Removal WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer’s specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury. WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake fluid to come in contact with the adhesive backing on the brake pads. If brake fluid is spilled onto the brake pads, new pads must be installed. CAUTION: Use only specified brake parts cleaner. Use of other cleaners may leave a residue on the brake caliper preventing the brake pads adhesive surface from bonding with the brake caliper. 1. Remove the wheel and tire. 2. Check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. * If required, remove fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full. 3. Remove the brake caliper bolts. 4. CAUTION: Do not use the brake caliper sight hole to retract the pistons as this may damage the pistons and boots. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose may occur. CAUTION: Care must be taken when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever. Carefully position the caliper aside using a suitable support or damage to the parking brake cable end fittings may occur. Using hand force and a rocking motion, separate the brake caliper from the anchor plate. Position the brake caliper aside. * Support the caliper with mechanic’s wire. 5. CAUTION: When the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper , new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise. The brake pads are one-time use only. Remove and discard the brake pads and spring clips from the brake caliper anchor plate. 6. NOTE: Do not remove the anchor plate guide pins. The guide pins are press fit to the brake caliper anchor plate. If the guide pins are damaged a new anchor plate must be installed. Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate assembly. * Check the guide pins and boots for binding or damage. * Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if it is worn or damaged. Installation 1. NOTE: To move the piston back into the caliper, the LH piston is turned clockwise and the RH piston is turned counterclockwise. NOTE: A moderate to heavy force toward the caliper piston must be applied. If sufficient force is not applied, the internal park brake mechanism clutch cone will not engage and the piston will not compress. Using the special tool (or equivalent such as OTC tool 7317A), compress the brake caliper piston into its cylinder. 2. Clean the residual adhesive from the brake caliper fingers and pistons using the specified brake parts cleaner. 3. CAUTION: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pad or caliper mating surface or damage to components may occur. Do not install contaminated pads. NOTE: Install all the new hardware supplied with brake pad kit. Install the new spring clips and brake pads. 4. Position the brake caliper and install the 2 bolts. * Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft). 5. If necessary, fill the brake fluid reservoir with clean, specified brake fluid. 6. With the vehicle engine running, apply 89-133 N (20-30 lb) of pressure on the brakes for approximately one minute, to make sure the brake pads adhere to the caliper before any contamination can be introduced. 7. Test the brakes for normal operation.

the hub cap and the wheel * the retaining clip and the brake hose from the support * the upper bolt from the locating pin for the brake caliper . Twist the brake caliper backwards. Remove the brake pads. NOTE: Do not depress the brake pedal while the brake pads are removed. Checking and cleaning the rear brake calipers Clean brake pad contact surfaces in the brake caliper and on the caliper mounting. Check the dirt guard for the piston. Replace the dirt guard if it is worn. Recondition the brake caliper if the dirt guard is defective. NOTE: If the dirt guard is defective, dirt may have penetrated the cylinder. Therefore the brake caliper must be reconditioned. Checking the rear brake disc Check the brake disc surface. Check the lateral runout of the brake disc if the disc is uneven. Replace the brake disc if it is worn or grooved. NOTE: Minimum disc thickness = 8.4 mm . If installing new brake pads, the minimum disc thickness must be at least 8.9 mm . Checking the locating pins for the rear brake calipers Check the rubber sleeves on the locating pins. Replace if necessary. If necessary, lubricate the locating pins using Volvo silicon grease (P/N 1161325-4). Insert the locating pins in the rubber sleeves. The locating pins must slide into the sleeves easily. Rotating the brake piston backwards Block the brake caliper against the brake disc. Use special tool 999 5782. * Turn the plate (A) forward over the shaft and insert the tool * Install the lugs (B) in the cut-out in the brake piston * Turn the shaft (C) so that the plate (A) presses against the brake caliper * Turn the axle (D) to the right and press the piston back while turning the shaft (C) to the right so that the plate (A) is in contact with the brake caliper * Turn the brake piston back fully and remove the tool Install the wear indicator (A) on the under side of the inner installed brake pads. Install the brake pads. Position the brake caliper . Install the new locking bolt. Tighten to 33 Nm . Install the brake hose in the support. Install the retaining clip. NOTE: Secure adhesive foil onto the steel plates to prevent the rear brake pads from rattling. Installing the wheels Install wheels. Checking the brake fluid level WARNING: Always depress the brake pedal repeatedly before test driving the car. Check the brake fluid level

