REMOVAL & INSTALLATION STEERING COLUMN Removal 1) Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove steering wheel. On Cressida, Corolla, MR2 and Tercel models, remove fuse box cover, lower instrument trim panel and air duct from under steering column. 2) On all models, remove upper and lower steering column covers. Remove combination switch. Mark position of “U” joints and shaft for reassembly. 3) On models with “U” joints, remove “U” joint retaining bolt. On models with flexible joint, remove flexible joint retaining bolt. NOTE: On 2WD Pickup models, remove steering column with intermediate shaft attached. 4) On all models, mark position of joint and pinion shaft for reassembly. Remove intermediate steering shaft. 5) Remove floor pan cover bolts. Remove tilt bracket-to- dashboard mounting bolts. Remove steering column toward inside of vehicle. Installation 1) To install steering columns, reverse disassembly procedure. Grease main steering shaft and all bearings. 2) Ensure marks made to flexible couplings and to “U” joints are aligned. Ensure steering column and shafts do not bind after installation. STEERING COLUMN OVERHAUL NOTE: Camry, Corolla, MR2 and Tercel steering columns are similar. Some of the following procedures will not pertain to all models. Disassembly (Camry, Corolla, MR2 & Tercel) 1) Remove tension springs, grommets and screws from tilt bracket. Remove tilt lever left-hand set bolt. Remove column upper support lock bolt. 2) Remove tilt steering support bolts and pawl set bolts. Place bushings and “O” rings aside and keep them clean. Remove ignition lock cylinder. 3) Using a screwdriver, push 2 thrust stoppers into bearing retainers. Pull out shaft from column. Remove the No. 1 column ring, bearing retainer, thrust stoppers and No. 2 column ring from shaft. 4) Remove snap ring and lower bearing from shaft. Remove bearing inner snap ring. Remove upper bracket retaining bolts and ground strap. Separate upper bracket from column. Inspection 1) Check that steering lock mechanism operates properly. Check upper bearing for smooth rotation or excessive noise. Replace upper bearing (if necessary). 2) Using Drift (09631-00020) and Adapter (09627-30010), drive bearing from upper bracket. Pack new bearing with grease. Using the same drift and adapter used in removal, drive new bearing into upper bracket. 3) Inspect lower bearing for smooth rotation or excessive noise. If lower bearing shows signs of wear or damage, replace with a new one. Reassembly 1) Install upper bracket onto column. Install ground strap. Tighten retaining bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). Install inner snap ring on shaft groove nearest to center of shaft. 2) Install lower bearing and lower bearing snap ring. Place No. 2 column ring into position next to bearing on side nearest center of shaft. See Fig. 4.

CARBURETOR (COROLLA) REMOVAL 1) Drain cooling system. Disconnect air intake hose. Disconnect emission control hoses from air cleaner. Remove air cleaner mounting bolt and wing nut. Remove air cleaner. 2) Disconnect accelerator cable. Disconnect throttle cable (A/T). Disconnect carburetor wiring connector. Disconnect emission control hoses and tag for installation. Disconnect fuel inlet hose. Remove 4 carburetor mounting nuts and No. 1 vacuum pipe. Remove carburetor. DISASSEMBLY Air Horn 1) Remove air cleaner setting bolt. Remove fuel pipe clamp, union, fuel pipe and gaskets. Remove vacuum hoses. Remove pump and pivot screw and pump arm with connecting link. Disconnect choke link and choke opener link. 2 Remove 8 air horn screws and number plate, fuel pipe support and wire clamps. Remove air horn from carburetor body. Disconnect wiring from solenoid valves. 3) Remove float pivot pin, float and needle valve assembly. Remove air horn gasket, needle valve seat and gasket, power piston retainer, power piston and spring. Remove pump plunger and boot. See Fig. 2.

