TIMING & BALANCE SHAFT BELTS Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Position crankshaft with cylinder No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. See Fig. 1 , Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Disconnect battery negative cable. Remove splash shield. Remove cruise control actuator, leaving cable connected. Remove power steering pump, leaving hoses connected. 2. Disconnect alternator wiring. Remove wiring harness from valve cover. Remove alternator and A/C belts (if equipped). Remove valve cover and upper timing belt cover. Remove side engine mount. Remove engine oil dipstick and tube. Remove crankshaft pulley. See Fig. 4 . 3. Support engine. Remove 2 rear bolts from engine center support beam. Lower engine enough to permit removal of lower timing belt cover. Remove rubber seal from belt tension adjuster nut. Remove lower timing belt cover. Inspection With belt or belt covers removed, inspect belts for wear, cracks, or oil soaking. Inspect belt teeth for wear. Replace belt if worn, oil soaked, or cracked. Installation 1. Align White mark on flywheel or drive plate (flexplate) with pointer on block. Ensure camshaft(s) is at TDC for No. 1 cylinder. See Fig. 1 , Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Install camshaft timing belt. See Fig. 6 . Align rear timing balance shaft belt pulley by inserting a 6 x 100 mm bolt 2.9″ (74 mm) into alignment access hole. Align groove on front balance shaft pulley with pointer on oil pump body. See Fig. 7 . 2. Adjust timing belt tension by rotating crankshaft counterclockwise until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Loosen, but do not remove, timing belt adjustment bolt. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on camshaft pulley to create tension on timing belt. Tighten adjustment bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 3. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Adjust drive belts to proper tension

Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Place wooden block between jack and oil pan, and raise engine slightly. Remove engine mount assembly near timing belt cover. 2. Remove clamp for power steering return hose near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket. See Fig. 1 . Remove power steering and water pump pulleys. Rotate crankshaft clockwise so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove crankshaft pulley. 3. Remove upper timing belt cover and gasket. Remove stub bolt of engine support bracket, and remove center timing belt cover. Remove lower timing belt cover. 4. Ensure camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprocket timing marks are aligned. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Loosen tensioner pulley center bolt. Move tensioner to relieve timing belt tension. Remove timing belt. Remove timing belt auto tensioner. See Fig. 1 . 5. Remove plug from left side of cylinder block. Install a .31″ (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver into the hole against balance shaft. See Fig. 4 . Screwdriver must go in at least 2.36″ (60 mm) or more. If screwdriver will only go in about .79-.98″ (20-25 mm) before striking balance shaft, turn sprocket one revolution and align timing mark. Keep screwdriver in place until timing belt is installed. This ensures balance shaft driven by oil pump sprocket remains in correct position. 6. To remove timing belt “B” (balance shaft belt), hold crankshaft sprocket stationary with a spanner wrench. Remove crankshaft sprocket bolt. Using gear puller, remove outer crankshaft sprocket. 7. Remove crankshaft sensing blade (if equipped). See Fig. 5 . Loosen timing belt “B” tensioner bolt. If reusing timing belt “B”, mark direction of belt rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt “B Inspection 1. Inspect timing belts for damaged teeth and cracking. Ensure belts are not contaminated with oil. Check tensioners for free rotation and grease leakage. Replace components if damaged or if grease leakage exists. 2. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Hold timing belt auto tensioner upright. Measure rod protrusion above edge of housing. See Fig. 6 . Length should be .47″ (12 mm). Apply 22-44 lbs. (10-20 kg) of force to end of rod. If auto tensioner rod moves more than 0.39″ (1 mm), replace the auto tensioner.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 . 2. Remove the brake disc. For additional information, refer to Section 206-04 . 3. Index-mark the driveshaft flange and pinion flange for correct alignment during installation. 