AIRFLOW MODE ACTUATOR INSPECTION Full-auto Air Conditioner 1. Connect battery positive voltage to terminal E or F and ground to terminal F or E of the airflow mode actuator. 2. Verify that the airflow mode actuator operates as shown. * If not as specified, replace the airflow mode actuator 3. Verify that the resistance between the terminals of the airflow mode actuator is as shown in the graph. * If not as specified, replace the airflow mode actuator. Manual Air Conditioner Operating inspection 1. Turn the fan switch to OFF. 2. Turn the mode dial to VENT. 3. Turn the ignition switch to ON position, (engine ON) 4. Turn the fan switch 4th position. 5. Turn the mode dial from VENT to DEFROSTER. 6. Verify that the airflow mode actuator moves smoothly. * If not as specified, inspect the airflow mode main link and sub link for clogging and deformity. * If the actuator cannot move at all, go to voltage inspection. Voltage inspection 1. Disconnect the airflow mode actuator connector. 2. Turn the ignition switch to ON position, (engine OFF) Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print 3. 1. Look at the BARO PID. Refer to the Barometric Pressure Reference Chart in this article. At sea level, BARO should read about 159 Hz (29.91 in. Hg). As a reference, Denver, Colorado at 1524 meters (5000 ft.) altitude should be about 144 Hz (24.88 in.Hg). Normal learned BARO variability is up to +/- 6 Hz (+/- 2 in. Hg.). If BARO indicates a higher altitude than you are not at (7 or more Hz lower than expected), you may have MAF contamination. If available, Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) has a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor that can be used as a barometric pressure reference. Use “MAP/BARO” test under “Powertrain,” “Testers and Meters.” Ignore the hookup screen. Connect GP2 to the reference MAP on the following screen. 2. On a fully warmed up engine, look at Long Term Fuel Trim at idle, in Neutral, A/C off, (LONGFT1 and/or LONGFT2 PIDs). If it is more negative than -12%, the fuel system has learned lean corrections which may be due to the MAF sensor over-estimating air flow at idle. Note that both Banks 1 and 2 will exhibit negative corrections for 2-bank system. If only one bank of a 2-bank system has negative corrections, the MAF sensor is probably not contaminated. 3. On a fully warmed up engine, look at MAF voltage at idle, in Neutral, A/C off (MAF V PID). If it’s 30% greater than the nominal MAF V voltage listed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Diagnostic Value Reference Charts for your vehicle, or greater than 1.1 volts as a rough guide, the MAF sensor is over-estimating air flow at idle. 4. If at least tow of the previous three steps are true, proceed to disconnect the MAF sensor connector. This puts the vehicle into Failure Mode and Effects Management (FMEM). In FMEM mode, air flow is inferred by using rpm and throttle position instead of reading the MAF sensor. (In addition, the BARO value is reset to a base/unlearned value.) If the lean driveability symptoms go away, the MAF sensor is probably contaminated and should be replaced. If the lean driveability symptoms do not go away, go to the PC/ED Service Manual for the appropriate diagnostics.

1) First perform an indicator check to see if all the lights are working properly. Press and hold the AUTO & REC buttons and then start the car. Release the buttons after the car has started. All the lights should light up and go off 4 times in a row at one second intervals. You should also hear a beep as the indicators light up. After the indicators blink 4 times you’re in A/C diagnostic mode. 2) Read the code displayed on the LCD. Here you see a code 21; this can happen if you’re not in light because it refers to the solar sensor. 3) Here’s what normal will look like, code 00. When the codes are displayed they blink and beep. Here are all the codes that can be displayed……… Code – Meaning 00 – Normal 11 – Open or short in room temperature sensor circuit. 12 – Open or short in ambient temperature sensor circuit. 13 – Open or short in evaporator temperature sensor circuit. 14 – Open or short in water temperature sensor circuit. 21* – Open or short in solar sensor circuit. 22* – Compressor motor locked. And/or, open or short in compressor lock sensor circuit. 31 – Open or short in air mix damper position sensor circuit. 32 – Open or short in air inlet damper position sensor circuit. 33 – Open in air mix damper position sensor circuit. Or, open or short in air mix servomotor circuit. Or, air mix servomotor locked. 34 – Open in air inlet damper position sensor circuit. Or, open or short in air inlet sensor servomotor circuit. Or, air inlet servomotor locked. * – These are detected only when they are the current troubles. Other codes detect both current trouble (beep) and past trouble (no beep). A/C indicator light blinks – This means your A/C compressor is locked. It’s happened to me before and I needed a new (rebuilt) compressor installed. 4) Once you’ve read any codes you can proceed to performing an actuator check by pressing the REC button. This will start a check of different combinations for the system starting with code 20 and moving up to 29. To cancel this or the previous diagnostic modes simply press the OFF button.

