1995 Nissan-Datsun 200SX Timing Chain/ Front Cover Revised Procedure

Removal 1. Set # 1 piston at TDC on its compression stroke. 2. Remove the spark plug wires. 3. Remove the rocker cover (see Figure 1). 4. Remove the coolant reservoir tank with bracket and reposition it for clearance. 5. Support the engine with a suitable jack. 6. Remove cylinder head front mounting bracket. 7. Remove engine front mounting, then the engine front mounting bracket. 8. Remove cylinder head front cover 9. Remove the upper chain tensioner (see Figure 2). 10. Wipe off the links of the upper timing chain next to the timing marks on the sprockets. Put paint marks on the timing chain, matching them with the timing marks on the cam sprockets and idler sprocket (see Figure 3) 11. Remove the four (4) front cover to cylinder head bolts. 12. Remove side and lower engine compartment splash covers. 13. Remove the accessory drive belts. 14. Remove the crankshaft pulley. 15. Drain coolant by removing the cylinder block drain plug and opening the radiator drain cock (Refer to MA section of the Service Manual). 16. Drain engine oil. 17. Remove intake manifold support of engine front side. 18. Remove power steering pump, pump bracket and tension rod. Position pump aside for clearance. 19. Remove the thermostat housing (See Figure 4) 20. Remove the lower chain tensioner (see Figure 5). 21. Remove the front exhaust tube. Refer to the “FE” section (Exhaust System) of the Service Manual. 22. Remove the front and rear engine gussets (if equipped) on either side of the oil pan. NOTE: On A/T models, remove the rear plate cover. 23. Remove the oil pan (see Figure 6). a. Insert the Tool between the cylinder block and oil pan. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating face. Do not insert a screwdriver, or the oil pan flange will become damaged. b. Slide the Tool by tapping it on the side of the Tool with a hammer. 24. Remove the A/C compressor and position it aside for clearance. 25. Remove the A/C and alternator bracket with the alternator. 26. Remove the oil pump drive spacer. CAUTION: Be careful not to scratch the drive spacer when removing it. 27. Remove the front cover bolts and front cover. CAUTION: One bolt is located on the water pump (see Figure 7). *1: Located on engine front mounting bracket. *2: Located on the water pump. *3: Located on the power steering oil pump adjusting bar. CAUTION: Be careful not to tear or damage the cylinder head gasket. 28. Remove the cylinder block to front cover alignment dowels. CAUTION: Do not hit the dowels or the cylinder block will crack. 29. Wipe off the links of the lower timing chain next to the timing marks on the sprockets. Put paint marks on the timing chain, matching them with the timing marks on the idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket (see Figure 8). Installation 1. Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the mating marks face the front of the engine. 2. Install the idler sprocket and lower timing chain using the mating marks and the paint marks made during the removal process. CAUTION:

