Certain 2004 – 2006 Model Year Sienna vehicles equipped w/Power Back Door (Rear Liftgate) Q1: What is the condition? A1: Toyota has determined that the gas struts used to help lift and support the Power Rear Liftgate in certain 2004 through 2006 model year Sienna vehicles could be wearing out sooner than expected. As the gas struts deteriorate, the performance of the Power Rear Liftgate will begin to degrade, and the Power Rear Liftgate will operate more slowly than when the gas struts were new. Only Sienna vehicles equipped with the Power Rear Liftgate are involved. Q2: Are there any warnings that this condition exists? A2: Owners may notice that the Power Rear Liftgate will not remain in the open position. If not repaired, the gas struts may not be able to support the weight of the liftgate when it is open, and eventually, the gas struts could deteriorate to the point that the liftgate will fall about ten inches after it reaches the fully open position, at which point the power motor will engage and power the liftgate to the fully closed position. This condition may cause injury to a person who is struck by the liftgate when it falls or when it is closing. Q3: When were these vehicles produced, and how many vehicles are involved? A3: Only certain 2004 through 2006 model year Sienna vehicles equipped with the Power Rear Liftgate, produced between January 2003 and December, 2006 are involved. Removing the Door Panel Coverings 1. For ease of installation, do both sides at the same time. 2. Roll the windows to approximately 1/2 open, and so the crank handle is in the Down Position. With either the Crank Spring Removal Tool, or a flat Screwdriver, remove the spring, located in a slot on the back of the crank. 3. Remove the cover plate for the remote-control mirror, which is held in place by 3 spring clips. Remove by gently pulling the front corner of the cover out, and then slide the cover back. 4. Remove the door Pull-handle cover, by inserting a screwdriver into the access hole on the bottom of the handle, and using the screwdriver as a lever, pop off the handle cover. 5. Remove the button covering a retaining screw in the interior door latch backing plate. 6. Remove the 8 Torx™ retaining screws around the perimeter of the door panel, and the single Torx™ retaining screw in the interior door latch. 7. Remove the 2 hex bolts in the door handle. 8. Gently lift the panel upwards, to disengage the window weather-strip molding. 9. Remove the Door Latch Trim Panel, be sure to unplug the Power Lock Switch, and remember how the wire was run. 10. Remove the interior door latch, by gently pulling out on the front corner, which is held in by a plastic compression spring. 11. Remove the Foam Arm Rest bolster, by unclipping the 4 plastic compression clips and the clip fasteners.. 12. Remove the 4 Door Speaker screws, and disconnect the speaker. 13. Gently remove the closed cell Foam Cover from the doorframe, by pulling out, while cutting the rubber cement around the cover. Remove all but the front edge of the cover. This cover tears very easily, so use extreme care. B. Removing the Manual Window Regulator 1. Temporarily re-attach the crank handle, and roll the window so that clamps (6, 7) on window are accessible through the voids in the door frame. 2. Loosen the glass clamp nuts (or bolts). 3. Roll the window all the way up, and lock in place by inserting a screwdriver into the small access hole at the top of the doorframe. 4. Remove the 4 Hex bolts (1, 2, 3) Before removing the last bolt (4), take up the weight of the glass, and remove the last bolt. Gently let the glass rest on the screwdriver. 5. Remove the manual regulator and tracks. C. Installing the Electric Window Regulator 1. Align and install the Hex bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, and nut 5) 2. Loosen the glass clamp nuts (or bolts). 3. Gently let the glass rest in the Clamps. 4. Lightly tighten the glass clamp nuts (or bolts).

Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the LH front wheel/tire assembly. 4. Remove the LH lower splash shield. 5. Removal Procedure 1. Lower the window to the full down position. 2. Remove the door trim panel . Remove the radio speaker. Refer to Speaker Replacement – Front Door in Entertainment. 4. Remove the water deflector in order to access the window regulator. Refer to Water Deflector Replacement – Front Door ( See: Body and Frame\Doors, Hood and Trunk\Front Door Panel\Service and Repair\Front Door Panel Components\Water Deflector Replacement – Front Door ) . 5. Disengage the door glass to the regulator sash channel clips (2). Separate the door glass from the sash channel (1). 6. Push the window to the up position and tape in place. 7. Loosen the power window regulator bolts. Remove the rear regulator bolt. 8. Lift the window regulator, disengaging the loosened bolts from the door. 9. Disconnect the regulator electrical connector. 10. Remove the power window regulator from the door. Installation Procedure 1. Loosely install the four forward fasteners into the window regulator. 2. Position the power window regulator in the door. 3. Connect the door window regulator electrical connector. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices. 4. Install the power window regulator bolts. Tighten the regulator bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in). 5. Remove the tape from the window. Push the window down to the regulator sash channel. 6. Slide the glass sash clips (2) into the window regulator sash channel (1). 7. Install the water deflector. Lifting a vehicle does cause the center of gravity to rise and rollover may become easier, always avoid situations where a rollover may occur and always wear seat belts. Larger tires will cause braking performance to decrease. Mixing of brands and lift components is not recommended. 1. Park vehicle on level ground and take before measurements to use for reference when adjusting the height on the new keys. LF___ RF___ LR___ RR___ 2. Block the rear wheels and jack up the front of the vehicle and support with jack stands on the frame so the front wheels are off the ground. 3. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies using 22mm socket. 4. Measure the torsion key adjuster bolts for reference points for later reinstallation. Left Side____ Right Side____ (Figure1) Figure1 Figure2 5. Remove the adjuster bolts from the torsion key keeper using 21mm socket and save for later reinstallation. (Figure 2) 6. Using the torsion key unload tool (figure3) or a ball joint press can also be used, (figure4) carefully unload the torsion key and remove the keeper.

Sometimes the keys rust weld to the bar the use of an air hammer and striking the back of the bar thru an access hole in the back of the torsion bar cross member. This usually breaks the bars free from the keys. 8. Install new keys onto the bars in the same location as the old ones were located on the bar. 9. Now that the suspension is unloaded the shock extenders will need to be installed. 10. Remove the lower shock bolt and nut using 21mm socket and 21mm wrench and save for reinstallation. Push the shock up out of the way and install shock extender. Use stock bolt to mount the extender to the control arm shock mount. (Figures 5 & 6)
