Disconnect the battery. 2. Drain radiator coolant. Drain plug will normally be located on lower right or left side of the radiator facing the engine. 3. Remove radiator and air conditioning condenser if so equipped. In some cases, the front grill may have to be removed. Measure distance from front cover to grill or brackets that may interfere with camshaft against the length of the camshaft. 4. Remove the gas cap to relieve pressure. Disconnect fuel line and plug. Replace gas cap. 5. Disconnect all linkage from carburetor such as throttle, throttle springs, transmission, cruise control and automatic choke. 6. Tag and remove coil wires and sensor wires. 7. Tag and remove vacuum lines. 8. Remove valve covers. 9. Remove distributor cap and wires, rotate engine until rotor points towards number 1 terminal in cap and pointer on front cover is on top dead center (TDC) and remove distributor. (see Fig. 1) Note: Mark the approximate position of the distributor housing in relation to the manifold to assist in getting the distributor properly located during re-installation. 10. Remove carburetor and intake manifold. Remove and discard intake manifold gasket. 11. Remove rocker arms and pushrods. CAUTION: If your engine has non-adjustable rocker arms (1969-1/2 or later), you must install screw-in studs and high performance •VALVE SPRINGS CAUTION: WARNINGS ABOUT YOUR WARRANTY In order for this Performer RPM roller cam to be covered under ANY WARRANTY, you MUST use the correct Valve Springs. Failure to install the correct valve springs may cause lifters not to follow the cam lobes and damage engine parts. This camshaft is designed to function with valve springs that have a closed pressure of 110 lbs, open pressure of 320 lbs and a lift of .575″. Special H.P. retainers may be necessary with your installation for proper spring height. Do not use rotator type valve springs or retainers for this application. Note: Edelbrock Sure Seat Valve Springs #5762 are not recommended.  IMPORTANT NOTES AFFECTING YOUR WARRANTY CAM LOBE DAMAGE – Cam lobe wear is almost non-existent unless mismatched parts are used or installation of the cam and lifters is done improperly. Cam damage can result from the timing gear loosening due to improper torque on bolts. Bolts holding gear to camshaft should be torqued carefully and a locking compound applied to threads of bolts. Before installing your new Performer-RPM roller camshaft, check the gear drive on the distributor and oil pump for any signs of wear. If worn, be sure to replace with a new gear or you may wear out your camshaft prematurely. High-pressure oil pumps are not recommended with Performer RPM roller camshafts. Edelbrock camshafts are designed to use with Edelbrock timing chains.  CAM GEARS AND CAMSHAFT END PLAY- If cam gear becomes loose, the cam will slide back in the block, causing the lifters to hit the lobes next to them and also the cam bearing journals. If the engine is run after this happens, the bottom of the lifters and the sides of the lobes will become damaged. See Installation Instructions section for end play specifications.  LIFTERS Edelbrock offers a retrofit roller lifter kit for engines not originally equipped with roller lifters. Use part #97453. To install your roller lifters, use fresh clean oil on the lifter and the lifter bore just prior to installing. The guide bar (high side of tappet) must face the opposite side of block. See roller lifter instructions for additional information. ( Note: 289-302 engines require removal of the cylinder heads to provide enough clearance to install roller lifters, which are taller than standard hydraulic lifters.)  PUSHRODS AND ROCKER ARMS High performance pushrods, roller rocker arms and rocker studs are recommended for this installation. After the cam is installed and timed correctly (see Figure 2), it will be necessary to check each pushrod for correct lifter preload. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Check lifters as covered in Lifters section. Coat cam lobes with fresh clean oil. Lube distributor drive of cam with assembly lube (supplied). 2. Install new camshaft. Re-install thrust plate with new sprockets and timing chain with timing marks lined up as recommended by factory specifications (See Figure 2). Reinstall the fuel pump eccentric before installing sprocket bolt and washer

