Remove the drive belt (Fig. 3). Clean all foreign debris from belt pulley grooves. The belt pulleys must be free of oil, grease, and coolants before installing the drive belt. INSPECTION Belt replacement under any or all of the following conditions is required: ^Excessive wear ^Frayed cords ^Severe glazing Poly-V Belt system may develop minor cracks across the ribbed side (due to reverse bending). These minor cracks are considered normal and acceptable. Parallel cracks are not (Fig. 6). NOTE: Do not use any type of belt dressing or restorer on Poly-V Belts. INSTALLATION NOTE: When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves. INSPECTION When inspecting serpentine drive belts, small cracks that run across the ribbed surface of the belt from rib to rib are considered normal. If the the cracks are running along the rib (rather across), this is not normal and the belt(s) must be replaced. ADJUSTMENT It is not necessary to adjust belt tension on the 5.2L or 5.9L engines and on the 2.5L and 4.0L engines (without power steering). These engines are equipped with an automatic tensioner. The tensioner maintains correct tension at all times. 2.5L and 4.0L Engines With Power Steering See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 If the vehicle is not equipped with power steering, it will be equipped with an idler pulley. If equipped with an idler pulley, refer to and follow the 5.2L/5.9L belt removal and installation procedure. Loosen the pump upper pivot bolt, lower locknut and pump adjusting bolt using a ratchet and 13mm socket or a 13mm box wrench. 1. Use a belt tension gauge placed in the middle of the belt being tested. Proper tension for a new belt is 180-200 lbs. (800-900 N) and 140-160 lbs. (623-712 N) for a used belt. 2. Tighten the pump adjusting bolt to achieve proper tension and recheck the belt tension. 3. Fig. Fig. 1: Loosen the pivot bolt (1), then the locking bolt (2) to loosen the power steering pump from behind Fig. Fig. 2: Use a ratchet and 13mm size socket to rotate the power steering pump Fig. Fig. 3: Adjustment points on the 2.5L engines without power steering (rear view) Fig. Fig. 4: Adjustment points on the 2.5L engine (front view) Removal & Installation 2.5L and 4.0L Engines With Power Steering See Figures 5, 6 and 7 Fig. Fig. 5: Proper belt routing diagram can usually be found on a sticker located in the engine compartment Fig. Fig. 6: Common 4.0L engine serpentine belt routing Fig. Fig. 7: Common 2.5L engine serpentine belt routing Loosen the rear power steering pump mounting bolts using a ratchet and 13mm socket or a 13mm box wrench. 1. Loosen the pump upper pivot bolt, lower locknut and the pump adjusting bolt using a ratchet and 13mm socket or a 13mm box wrench. 2. Remove the belt. 3. To install: Install the belt. 4. Tighten the pump adjusting bolt to achieve proper tension. 5. Install the pump rear mounting bolts, pivot bolt and locknut. Tighten the bolts to 20. ft. lbs. (27 Nm). 6. Check the belt for proper tension. If tension is incorrect, refer to the adjustment procedure in this section. 7. 5.2L and 5.9L Engines See Figures 8, 9 and 10

Inspect the power steering reservoir. Does one of the 3 ribs on the reservoir cover point toward the reservoir holder? Yes – This vehicle already has the revised power steering reservoir. Continue with normal troubleshooting procedures. No – Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Drain the power steering reservoir: •Remove the reservoir from its holder. •Raise the reservoir, and disconnect its return hose. •Drain the reservoir fluid into a suitable container. Take care not to spill any fluid on the body or other parts. Wipe off any spilled fluid immediately. 2. Drain the fluid from the power steering system: •Connect a suitable diameter drain hose to the disconnected return hose. •Hold the end of the drain hose in a suitable container. •Start the engine, and run it at idle while you turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. •When the fluid stops running out of the hose, shut off the engine. •Discard the used fluid. 3. Reinstall the return hose to the reservoir, then reattach the reservoir to its holder. Fill the reservoir to its upper level line with new power steering fluid. 4. Bleed the air from the power steering system: •Start the engine. •With the engine at a fast idle, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. 5. Check the condition of the fluid in the reservoir: •If the fluid looks contaminated, dark, or discolored, repeat steps 1 thru 5. •If the fluid is clear, go to step 6. 6. Place a suitable container under the vehicle to catch any fluid 7. Replace the power steering fluid reservoir: •Remove the reservoir from its holder. •Disconnect the return hose from the reservoir, and pour the fluid from the reservoir into a container. •Disconnect the outlet hose from the reservoir, and remove the reservoir. •Install a new reservoir in the reverse order of removal. •Fill the reservoir to its upper level line with new power steering fluid. 8. Start the engine, and run it at a fast idle. Turn the steering from lock-to-lock several times to bleed any air from the system. 9. Recheck the fluid level in the reservoir, and add more if needed. Do not fill the reservoir beyond its upper level line.
