Transmission Repair 1. Remove the transmission. Refer to the appropriate SI procedure. 2. Disassemble and inspect the transmission. Refer to Unit Repair Automatic Transmission – 4L60-E/4L65-E. Important: Subject: 4L60-E Automatic Transmission/Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder, Water in Transmission (Repair Transmission and Replace Transmission Filler Tube, Level Indicator and Seal) Models: 2004-2005 Buick Rainier 2003-2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Models 2003-2005 GMC Envoy Models 2003-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada 2005 Saab 9-7X with 4.2L In-Line 6 Cylinder Engine (VIN S — RPO LL8) • Visible rust on the transmission fluid level indicator. • Visible water in the oil pan. • A milky white substance inside the pan area. • Spacer plate gaskets that appear to be glued to the spacer plate, valve body or case. • Rust on internal transmission iron/steel components. • Remove the surge tank cap and examine the coolant for signs of contamination with transmission fluid (the coolant will have a milky, not clear appearance). • If the coolant has a normal, clear appearance, the radiator should not be replaced. • The cooler can also be tested by following the Coolant System Leak Test procedure (SI Document ID# 877442). Do NOT replace a radiator without verifying that the transmission oil cooler is leaking. If water or coolant is found in the transmission, the following components MUST be replaced. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator WITH the transmission REMOVED from vehicle. 1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube from the transmission. 2. Replace the transmission fill tube seal, P/N 1259475. 3. Replace the transmission fill tube, P/N 15000220, following the appropriate SI Document for Transmission Installation. 4. Replace the transmission fluid level indicator, P/N 15069769 when appropriate during the transmission installation. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator with the transmission in the vehicle. 1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement (SI Document ID# 1364496). 2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the filler tube. 3. Remove the filler tube nut (2) located on the right side of the engine. 4. Remove the filler tube from the vehicle. Tip It is necessary to remove the two A/C line (suction line / low side of muffler hose) retainers and reposition • Replace all of the rubber type seals. • Replace all of the composition-faced clutch plate assemblies including the band. • Replace all of the nylon parts (Thrust Washers). • Replace the torque converter. • Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter. • Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J 45096. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-07-30- 052C or newer – Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flush and Flow Test Essential Tool J 45096 TransFlow .
the A/C line to allow proper clearance for installation of the new transmission fluid fill tube. 5. Remove the A/C line at the oil level indicator tube bracket nut. 6. Remove the A/C bracket bolt from the engine lift hook. 7. Reposition the A/C line upward. 8. Install the new transmission filler tube, P/N 15000220, into position but NOT into the transmission at this time. 9. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI Document ID# 744862). 10. Remove the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 11. Remove the transmission heat shield from the transmission. 12. Remove the old filler tube seal from the transmission case. 13. Install a new seal, P/N 1259475 into the transmission case. 14. Position the new transmission filler tube into the transmission seal. 15. Install the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 16. Install the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft). 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Install the nut securing the filler tube to the stud. Tighten Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in). 19. Reposition the A/C line into place. 20. Install the A/C line bracket to the oil level indicator tube stud and secure the bracket with the nut. 21. Install the A/C line bracket to the engine lift bracket and secure the A/C bracket with the bolt

Checking fluid level and condition (color and odor) at regular intervals will provide early diagnosis information about the transmission. This information may be used to correct a condition that, if not detected early, could result
in major transmission repairs. IMPORTANT: When new, automatic transmission fluid is red in color. As the vehicle is driven, the transmission fluid will begin to look darker in color. The color may eventually appear light brown. A dark brown color with burnt odor may indicate excessive fluid deterioration and signal a need for fluid change. Fluid Level When adding or changing fluid, use only DEXRON ®-lll. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication in General
Information section for maintenance information and servicing interval. CAUTION: DO NOT OVERFILL. Overfilling will cause foaming, loss of fluid, abnor- mal shifting and possible damage to the transmis-sion. 1. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly. 2. Check fluid level with engine running at idle. NOTE: Be sure that transmission fluid temperature is below 30°C (86°F). 3. Move the selector lever through all gear ranges. 4. Move the selector lever to “Park”. 5. Let engine idle for 3 minutes and open the overfill screw (1). 6. Add released ransmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening. 7. Let engine idle until a fluid temperature etween 32° C (90°F) and 57°C (135°F) is reached, then close the overfill screw (1). Torque: 38 N*m (28 Ib ft) NOTE: Check transmission fluid temperature with scan tool.

