1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 . 3. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 4. Remove the hood (16612). 5. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (9B659). For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 . 6. Remove the accelerator control splash shield (9E766). 7. Remove the upper radiator hose (8260). 8. Remove the lower radiator hose (8286). 9. Remove the two bolts and position the fan shroud (8146) on the fan blade (8600). 10. Remove the water pump pulley, fan and shroud; refer to Section 303-03 . 11. Disconnect the radiator overflow tube. 2. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, disconnect the transmission cooler lines. 13. Disconnect the mass air flow sensor. 14. Disconnect the heater water hoses (18472) at the inlet and outlet; refer to Section 303-03 . 15. Disconnect the power connection from the generator (10346). 16. Disconnect the vacuum connection to the vacuum reservoir. 17. Disconnect the throttle body heater hose. 18. Disconnect the A/C cycling switch. 19. Disconnect the connector from the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650). 20. Remove the nut. 21. Remove the ground wire stud from the powertrain control module. 22. Recover the A/C system; refer to Section 412-00 . 23. Disconnect the power steering cut-out switch. 24. Disconnect the peanut fitting from the A/C condenser core (19712). 25. Disconnect the A/C high pressure cut-out switch. 26. Disconnect the A/C manifold hose. 27. Remove the nut. 28. Disconnect the accelerator cable (9A758) and the speed control cable. 29. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose and vacuum tube at the upper intake manifold assembly. 30. Disconnect the EVR vacuum supply hose and the vacuum reservoir vacuum line. 31. Disconnect the wiring connector. 32. Disconnect the fuel line; refer to Section 310-01 . 33. Remove the A/C compressor; refer to Section 412-03 . 34. Disconnect the power steering pressure and return hoses. 35. Remove the nut retaining the wiring harness. 36. Disconnect the block heater if equipped. 37. Raise the vehicle on a hoist; refer to Section 100-02 . 38. Disconnect the engine ground cable

Intake Manifold—Gasoline Engines Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 . 2. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 3. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 . 4. Disconnect the fuel line. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00A or Section 310-00B . 5. Remove the wiper arm and pivot shaft. For additional information, refer to Section 501-16 . 6. Remove the drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section 303-05 . 7. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 8. Disconnect the electrical connector at the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. * Disconnect the pin-type retainer from the A/C compressor bracket. 9. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor. 10. Remove the oil bypass filter. 11. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector and the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. 12. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube from the exhaust manifold 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Disconnect the two differential pressure feedback EGR hoses. 15. Disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor electrical connector. 16. Disconnect the fuel charging wiring electrical connectors from the eight ignition coils. 17. Disconnect the fuel charging wiring electrical connectors from the eight fuel injectors. 18. Disconnect the accelerator cable and the speed control actuator cable. 19. Remove the cables from the EGR tube heat shield and position out of the way. 20. Remove the bolts and the EGR tube heat shield. 21. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) return tube, the main chassis vacuum supply line, and the EGR valve vacuum supply. 22. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube assembly at two locations and remove. 23. Disconnect the electrical connector from the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid. 24. Disconnect the vacuum line from the EVAP canister purge valve. 25. Disconnect the generator cable and electrical connector 26. Remove the bolts and the generator mounting bracket. 27. Remove the upper radiator hose. 28. Disconnect the electrical connector from the idle air control (IAC) valve and the throttle position (TP) sensor. 29. Disconnect the heater water hose. 30. Disconnect the EGR tube from the EGR valve. 31. NOTE: The LH heated oxygen sensor and the transmission electrical connectors are attached to the wiring bracket and must be separated from the bracket. Remove the wiring bracket. * Disconnect the wiring connectors. * Separate the transmission harness from the stud. * Remove the nut and the bolt and remove the bracket.

