Manual A/C REMOVAL PROCEDURE CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 3. Remove the instrument panel storage compartment. 4. Disconnect the passenger side SIR. 5. Remove the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 6. Remove the left and right front speaker grilles. 7. Remove the center instrument panel sound insulator. 8. Remove the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 9. Disconnect the park brake release cable. 10. Remove the knee bolster. 11. Remove the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 12. Remove the BCM. 13. Disconnect the driver side SIR. 14. Remove the instrument panel cluster. 15. Remove the radio. 16. Remove the HVAC control assembly. 17. Remove the steering column retaining retaining nuts. 18. Lower the steering column. 19. Remove the instrument panel carrier. 20. Remove the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 21. Disconnect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 22. Remove the hood. 23. Remove the VCM. 24. Remove the coolant recovery tank. 25. Remove the heater hoses. 26. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the grille mounted lamps. 27. Remove the right front headlamp assembly. 28. Remove the front bumper. 29. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. 30. Disconnect the radio antenna cable. 31. Disconnect the electrical connector for the horn. 32. Remove the right fender. 33. Remove the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 34. Remove the blower motor resistor. 35. Remove the evaporator case bolts and screws. 36. Remove the accumulator. 37. Remove the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 38. Remove the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. 39. Pull back lightly on the heater case to remove the evaporator case. 40. Remove the evaporator case retaining screws. 41. Disassemble the evaporator case sections, and remove the evaporator core. NOTE: If replacing the evaporator core, remove the expansion (orofice) tube and install it into the new core. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Install the evaporator core. 2. Assemble the evaporator case sections. 3. Install the evaporator case retaining screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 in lb) . 4. Install the evaporator core assembly to the vehicle. 5. Install the bolts which retain the evaporator case to the bulkhead. Tighten the bolts to 4.5 N.m (40 lb in) . 6. Install the condenser to the evaporator line fitting. 7. Install the accumulator. 1998 Chevy Truck S10/T10 Blazer 2WD 8. Install the evaporator case bolts and screws. Tighten to 2.5 N.m (24 In in) . 9. Install the blower motor resistor. 10. Install the evaporator case heat shield, if equipped. 11. Install the right fender. 12. Connect the electrical connector for the horn. 13. Install the radio antenna cable. 14. Install the right wheelhouse panel. 15. Install the front bumper. 16. Install the right front headlamp assembly. 17. Connect the electrical connectors to the grille mounted lamps. 18. Install the heater hoses. 19. Install the coolant recovery tank. 20. Install the VCM. 21. Install the hood. 22. Connect the underhood lamp electrical connector, if equipped. 23. Install the left and right cowl vent grille panels. 24. Install the instrument panel carrier. 25. Reposition the the steering column, and install the steering column retaining nuts. 26. Install the HVAC control assembly. 27. Install the radio. 28. Install the instrument panel cluster. 29. Connect the driver side SIR. 30. Install the BCM. 31. Install the lower left instrument panel mounting bolt. 32. Install the knee bolster. 33. Connect the park brake release cable. 34. Install the left side instrument panel sound insulator. 35. Install the center instrument panel sound insulator. 36. Install the left and right front speaker grilles. 37. Install the lower right instrument panel mounting bolt. 38. Connect the passenger side SIR. 39. Install the instrument panel storage compartment. 40. Install the right side instrument panel sound insulator. 41. Connect the negative battery cable. 42. Inspect the system for leaks.

Removal Procedure 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the floor console. 3. Remove the sun sensor and the automatic temperature controls assembly. 4. Remove the tweeter speakers and the stereo cassette AM/FM radio. Refer to Section 9F, Audio Systems. 5. Remove the screws and the instrument panel storage compartment. 6. Remove the instrument cluster dimmer switch assembly. 7. Remove the instrument cluster. 8. Remove the chime module. 9. Remove the kick panels. 10. Remove the glove box. 11. Remove the screws and the glove box housing. 12. Disconnect the glove box housing electrical connectors. 13. Remove the knee bolster. 14. Lower the steering column. 17. Remove the screw behind the stereo cassette AM/FM radio. 18. Remove the screw securing the instrument panel to the heater air distributor case. 19. Remove the instrument panel bolts below the windshield. 22. Remove the bolts securing the bottom of the instrument panel to the floor. 23. Remove the instrument panel. Installation Procedure 1. Position the instrument panel in the vehicle. 2. Connect the instrument panel electrical connectors. NOTE: Dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other may corrode rapidly. Make sure to use the correct fasteners to prevent premature corrosion. 3. Install the bolts securing the sides of the instrument panel to the body. Tighten Tighten the instrument panel-to-body bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft) . 4. Install the bolts securing the bottom of the instrument panel to the floor. Tighten Tighten the instrument panel-to-floor bolts to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft) .

BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect blower motor resistor harness connector. Using DVOM, check for continuity between all blower motor resistor terminals. If continuity exists between all terminals, go to next step. If continuity does not exist between all terminals, replace faulty blower motor resistor. 2. Check for open or short in circuits between blower motor resistor and heater control panel. Also check for open or short in wire between blower motor resistor and blower motor. BLOWER MOTOR SWITCH 2000 Dakota, 2000 Durango & 2000-01 Ram Pickup 1. Remove Power Distribution Center (PDC) cover. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage at PDC fuse No. 5 (40-amp) on Dakota and Durango; PDC fuse No. 12 (40-amp) on Ram Pickup. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for open in Red wire between battery and underhood PDC. If Red wire is okay, replace underhood PDC. 2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect heater control panel cable, electrical and vacuum connectors as necessary. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel harness connector terminal No. 7 (Black wire on Dakota and Durango; Black/Orange on Ram Pickup) and ground. See Fig. 5 . If continuity exists, go to step 4 . 3. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire or Black/Orange wire between heater control panel 2001 Dodge Durango 2000-01 HEATER SYSTEMS’ ‘RWD Trucks & Vans harness connector terminal No. 7 and ground connector located at lower right corner of instrument panel (Dakota and Durango) or behind center of instrument panel (Ram Pickup). 4. Place heater mode control knob to any position except OFF. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel terminal No. 7 and terminals No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 while rotating blower motor switch. See Fig. 5 . 5. If continuity does not exist at any terminal, replace faulty heater control panel. If continuity exists as specified, check for open in circuits between heater control panel and blower motor resistor. Also check for an open in circuit between heater control panel and blower motor. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater control panel. See HEATER CONTROL PANEL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect heater control panel harness connectors. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel C3 harness connector terminal “C” (Black wire) and ground. See Fig. 6 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Black wire between heater control panel and ground connector located at lower right of steering column. 2. Place heater mode control selector to any position, except OFF. Using DVOM, check for continuity between appropriate terminals of heater control panel, for C3 connector terminals “B” (Violet wire) and “C” (Black wire). If continuity exists through heater control panel, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace faulty heater control panel assembly. 3. Using DVOM, check for continuity between heater control panel C3 connector terminal “B” (Violet wire) and C1 connector terminal “E” (Violet wire). See Fig. 6 . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Violet wire between heater control panel C3 and C1 connectors.

Instrument Panel Removal CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result. 1. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Section 211-04 . 2. Remove the passenger side air bag module. Refer to Section 501-20B . 3. Disconnect the antenna in-line connector. 4. Remove the RH instrument panel reinforcement bolt. 5. Close the glove compartment. 6. Remove the utility compartment. 1. Remove the four two part pin type retainers. 2. Remove the utility compartment. * Disconnect the power point electrical connector. 7. If equipped, disconnect the compact disc changer electrical connector. 8. Release the compact disc changer electrical connector locator. 9. Remove the LH and RH scuff plates. 10. Remove the LH and RH A-pillar lower trim panels. 11. Position the LH and RH front door weatherstrip seals aside. 12. Remove the RH ground bolts. 13. If equipped, remove LH and RH instrument panel lower insulators. 14. Remove the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Remove the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover. 15. Remove the instrument panel opening cover reinforcement. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the instrument panel opening cover reinforcement. 16. Disconnect the LH wiring harness electrical connectors. 17. Disconnect the electronic crash sensor (ECS) electrical connector. 1. Release the locking clip. 2. Disconnect the ECS electrical connector 18. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift cable. 1. Disconnect the cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Disconnect the cable from the steering column bracket. 19. Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column. 1. Remove the pinch bolt. 2. Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column. 20. Disconnect the climate control harness electrical connector. 21. Disconnect the climate control vacuum harness connector. 22. Disconnect the fuse junction panel electrical connectors. 23. Remove the LH instrument panel reinforcement bol 4. Remove the four instrument panel center support bolts. 25. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille. * If equipped, disconnect the sunload sensor electrical connector. 26. Remove the cowl top bolts. 27. Remove the RH cowl side bolts. 28. Remove the LH cowl side bolts. 29. NOTE: Two technicians are required to carry out this step. Remove the instrument panel. REMOVAL (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. (2) Remove the cluster bezel from the instrument panel. Refer to Cluster Bezel in the Removal and Installation section of Group 8E-Instrument Panel Systems for the procedures. (3) Remove the two screws that secure the radio receiver to the instrument panel (Fig. 4). (4) Pull the radio receiver out from the instrument panel far enough to access the instrument panel wire harness connectors and the antenna coaxial cable connector (Fig. 5). (5) Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connectors and the antenna coaxial cable connector from the receptacles on the rear of the radio receiver. (6) Remove the radio receiver from the instrument panel. (3) Position the radio receiver into the mounting hole in the instrument panel. (4) Install and tighten the two screws that secure the radio receiver to the instrument panel. Tighten the screws to 5 N·m (45 in. lbs.). (5) Install the cluster bezel onto the instrument panel. Refer to Cluster Bezel in the Removal and Installation section of Group 8E-Instrument Panel Systems for the procedures. (6) Reconnect the battery negative cable. REMOTE RADIO SWITCH WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIR- BAGS, REFER TO GROUP 8M-PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEMS BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR- BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. REMOVAL (1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. (2) Remove the driver sideairbagmodule from the steering wheel. Refer to Driver Side Airbag Module in the Removal and Installation section of Group 8M-Passive Restraint Systems for the procedures. (3) Remove the speed control switch located on the same side of the steering wheel as the remote radio switch that is being serviced. Refer to Speed Con- trolSwitches in the Removal and Installation sec- tionofGroup 8H-Speed Control System for the procedures. (4) Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness connector from the connector receptacle of the remote radio switch (Fig. 6). Trim Panels, Door Front Town Car The following procedure must be used during removal and installation of the door armrest and trim panel. Refer to the appropriate illustrations for component and vehicle model identification. Removal CAUTION: To avoid breakage of door pull cover(s), insert a screwdriver diagonally between pull strap and chrome bracket. Snap out both sides then remove. 1. Snap out two door pull strap retaining screw covers. Remove screws. 2. Remove two screws on front and rear side of front door trim panel. 3. Using the Trim Pad Removing Tool from Rotunda Moulding/Trim Kit 107-00401 or equivalent, pry the trim panel retaining clips from the door inner panel. NOTE: Do not use front door trim panel (23942) to remove trim clips from door inner panel. Replace any bent, damaged or missing push pins. 4. Remove window regulator control switch housing from back of front door trim panel . Lift up housing, remove retaining screws and disconnect all connectors. 5. Disconnect driver seat regulator control processor switch (driver door only) if equipped. 6. Twist out interior lamp wire assembly and remove the front door trim panel. Installation 1. Ensure plastic watershield is secured to door panel. 2. Position front door trim panel to door. Connect interior lamp wiring. 3. Position the window regulator control switch housing and connect switch connectors. 4. Connect driver seat regulator control processor (14C708) (driver door only) if equipped. 5. Align door lock side to its mating slide on the sheet metal (front doors only) 6. Snap in front door trim panel . Ensure all retainers fit properly. 7. Install two retaining screws on front and rear side of front door trim panel . 8. Install two retaining screws and pull strap covers. Removal 1. Remove outside rear view mirror remote control unit. 2. Remove window regulator control switch housing by gently prying up, starting at the front. 3. Disconnect all connectors from window regulator control switch housing. 4. Remove inside door handle cup (22634) by gently prying at screwdriver slot with a screwdriver. 5. Remove push pin from front door trim panel upper front extension and remove screw. 6. Remove lower self-tapping screw retaining front door trim panel to door inner panel. 7. On Grand Marquis only, pry up screw covers from door pull handle and remove screws and handle. 8. Lift front door trim panel upward and snap out trim panel. 9. Disconnect wire harnesses from door panel as required and remove front door trim panel . Installation 1. Connect wire harnesses to front door trim panel as required. 2. Install front door trim panel by pushing in and down until it snaps into place. 3. Install all self-tapping screws retaining front door trim panel to door inner panel. 4. On Grand Marquis only, install door pull handle, tighten screws and install screw covers. 5. Install push pin covering screw on trim panel upper front extension. 6. Install inside door handle cup . 7. Install window regulator control switch housing.