Disconnect throttle positioner links and remove bracket attaching bolts. Remove accelerator pump retainer gasket and remove pump discharge weight, long spring and discharge large ball. See Fig. 1. 2) Remove pump dampening spring. Using tweezers, remove plunger retainer and check ball. Disconnect throttle positioner link and throttle position levers, washer and spring. Remove primary and secondary main passage plugs and gaskets. Remove primary and secondary main jets and gaskets. 3) Remove auxiliary acceleration pump (AAP) housing, spring and diaphragm. Remove AAP inlet plug and check ball. Remove outlet plug, short spring and small ball. Remove primary and secondary small venturies. 4) Remove sight glass retainer, sight glass and “O” ring. Remove throttle lever return spring and back spring. Remove throttle lever and fast idle cam. 5) Disconnect link and remove secondary throttle valve diaphragm assembly and gasket. Remove throttle position switch and bracket. Remove 3 body-to-flange screws and vacuum passage screw. Separate body from flange. See Fig. 3. Remove washer from throttle valve shaft. Remove idle mixture adjusting screw and idle speed adjusting screw.

Manual A/C REMOVAL PROCEDURE CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 3. Remove the instrument panel storage compartment. 4. Disconnect the passenger side SIR. 5. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 6. Remove the left and right front speaker grilles. 7. Remove the center instrument panel sound insulator. 8. Remove the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 9. Disconnect the park brake release cable. 10. Remove the knee bolster. 11. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 12. Remove the BCM. 13. Disconnect the driver side SIR. 14. Remove the instrument panel cluster. 15. Remove the radio. 16. Remove the HVAC control assembly. 17. Remove the steering column retaining retaining nuts. 18. Lower the steering column. 19. Remove the instrument panel carrier. 20. Remove the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 21. Disconnect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 22. Remove the hood. 23. Remove the VCM. 24. Remove the coolant recovery tank. 25. Remove the heater hoses. 26. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the grille mounted lamps. 27. Remove the right front headlamp assembly. 28. Remove the front bumper. 29. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. 30. Disconnect the radio antenna cable. 31. Disconnect the electrical connector for the horn. 32. Remove the right fender. 33. Remove the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 34. Remove the blower motor resistor. 35. Remove the evaporator case bolts and screws. 36. Remove the accumulator. 37. Remove the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 38. Remove the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. 39. Pull back lightly on the heater case to remove the evaporator case. 40. Remove the evaporator case retaining screws. 41. Disassemble the evaporator case sections, and remove the evaporator core. NOTE: If replacing the evaporator core, remove the expansion (orofice) tube and install it into the new core. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Install the evaporator core. 2. Assemble the evaporator case sections. 3. Install the evaporator case retaining screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 in lb) . 4. Install the evaporator core assembly to the vehicle. 5. Install the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. Tighten the bolts to 4.5 N.m (40 lb in) . 6. Install the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 7. Install the accumulator. 1998 Chevy Truck S10/T10 Blazer 2WD 8. Install the evaporator case bolts and screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 In in) . 9. Install the blower motor resistor. 10. Install the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 11. Install the right fender. 12. Connect the electrical connector for the horn. 13. Install the radio antenna cable. 14. Install the right wheelhouse panel. 15. Install the front bumper. 16. Install the right front headlamp assembly. 17. Connect the electrical connectors to the grille mounted lamps. 18. Install the heater hoses. 19. Install the coolant recovery tank. 20. Install the VCM. 21. Install the hood. 22. Connect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 23. Install the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 24. Install the instrument panel carrier. 25. Reposition the the steering column, and install the steering column retaining nuts. 26. Install the HVAC control assembly. 27. Install the radio. 28. Install the instrument panel cluster. 29. Connect the driver side SIR. 30. Install the BCM. 31. Install the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 32. Install the knee bolster. 33. Connect the park brake release cable. 34. Install the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 35. Install the center instrument panel sound insulator. 36. Install the left and right front speaker grilles. 37. Install the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 38. Connect the passenger side SIR. 39. Install the instrument panel storage compartment. 40. Install the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 41. Connect the negative battery cable. 42. Inspect the system for leaks.