1. Remove stock timing cover. Rotate engine to Top Dead Center of cylinder #1 so that the timing marks on the original crank and cam sprockets are directly lined up with each other, i.e. the mark on the crank sprocket will be straight up and the mark on the cam sprocket will be straight down. Using suitable gear puller, remove stock crank and camshaft sprockets and timing chain. Refer to repair manual if necessary for individual steps. 2. Assemble Accu-Drive as shown in Figure 1. 3. Install crank gear with the large inside chamfer toward rear of engine and timing mark toward front of engine. Make certain crankshaft drive key is aligned with keyway of the crank gear before assembling. 4. See Figure 2 “Camshaft Gear Assembly”for correct assembly. (a) Place well-lubricated thrust washer on the rear (block) side of cam gear. (b) The Edelbrock Accu-Drive system is furnished with an 0.032″ thick thrust ring that installs between the back side of the cam gear and the front side of the camshaft thrust plate. Torque the thrust plate retaining capscrews to 9-12 ft./lbs. NOTE: No thrust button is used on Ford engines. (c) Select the desired keyway in the crank gear “0″ (standard), “A” (4ºadvanced at the crank, 2º at the cam), or “R” Place a small amount of clay on the front end of both axles as shown in Figure 3. NOTE: It will be necessary to cut material off rib inside front cover to hold idler gears in place. (b) Install front cover with gasket in place. (c) Remove cover and measure the thickness of the compressed clay. It should be .005″-.030″. Do not tighten cover down until proper clearance has been obtained. Without sufficient clearance, there is risk of cracking the cover when tightened down. (d) If clearance is less than .005, you will need to grind off idler axle as shown to obtain proper clearance. If clearance is greater than .090, replace left side (larger idler side) stud with tapered end axle provided in the kit. Re-install idler assembly and recheck for minimum clearance between block and front cover. 8. With all gears correctly in mesh and timed, tighten the camshaft capscrew to 35 ft./lbs. It would also be a good idea to use Locktite™ or equivalent on the bolt threads prior to final assembly. 9. Lubricate all gears and bearings with engine oil. 10. Re-install the front cover. 11. Re-install all components removed in preparation for step 1

Removal 1. Remove radiator shroud, cooling fan and pulley. Remove all drive belts and crankshaft pulleys. Remove upper timing belt covers and gaskets. Note bolt length and location. 2. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt and washer. Rotate crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with mark on cylinder head. See Fig. 5 . 3. Loosen timing belt tensioner adjustment bolt, and move tensioner toward water pump. Tighten bolt to secure tensioner. Remove front timing belt and tensioner. DO NOT rotate crankshaft after timing belt has been removed. 4. Remove camshaft sprocket (if necessary). Remove oil pump sprocket access plug from cylinder block. See Fig. 4 . Insert a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver to block left silent shaft. 5. Remove oil pump sprocket nut, and remove sprocket. Remove front crankshaft sprocket and flange. Note direction and order of installation for reassembly reference. 6. Remove rear timing belt tensioner assembly. Remove rear timing belt. Remove right silent shaft sprocket with spacer (if necessary). Remove rear crankshaft sprocket with key Installation 1. Install rear crankshaft sprocket and flange. Install right silent shaft sprocket and spacer. Spacer should be installed with chamfered end into oil seal. Align timing marks. See Fig. 5 . 2. Install rear tensioner. Hold tensioner tightly against belt while tightening bolts. Ensure deflection is .20- .28″ (5.0-7.1 mm). See Fig. 6 . Install camshaft sprocket. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 3. Install front timing belt tensioner, tension spring and spacer. Ensure spring is properly engaged against water pump case. Rotate tensioner toward water pump, and temporarily tighten bolts. Ensure timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 5 . Install timing belt on crankshaft. 4. Apply pressure on tension side of timing belt while installing belt (in order) on crankshaft, oil pump and camshaft sprockets. Loosen tensioner to apply spring pressure to timing belt. 5. To apply tension to belt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing mark is offset by 2 teeth. Tighten tensioner bolt. Tighten tensioner spacer nut

