HEATER CORE Removal Procedure 1. Remove the heater/vent module. Refer to HEATER/VENT MODULE . 2. Remove the heater core access cover screws. Install the heater core to the heater/vent module Fig. 16: Identifying Heater Core Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 2. Install the heater core access cover. Tighten Tighten the heater core access cover screws to 1.9 N.m (17 lb in). NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect blower motor resistor harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between all blower motor resistor terminals. If continuity exists between all terminals, go to next step. If continuity does not exist between all terminals, replace faulty blower motor resistor. 2. Check for open or short in circuits between blower motor resistor and heater control panel. Also check for open or short in wire between blower motor resistor and blower motor. BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH 2000 Dakota, 2000 Durango & 2000-01 Ram Pickup 1. Remove Power Distribution Center (PDC) cover. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage at PDC fuse No. 5 (40-amp) on Dakota and Durango; PDC fuse No. 12 (40-amp) on Ram Pickup. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for open in Red wire between battery and underhood PDC. If Red wire is okay, replace underhood PDC. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect heater control panel cable, electrical and vacuum connectors as necessary. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire on Dakota and Durango; Black/Orange on Ram Pickup) and ground. See Fig. 5 . If continuity exists, go to step 4 . 3. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire or Black/Orange wire between heater control panel 2001 Dodge Durango 2000-01 HEATER SYSTEMS’ ‘RWD Trucks & Vans harness connector terminal No. 7 and ground connector located at lower right corner of instrument panel (Dakota and Durango) or behind center of instrument panel (Ram Pickup). 4. Place heater mode control knob to any position except OFF. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel terminal No. 7 and terminals No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 while rotating blower motor switch. See Fig. 5 . 5. If continuity does not exist at any terminal, replace faulty heater control panel. If continuity exists as specified, check for open in circuits between heater control panel and blower motor resistor. Also check for an open in circuit between heater control panel and blower motor. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect heater control panel harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel C3 harness connector terminal “C” (Black wire) and ground. See Fig. 6 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between heater control panel and ground connector located at lower right of steering column. 2. Place heater mode control selector to any position, except OFF. Using DVOM, check for continuity between appropriate terminals of heater control panel, for C3 connector terminals “B” (Violet wire) and “C” (Black wire). If continuity exists through heater control panel, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace faulty heater control panel assembly. 3. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel C3 connector terminal “B” (Violet wire) and C1 connector terminal “E” (Violet wire). See Fig. 6 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Violet wire between heater control panel C3 and C1 connectors.

Verify that the coolant is at proper level in the radiator and the coolant recovery bottle. If the coolant is low, add proper amount of 50/50 water and DEX-COOL® mixture. If the low coolant light operates properly, diagnose the cooling system for loss of coolant as outlined in SI. DO NOT proceed further with this bulletin. 2. Remove the low coolant level sensor. Refer to Coolant Level Module Replacement in the Engine Cooling sub-section. 3. With the key on, the engine off and the coolant level sensor disconnected from the vehicle wiring harness, observe the low coolant light: Subject: Low Engine Coolant Level Indicator Always On (Diagnose Low Coolant Level System Operation/Check Sensor for Oil Contamination) Models: 2000-2002 Buick Century, Regal 2000-2001 Chevrolet Lumina 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo 2000-2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 2000-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue • Light is on — Chassis wiring or instrument cluster concern. Follow the appropriate diagnostic information in SI. • 4. With the key off, connect the coolant level sensor into the vehicle’s wiring harness. Connect a ground wire (1) to the battery negative terminal. Using a sharp probe (3) attached to the ground wire, ground the coolant sensor probe (2) as shown in the illustration. Make sure a good contact is made. With the key on and the engine off, observe the low coolant light for at least 15 seconds. 5. Using a small wire brush or emery cloth, polish the low coolant level sensor probe to remove any film or oxidation. The probe should be a bright brass color when finished. Use Brake Parts Cleaner to flush removed deposits from the low coolant sensor probe. Reinstall the low coolant sensor into the vehicle and proceed to Step 6. 6. Flush the cooling system and install new DEX-COOL® mixture as outlined in the SI. Check the vehicle’s warranty history to determine if any engine gasket had recently been changed. If there has not been a recent gasket replacement, locate and repair the source of the engine oil contamination

Removal and Installation NOTE: If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be pressure leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 . 1. Drain the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03A . 2. Remove the instrument panel. Remove the screw. 2. Remove the A/C plenum demister adapter. 5. Remove the screws and position aside the relay bracket. 6. Disconnect the vacuum line. 7. Remove the plenum chamber top. 1. DO NOT disassemble the Control Valve Body from the Case Cover. Remove ONLY the Case Cover-to- Case bolts to remove the Case Cover and Valve Body from Transmission Case AS AN ASSEMBLY . To access all Case Cover-to-Case bolts, it is necessary to remove the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Assembly (322), and 1-2 & 3-4 Shift Solenoid Valve Assemblies (315A, 315B).