Changing Transmission Fluid There is no need to change the transmission fluid unless the transmission is used under one or more of the following heavy duty conditions. A. Repeated short trips B. Driving on rough roads C. Driving on dusty roads D. Towing a trailer If the vehicle is used under these conditions, change the fluid every 20,000 miles (32,000 km). 1. Place a large drain pan under the oil pan. 2. Remove the transmission oil drain screw (2) and drain fluid. 3. Tighten drain screw (2). Torque: 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.) 4. Remove the transmission overfill screw (1) and fill transmission through overfill screw opening, using DEXRON-III ATF. Note: Add transmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening. 5. Let engine idle until a fluid temperature between 32°C (90°F) and 57°C (135°F) is reached. 6. Add transmission fluid until it flows out over the overfill screw opening, then close the overfill screw (1). Torque: 38 Nm (28 ft. lbs.) Note: To prevent fluid leaks, the overfill screw and oil drain screws gasket must be replaced each time these screws are removed. Note: Check transmission fluid temperature with scan tool

Removal Procedure 1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting. 2. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement- Front. 3. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Rear. 4. Remove the vent hose from the transfer case. 5. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connectors. 6. Remove the electrical connectors from the transfer case motor/encoder. 9. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt securing the left side support brace to the transmission. 10. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the bolt and stud securing the left side support brace to the transfer case 11. If equipped with a manual transmission, remove the two bolts securing the right side support brace to the transmission and transfer case. 12. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission 13. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 14. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, remove the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. 15. Remove the transfer case. * Start by pulling the transfer case straight back from the transmission. * After the transfer case is pulled out from the transmission turn and lower the transfer case. 16. Remove and discard the gasket. Installation Procedure 1. Install a new gasket to the transmission. Use sealer GM P/N 12346004 in order to hold the gasket in place. 2. Raise and position the transfer case to the vehicle Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. For vehicles equipped with a automatic transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission adapter. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft) . 4. For vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, install the six nuts securing the transfer case and bracket to the transmission. * Tighten the nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft)

SERVICE PROCEDURE Prior methods of cooler flushing have not obtained the level of cooler cleaning and contaminant removal that is required to prevent repeat repairs. The “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” uses heated Automatic Transmission Fluid ( ATF ) and a pulsating action to loosen system contamination. Previous equipment used solvents to clean & flush coolers, lines and torque- converters. There are 2 issues with this method: Aerosol Solvents should never be used for several reasons. NOTE YOU MUST IDENTIFY THE RETURN COOLER LINE TO START THE BACK FLUSHING PROCEDURE. A quick way to identify the return cooler line (fluid coming out of the cooler and returning to the transmission) is to locate the return cooler line fitting on the transmission case . Refer to the following lists: Rear Wheel Drive ^Residual solvent contamination can cause damage to friction bonding materials within the transmission (Clutches and Bands). ^Lack of fluid heating and agitation prevents this method from completely removing contamination from lines, in-radiator coolers and auxiliary coolers Front Wheel Drive NOTE IF AN IN-LINE FILTER HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN THE COOLER LINE, IT MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE FLUSHING THE COOLER OR COOLER LINES. Purge the cooler and cooler line before flushing: Located on the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” is a fluid transfer and purge valve. This valve can be used to purge the cooler and cooler lines of contaminated fluid before starting the back flush procedure of the fluid cooling system (refer to step 5a of this Service Procedure or Equipment instructions, supplied with the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher”). Flush Procedure -The TOP transmission case filling receives the return line. ^CD4E – The REAR or Pump End transaxle case fitting receives the return line. ^4F27E – The REAR or Cover End transaxle case fitting receives the return line. ^AXOD, AXODE, AX4S, AX4N, 4F50N – The BOTTOM transaxle cooler line fitting receives the return line. 1. Check and top off fluid level of the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” tank with transmission fluid. 2. Allow the fluid in the flusher 15-30 minutes to heat up to 140°F (60°C) before using. 3. Install line adapters into the transmission cooler lines. 4. Attach the flusher’s blue line to the transmission return cooler line quick disconnect. 5. Attach the flusher’s red line to the transmission outlet cooler line quick disconnect. a. Follow equipment instructions, to purge cooler lines and cooler prior to starting flushing procedure (using factory installed purge valve and clear hose on “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher”). 6. Allow the cooling system to back-flush for 10-15 minutes, then flush the cooler in a forward/normal flow direction for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Check and top off fluid level of the “Turbo-Tank Heated Cooler Line Flusher” tank with transmission fluid. 2. Allow the fluid in the flusher 15-30 minutes to heat up to 140°F (60°C) before using. 3. Install line adapters into the transmission cooler lines. 4. Attach the flusher’s blue line to the transmission return cooler line quick disconnect. 5. Attach the flusher’s red line to the transmission outlet cooler line quick disconnect. a. This step verifies that circuit 1222 is neither open nor shorted to power. 11. This step verifies that the 1-2 shift solenoid has neither shorted across its windings nor increased its resistance. DTC P0753 1-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit– Electrical Step Action Value(s) Yes No 1 Was the Powertrain On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check performed? — Go to Step 2 Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check 2 1. Install the Scan Tool . 2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. Important Before clearing the DTCs, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records for reference. The Clear Info function will erase the data. 3. Record the DTC Freeze Frame and Failure Records, then clear the DTC. — Go to Are DTCs P0758, P1860 or P0740 set? Step 3 Go to Step 6 3 1. Disconnect the Automatic Transmission 7-way connector. 3. Install the J 38835 Transmission Electrical Jumper on the engine harness connector. 4. Connect a test lamp from terminal E to terminal A of the jumper using a J 35616-A Connector Test Adapter Kit. Important Additional DTCs will set. 5. With the engine OFF, turn the ignition ON. Is the test lamp ON? — Go to Step 7 Go to Step 8 7 Inspect engine harness circuit 1222 for a short to ground. Refer to General Electrical Diagnosis Procedures . Was a condition found and corrected? — Go to Step 21 Go to Step 20 8 Using the scan tool command the 1-2 solenoid ON and OFF three times. Does the test lamp cycle ON and OFF as commanded? — Go to Step 11 Go to Step 9 9 Inspect engine harness circuit 1222 for an open. Refer to General Electrical Diagnosis Procedures . Was a condition found and corrected? — Go to Step 21 Go to Step 10 10 Inspect engine harness circuit 1222 for a short to power. Refer to General Electrical Diagnosis Procedures . Was a condition found and corrected? — Go to Step 21 Go to Step 19 11 1. Turn the ignition OFF. 2. Disconnect the J 38835 Transmission Electrical Jumper from the engine harness. 3. Connect the J 38835 Transmission Electrical Jumper to the Automatic Transmission 7-way connector. 4. Connect a J 39200 Digital Multimeter (DMM) from 19 ohms to 31 ohms terminal E to terminal A of the jumper. Is the measured resistance within the specified range? Refer to Solenoids and Wiring Harness Replacement . Is the replacement complete? — Go to Step 21 — 15 Connect the J 39200 Digital Multimeter from terminal A of the jumper to ground. Is the resistance less than the specified value? 100 ohms Go to Step 16 Go to Step 18 16 Inspect the transmission harness LT GRN wire circuit 1222 for a short to ground or short to power. Refer to General Electrical Diagnosis Procedures . Was a condition found? — Go to Step 17 Go to Step 18 17 Replace the Automatic Transmission Wiring Harness. Refer to Solenoids and Wiring Harness Replacement . Is the replacement complete? — Go to Step 21 — 18 Replace the 1-2 Shift Solenoid Valve Assembly. Refer to Solenoids and Wiring Harness Replacement . Is the replacement complete? — Go to Step 21 — 19 Inspect PCM connector C1 (Blue) for bent, damaged or backed out connector pins. Was a condition found and corrected? — Go to Step 21 Go to Step 20 20 Replace the PCM. Refer to PCM Replacement/Programming . Is the replacement complete? — Go to Step 21 — 21 In order to verify your repair, perform the following procedure: 1. Using the scan tool, clear DTCs. 2. Operate the vehicle under the following conditions: { The engine speed is more than 500 RPM. { The vehicle is not in fuel shut off. { System voltage is 10-16 volts. { Drive the vehicle through the 1-2 shift. { When the 1-2 SS Valve Assembly is commanded ON, the voltage decreases to zero. { When the 1-2 SS Valve Assembly is commanded OFF, the voltage increases to B+. { All conditions are met for 5 seconds.