Inspection 1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 2. Remove the rear wheels. 3. Check the thickness (A) of the inner pad (B) and the outer pad (C). Do not include the thickness of the backing plate. 4. If any part of the brake pad thickness is less than the service limit, replace the rear brake pads as a set. 5. Clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels Replacement 1. Remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder. 2. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 3. Remove the rear wheels. 4. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A). 5. Remove the flange bolts (B) while holding respective caliper pin (C) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot, and remove the caliper (D). Check the hose and pin boots for damage and deterioration. NOTE: Do not twist the brake hose and the parking brake cable to prevent damage. 6. Remove the pad shims (A) and the brake pads (B). 7. Remove the pad retainers (A). 8. Clean the caliper bracket (B) thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks. Verify that the caliper pins (C) move in and out smoothly. Clean and lube if needed. 9. Inspect the brake disc for runout, thickness, parallelism and check for damage and cracks. 10. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the retainer mating surface of the caliper bracket (indicated by the arrows). 11. Install the pad retainers. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Keep the assembly paste off the brake disc and brake pads. 12. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the pad side of the shims (A), the back of the brake pads (B), and the other areas indicated by the arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the pad shims and the brake pads friction material. Keep grease and assembly paste off the brake disc and the brake pads. Contaminated brake disc or brake pads reduce stopping ability. 13. Install the brake pads and the pad shims correctly. Install the brake pad with the wear indicator (C) on the bottom inside. If you are reusing the brake pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency

DISC BRAKE SHOES Removal (Front) 1. Remove master cylinder fluid reservoir cap. 2. Raise and support vehicle. 3. Remove tire and wheel assembly. 4. Place appropriately sized C-clamp over brake caliper, placing screw-drive head against outboard shoe and hook against rear of caliper. Slowly tighten screw-drive retracting caliper pistons into bores and brake outboard brake shoe free from caliper fingers. See Fig. 22 . Remove C-clamp. 5. Once outboard shoe is free from caliper fingers, slide caliper inboard on guides providing clearance between the rotor and inboard brake shoe. 6. Slide an appropriate prying tool through center opening in top of caliper behind brake shoe between 2 caliper pistons. Use care not to come in contact with pistons or dust boots potentially damaging them. Pry against rear of inboard brake shoe braking it free from caliper pistons. 7. Remove the 2 brake caliper guide pin bolts. See Fig. 23 . 8. Remove disc brake caliper from brake adapter and hang out of way using wire or a bungee cord. Use care not to overextend brake hose when doing this. 9. Remove brake shoes from disc brake caliper adapter. See Fig. 27 . 10. Install master cylinder fluid reservoir cap. 2. Install disc brake caliper over brake shoes on brake caliper adapter. See CALIPER . 3. Align guide pin bolt holes with guide pins and install caliper guide pin bolts. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 4. Install tire and wheel assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 5. Lower vehicle. 6. Pump brake pedal several times to seat shoes to caliper and brake rotor. 7. Check and fill brake fluid level as necessary. See CHECKING & FILLING under BRAKE FLUID in SERVICE. 8. Road test vehicle making several stops to wear off any foreign material on brakes and to seat brake shoes. Removal (Rear) 1. Raise and support vehicle. 2. Remove both rear tire assemblies from vehicle. 3. Remove 2 caliper guide pin bolts. 4. Remove the 2 caliper guide pin bolts. See Fig. 24 . 5. Remove caliper from caliper adapter. See CALIPER . 6. Remove outboard brake shoe by pushing shoe away from caliper fingers, dislocating locating pins built into shoe backing plate from holes in caliper fingers, then sliding brake shoe down and off of brake caliper. See Fig. 28 . 7. Pull inboard brake shoe away from caliper piston, dislocating retaining clip from cavity in piston. Remove inboard shoe. NOTE: In some cases, it may be necessary to retract caliper piston in its bore a small amount in order to provide sufficient clearance between shoes and rotor to easily remove caliper from knuckle. This can usually be accomplished before guide pin bolts are removed, but grasping rear of caliper and pulling outward working with guide pins, thus retracting piston. DO NOT push on piston directly as it may get damaged.