installation Notes NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to align the timing components without the OE tools specified. 1. Compress the tensioner plunger, using an edge of a vise. CAUTION: Timing chain procedures must be followed exactly or damage to valves and pistons will result. Do not compress the ratchet assembly. This will damage the ratchet assembly. 2. Use a small screwdriver or pick to push back and hold the ratchet mechanism 3. While holding the ratchet mechanism, push the ratchet arm back into the tensioner housing. 4. Install a paper clip into the hole in the tensioner housing to hold the ratchet assembly and plunger in during installation. 5. Remove the tensioner from the vise. 7. If the copper links are not visible, mark two links on one end and one link on the other end, and use as timing marks. 8. Loosely install the Camshaft Holding Tools on both camshafts 9. Install the timing chain guides . 10. Rotate the LH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 12 o’clock. Rotate the RH camshaft with the Camshaft Positioning Tool until the timing mark is approximately at 11 o’clock. Tighten the Camshaft 11. Position the crankshaft with the Crankshaft Holding Tool. CAUTION: Unless otherwise instructed, at no time when the timing chains are removed and the cylinder heads are installed is the crankshaft or camshaft to be rotated. Severe piston and valve damage will occur. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise only. Do not rotate past position shown or severe piston and/or valve damage can occur. 12. SERVICE PROCEDURE Write down all radio station presets. Presets 1 2 3 4 5 6 A B C 2. Disconnect both battery cables, negative cable first. 3/5 NTB07-042c 3. Remove the secondary timing chains. Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) if needed. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the valve covers or intake collector. • Before removing the crankshaft pulley, set it to 0° Top Dead Center (TDC). • Use Tool J-50288 to secure the flywheel / flex plate when removing the crankshaft pulley and camshaft sprockets (no picture shown). NOTE : The camshaft sprockets’ bolts will be removed and installed while being held by all three (3) timing chains. • If the crankshaft is determined to be 360° off from 0° TDC on #1 cylinder compression stroke after removing the front timing chain case (front cover), put the crankshaft pulley back on, and then rotate the crankshaft 360° (when camshaft and crankshaft sprocket mating marks are aligned). ove the Secondary Timing Chain 4. Rem Tensioner Shoes (shoe) by evenly prying with a couple pocket screwdrivers or suitable tool where shown in Figure 1. NOTE: Leave the pins from Tool J-50246 in each tensioner until the timing chains are installed. Install the new shoes to the tensioners with Tool J-50246 (see Figure 2). 5. • fully seated. Install the new secondary timing chains. Refer to the ESM as needed. 7. Reassemble the rest of the engine and vehicle. Refer to the ESM as needed. • Make sure all three (3) pins are removed before installing the front cover. 8. Install the battery cables, negative cable last. 9. Reprogram the radio presets. 10. Reset / initialize all applied systems i.e., power windows, clock, sunroof, etc


Removal 1. Remove upper radiator crossmember. Disconnect fan assembly connector. Remove fan assembly. Remove drive belts. Using Crankshaft Pulley Holder (8191), hold crankshaft pulley and remove center bolt. Using a 3-jaw puller, remove crankshaft pulley. 2. Remove upper intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove electrical and vacuum harness retaining clips from valve cover studs. Remove ignition coils. Remove valve covers. Remove power steering pump and set aside. Remove drive belt tensioner pulley and bracket. Remove timing chain cover. 3. Align crankshaft sprocket timing mark to mark on oil pump housing. Mark on oil pump housing is 60 degrees ATDC of number one cylinder. See Fig. 10

1. Disconnect the speed/timing connector “P9/J9″ (2) . Inspect the connector for the following conditions. * Corrosion * Bent pins * Missing pins * Damaged sockets * Mismating * Broken wires 2. Remove the Speed/timing sensor (1) from the front gear cover. 3. Examine the plastic end of the sensor for signs of wear or contaminants such as metal filings. The plastic end of the speed/timing sensor should have no contaminants and should show no wear (greater than 0.051 mm (0.0020 inch) from the face) . 4. Use a screwdriver to carefully pry the plastic sensor end to the fully extended position (approximately 4.775 mm (0.1880 inch) beyond the metal housing of the sensor). 5. Gently push in on the plastic end of the sensor. The plastic end should be firm. The plastic end should resist movement in the retract direction. If there is no resistance replace the sensor 6. Remove the two bolts (3) and remove the cover (5) from the flywheel housing. This hole is used for engine turning. 7. Put one bolt (3) in the timing bolt location (4) . The timing bolt location is approximately 127 mm to 152 mm (5 inch to 6 inch) above the hole in the flywheel housing for engine turning. I 8. Use 9S-9082 Engine Turning Tool (6) and a 1/2 inch drive ratchet wrench to turn the engine flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation. The normal engine rotation is in a counterclockwise direction when viewed from the flywheel end. Turn the engine flywheel until the timing bolt engages with the threaded hole in the flywheel. Note: Visually check the location of the tooth on the wheel on which the speed/timing sensor is to be positioned. The end of the sensor must be in alignment with a tooth on the wheel and not in alignment with the valley of the wheel. Note: The No. 1 piston must be at either top center of the compression stroke or at top center of the exhaust stroke. 9. Inspect the speed/timing sensor before installation. Use steps 3 through step 6 to inspect the sensor. 10. If the sensor end is not fully extended, use a screwdriver to carefully pry the plastic sensor end to the fully EXTENDED position approximately 4.775 mm (0.1880 inch) beyond the metal housing of the sensor.