Instrument Panel Removal 1. If equipped with power seats, move the seat fully rearward. 2. Remove the passenger air bag. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B . 3. Remove the driver air bag. For additional information, refer to Section 501-20B . 4. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, move the shift lever to the 1 position to ease removal. Carefully pry to release the (A) clips and remove the (B) steering column opening cover. 5. Position the electrical connector aside. * Release the push clip from the lower instrument panel steering column cover (044F08). 6. Pull to release the three (A) clips and remove the (B) fuse door. 7. Position the hood latch release handle aside. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Position the hood latch release handle aside. 8. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 1. Remove the screws. 2. Position the parking brake release handle aside. 9. If equipped, remove the instrument panel floor duct panel. * Remove the two push clips and release the expander clip. 10. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover (04459). 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the lower instrument panel steering column cover. 11. Remove the LH and RH scuff plates. 12. Remove the LH and RH cowl side trim panels. 13. Disconnect the brake pedal position (BPP) switch electrical connector. 14. Remove the (A) radio ground and the (B) GEM/CTM ground bolts. 15. Disconnect the LH instrument panel main harness connectors. 16. Remove the bulkhead wiring harness electrical connectors from inside the engine compartment. 1. Loosen the bolts. 2. Disconnect the bulkhead electrical connectors. 17. Remove the bulkhead electrical connector from the dash panel. 1. Release the six locking tabs. 2. Remove the bulkhead connector from the dash panel. 18. Disconnect the air bag diagnostic monitor electrical connectors. 19. Disconnect the inertia fuel shutoff switch electrical connector. 20. Remove the RH ground bolts. 21. Disconnect the RH instrument panel main harness connectors. 22. Disconnect the electronic blend door actuator electrical connector. 23. Disconnect the climate control head vacuum harness connector. 24. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement (04502). 1. Remove the nuts. 2. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. 25. Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors and the anti-theft sensor electrical connector.

NOTE: The headliner is removed through the rear passenger door. To facilitate removal, the front passenger seat must be removed. Remove the front passenger seat. For additional information, refer to Section 501-10 . All vehicles 3. Remove the overhead console. For additional information, refer to Section 501-12 . 4. Remove the A-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to A-Pillar Trim Panel in this section. 5. Position the B-pillar upper trim panel aside. For additional information, refer to B-Pillar Upper Trim Panel in this section. Explorer and Mountaineer only 6. Remove the C-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to C-Pillar Trim Panel — Explorer, Mountaineer in this section. 7. Remove the D-pillar trim panel. For additional information, refer to D-Pillar Trim Panel in this section. Explorer Sport Trac 8. Position the C-pillar upper trim panel aside. For additional information, refer to C-Pillar Upper Trim Panel — Explorer Sport Trac in this section. All vehicles 9. Remove the gimp around the roof opening panel, if equipped. 10. Remove the 4 sun visor retainer screws. 11. Remove the sun visors. 12. Carefully lower the headliner at the corner of the sun visor location to access the electrical connector and disconnect the electrical connector. 13. Disconnect the roof opening panel, if equipped. 14. Disconnect the interior mirror electrical connector and electronic compass sensor connector, if equipped. 15. Use a thin-blade tool and carefully remove the dome lamp cover. 16. Disconnect the dome lamp electrical connectors. Explorer and Mountaineer only 17. Remove the upper air duct. * Remove the pin-type retainers. * Push down on the duct, tilt the top outward and pull upward to remove. 18. Remove the lower air duct. 19. Disconnect the electrical connector located at the C-pillar. * Release the wiring harness pin-type retainers. 20. Disconnect all the electrical connectors. All vehicles 21. Disconnect the electrical connector and the wiring pin-type retainers on the A-pillar. 22. CAUTION: To prevent bending or damaging the headliner, an assistant is required to support the headliner while carrying out the remaining steps. Open the sun visor center retainer cover and remove the screw. 23. Remove the sun visor center retainer. 24. Remove the rear pin-type retainer. 25. CAUTION: To prevent damaging the garment hanger retainer, use a 3/16-inch flat-blade screwdriver to carry out this step. NOTE: The garment hanger is shown without the roof sheet metal screw to show the metal retainer clip. The metal retainer clip will remain engaged in the sheet metal after the garment hanger is removed. Remove the garment hangers. 