Inspect the power steering reservoir. Does one of the 3 ribs on the reservoir cover point toward the reservoir holder? Yes – This vehicle already has the revised power steering reservoir. Continue with normal troubleshooting procedures. No – Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Drain the power steering reservoir: •Remove the reservoir from its holder. •Raise the reservoir, and disconnect its return hose. •Drain the reservoir fluid into a suitable container. Take care not to spill any fluid on the body or other parts. Wipe off any spilled fluid immediately. 2. Drain the fluid from the power steering system: •Connect a suitable diameter drain hose to the disconnected return hose. •Hold the end of the drain hose in a suitable container. •Start the engine, and run it at idle while you turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. •When the fluid stops running out of the hose, shut off the engine. •Discard the used fluid. 3. Reinstall the return hose to the reservoir, then reattach the reservoir to its holder. Fill the reservoir to its upper level line with new power steering fluid. 4. Bleed the air from the power steering system: •Start the engine. •With the engine at a fast idle, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. 5. Check the condition of the fluid in the reservoir: •If the fluid looks contaminated, dark, or discolored, repeat steps 1 thru 5. •If the fluid is clear, go to step 6. 6. Place a suitable container under the vehicle to catch any fluid 7. Replace the power steering fluid reservoir: •Remove the reservoir from its holder. •Disconnect the return hose from the reservoir, and pour the fluid from the reservoir into a container. •Disconnect the outlet hose from the reservoir, and remove the reservoir. •Install a new reservoir in the reverse order of removal. •Fill the reservoir to its upper level line with new power steering fluid. 8. Start the engine, and run it at a fast idle. Turn the steering from lock-to-lock several times to bleed any air from the system. 9. Recheck the fluid level in the reservoir, and add more if needed. Do not fill the reservoir beyond its upper level line.