connected to the vehicle, the TBC module will enter a “sleep mode” but still continue to send a PWM voltage signal to the trailer tow connector every 4 seconds to detect when a trailer is connected. When the ignition key is in the RUN position and the module is in sleep mode, pressing a gain button or sliding the manual switch will cause the module to “wake up”. If a trailer is not connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds, then the trailer icon should illuminate red and the IC message center should display TRAILER DISCONNECTED or CHECK TRAILER. If a trailer is connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds and then the trailer icon should illuminate green. Inspection and Verification NOTE: A trailer brake emulator tool is available to verify that the TBC module and vehicle wiring are functioning correctly. 1. Verify the TBC system is correctly installed by checking that the vehicle is equipped with a brake pressure transducer on the master cylinder. If the brake pressure transducer is not present, then the TBC system has been erroneously installed. 2. Verify the customer concern. 3. NOTE: The TBC does not function with electric-over-hydraulic or surge trailer brake types. Verify that the trailer brakes are electric-actuated drum type brakes. 4. Verify the stoplamps operate correctly by applying and releasing the brake pedal with the ignition switch in the OFF position and the trailer disconnected. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to Section 417-01 . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step. 5. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart 6. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: * check that the program card is correctly installed. * check the connections to the vehicle. * check the ignition switch position. 7. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual. 8. Carry out the scan tool data link test. If the scan tool responds with: * CAN, ISO, or UBP circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 . * No response/not equipped for the TBC, GO to Pinpoint Test A . * System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the TBC and the antilock brake system (ABS) module. 9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart to continue diagnosis. 10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart to continue diagnosis. NOTE: Always retrieve the continuous DTCs after running the self-test.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable 2. Install the male end of the J 38758 to the negative battery terminal. 3. Turn OFF the test switch. 4. Install the negative battery cable to the female end of the test switch. 5. Install the Scan Tool (or equivalent) or wait for 20 minutes. 6. Turn ON the test switch. 7. Road test the vehicle while activating all accessories, including the radio and the air conditioning. 8. Lower the door glass, then exit the vehicle. Do not move the door handle after closing the door. 9. Open the hood. Important The power down timer will reset to 20 minutes if any wake up inputs are received by a Class 2 device (after the scan tool has put all Class 2 devices to sleep). 10. Put all of the Class 2 devices into the sleep mode. 11. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Remove the key. Important From this point on, electrical continuity must be maintained in the ground circuit of the battery through the Test Switch J 38758 in the ON position or through the ammeter J 39200 . 12. Components such as PCM, VCM, Automatic Air Conditioning, and the Truck Body Control Module have timers that draw several amps of current while they cycle down. This can give a false parasitic drain reading. Wait 20 minutes for these components to power down before continuing this test (or use the scan tool to put all Class 2 devices to sleep). 13. Connect a jumper wire with a 10 A fuse J 36169-A to the terminals of the test switch. 14. Turn the test switch to the OFF position. 15. Wait ten seconds. If the fuse does not blow, the current is less than 10 A. The ammeter can be used safely. 16. Before the fused jumper wire is removed, turn the test switch to the ON position. Important If an ammeter other than the J 39200 is used, ensure that the vehicle does not have a high current drain that would damage the ammeter when connected to the circuit. 17. Perform the following procedure in order to detect a high current drain: A. Set the ammeter J 39200 to the 10 A scale. B. Connect the ammeter to the test switch terminals. C. Turn OFF the test switch. This allows the current to flow through the ammeter. D. Wait one minute, then inspect the current reading. Ñ When there is a current reading of 2 A or less, turn ON the test switch, this maintains continuity in the electrical system. Ñ Then, switch the meter down to the 2 A scale, for a more accurate reading, when the test switch is reopened. E. Open the test switch. F. Take the reading in milliamps. G. Note the battery reserve capacity. Refer to Battery Usage . Ñ Divide this number by 4. Example: 90/4 = 22.5 Ñ Compare this to the ammeter reading. Ñ The current drain in milliamps should not exceed this number. Ñ Example: if a battery has a reserve capacity of 90 minutes, the current drain should not exceed 22 milliamps. H. When the current draw is too high, remove the electrical system fuses one at a time until the draw returns to a value less than or equal to specifications. Ñ Start with the fuses that are hot all the time. Ñ To remove the fuse, you must first open the door, which causes a high enough current flow to damage the ammeter. Ñ Protect the ammeter, without disturbing the electrical continuity, by turning ON the test tool before opening the door. Ñ Remove the courtesy lamp fuse. Ñ Note the ammeter reading. Ñ If the parasitic load is still excessive, start removing the remaining fuses one at a time. Ñ Keep the courtesy lamp fuse out during diagnosis, so the door can remain open. Ñ Perform Steps 11 through 13 each time a fuse is removed. I. Removing the PCM or VCM fuse should cause a drop of less than 10 milliamps. A drop greater than 10 milliamps indicates a possible short to ground. J. Check the orange wires along with the components connected to the orange wires. No drop in the milliampere reading indicates the PCM or VCM is not drawing current. K. Repeat the parasitic current drain test procedure after any repair has been completed. L. When the cause of the excessive current draw has been located and repaired, remove the ammeter and the parasitic draw test switch.
