NOTE: It is necessary to plug the hydraulic lines immediately with plugs 129 589 91 07 and the connections with plugs 129 589 00 91 11. Hydraulic cylinder remove on main bracket from inside of vehicle and lay down in soft top compartment (fig. 8) Hydraulic lines on hydraulic cylinder remove (fig. 8) NOTE: Plug the hydraulic lines immediately with plugs 129 589 00 91 07, the connections on the distributors and hydraulic cylinders with plugs 129 589 00 91 11. Screws screw out (fig. 8, item 8) and remove limit switch (item 9) from hydraulic cylinder NOTE: Check limit switches after completing vehicle and adjust, if required. Cylinder Head Replacement * Tools Required * J28467-360 Engine Support Fixture * J36660-A Torque Angle Meter. Removal Procedure 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. 3. Drain cooling system . 4. Remove the alternative fuel module assembly. Remove the drive belt . 5. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct and resonator assembly. 6. Support engine using floor jack and block of wood. 7. Remove the engine mount . 3. Remove the intake manifold . 9. Remove the exhaust manifold 10. Disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor ( ECT ) electrical connection. 11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Important: When removing valve train components keep them in order. Do this to ensure that the components are installed in the same locations and with the same mating surfaces as when removed. 12. Remove the rocker arms and pushrods. 13. Remove the generator. 14. Remove the generator rear brace. 15. Remove the power steering pump. Position the pump aside with the lines attached. 16. Remove the radiator inlet pipe. 17. Remove the ignition coil assembly. 18. Remove the accessory bracket. 19. Disconnect the secondary ignition wires from the spark plugs . 20. Remove the cylinder head bolts. 21. Remove the cylinder head. 22. Clean the following components: * Head gasket surface * Valve rocker arm cover gasket surface * Threads Installation Procedure Important: Install the cylinder head gasket with the words THIS SIDE UP showing. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TIMING BELT Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Using 16-mm spanner wrench, rotate serpentine belt tension arm clockwise about 14 degrees to relieve belt tension. Remove serpentine drive belt. Remove power steering pump pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley and crankshaft pulley. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers. See Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 . 2. Ensure timing marks of camshaft sprocket and cylinder head cover are matching. See Fig. 5 . On Sedona, support engine with jack and remove engine mounting insulator. On all models, remove auto tensioner. See Fig. 3 . 3. Unbolt timing belt tensioner pulley, and remove timing belt. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Rotate crankshaft clockwise and align timing mark to set No. 1 cylinder to TDC on compression stroke. NOTE: If timing belt is to be reused, mark rotational direction on belt for reinstallation reference. CAUTION: If either camshaft is set at TDC for cylinder No. 1 at the compression stroke and the corresponding camshaft on the same cylinder head is rotated 180 degrees while the timing belt is removed, intake and exhaust valves may contact each other Inspection Inspect timing belt for wear on edges of drive teeth. Inspect the belt for signs of oil contamination, cracks, separation, worn or missing teeth, or hardened Black surface. Replace belt if worn, damaged or contaminated. Inspect belt tensioner pulley for smooth rotation. Replace if defective. Check timing belt auto tensioner for leaks. Replace if necessary. Installation 1. Install timing belt idler pulley to engine support lower bracket. Install tensioner arm, shaft and washer to cylinder block. Tighten tensioner arm bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Install crankshaft sprocket and align timing mark. See Fig. 4 . Install camshaft sprocket and adjust installation positions as shown. See Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 . Removal Both cylinder heads 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information , refer to Section 100-02 . 2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section 310-00 . 3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 4. Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold in this section. 5. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 . 6. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section 303-05 7. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — LH in this section. 8. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to Valve Cover — RH in this section. 9. Disconnect the generator electrical connections. 10. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner. 11. Remove the bolts and the generator and generator mounting bracket as an assembly. 12. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. 13. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers. 14. Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connectors. 15. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube fitting. 16. Remove the upper heater coolant hose. 1. Squeeze the heater hose clamp. 2. Remove the heater coolant hose. 17. Remove the lower heater coolant hose and position aside. 1. Remove the bolt. 2. Squeeze the hose clamp. 3. Remove the heater coolant hose and position aside. 18. NOTE: The coolant hose will be removed with the thermostat housing. Move the coolant bypass hose clamp off the water pump outlet. 19. Remove the bolts, the thermostat housing and the bypass hose. 20. Remove the bolt and detach the wiring harness retainer. 21. Remove the bolts and position the accessory drive bracket aside.22. Detach the wiring harness retainer. 23. Remove the bolt and the oil level indicator tube. 24. Using the special tool, disconnect the LH spark plug wires from the spark plugs. 25. Disconnect the fuel pulse damper vacuum connector. 26. Remove the four bolts and position the fuel supply tube aside. 27. Remove the bolts and the fuel rail and injectors as an assembly.28. NOTE: Mark each of the roller followers to make sure it is installed in its original position during reassembly. Use the special tool to remove the roller followers. 29. Remove the lower radiator hose. 30. Remove the nut and position the A/C tube bracket aside. 31. Using the special tool, set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). RH cylinder head 32. Remove the RH fenderwell splash shield. 33. Remove the RH camshaft chain tensioner.

REPAIR PROCEDURE: VALVE ROTATION: 1. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECTunder: Service Info>14-Fuel System>Fuel Delivery >Standard Procedure>Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure. 2. Remove upper intake manifold. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECTunder: Service Info >9-Engine>Manifolds>Intake Manifold> Removal. 3. Remove cylinder head cover(s). Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECTunder: Service Info >9-Engine>Cylinder Head>Cylinder Head Cover(s) >Removal. 4. Remove rocker arm and shaft assembly. Refer to the detailed service information available in TechCONNECT under: Service Info >9-Engine>Cylinder Head> Rocker Arm/Adjuster Assembly >Removal). 5. Clean and mark the tip of each exhaust valve stem at the 12 O’clock position witha paint marker. The paint mark will be used later to assist with determining the amount of valve rotation. 6. Remove the sparkplugs. 7. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, until the number 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. 8. Install the compression tester sparkplug adapter in cylinder#1 sparkplug hole. With air hose attached to sparkplug adapter, apply 620.5 to 689 kPa (90 to 100 psi) air pressure. This is to hold valves into place while servicing components. 9. Using Tool MD 998772A (1) with adapter 6527 (4) or equivalent, slightly compress the exhaust valve spring to release tension against the valve and valve spring retainer ( Fig. 1 ). 10. Remove the valve spring retainer locks and discard the locks. NOTE: It is important that the valve rotation section of this repair procedure be performed.