4. Remove the 4 driveshaft flange bolts. 5. NOTE: The driveshaft centering socket yoke fits tightly on the pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft centering socket yoke from the pinion flange. Pry only in the area shown with a suitable tool to disconnect the driveshaft centering socket yoke from the pinion flange. Using a suitable tool as shown, disconnect the driveshaft centering socket yoke from the pinion flange. ? Using mechanic’s wire, position the driveshaft aside. 6. Using a Nm (lb-in) torque wrench on the pinion nut, record the torque required to maintain rotation of the pinion gear through several revolutions. 7. Using the special tool to hold the pinion flange, remove and discard the pinion nut.2005 F-150 Workshop Manual 8. Index-mark the pinion flange in relation to the drive pinion stem to make sure of correct alignment during installation. 9. Using the special tool, remove the pinion flange. 10. Force up on the metal flange of the drive pinion seal. Install gripping pliers and strike with a hammer until the drive pinion seal is removed. Installation 1. Lubricate the new drive pinion seal with grease. 2. Using the special tool, install a new drive pinion seal. 3. Lubricate the pinion flange splines with axle lubricant. 4. NOTE: Disregard the scribe marks if a new pinion flange is being installed. Align the pinion flange with the drive pinion shaft. 5. Using the special tool, install the pinion flange. 6. l a new pinion nut with the same iginal if not replacing the collapsible spacer. If a installed, install the nut in the kit, as indicated in the chart below, or damage to the component may occur. Position the new pinion nut. Pinion Nut 7. no circumstances ut to be backed off to reduce drive pinion bearing preload. If reduced drive pinion bearing preload is required, a new drive pinion collapsible spacer and pinion nut must be installed or damage to the component may occur. NOTE: Remove the special tool while taking drive pinion bearing preload readings with the Nm (lb-in) torque wrench. Using the special tool to hold the pinion flange, tighten the pinion nut. ? Rotate the drive pinion occasionally to make sure the drive pinion bearings are seating correctly. ? Install a Nm (lb-in) torque wrench on the pinion nut. ? Rotating the drive pinion through several revolutions, take frequent drive pinion bearing preload readings until the original recorded drive pinion bearing preload reading is obtained. ? If the original recorded drive pinion bearing preload is lower than specification, tighten to the appropriate specification for used drive pinion bearings. If the drive pinion bearing preload is higher than specification, tighten the pinion nut to the original reading as recorded. For additional information, refer to the Specification portion of this section. 8. Position the driveshaft and align the index mark on the pinion flange.

Removal Procedure 1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle ( See: Maintenance\Vehicle Lifting\Service and Repair ). 2. Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation ( See: Maintenance\Wheels and Tires\Service and Repair ). 3. Remove the left outer tie rod from the steering knuckle. Install the new O-ring (2) on the intermediate shaft. 2. Install the new retaining ring (1) on the intermediate shaft. 3. Apply a small amount of grease GM P/N 01051344 (Canadian P/N 993037) or equivalent to the intermediate wheel drive shaft splines. 4. Install the left front wheel drive shaft in the intermediate shaft. 5. To ensure that the wheel drive shaft is installed properly, grasp the inner tripod housing and pulling it outward. DO NOT pull on the axle shaft . 6. Install the wheel drive shaft in the front knuckle. 7. Install the left upper control arm on the knuckle. Remove bolt securing front pipe to bracket and remove front pipe. Discard gasket. 13. Remove 3 screws securing LH splash shield and remove shield 14. Release HO2S lead from clip on cylinder block. Remove 4 nuts securing exhaust manifold to cylinder head, remove manifold and discard gasket. 15. Drain fluid from IRD. 16. Drain gearbox fluid. 17. FitLRT-54-026 to the RH drive shaft inboard joint. 18. Using a suitable lever, release drive shaft from IRD. 19. With assistance, pull hub outwards and release drive shaft from IRD. CAUTION: Care must be taken not to damage oil seal when removing drive shaft from IRD. CAUTION: To avoid damage to gaiter or joint, do not allow shaft to hang on joint. 20. Remove LRT-54-026 from RH drive shaft inboard joint.