1. Open the access door. 2. Insert the flat-blade screwdriver fully into the garment hanger slot. 3. Rotate the screwdriver 90 degrees so that the screwdriver spreads the metal retainer clip. Remove the plastic garment hanger. 26. NOTE: The headliner is removed through the passenger rear door for Explorer Sport Trac. Remove the headliner. 27. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal Note: If a new instrument cluster is being installed connect WDS. Upload the instrument cluster configuration information using the programmable modules installation routine prior to commencing the removal of the instrument cluster. µ 1. Remove the instrument panel lower panel. 1 Remove the retaining screws. 2 Release the retaining clips. µ 2. Detach the audio control switch from the steering column lower shroud (if equipped). z Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the locking tang. µ 3. Remove the audio control switch (if equipped). z Disconnect the electrical connector. µ 4. Detach the steering column upper shroud. 1 Using a thin bladed screw driver, release the two clips (one each side). 2 Detach the shroud. µ 5. Remove the steering column upper shroud. µ 6. Remove the steering column lower shroud. µ 7. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel retaining screws. (Steering wheel shown removed for clarity). µ 8. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel. µ 9. Remove the instrument cluster retaining screws and detach the instrument cluster. µ 10. CAUTION: The instrument cluster must be kept upright to avoid silicone liquid leaking from the gauges. Remove the instrument cluster. 1 Release the locking tang. 2 Disconnect the instrument cluster electrical connector. Installation Note: If a new instrument cluster is being installed connect WDS. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Remove two console armrest mounting access covers (047A62) at rear of console panel (045A36) (snaps out) to gain access to armrest retaining bolts. 3. Remove four armrest-to-floor bracket retaining bolts and remove armrest assembly (snaps out of console). 4. Remove console panel gear shift plate (044G24) (snaps out). On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, shift boot is attached to bottom of finish panel. Remove shift knob and slide boot and console panel gear shift plate up shift lever to remove. 5. To remove top finish panel position emergency brake lever in the UP position. Remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up. Disconnect necessary wire connectors. 6. Remove two console-to-rear floor bracket retaining screws. 7. Insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out. 8. If the vehicle has a radio chassis (18806) , the radio chassis must be removed. Refer to Section 15-01 . If the vehicle doesn’t have a radio chassis , use a small screwdriver and pry radio cover finish panel out of console. 9. Flex glove compartment bin tabs inward. Drop down glove compartment (06010) assembly. Remove two console-to-instrument panel retaining screws. 10. Remove four console bracket retaining screws. Remove console panel from vehicle. 11. Remove three bolts retaining steering column opening cover (3A673) and reinforcement panel. Remove cover. 12. Remove steering column opening reinforcement by removing two bolts. 13. Remove two bolts retaining steering column opening reinforcement and remove reinforcement. 14. Remove six steering column retaining nuts (two retaining the hood release mechanism and four retaining column to lower brake pedal support). Lower steering column to floor. 15. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds (3530) and disconnect wiring from turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) . 16. Remove steering column through bolt and nut on engine compartment side of cowl panel. Remove steering column from vehicle. 17. Remove brake pedal support nut. 18. Snap out instrument panel defroster opening grille (044E82) . 19. Remove screws from speaker covers. Snap out speaker covers. 20. Remove front screws retaining RH and LH scuff plates at cowl side trim panels. 21. Remove RH and LH cowl side trim panels. 22. Disconnect wiring at RH cowl side. 23. Remove cowl side retaining bolts (one each side) . 24. Remove five cowl top screws attachments. 25. Gently pull instrument panel (04320) away from RH side of cowl panel. Disconnect speedometer cable, air conditioning controls and wire connectors. 26. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the heater water hose connections at the cowl panel. 27. Disconnect heater water hoses (18472) from heater core tubes and plug heater water hoses with suitable 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch plugs. Cap heater core tubes to prevent coolant loss from heater core (18476) during removal of heater case. 28. Remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case support bracket (19A639) to cowl top panel. 29. Disconnect vacuum supply supply hose (black) from A/C vacuum supply in engine compartment.
