Timing belt replacement intervals The information relating to timing belt replacement intervals is additional to the main purpose of this CD, but is included to provide guidance to garages and for customer advice. Where possible the recommended intervals have been compiled from vehicle manufacturers’ information. In a few instances no recommendation has been made by the manufacturer and the decision to replace the belt must be made from the evidence of a thorough examination of the condition of the existing belt. Apart from the visible condition of the belt, which is explained fully later in this section, there are several other factors which must be considered when checking a timing belt: Is the belt an original or a replacement. 1. When was the belt last replaced and was it at the correct mileage. 2. Is the service history of the vehicle known. 3. Has the vehicle been operated under arduous conditions which might warrant a shorter replacement interval. 4. Is the general condition of other components in the camshaft drive, such as the tensioner, pulleys, and other ancillary components driven by the timing belt, typically the water pump, sound enough to ensure that the life of the replacement belt will not be affected. 5. If the condition of the existing belt appears good, can you be satisfied that the belt will not fail before the next check or service is due. 6. If the belt does fail, have you considered the consequences. If the engine is an INTERFERENCE type then considerable expensive damage may well be the result. 7. The cost of replacing a belt as part of a routine service could be as little as 5 to 10% of the repair cost following a belt failure. Make sure your customer is aware of the consequences. 8. If in doubt about the condition of the belt – RENEW it. 9. Removal Removal Remove timing belt cover [1]. 1. Turn crankshaft clockwise until timing marks aligned [2]. 2. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets. 8. Fit tensioner pulley [8]. Tighten bolt to 34 Nm [7]. 9. Push tensioner pulley against belt. Install automatic tensioner unit [6]. Tighten bolts evenly to 13 Nm [5]. 10. Remove Allen key from tensioner body to release pushrod. 11. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. Ensure timing marks aligned [2] & [3] or [4]. 12. If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures. 13. Install components in reverse order of removal. 14. Reset timing belt replacement warning lamp as follows: 15. -Runner/Landcruiser: Remove grommet in speedometer housing. Depress switch using a thin screwdriver [11]. 16. Colorado: Remove speedometer housing. Remove screw indicated and insert in alternative location [12]. 17. Amazon: Lamp illuminates at 90,000 miles. Return vehicle to dealer.

Aligning Timing Marks (2001-02 Montero) Courtesy of MITSUBISHI MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA. Installation (2001-02 Montero) 1. Place auto-tensioner in soft-jawed vise to SLOWLY compress the push rod. If there is a plug at the base of the auto-tensioner body, place flat washer around plug so it will not contact vise jaw. 2. Slowly compress auto-tensioner push rod until holes in push rod and auto-tensioner housing are aligned. Insert a locking pin into the alignment holes. Install auto-tensioner on engine. 3. Ensure all timing marks are still aligned. See Fig. 11 . Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, left bank camshaft sprocket, water pump pulley, right bank camshaft sprocket, and tensioner CAUTION: Never compress the auto-tensioner too fast, or the push rod will be damaged. WARNING: Right bank camshaft can easily turn from applied spring pressure. Be careful not to pinch fingers when installing timing belt. 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Limited MITSUBISHI 3.5L V6 – SOHC many waters gallery pulley. Take all slack out of timing belt. 4. Loosen the tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767), rotate tensioner pulley against timing belt. Temporarily tighten tensioner pulley center bolt. Using Crankshaft Pulley Spacer (MD998769), turn crankshaft 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Turn crankshaft 1/4 turn clockwise. Ensure all timing belt marks are still aligned. 5. Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Position tensioner pin holes at bottom of tensioner. Install Tensioner Pulley Wrench (MD998767) on tensioner pulley. See Fig. 12 . Using torque wrench, apply 39 INCH lbs. (4.4 N.m) of torque (counterclockwise direction) to tensioner pulley. Tighten tensioner center bolt to specification while holding tensioner pulley stationary. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 6. Remove locking pin from auto-tensioner. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions clockwise and align all timing marks. DO NOT rotate counterclockwise. 7. Wait for at least 5 minutes, then check auto-tensioner push rod protrusion. To check push rod protrusion, measure clearance between body of auto-tensioner and bottom of tensioner pulley bracket arm. Clearance should be 0.15-0.20″ (3.8-5.0 mm). If protrusion is not correct, repeat timing belt tensioning procedure. Ensure all timing marks are aligned. 8. Install timing belt covers. See Fig. 10 . Install crankshaft pulley. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install accessory mount assembly on front of engine. See Fig. 13 . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedures. See Fig. 7 and Fig. 8 . Adjust drive belts to proper tension. 9. When filling cooling system, use 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Open bleed screw on top of thermostat housing. Slowly fill cooling system until coolant flows out of bleed hole. Install bleed screw. Start engine and run to normal operating temperature. Race engine to 3000 RPM several times. Stop engine. After engine cools, refill radiator and coolant reservoir tank.