REMOVAL 1.Remove upper intake manifold. 2.Remove cylinder head covers, crankshaft damper, and timing chain cover. CAUTION: When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage. Fig. 70 3.Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to mark on oil pump housing (Fig. 70). The mark on oil pump housing is 60° ATDC of #1 cylinder. CAUTION: When the timing chain is removed and the cylinder heads are still installed, DO NOT rotate the camshafts or crankshaft without first locating the proper crankshaft position. Failure to do so will result in valve and/or piston damage Fig. 74 4.Remove primary timing chain tensioner from right cylinder head (Fig. 74). 5.Remove camshaft position sensor from left cylinder head (Fig. 69). 6.Remove chain guide access plug from left cylinder head (Fig. 69). NOTE: When camshaft sprocket bolts are removed, the camshafts will rotate in a clockwise direction. 7.Starting with the right camshaft sprocket, remove the sprocket attaching bolts. Remove camshaft damper and sprocket (Fig. 69). 8.Remove left side camshaft sprocket attaching bolts and remove sprocket (Fig. 69). 9.Remove lower chain guide and tensioner arm (Fig. 69). 10.Remove the primary timing chain. INSTALLATION 1.Inspect all sprockets and chain guides. Replace if worn. Refer to Crankshaft Gear/Sprocket, for removal and installation procedures. 2.If removed, install right and left side short chain guides (Fig. 69). Tighten attaching bolts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) 3.Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to the mark on oil pump housing (Fig. 71). NOTE: Lubricate timing chain and guides with engine oil before installation. 4.Place left side primary chain sprocket onto the chain so that the timing mark is located in-between the two (plated) timing links (Fig. 71). 5.Lower the primary chain with left side sprocket through the left cylinder head opening

Wheel Hub Removal All vehicles 1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 . 2. NOTE: Caliper is removed for clarity. Position aside the front disc brake caliper and anchor plate (2B292). 1. Remove the two front disc brake caliper anchor plate bolts. 2. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate and position aside. 3. NOTE: Carry out this step for F-250 and F-350 4×4 SRW vehicles. Remove the rotor. 4. NOTE: Carry out this step for DRW vehicles. NOTE: If excessive force must be used during brake rotor removal, the brake rotors should be checked for lateral runout prior to installation. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00 . Remove the eight hub extender nuts, the hub plate and the rotor. 1. Remove the eight hub plate nuts. 2. Remove the hub plate. 3. Remove the rotor. 5. Remove the hub lock. 1. Remove the retainer ring. 2. Pull outward and remove the hub lock. 6. Remove the axle shaft thrust washers. 1. Remove the snap ring. 2. Remove the three thrust washers. Vehicles equipped with ABS 7. sensor from the bearing. Disconnect the ABS wheel sensor harness. 1. Disconnect the connector. 2. Disconnect the harness routing clips. All vehicles 8. NOTE: The wheel hub and bearing is a slip fit design and should not require a puller to remove it. Remove the wheel hub and bearing. 1. Remove the four lock nuts. 2. Remove the wheel hub and bearing 9. If necessary, remove the brake disc shield. Vehicles with ABS 10. If necessary, remove the bolt and the ABS sensor. All vehicles 11. NOTE: If necessary, position the hub in a soft-jawed vise. Install two nuts on the studs and use the inner nut to remove the studs. 12. Remove and discard the O-ring. Installation All vehicles 1. NOTE: Any time the wheel hub is removed for any reason, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of four wheel drive operations. Install a new O-ring. 2. NOTE: Position the hub in a soft-jawed vise. Install two nuts on the studs and use the outer nut to install the studs. Vehicles equipped with ABS 3. Position the ABS sensor and install the bolt. All vehicles 4. Position the brake disc shield. 5. NOTE: Apply a coat of Ford High Temperature 4×4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease E8TZ-19590-A meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C198-A to the O-ring area of the wheel hub and bearing before installing the hub and bearing. Install the wheel hub and bearing. 1. Position the wheel hub and bearing. 2. Install the four lock nuts. Vehicle equipped with ABS 6. NOTE: The following step applies only to vehicles equipped with ABS. Connect the ABS sensor harness. 