Wheel Hub Removal All vehicles 1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04 . 2. NOTE: Caliper is removed for clarity. Position aside the front disc brake caliper and anchor plate (2B292). 1. Remove the two front disc brake caliper anchor plate bolts. 2. Remove the front disc brake caliper anchor plate and position aside. 3. NOTE: Carry out this step for F-250 and F-350 4×4 SRW vehicles. Remove the rotor. 4. NOTE: Carry out this step for DRW vehicles. NOTE: If excessive force must be used during brake rotor removal, the brake rotors should be checked for lateral runout prior to installation. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00 . Remove the eight hub extender nuts, the hub plate and the rotor. 1. Remove the eight hub plate nuts. 2. Remove the hub plate. 3. Remove the rotor. 5. Remove the hub lock. 1. Remove the retainer ring. 2. Pull outward and remove the hub lock. 6. Remove the axle shaft thrust washers. 1. Remove the snap ring. 2. Remove the three thrust washers. Vehicles equipped with ABS 7. sensor from the bearing. Disconnect the ABS wheel sensor harness. 1. Disconnect the connector. 2. Disconnect the harness routing clips. All vehicles 8. NOTE: The wheel hub and bearing is a slip fit design and should not require a puller to remove it. Remove the wheel hub and bearing. 1. Remove the four lock nuts. 2. Remove the wheel hub and bearing 9. If necessary, remove the brake disc shield. Vehicles with ABS 10. If necessary, remove the bolt and the ABS sensor. All vehicles 11. NOTE: If necessary, position the hub in a soft-jawed vise. Install two nuts on the studs and use the inner nut to remove the studs. 12. Remove and discard the O-ring. Installation All vehicles 1. NOTE: Any time the wheel hub is removed for any reason, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of four wheel drive operations. Install a new O-ring. 2. NOTE: Position the hub in a soft-jawed vise. Install two nuts on the studs and use the outer nut to install the studs. Vehicles equipped with ABS 3. Position the ABS sensor and install the bolt. All vehicles 4. Position the brake disc shield. 5. NOTE: Apply a coat of Ford High Temperature 4×4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease E8TZ-19590-A meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C198-A to the O-ring area of the wheel hub and bearing before installing the hub and bearing. Install the wheel hub and bearing. 1. Position the wheel hub and bearing. 2. Install the four lock nuts. Vehicle equipped with ABS 6. NOTE: The following step applies only to vehicles equipped with ABS. Connect the ABS sensor harness. 1. Position the ABS sensor harness and install the routing clips. 2. Connect the harness connector. All vehicles 7. n-metallic thrust washer must be installed between the two metal thrust washers. Failure to do so will cause severe wear to the non-metallic thrust washer, allowing the axle shaft to travel further in and out during torque thrust causing damage to the wheel hub and bearing, the axle shaft end seal and the axle shaft. Install the snap ring. 1. Position the three thrust washers onto the axle shaft. 2. Install the snap ring. 8. NOTE: Any time the hub lock is removed, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of four wheel drive functions. Install a new O-ring. 9. Install the hub lock. 1. Position the hub lock. 2. Install the retainer ring. 10. Position the front disc brake rotor (1125) to the wheel hub (1104). Make sure the wheel hub and the front disc brake rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean. ? Use brake parts cleaner to clean the front disc brake rotor. 11. NOTE: Carry out this step for DRW vehicles only. Install the front wheel hub extender and nuts.