Intake Manifold — Upper 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube; refer to Section 303-12 3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector and the noise suppressor electrical connector. 4. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) electrical connector. 5. Disconnect the EGR backpressure transducer electrical connector. 6. Disconnect the EVR solenoid electrical and vacuum connectors. 7. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. 8. Disconnect the vacuum connector from the upper intake manifold 9. Disconnect the vacuum connector from the fuel pressure regulator and remove the vacuum harness from the engine. 10. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector. 11. Disconnect the hoses from the EGR backpressure transducer ports. 12. Disconnect the six spark plug wires from the spark plugs. 13. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the seven retaining clips. 14. Remove the four ignition coil bolts and the ignition coil from the upper intake manifold. 15. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02 . 16. Access the LH exhaust manifold through the wheel well and disconnect the EGR inlet tube from the exhaust manifold (9430). 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Disconnect the EGR inlet tube from the EGR valve and remove the EGR inlet tube. 19. Remove the EGR valve bolts and the EGR valve and gasket. 20. Remove the oil level indicator tube bracket nut and remove the oil level indicator tube (6754). 21. Remove the EGR outlet tube bracket stud bolt and remove the EGR outlet tube from the upper intake manifold. 22. Disconnect the accelerator cable assembly from the upper intake manifold bracket. 23. Remove the upper intake manifold nuts and remove the upper intake manifold and gasket. Installation 1. NOTE: Before installing the upper intake manifold, the EGR port must be clean and free of obstruction. Use combustion chamber cleaner and a suitable wire brush to remove carbon buildup from the EGR passages. Clean and inspect all surfaces. Install new seals and new gaskets. Use Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M5B392-A to clean the upper and lower intake manifold gasket surfaces. Position the upper intake manifold gasket on the fuel injection supply manifold. 2. Position the upper intake manifold and install the six nuts.

Remove the shield. 18. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the rear of the upper intake manifold. 19. Disconnect the intake manifold tuning valve (IMTV) electrical connector. 20. Disconnect the exhaust vacuum regulator (EVR). 1. Disconnect the electrical connector. 2. Disconnect the vacuum line. 21. Remove the upper intake support bolt. 22. Remove the front intake manifold support bolt.