1. Position the ABS sensor harness and install the routing clips. 2. Connect the harness connector. All vehicles 7. n-metallic thrust washer must be installed between the two metal thrust washers. Failure to do so will cause severe wear to the non-metallic thrust washer, allowing the axle shaft to travel further in and out during torque thrust causing damage to the wheel hub and bearing, the axle shaft end seal and the axle shaft. Install the snap ring. 1. Position the three thrust washers onto the axle shaft. 2. Install the snap ring. 8. NOTE: Any time the hub lock is removed, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of four wheel drive functions. Install a new O-ring. 9. Install the hub lock. 1. Position the hub lock. 2. Install the retainer ring. 10. Position the front disc brake rotor (1125) to the wheel hub (1104). Make sure the wheel hub and the front disc brake rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean. ? Use brake parts cleaner to clean the front disc brake rotor. 11. NOTE: Carry out this step for DRW vehicles only. Install the front wheel hub extender and nuts.

3.Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks so as to bring the No.1 cylinder to compression top-dead-center position. At this time the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and the upper surface of the rocker cover should coincide, and the dowel pin of the camshaft sprocket should be at the upper side. Remove the auto tensioner. CAUTION: Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. 4.Remove the timing belt. NOTE: If the timing belt is reused, make an arrow mark indicating the turning direction (or the front of the engine) to make sure that the belt is reinstalled in the same direction as before 6.When the oil pump sprocket nut is removed, first remove the plug at left side of the cylinder block and insert a screwdriver to check the left counter balance shaft in position. Screwdriver used for this purpose should have a shaft 8 mm (0.3 inch) in diameter which can be inserted more than 60 mm (2.36 inch) 7.Remove the oil pump sprocket retaining nut and remove the oil pump sprocket. 8.Loosen the right counter balance shaft sprocket mounting bolt until it can be loosened by hand. 9.Next, remove tensioner “B” and remove timing belt “B”. CAUTION: After timing belt “B” has been removed, do not attempt to loosen bolt while holding sprocket with pliers, etc. 10.Remove the crankshaft sprocket “B” from crankshaft. INSPECTION Sprockets, Tensioner Pulley, and Idler Pulley 1.Check the camshaft sprocket, crankshaft sprocket, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley for abnormal wear, cracks, or damage. Replace as necessary. 2.Inspect the tensioner pulley and the idler pulley for easy and smooth pulley rotation and check for play or noise. Replace as necessary. 3.Replace if there is grease leak

Installation Instructions 1. Clean everything! Make sure that the engine mounting surfaces and your new timing set have been thoroughly cleaned with a good solvent. 2. If you are using a timing set with three keyways, select the appropriate keyway for your camshaft timing specifications. COMP Cams ® recommends the standard timing position for most applications. This position uses the round or “O” timing and keyway marks. Standard Timing Location: This is the same as original O.E.M. setting. Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked “O”. É 4 Degree Advance: Use keyway and crankshaft tooth marked . Note: The or advanced position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many camshafts have the proper advance built in. Advancing the cam will reduce intake valve to piston clearance and increase exhaust piston to valve clearance. É 4 Degree Retard: Use keyway and crankshaft gear tooth marked . Note: The or retarded position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many cams have the proper advance built in. Retarding the cam will reduce exhaust valve to piston clearance and increase intake piston to valve clearance. 3. Install your lower timing gear on the crankshaft making sure that the timing marks are facing out toward you. 4. Now that the lower timing gear has been installed check the timing mark alignment in your engine manual. Rotate the crankshaft using your crankshaft socket until the timing mark on the gear is in the proper position (12 o’clock). For 240-300 6 cyl. see Note 1 before proceeding! 