Removal (Model 194, 8 1/4″ & 1998 Grand Cherokee 216 Axles) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel(s). If equipped with drum brakes, remove brake drum. If equipped with disc brakes, remove brake caliper and rotor. On all models, clean axle housing cover. Loosen cover bolts, and drain oil. Remove cover. 2. Remove differential pinion-shaft lock bolt. Remove pinion shaft from differential. Push in axle. Remove “C” clip from axle at pinion gear. Remove axle from tube. Remove axle shaft seal and bearing from axle tube. Installation 1. Grease bearing, and install into axle tube. Ensure bearing part number is facing outwards. Apply wheel bearing grease to axle shaft seal. Install seal in axle tube. Install axle shaft. 2. Install axle “C” clip. Pull axle out to seat “C” clip. Install pinion shaft. Install lock bolt, and tighten to specification. Apply RTV to axle housing cover. Tighten cover bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. Fill with gear oil. Removal (Model 198, 1999 Grand Cherokee 216 & 226 Axles) 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel(s). Remove brake drum. Remove nuts securing axle retainer plate to axle tube, and discard. Using slide hammer and Adapter (6790), remove axle shaft from axle tube. 2. Using a 3/8″ drill bit, drill a shallow hole into bearing retaining ring on axle. DO NOT drill into axle. Using a cold chisel, cut bearing retaining ring across drilled hole, and remove from axle shaft. Using a press and Bearing Remover (1130), remove bearing from axle shaft. Remove seal and retainer plate from axle shaft. Installation 1. Ensure axle shaft retaining plate is flat and not warped. Install retaining plate on axle shaft. Apply wheel bearing grease to axle shaft seal. Install seal on axle shaft. Grease bearing, and install on axle shaft with outer surface groove facing seal. 2. Using press and Bearing Installer (7913), press bearing onto axle shaft. Press NEW bearing retainer ring onto axle shaft. Install axle shaft in axle tube. Tighten NEW axle retainer plate nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. PINION SEAL & YOKE Removal

Service Repair No – 12.65.18 Remove 1. Disconnect battery earth lead. 2. Remove ancillary drive belt . 3. Remove RH front road wheel. 4. Remove 3 bolts securing RH splash shield to body and remove shield. 5. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt LH rear cover and remove cover. 6. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction and align the engine “SAFE” position, notch on crankshaft pulley aligned to the “ARROW” on front mounting plate and the timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears as illustrated 7. Remove bolt securing PAS pipe to engine front mounting plate. 8. Remove 3 Torx screws securing PAS pump pulley and remove pulley. Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print 9. Remove 3 bolts securing PAS pump to front mounting plate and tie pump aside. 10. Release alternator battery lead terminal cover, loosen terminal nut and disconnect lead from terminal. 11. Disconnect multiplug from alternator. 12. Remove lower bolt and upper nut and bolt securing alternator to front mounting plate. 13. Remove alternator. 14. Remove Torx screw securing idler pulley to front mounting plate and remove pulley 15. Loosen bolt securing lower engine steady to front subframe. 16. Remove bolt securing lower engine steady to sump mounting, release lower engine steady from sump mounting. 17. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt RH front cover and remove cover 18. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt LH front cover and remove cover. 19. Assemble LRT-12-161 to LRT-12-199 and secure with clamp bolt. 20. Insert LRT-12-161 with LRT-12-199 into crankshaft pulley, loosen and remove pulley bolt. 21. Remove special tool from crankshaft pulley and remove crankshaft pulley. 22. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt lower cover to cylinder block and remove cover. 23. Remove 2 bolts securing ancillary drive belt tensioner and remove tensioner. 24. Note fitted position of heat shield on A/C compressor and remove 3 bolts securing A/C compressor to front mounting plate and cylinder block. Release A/C compressor and heat shield and position aside. 25. Drain engine oil.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Remove two console armrest mounting access covers (047A62) at rear of console panel (045A36) (snaps out) to gain access to armrest retaining bolts. 3. Remove four armrest-to-floor bracket retaining bolts and remove armrest assembly (snaps out of console). 4. Remove console panel gear shift plate (044G24) (snaps out). On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, shift boot is attached to bottom of finish panel. Remove shift knob and slide boot and console panel gear shift plate up shift lever to remove. 5. To remove top finish panel position emergency brake lever in the UP position. Remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up. Disconnect necessary wire connectors. 6. Remove two console-to-rear floor bracket retaining screws. 7. Insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out. 8. If the vehicle has a radio chassis (18806) , the radio chassis must be removed. Refer to Section 15-01 . If the vehicle doesn’t have a radio chassis , use a small screwdriver and pry radio cover finish panel out of console. 9. Flex glove compartment bin tabs inward. Drop down glove compartment (06010) assembly. Remove two console-to-instrument panel retaining screws. 10. Remove four console bracket retaining screws. Remove console panel from vehicle. 11. Remove three bolts retaining steering column opening cover (3A673) and reinforcement panel. Remove cover. 12. Remove steering column opening reinforcement by removing two bolts. 13. Remove two bolts retaining steering column opening reinforcement and remove reinforcement. 14. Remove six steering column retaining nuts (two retaining the hood release mechanism and four retaining column to lower brake pedal support). Lower steering column to floor. 15. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds (3530) and disconnect wiring from turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) . 16. Remove steering column through bolt and nut on engine compartment side of cowl panel. Remove steering column from vehicle. 17. Remove brake pedal support nut. 18. Snap out instrument panel defroster opening grille (044E82) . 19. Remove screws from speaker covers. Snap out speaker covers. 20. Remove front screws retaining RH and LH scuff plates at cowl side trim panels. 21. Remove RH and LH cowl side trim panels. 22. Disconnect wiring at RH cowl side. 23. Remove cowl side retaining bolts (one each side) . 24. Remove five cowl top screws attachments. 25. Gently pull instrument panel (04320) away from RH side of cowl panel. Disconnect speedometer cable, air conditioning controls and wire connectors. 26. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the heater water hose connections at the cowl panel. 27. Disconnect heater water hoses (18472) from heater core tubes and plug heater water hoses with suitable 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch plugs. Cap heater core tubes to prevent coolant loss from heater core (18476) during removal of heater case. 28. Remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case support bracket (19A639) to cowl top panel. 29. Disconnect vacuum supply supply hose (black) from A/C vacuum supply in engine compartment.