Instrument Panel Removal CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result. 1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Section 211-04 . 2. Remove the passenger side air bag module. Refer to Section 501-20B . 3. Disconnect the antenna in-line connector. 4. Remove the RH instrument panel reinforcement bolt. 5. Close the glove compartment. 6. Remove the utility compartment. 1. Remove the four two part pin type retainers. 2. Remove the utility compartment. * Disconnect the power point electrical connector. 7. If equipped, disconnect the compact disc changer electrical connector. 8. Release the compact disc changer electrical connector locator. 9. Remove the LH and RH scuff plates. 10. Remove the LH and RH A-pillar lower trim panels. 11. Position the LH and RH front door weatherstrip seals aside. 12. Remove the RH ground bolts. 13. If equipped, remove LH and RH instrument panel lower insulators. 14. Remove the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover. 15. Remove the instrument panel opening cover reinforcement. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the instrument panel opening cover reinforcement. 16. Disconnect the LH wiring harness electrical connectors. 17. Disconnect the electronic crash sensor (ECS) electrical connector. 1. Release the locking clip. 2. Disconnect the ECS electrical connector 18. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift cable. 1. Disconnect the cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Disconnect the cable from the steering column bracket. 19. Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column. 1. Remove the pinch bolt. 2. Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column. 20. Disconnect the climate control harness electrical connector. 21. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector. 22. Disconnect the fuse junction panel electrical connectors. 23. Remove the LH instrument panel reinforcement bol 4. Remove the four instrument panel center support bolts. 25. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille. * If equipped, disconnect the sunload sensor electrical connector. 26. Remove the cowl top bolts. 27. Remove the RH cowl side bolts. 28. Remove the LH cowl side bolts. 29. NOTE: Two technicians are required to carry out this step. Remove the instrument panel. 1. Do not drain the engine oil until specified to in step 12 2. Remove strut tower brace (if equipped) 3. Remove engine cover by unbolting the four 10mm bolts . SEE FIGURE 1 FIGURE 1 4. Remove factory air box. SEE FIGURE 2 FIGURE 2 5. Remove mass air sensor from the stock intake tube using a Philips screwdriver. SEE FIGURES 3 & 4 FIGURE 3 FIGURE 4 60153_revA Page 8 of 31 6. Install the factory mass air sensor into the new supplied intake tube (P/N 21441) and secure using the two factory Philips screws. SEE FIGURE 5 FIGURE 5 7. Unplug the three O2 sensors on the factory exhaust manifold / catalytic converters. 8. Remove three 12mm bolts at the collector where the factory manifold / catalytic converter meets the exhaust. Save both factory crush o-rings, it will be used later when re-installing the new supplied downpipe. SEE FIGURE 6 FIGURE 6 9. Remove the factory exhaust manifold and catalytic converters by unbolting eight 14mm bolts. SEE FIGURES 7 & 8 INTAKE PIPE P/N 21441 FACTOR Y MASS AIR SENSOR 60153_revA Page 9 of 31 FIGURE 7 FIGURE 8 10. Unplug and remove all three O2 sensors (two pre-cats, and one post cat) from the factory exhaust manifold / catalytic converter. Make you keep track of which sensors are pre-cats and which one is post cat. SEE FIGURE 9 & 10 FIGURE 9 FIGURE 10 11. Locate the pad on the mid-pan on the passenger side of the vehicle. Drill the mid-pan with a 9/16″ drill bit and tap the hole with the supplied 3/8″ NPT tap (P/N 30809) for the turbo oil return. NOTE: When drilling and tapping the mid-pan, use extreme caution to get minimal amount of chips into the motor. Coat both drill bit and tap with excess amount of grease to catch any chips that may enter the engine. 12. Prior to draining the engine oil, clean the threaded hole thoroughly using brake / carb cleaner for any chips or debris. Remove oil drain plug and drain oil. 13. Install new supplied 5/8″ barb x 3/8″ NPT brass fitting (P/N 30133) to the new threaded hole on the mid- pan. It is strongly recommended that you apply a small amount of liquid Teflon to the threads of the fitting. Unplug the factory oil sending unit located on the driver’s side below the intake manifold, next to the oil filter. Remove sending unit using a 24mm socket. SEE FIGURE 12 FIGURE 12 15. Thread the supplied brass 1/8″ NPT to -3AN fitting (P/N 30544) to the supplied 1/8″ NPT T-fitting (P/N 30562) as shown in FIGURE 13 NOTE: It is recommended that you apply a minimal amount of liquid Teflon to the threads of the fittings. Do not use Teflon Tape. FIGURE 13 P/N 30544 P/N 30562 FACTORY OIL SENDING UNIT ENGINE BLOCK 60153_revA Page 11 of 31 16. Thread the T-fitting assembly into the original port of the factory oil sending unit with the open female port facing upward when tightened. FIGURE 14 FIGURE 14 17. Install the factory oil sending unit to the open female port as shown in FIGURE 15 FIGURE 15 18. Install one end of the supplied -3AN line (P/N 10721) to the 1/8″ NPT to -3AN fitting (P/N 30544) installed previously on the t-fitting (P/N 30562) with the factory oil sending unit. SEE FIGURE 15 INSTALLING THE TURBOCHARGER, WASTEGATE, DOWNPIPE, AND MANIFOLD 19. Install the four supplied M10x1.25 studs (P/N 30806) to the turbo flange of the new supplied exhaust manifold (P/N 21444) and install the two supplied M8x1.25 studs (P/N 30860) into the wastegate flange on the new exhaust manifold. 2001 Toyota Highlander Sport Utility PRELIMINARY: Disconnect the negative battery cable. ANTENNA: The factory antenna is located atop the right front fender panel. RADIO REMOVAL AND IN-DASH INSTALLATION: Note: The factory radio provision is for a Double ISO/DIN style radio. An installation kit is required when installing an aftermarket stereo. 1. Using panel removal tool carefully pry off radio bezel. 2. Extract (6) 10 mm bolts securing radio and climate controls in dash, disconnect and remove. 3. Extract (8) Iso screws securing radio to bracket. 4. Extract (2) Philips screws securing bracket to bezel, pull away and remove radio. FRONT DOOR SPEAKER INSTALLATION: Note: The factory speaker provision is for a 1 ½” tweeter and a 6 ½” 3-Hole speaker mounted to a factory speaker adapter. 1. Remove screw cover from door opener cup and exract (1) Philips head screw, pry bezel out then forward to remove. 2. Remove inside mirror cover. 3. Pry out door cup and extract (1) Philips screw from beneath. 4. Exract (1) plastic fastener from front top portion of door. 5. Pry off door panel, pull away, disconnect, and remove. 6. Extract (3) 10 mm bolts securing speaker, pull away, disconnect, and remove. REAR DOOR SPEAKER INSTALLATION: Note: The factory speaker provision is for a 5 ¼” 3-Hole speaker mounted in a factory speaker adapter. 1. Remove screw cover from door opener cup and extract (1) Philips head screw, pry bezel out then forward to remove. 2. Pry out door cup and extract (1) Philips screw from beneath. 3. Pry off door panel, pull away, disconnect and remove. 4. Extract (3) 10 mm bolts securing speaker , pull away, disconnect, and remove

CARBURETOR (COROLLA) REMOVAL 1) Drain cooling system. Disconnect air intake hose. Disconnect emission control hoses from air cleaner. Remove air cleaner mounting bolt and wing nut. Remove air cleaner. 2) Disconnect accelerator cable. Disconnect throttle cable (A/T). Disconnect carburetor wiring connector. Disconnect emission control hoses and tag for installation. Disconnect fuel inlet hose. Remove 4 carburetor mounting nuts and No. 1 vacuum pipe. Remove carburetor. DISASSEMBLY Air Horn 1) Remove air cleaner setting bolt. Remove fuel pipe clamp, union, fuel pipe and gaskets. Remove vacuum hoses. Remove pump and pivot screw and pump arm with connecting link. Disconnect choke link and choke opener link. 2 Remove 8 air horn screws and number plate, fuel pipe support and wire clamps. Remove air horn from carburetor body. Disconnect wiring from solenoid valves. 3) Remove float pivot pin, float and needle valve assembly. Remove air horn gasket, needle valve seat and gasket, power piston retainer, power piston and spring. Remove pump plunger and boot. See Fig. 2.