Remove the screws and the glove box housing. 12. Disconnect the glove box housing electrical connectors. 13. Remove the knee bolster. 14. NOTE: Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion. 3. Install the bolts securing the sides of the instrument panel to the body. Tighten Tighten the instrument panel-to-body bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft) . 4. Install the bolts securing the bottom of the instrument panel to the floor. Tighten Tighten the instrument panel-to-floor bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft) .

The distinguishing characteristic of this condition is that it likely will have been present since new, and is typically noticed within the first 161-322 km (100-200 mi). This noise is different from other noises that may begin to occur at 3219-4828 km (2000-3000 mi). SERVICE PROCEDURE You will be performing the following, as required: • Determine the DTC Stored in ECM from the CONSULT-II Self-diagnosis results. • ECM Part Number Check to determine if this bulletin applies. • ECM Reprogramming (required if the ECM P/N in the vehicle matches one of those listed under “Current ECM P/N” in Chart A -page 2). • Replacing the Rear Oxygen Sensor (required if ECM Reprogramming is needed). Determine the DTC Stored in ECM: 1. Determine which DTC code is stored in the vehicle’s ECM by performing CONSULT-II Self-Diagnosis. 2. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Remove two console armrest mounting access covers (047A62) at rear of console panel (045A36) (snaps out) to gain access to armrest retaining bolts. 3. Remove four armrest-to-floor bracket retaining bolts and remove armrest assembly (snaps out of console). 4. Remove console panel gear shift plate (044G24) (snaps out). On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, shift boot is attached to bottom of finish panel. Remove shift knob and slide boot and console panel gear shift plate up shift lever to remove. 5. To remove top finish panel position emergency brake lever in the UP position. Remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up. Disconnect necessary wire connectors. 6. Remove two console-to-rear floor bracket retaining screws. 7. Insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out. 8. If the vehicle has a radio chassis (18806) , the radio chassis must be removed. Refer to Section 15-01 . If the vehicle doesn’t have a radio chassis , use a small screwdriver and pry radio cover finish panel out of console. 9. Flex glove compartment bin tabs inward. Drop down glove compartment (06010) assembly. Remove two console-to-instrument panel retaining screws. 10. Remove four console bracket retaining screws. Remove console panel from vehicle. 11. Remove three bolts retaining steering column opening cover (3A673) and reinforcement panel. Remove cover. 12. Remove steering column opening reinforcement by removing two bolts. 13. Remove two bolts retaining steering column opening reinforcement and remove reinforcement. 14. Remove six steering column retaining nuts (two retaining the hood release mechanism and four retaining column to lower brake pedal support). Lower steering column to floor. 15. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds (3530) and disconnect wiring from turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) . 16. Remove steering column through bolt and nut on engine compartment side of cowl panel. Remove steering column from vehicle. 17. Remove brake pedal support nut. 18. Snap out instrument panel defroster opening grille (044E82) . 19. Remove screws from speaker covers. Snap out speaker covers. 20. Remove front screws retaining RH and LH scuff plates at cowl side trim panels. 21. Remove RH and LH cowl side trim panels. 22. Disconnect wiring at RH cowl side. 23. Remove cowl side retaining bolts (one each side) . 24. Remove five cowl top screws attachments. 25. Gently pull instrument panel (04320) away from RH side of cowl panel. Disconnect speedometer cable, air conditioning controls and wire connectors. 26. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the heater water hose connections at the cowl panel. 27. Disconnect heater water hoses (18472) from heater core tubes and plug heater water hoses with suitable 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch plugs. Cap heater core tubes to prevent coolant loss from heater core (18476) during removal of heater case. 28. Remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case support bracket (19A639) to cowl top panel. 29. Disconnect vacuum supply supply hose (black) from A/C vacuum supply in engine compartment.

Evaporator Core Housing Removal 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 . 2. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 . 3. Drain the radiator so that the coolant level is below the heater core. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 4. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 5. Remove the RH front wheel and tire. 6. Remove the screws from the RH fender apron and remove the fender apron. 7. Remove the nuts. 8. Lower the vehicle. 9. Remove the blower motor switch resistor. For additional information, refer to Section 412-04 . 10. Disconnect the connector. 11. Disconnect the evaporator to compressor suction line from the suction accumulator drier. For spring lock couplings disconnect and connect general procedure. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 12. Disconnect the condenser to evaporator tube from the A/C evaporator core inlet tube. For spring lock couplings disconnect and connect general procedure. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 13. Remove the nuts and position the purge valve and backet away from the evaporator core housing. 14. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core. 15. Disengage the connectors fom the bracket. 16. Disconnect the connector. 17. Remove the nut and reposition the wire harness away from the evaporator housing. 8 18. Disengage the harness from the bracket. 19. Remove the pin-type retainer and clip and remove the instrument panel lower insulator. 20. Fold back the carpet and remove the screw. 21. Inside the vehicle, remove the screw. 22. Remove the nuts(engine side).