OVERHAUL HINT: Overhaul the RH side by the same procedures with LH side. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 1. DRAIN BRAKE FLUID NOTICE: Wash off the brake fluid immediately if it comes into contact with a painted surface. 2. DISCONNECT FRONT FLEXIBLE HOSE 3. Remove the union bolt and a gasket from the disc brake cylinder, then disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake cylinder. a. REMOVE DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSY FR LH 4. Remove the 2 bolts and disc brake cylinder. a. REMOVE DISC BRAKE PAD KIT FRONT (PAD ONLY) 5. Remove the 2 brake pads with anti-squeal shim. a. 6. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of 2 brake pads . a. Using a screwdriver, remove the wear indicator from each of 2 brake pads . b. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PAD SUPPORT PLATE 7. Remove the upper side front disc brake pad support plate. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PAD SUPPORT PLATE 8. Remove the bottom side front disc brake pad support plate. a. 10. Remove the cylinder slide bush from the cylinder slide pin. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE BUSH DUST BOOT 11. Remove the 2 bush dust boots from the disc brake cylinder mounting. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE CYLINDER MOUNTING LH 12. Remove the 2 bolts and disc brake cylinder mounting LH. a. 13. Using a screwdriver, remove the set ring and cylinder boot. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE PISTON 14. Place a piece of cloth or similar, between the piston and the disc brake cylinder. a. Use compressed air to remove the piston from the disc brake cylinder. CAUTION: Do not place your fingers in front of the piston when using compressed air. NOTICE: Do not spatter the brake fluid . b. 2004 Toyota Camry L4-2.4L (2AZ-FE) REMOVE PISTON SEAL 15. Using a screwdriver, remove the piston seal from the disc brake cylinder. NOTICE: Do not damage the inner cylinder and the cylinder groove. a. REMOVE FRONT DISC BRAKE BLEEDER PLUG CAP 16. Tighten Tighten the bracket mounting bolt to 12 N?m (106 lb in). Connect the vent valve pipe to the EVAP canister. • Install the two vent valve pipe clips into the existing underbody holes. • Connect the EVAP canister vent valve electrical connector, if equipped. • Attach bulk 5/8″ heater hose to the vent valve port and secure using a clamp. Run a length as needed along the frame rail routing to the area above the transmission. • Cut the hose to determined length and install the supplied filter box. Secure using a clamp. • Remove the transmission support and lower the transmission assembly as necessary to allow for access to the new filter box location using a tie strap. DO NOT pinch or restrict the transmission vent hose. The filter box opening should be pointing downward. • Raise the transmission and reinstall the transmission support. • Tie strap the hose as needed along the frame rail in order to keep the hose away from pinch*points and heat sources. • Lower the vehicle. • 2004-2007 Model Year (Use Service Kit P/N 19152349) Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. • Disconnect the EVAP canister vent valve electrical connector. • Disconnect the canister pipe from the vent valve. • Push in the retainer and remove the existing canister vent valve from the fuel tank clip or mounting bracket. Discard the old valve. • Cut back the existing canister pipe approximately 51 mm (2 in) to remove the quick connect end. Install the hose between the vent valve and the canister pipe and secure using clamps. • Attach bulk 5/8″ heater hose to the vent valve port and secure using a clamp. Run a length as needed along the frame rail routing to the area above the transmission. • Cut the hose to determined length and install the supplied filter box. Secure using a clamp. •

Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the LH front wheel/tire assembly. 4. Remove the LH lower splash shield. 5. Remove the lower radiator air deflector (engine splash shield, if installed.

Non-Enhanced EVAP System Diagnostic Procedure 1. Pinch off or plug the EVAP vapor line to seal the EVAP system. 2. Connect the EEST red battery clip to the positive (+) battery terminal. Connect the black battery clip to chassis ground. 3. Install the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter to the fuel fill pipe. Refer to the Service Information for the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter part number. 4. Connect the EEST’s nitrogen/smoke supply hose and vehicle fuel fill cap to the adapter. 5. Turn the nitrogen/smoke valve on the EEST control panel to SMOKE. 6. Use the remote switch to introduce smoke into the EVAP system for 60 seconds. Important: Additional smoke may need to be introduced at 15-second intervals until the leak source has been located. 7. Inspect the entire EVAP system for exiting smoke using the high intensity white light (J 41413-SPT). Enhanced EVAP System Leak Detection Procedure When diagnosing DTCs P0440, P0442, P0446 and P0455, use the J 41413-200 EEST along with 1. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. 2. Command the EVAP vent valve closed with a scan tool.* *Prizm: In order to seal the EVAP system on the 1998-2002 Prizm, bypass the EVAP canister by connecting the fuel tank vapor hose to the canister purge line. Refer to the Service Information for additional information. 3. Connect the EEST red battery clip to the positive (+) battery terminal. Connect the black battery clip to chassis ground. 4. Install the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter to the fuel fill pipe. Refer to the Service Information for the appropriate fuel fill cap adapter part number. 5. Connect the EEST’s nitrogen/smoke supply hose and vehicle fuel fill cap to the adapter. 6. Turn the nitrogen/smoke valve on the EEST control panel to SMOKE. 7. Use the remote switch to introduce smoke into the EVAP system. 8. Use the J 41413-VLV EVAP Port Vent Fitting tool to open the EVAP service port (if equipped) until smoke is observed. 9. Remove the J 41413-VLV EVAP Port Vent Fitting tool once smoke is observed. Important: Additional smoke may need to be introduced at 15-second intervals until the leak source has been located.