Disconnect throttle positioner links and remove bracket attaching bolts. Remove accelerator pump retainer gasket and remove pump discharge weight, long spring and discharge large ball. See Fig. 1. 2) Remove pump dampening spring. Using tweezers, remove plunger retainer and check ball. Disconnect throttle positioner link and throttle position levers, washer and spring. Remove primary and secondary main passage plugs and gaskets. Remove primary and secondary main jets and gaskets. 3) Remove auxiliary acceleration pump (AAP) housing, spring and diaphragm. Remove AAP inlet plug and check ball. Remove outlet plug, short spring and small ball. Remove primary and secondary small venturies. 4) Remove sight glass retainer, sight glass and “O” ring. Remove throttle lever return spring and back spring. Remove throttle lever and fast idle cam. 5) Disconnect link and remove secondary throttle valve diaphragm assembly and gasket. Remove throttle position switch and bracket. Remove 3 body-to-flange screws and vacuum passage screw. Separate body from flange. See Fig. 3. Remove washer from throttle valve shaft. Remove idle mixture adjusting screw and idle speed adjusting screw.

For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B . 2. Remove the passenger side air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B . 3. Close the glove compartment. 4. Position the speed control servo aside. 1. Disconnect the electrical connector. 2. Remove the nuts. 3. Position the speed control servo aside. 5. Disconnect the LH engine compartment in-line electrical connector. * Release the wiring harness locators. 6. Disconnect the brake fluid sensor electrical connector. 7. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor electrical connector. * Release the wiring harness locators. 8. Disconnect the LH engine compartment in-line electrical connectors. 9. Unseat the LH wiring harness grommet 10. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector. 11. Disconnect the A/C pressure cut-off switch electrical connector. 12. Disconnect the RH engine compartment in-line wiring harness connectors. 13. Disconnect the vacuum line at the intake manifold. 14. Disconnect the electronic air temperature control (EATC) variable blower motor controller electrical connector. * Release the wiring harness locators. 15. Remove the RH front wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 . 16. Remove the upper front fender splash shield bolts. 17. Remove the lower front fender splash shield bolt and locator. 18. Position the front fender splash shield away from the dash panel. 19. Unlock the wiring harness guide. 20. Unseat the RH wiring harness grommet. 21. Install the RH front wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 . 22. Remove the RH instrument panel lower insulator. 1. Remove the pin-type retainers. 2. Release the locking tab. 3. Remove the instrument panel lower insulator. * Disconnect the courtesy lamp.

Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 . 2. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00A (Gasoline) or Section 310-00B (Natural Gas). 3. Disconnect the fuel lines. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00A (Gasoline) or Section 310-00B (Natural Gas). 4. Remove the throttle body (9E926). For additional information, refer to Throttle Body in this section. 5. On gasoline engines, remove the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube (9D477). For additional information, refer to Section 303-08 . 6. Remove the drive belt (8620). For additional information, refer to Section 303-05 . Vehicles equipped with natural gas engines 7. Disconnect the fuel temperature sensor connector. 8. Disconnect the fuel pressure sensor connector. All vehicles 9. Disconnect the main fuel shut-off solenoid connector. 10. Disconnect the generator cable, electrical connector, and harness pin-type retainer. 11. Remove the bolts and the generator mounting bracket (10153). 12. Remove the bolts. 13. Unclip the accelerator cable (9A758) and the speed control actuator cable (9A825) from the two crash brackets and position out of the way. 14. Separate the LH heated oxygen sensor and the transmission electrical connector from the bracket at the rear of the cylinder head. 15. Separate the fuel charging wiring pin-type retainer from the crash bracket. 16. Remove the wiring bracket. * Disconnect the wiring connectors. * Separate the transmission harness from the stud. * Remove the nut and the bolt and remove the bracket 17. NOTE: On natural gas vehicles, there are no EGR vacuum connections. Disconnect the vacuum lines and position out of the way. 18. Remove bolt and stud and remove the crash bracket. 19. Disconnect the ground connector from the RH rear stud. 20. Disconnect generator harness locator retainer from LH front stud. 21. Disconnect the eight fuel injector electrical connectors