Tightening torque: REMOVAL 1. Loosen water pump pulley mounting nuts or bolts. 2. Loosen two alternator mounting bolts, and detach V-belt. [Except air conditioner equipped model] 3. Remove water pump pulley and pulley cover. 4. Disconnect lead from oil pressure switch. 5. Remove oil level gauge guide together with gauge. 6. Remove crankshaft pulley. To lock crankshaft, use FLYWHEEL STOPPER [manual transmission model] or DRIVE PLATE STOPPER [automatic transmission model]. 7. Remove belt cover plate. [TURBO model] 8. Remove belt covers LH, RH and FR. 9. Removing timing belt Zoom Sized for Print (a) Loosen tensioner mounting bolts on # 1 cylinder by 1/2 turn. (b) With tensioner fully turned to slacken belt, tighten mounting bolts. (c) Mark rotating direction of timing belt, then remove belt. (d) Loosen tensioner No. 2 mounting bolts on # 2 cylinder by 1/2 turn. (e) With tensioner fully rotated to slacken belt by using TENSIONER WRENCH, tighten tensioner mounting bolts. NOTE: Cover TENSIONER WRENCH clamping tips with a rubber hose or waste cloth to prevent crankshaft or pulley from being damaged 10. Remove tensioner and tensioner No. 2 together with tensioner spring. 11. Remove belt idler. 12. Remove camshaft sprockets by using CAMSHAFT SPROCKET WRENCH. 13. Remove right-hand belt cover No. 2, left-hand belt cover No. 2 and belt cover RR. TIMING BELT 1. Check timing belt teeth for breaks, cracks, and wear. If any fault is found, replace belt. 2. Check the condition of back side of belt; if any crack is found, replace belt. A. Be careful not to let oil, grease or coolant contact the belt. Remove quickly and thoroughly if this happens. Power Steering Belt REMOVAL POWER STEERING PUMP AND AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR BELT 1. Using a 17 mm wrench, rotate belt tensioner clockwise (Fig. 2) until belt can be removed from power steering pump pulley. Gently, release spring tension on tensioner. 2. Remove the drive belt (Fig. 3). Clean all foreign debris from belt pulley grooves. The belt pulleys must be free of oil, grease, and coolants before installing the drive belt. INSPECTION Belt replacement under any or all of the following conditions is required: ^Excessive wear ^Frayed cords ^Severe glazing Poly-V Belt system may develop minor cracks across the ribbed side (due to reverse bending). These minor cracks are considered normal and acceptable. Parallel cracks are not (Fig. 6). NOTE: Do not use any type of belt dressing or restorer on Poly-V Belts. INSTALLATION NOTE: When installing drive belt on the pulleys, make sure that belt is properly routed and all V-grooves make proper contact with pulley grooves. POWER STEERING PUMP AND AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR BELT 1. Install the drive belt (Fig. 3) over all the pulleys except for the power steering pump pulley 2. TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove resonator from throttle body. Remove air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle. 4. Support engine assembly from above with Support Fixture (J-28467-B). See Fig. 1 . Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 2 . 5. Remove power steering hose clamp bolt, and position hose away from timing belt cover. Remove front timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 4 . Align camshaft sprocket timing marks with notches on valve cover. See Fig. 5 . 7. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. Use an Allen wrench to rotate tensioner and relieve tension on timing belt. See Fig. 6 . Install the timing belt. See Fig. 7 . Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise to tension the timing belt. Turn tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch on the rear timing belt cover. Tighten automatic tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Ensure timing belt tensioner pointer is still aligned with notch. 3. If timing belt tensioner is correctly aligned, install timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Install the engine mount bracket on the timing belt end of engine. Position power steering hose in place, and install clamp bolt. Install crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine accessory drive belt. 4. Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. Install air filter housing and resonator.

Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Place wooden block between jack and oil pan, and raise engine slightly. Remove engine mount assembly near timing belt cover. 2. Remove clamp for power steering return hose near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket. See Fig. 1 . Remove power steering and water pump pulleys. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove crankshaft pulley. 3. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket. Remove stub bolt of engine support bracket, and remove center timing belt cover. Remove lower timing belt cover. 4. Ensure camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprocket timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Move tensioner to relieve timing belt tension. Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. See Fig. 1 . 5. Remove plug from left side of cylinder block. Install a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver into the hole against balance shaft. See Fig. 4 . Screwdriver must go in at least 2.36″ (60 mm) or more. If screwdriver will only go in about .79-.98″ (20-25 mm) before striking balance shaft, turn sprocket one revolution and align timing mark. Keep screwdriver in place until timing belt is installed. This ensures balance shaft driven by oil pump sprocket remains in correct position. 6. To remove timing belt “B” (balance shaft belt), hold crankshaft sprocket stationary with a spanner wrench. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using gear puller, remove outer crankshaft sprocket. 7. Remove crankshaft sensing blade (if equipped). See Fig. 5 . Loosen timing belt “B” tensioner bolt. If reusing timing belt “B”, mark direction of belt rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt “B Inspection 1. Inspect timing belts for damaged teeth and cracking. Ensure belts are not contaminated with oil. Check tensioners for free rotation and grease leakage. Replace components if damaged or if grease leakage exists. 2. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Hold timing belt auto tensioner upright. Measure rod protrusion above edge of housing. See Fig. 6 . Length should be .47″ (12 mm). Apply 22-44 lbs. (10-20 kg) of force to end of rod. If auto tensioner rod moves more than 0.39″ (1 mm), replace the auto tensioner.