INSTALLATION 1. Remove the screws from the rear corners of the bumper, two in each side. Figure 2 Figure 2 Bumper mounting screws, left side 2. Remove the eight screws along the bottom of the bumper. Figure 3 Figure 3 Lower bumper mounting screws Remove 2 screws in rear of bumper Remove 8 screws in bottom of bumper (4 per side) WARN INDUSTRIES PAGE 4 73465 A0 3. Lift the hood and remove the two screws from the top of the grille. Retain the hardware for use later. Figure 4 Figure 4 Grille fasteners 4. Remove the two plastic fasteners from the top of the grille. Retain the hardware for use later. Carefully pry the center pins up before removing the fasteners. Figure 5 Figure 5 Left grille fastener removal 5. Pull the grille free of the retaining clips with a “sharp” pull. Remove 2 screws Remove 2 plastic fasteners (1each side) Lift center pin then pry fastener out WARN INDUSTRIES PAGE 5 73465 A0 6. Remove five plastic fasteners from the top of the bumper. Two are behind the upper bumper support. Figure 6 Figure 6 Bumper fasteners 7. Pull the bumper corners free by pulling the ends rearward and out. The top of the bumper is snapped into plastic clips just below the fender corners, in front of the flares. Pull the bumper free. Remove the two screws that hold each plastic mounting block in place and remove the blocks. Figure 8 Figure 8 LH bumper mounting block 9. Remove the three screws and remove the upper bumper support. Remove the 8 hex flange nuts and remove the bumper beam. Retain the hardware for bumper installation. Figure 10 Figure 10 Bumper beam, left side shown 11. Remove the four screws and remove the skid pan. Retain the hardware for reinstallation of the skid pan. Figure 11 Figure 11 Skid pan 12. Remove the molded plastic inner fender extensions by clipping or drilling out the rivets holding them to the bottom of the inner fenders. Locate the 1″ hole in the side of the frame behind the body mount. Drill a 1/2″ hole through the center into the inner wall. The Spacer Tube may be used as a centering tool. Repeat for opposite side. Figure 13 Figure 13 Outside left frame rail 13. Hold the Lower Frame Bracket in position and insert a 12mm bolt with 1/2″ lock washer and flat washer through the bottom hole in the Bracket and into the threaded hole in the frame. Do not tighten yet. Figure 14 Drill ½” hole through center of existing hole into inner frame wall Clip or drill rivets to remove fender extension Fender extension WARN INDUSTRIES PAGE 9 73465 A0 14. Slide a 1/2″ flat washer and Spacer Tube over a 1/2 x 4″ bolt and insert through the Lower Frame Bracket and Frame. Install 1/2″ lock washer and hex nut. Do not tighten yet. Figure 14 15. Slide an Upper Frame Bracket above the frame rail along the inside of the Lower Frame Bracket. Align the holes and insert two 7/16 x 1 1/2″ bolts through the holes and install a lock washer and hex nut on each. Do not tighten yet.

