be re-used, use chalk to mark (on its flat side) an arrow indicating the clockwise direction. CAUTION: After installing the timing belt, try to rotate the camshaft sprocket in the reverse direction. Recheck to be sure that the belt is fully tensioned and that each timing mark is in the proper position. 1. With the timing belt tensioner pulley bolt loosened, use a screwdriver to pry the tensioner pulley as close to the engine mount as possible. Then temporarily tighten tensioner bolt. Fig. 81: Adjusting Timing Belt Tensioner Courtesy of MITSUBISHI MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA. 2. Align each of the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket timing marks. 3. Install the timing belt in the following order, while making sure that the tension side of the belt is not loose. 1. Crankshaft sprocket 2. Water pump sprocket 3. Camshaft sprocket 4. Tensioner pulley >> B << TIMING BELT TENSION ADJUSTMENT 1. Initially loosen the fixing bolt of the tensioner pulley fixed to the engine mount side by 1/4-1/2 turn, and use the force of the tensioner spring to apply tension to the belt. 2. Turn the crankshaft in the proper rotation direction (clockwise) for two rotations, and recheck to be sure that the timing marks on each sprocket are aligned.