5. If your engine is equipped with a camshaft retaining plate or thrust plate, it should be installed at this time. Note that many Ford thrust plates are marked “back – bottom”. Before final installation check to make sure that the thrust plate is fitted correctly. 351W owners see Note 2 before proceeding! 6. Removal Both cylinder heads 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information , refer to Section 100-02 . 2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . 3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 4. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section. 5. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 6. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section 303-05 7. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — LH in this section. 8. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — RH in this section. 9. Disconnect the generator electrical connections. 10. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. 11. Remove the bolts and the generator and generator mounting bracket as an assembly. 12. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. 13. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers. 14. Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors. 15. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube fitting. 16. Remove the upper heater coolant hose. 1. Squeeze the heater hose clamp. 2. Remove the heater coolant hose. 17. Remove the lower heater coolant hose and position aside. 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Squeeze the hose clamp. 3. Remove the heater coolant hose and position aside. 18. NOTE: The coolant hose will be removed with the thermostat housing. Move the coolant bypass hose clamp off the water pump outlet. 19. Remove the bolts, the thermostat housing and the bypass hose. 20. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness retainer. 21. Remove the bolts and position the accessory drive bracket aside.22. Detach the wiring harness retainer. 23. Remove the bolt and the oil level indicator tube. 24. Using the special tool, disconnect the LH spark plug wires from the spark plugs. 25. Disconnect the fuel pulse damper vacuum connector. 26. Remove the four bolts and position the fuel supply tube aside. 27. Remove the bolts and the fuel rail and injectors as an assembly.28. NOTE: Mark each of the roller followers to make sure it is installed in its original position during reassembly. Use the special tool to remove the roller followers. 29. Remove the lower radiator hose. 30. Remove the nut and position the A/C tube bracket aside. 31. Using the special tool, set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). RH cylinder head 32. Remove the RH fenderwell splash shield. 33. Remove the RH camshaft chain tensioner.

Installation instructions: 1.) Raise and support vehicle. 2.) Lubricate all factory rubber hangers and pipe slip-connectors with penetrating oil. 3.) Loosen clamp, attaching inlet of stock muffler to inlet pipe. 4.) Remove muffler/tailpipe assembly from inlet pipe and rubber hangers; remove from vehicle. Removal of muffler/tailpipe can be made easier by first cutting the tailpipe from the muffler with a reciprocating saw. 5.) Remove hanger rod on inlet pipe from rubber frame hanger. 6.) Loosen clamp attaching inlet pipe to outlet of converter and remove pipe from vehicle. 7.) Place supplied 3.5? clamp with hole over small end of supplied adapter and install onto outlet of converter. Engage slot in adapter with index bump on converter outlet and place hole in clamp over bump. Tighten clamp fully. 8.) Place one supplied 4? clamp over inlet pipe slip-connector and install pipe onto adapter. Insert hanger rod on pipe into corresponding rubber hanger on frame. 9.) Rotate inlet pipe as needed to orient end of hanger rod, which is inserted into rubber hanger, in a horizontal position and tighten clamp at slip-connector fully 10.) Place one supplied 4? clamp over muffler inlet and install muffler onto inlet pipe. 11.) Place one supplied 4? clamp over inlet of tailpipe section “A” and install pipe onto muffler and into corresponding factory rubber hangers just above muffler. 12.) Place one supplied 4? clamp over inlet of tailpipe section “B” and install pipe into rear-most rubber frame hanger and onto outlet of tailpipe section “A”. 13.) Place remaining 4? clamp over tip inlet and install tip onto outlet of tailpipe section “B”. 14.) Align all components for desired fit and tighten all clamps fully