Hub Bearing Unit Replacement 1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 2. Remove the wheel nuts, and the rear wheel. 3. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A). 4. Remove the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts (B), then remove the caliper assembly (C) from the knuckle. To prevent damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the undercarriage. Do not twist the brake hose excessively. 5. Remove the two washers (A). NOTE: During installation, make sure the washers are installed between the brake caliper bracket and the knuckle. 6. Remove the rear brake disc. 7. Remove the hub bearing unit (A) and O-ring (B). 8. Check the hub bearing unit for damage and cracks. 9. Install the hub bearing unit in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: * Use a new O-ring on reassembly. * After installing the brake caliper, make sure the clearance between lower arm B and the parking brake cable is more than 5 mm (3/16 in.). * Before installing the brake disc, clean the mating surfaces of the hub bearing unit and the brake disc. * Before installing the wheel, clean the mating surfaces of the brake disc and the inside of the wheel. * Check the wheel alignment, and adjust it if necessary. Knuckle Replacement 1. Remove the hub bearing unit. 2. Remove the splash guard (A). 3. Remove the lock pin (A) from the upper arm ball joint, then remove the castle nut (B). NOTE: During installation, install the lock pin as shown after tightening the new nut. 4. Disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle using the ball joint remover. NOTE: * Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when installing the remover. * During installation, to connect the ball joint, raise the suspension with a jack. 5. Remove the wheel speed sensor (A) from the knuckle. Do not disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector. 6. Remove the self-locking nut (A) while holding the joint pin (B) with a hex wrench (C), then disconnect the stabilizer link (D) from the knuckle, and remove the brake hose bracket (E). NOTE: Use a new self-locking nut during reassembly. 7. Remove the damper lower mounting bolt (F). NOTE: Use a new mounting bolt during reassembly. 8. Remove the control arm mounting self-locking nut (A) and washer (B). NOTE: Use a new self-locking nut during reassembly 9. Remove the lower arm mounting bolt (A), and the lower arm B mounting bolt (B), then remove the knuckle (C). NOTE: Use new mounting bolts during reassembly. 10. Install the knuckle in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: * First install all the components, and lightly tighten the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to load it with the vehicle’s weight before fully tightening to the specified torque values. * Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot when connecting the knuckle. * Before connecting the ball joint, degrease the threaded section and tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the ball joint connecting hole, and the threaded section and mating surface of the castle nut.

Removal 1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain coolant from radiator and cylinder block. Drain engine oil. Disconnect all necessary coolant hoses, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses, fuel lines and control cables. 2. Remove front exhaust tube. Remove intake manifold collector supports, and intake manifold. Remove exhaust manifold with catalytic converter. Remove air injection valve pipe. Remove intake air duct. Remove radiator fan and shroud. Remove injectors and fuel rail as an assembly. Remove distributor cap and spark plugs. 3. Set cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke, ensuring marks on crankshaft pulley and front cover align, and distributor rotor points to spark plug wire No. 1 on cap. Remove cylinder head cover. Remove distributor. 4. Prevent camshafts from turning, and remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove camshaft sprocket. See Fig. 13 . Mark and remove camshaft bearing caps in reverse order of installation. See Fig. 16 . Remove camshafts. 5. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 2 or 3 steps, in reverse order of tightening sequence. See Fig. 11 . Remove camshaft sprocket cover. Remove outer (upper) chain tensioner and guide. Remove outer timing chain. Remove idler sprocket bolt. Remove cylinder head. 6. Remove oil pan and oil strainer. See OIL PAN. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove A/C compressor idler pulley (if equipped). Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove front cover. Remove chain tensioner, tensioner arm and chain guides. Remove inner (lower) timing chain and idler sprocket. Remove oil pump drive spacer and crankshaft sprocket. Inspection 1. Inspect chain roller links. Replace chain if roller links are cracked or worn. Inspect cylinder head and cylinder block mating surfaces for warpage. If warpage exceeds specification, machine cylinder head. See CYLINDER HEAD under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. 2. If machining reduces cylinder head height to less than specification, replace cylinder head. After machining, rotate camshaft by hand. Replace cylinder head if camshaft does not rotate freely.