Removal 1. Remove radiator shroud, cooling fan and pulley. Remove all drive belts and crankshaft pulleys. Remove upper timing belt covers and gaskets. Note bolt length and location. 2. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt and washer. Rotate crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Align timing mark on camshaft sprocket with mark on cylinder head. See Fig. 5 . 3. Loosen timing belt tensioner adjustment bolt, and move tensioner toward water pump. Tighten bolt to secure tensioner. Remove front timing belt and tensioner. DO NOT rotate crankshaft after timing belt has been removed. 4. Remove camshaft sprocket (if necessary). Remove oil pump sprocket access plug from cylinder block. See Fig. 4 . Insert a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver to block left silent shaft. 5. Remove oil pump sprocket nut, and remove sprocket. Remove front crankshaft sprocket and flange. Note direction and order of installation for reassembly reference. 6. Remove rear timing belt tensioner assembly. Remove rear timing belt. Remove right silent shaft sprocket with spacer (if necessary). Remove rear crankshaft sprocket with key Installation 1. Install rear crankshaft sprocket and flange. Install right silent shaft sprocket and spacer. Spacer should be installed with chamfered end into oil seal. Align timing marks. See Fig. 5 . 2. Install rear tensioner. Hold tensioner tightly against belt while tightening bolts. Ensure deflection is .20- .28″ (5.0-7.1 mm). See Fig. 6 . Install camshaft sprocket. Tighten camshaft sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 3. Install front timing belt tensioner, tension spring and spacer. Ensure spring is properly engaged against water pump case. Rotate tensioner toward water pump, and temporarily tighten bolts. Ensure timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 5 . Install timing belt on crankshaft. 4. Apply pressure on tension side of timing belt while installing belt (in order) on crankshaft, oil pump and camshaft sprockets. Loosen tensioner to apply spring pressure to timing belt. 5. To apply tension to belt, rotate crankshaft clockwise until camshaft sprocket timing mark is offset by 2 teeth. Tighten tensioner bolt. Tighten tensioner spacer nut

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Using 16-mm spanner wrench, rotate serpentine belt tension arm clockwise about 14 degrees to relieve belt tension. Remove serpentine drive belt. Remove power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 . 2. Ensure timing marks of camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover are matching. See Fig. 5 . On Sedona, support engine with jack and remove engine mounting insulator. On all models, remove auto tensioner. See Fig. 3 . 3. Unbolt timing belt tensioner pulley, and remove timing belt. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Rotate crankshaft clockwise and align timing mark to set No. 1 cylinder to TDC on compression stroke. NOTE: If timing belt is to be reused, mark rotational direction on belt for reinstallation reference. CAUTION: If either camshaft is set at TDC for cylinder No. 1 at the compression stroke and the corresponding camshaft on the same cylinder head is rotated 180 degrees while the timing belt is removed, intake and exhaust valves may contact each other Inspection Inspect timing belt for wear on edges of drive teeth. Inspect the belt for signs of oil contamination, cracks, separation, worn or missing teeth, or hardened Black surface. Replace belt if worn, damaged or contaminated. Inspect belt tensioner pulley for smooth rotation. Replace if defective. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Replace if necessary. Installation 1. Install timing belt idler pulley to engine support lower bracket. Install tensioner arm, shaft and washer to cylinder block. Tighten tensioner arm bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Install crankshaft sprocket and align timing mark. See Fig. 4 . Install camshaft sprocket and adjust installation positions as shown. See Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 . Service Bulletin Front Seat Belt Replacement Warranty Policy (Supersedes 92-012, dated March 13, 1992) Warranty policy for front seat belt replacement is to replace either the belt/retractor mechanism or the buckle when either does not work properly. Warranty covers the replacement of the failed half of a belt, not the entire assembly (see PARTS INFORMATION ). NOTE: For 1970 through 1985 models, seat belts are replaced as a complete assembly under a separate warranty policy. COMPONENT REPLACEMENT Front seat belts are made by several suppliers, and some are sold as individual components (two separate halves); they are not stocked as a complete set. Therefore, whenever you replace a belt, make sure the new belt half is the same type and from the same manufacturer as the original – otherwise, the belt may not buckle properly. To determine the manufacturer and type (or “model”) of the belt, look for the white tag on the original belt in the car. The tag is on the retractor side of the belt (visible at the lower attachment point), or on the belt if you pull the belt all the way out. From the tag, mark down the manufacturer’s name (either Nippon Seiko K.K. or Takata), the belt “model” number and the date of manufacture. If the tag is missing or illegible, look on the buckle component for the name Nippon Seiko K.K. or the stylized “T” mark () for Takata. NOTE: Some belts may have NSK Warner K.K. as the manufacturer’s name. Use Nippon Seiko K.K. belts as the replacement. Take the information to your Parts Department to order the proper replacement belt.
