3.0L INTERMITTENT CYLINDER HEAD CAMSHAFT KNOCK/THUMP NOISE This article supersedes TSB 09-11-6 to update the b. Isolate noise to LH – Listen to the cylinders Service Procedure and Part List. 4 and 6 valve cover fasteners (number 6 is by the coolant pump). This noise is different from other noises that may begin to occur at 3219-4828 km (2000-3000 mi). Some customers may comment on a ticking type noise that begins shortly after cold engine start-up and gradually diminishes as the engine warms up. In most cases, the noise is gone after five (5) minutes. In severe cases, the noise may not disappear when lhe engine is hot. CAUSE Under normal design tolerances when the piston pin bore is produced at the maximum tolerance and the piston pin is produced at the minimum tolerance (min-max tolerance) trace noise levels can occur. This level of noise does not affect the reliability or durability of the product. CORRECTION If piston-to-pin noise is detected and the customer desires the condition to be corrected, replace all six pistons with pin assemblies. The new piston sets have a minimal piston-to-pin clearance. Remember, piston-to-pin noise occurs in both park and drive at engine idle rpm and it varies in intensity depending on the number of pistons involved. A ticking sound means one piston is affected whereas a rattle or diesel type sound indicates more than one piston affected. The following should also be checked: 1. On W-Cars, make sure the right side engine splash shield is not contacting the engine crankshaft balancer. This condition usually happens cold and is caused by the shield curling when cold. 2. Reference Service Bulletin 57-71-06 for transmission rattle noise often confused for engine rattle noise. 3. Reference Service Bulletin 47-61-36 for Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner noise. 4. Check cylinder bore diameter and piston diameter as outlined in the Service Manual. Use the procedure in the appropriate Service Manual for piston replacement. Service Bulletin 57-61-24 (Section 6 – Engine). NOTE: Excessive cylinder bore to piston diameter clearance can cause a similar type noise. NOTE: When installing the new piston and pin assembly onto the existing rods, use extreme care to avoid damage to either the pin or piston bore. If damage to these areas occurs, the noise will return because the damage will cause wear and excessive clearance

Single clunk noise from front suspension when applying the brakes: • The noise is a result of the brake pads shifting in the direction of rotor rotation when the brakes are applied. Can be duplicated by lightly touching the brake pedal. • • If the brake pedal is pushed hard, the noise is less likely to occur. Make sure the brake pads and pad hardware (shims, springs, clips, etc) are installed correctly. Refer to ASIST for vehicle specific brake service information. Condition Some customers may comment on a ticking or knocking type noise coming from the engine or transmission area. Cause Typically the noise is caused by either the transmission rear dust cover contacting the flexplate (refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-01-028) or a cracked flexplate (sometimes also referred to as a flywheel). Correction With the vehicle raised and supported on a suitable hoist, verify that the noise is coming from the flexplate area. If the noise is present, follow the procedure below. If the noise is not coming from the flexplate area, refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed in SI. Important: The following information only applies to vehicles with the noise coming from the flexplate area.

Adjust the cable. Replace the cable, if damaged. Difficltto Open Dirty weatherstrip. Clean all soda spills or other sticky substances that may have accumulated on weatherstrip and door. Difficult to Open Manually Inside handle release button damaged. Replace inside handle release button assembly according to TSB No. BO027-00, “Sliding Door Handle Push Button Operation”. Door out of adjustment. Adjust levelness of the door, according to Repair Manual. Dragging Open/Close Mll Running board rubs against the bottom of the sliding door. Adjust running board to proper position and assure clearance from the door. Manually Roller rails have bent or warp condition. Dirt or debris in the rails and rollers. Clean rails and rollers. Replace damaged parts. CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSE COMMON REPAIR Creak Noise Junction block, damaged components, and other issues Refer to TSB No. BO003-99, “Sliding Door Creak Noise Reduction.” Refer to the “Common Sources of Creak Noise” section of this bulletin for additional information for sources of creak noise.
