EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE SERVICE INFORMATION ^LAMP – “EMISSIONS/CHECK ENGINE” – EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE – SERVICE INFORMATION LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-89 BRONCO 1985-87 BRONCO II 1985-89 ECONOLINE, F- 150, F-250, F-350 1985-88 RANGER 1986-87 AEROSTAR ISSUE: The Emission Maintenance Warning “EMW” module operates a light that is located on the instrument panel. For 1985-87 model year vehicles, the light will display the word “EMISSIONS”. For 1988-89 model year vehicles, the light will display the words “CHECK ENGINE”. When the light is lit, it is indicating that the 60,000 mile emission maintenance should be performed. After the maintenance is performed the EMW module must be reset to zero time. Another type of module is the “IMS” module. This module is not part of the light circuit and does not require maintenance. At a predetermined time, the IMS module directs the EEC IV processor to make a strategy change. A third type of module is the “COMBO” module. This module combines the functions of the IMS and the EMW modules. ACTION: Refer to the following module application charts for the specific vehicle application and location of the different types of modules. NOTE: FOR APPLICATIONS NOT LOSTED IN THE FOLLOWING MODULE APPLICATION CHARTS, THE “CHECK ENGINE” LIGHT IS CONTROLLED BY THE EEC IV PROCESSOR. THESE VEHICLES DO NOT USE THE “EMW” MODULE

PROBLEM The IMA system indicator comes on and IMA DTC 77 (P1447) (battery module deterioration) or DTC 78 (P1449) (battery module deterioration) is set. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the battery module. If needed, replace the motor control module (MCM), the battery condition monitor (BCM), or both INSPECTION PROCEDURE 1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). 2. Remove the cargo floor mat (see page 20-44 of the 2000-04 Insight Service Manual). (In ISIS, use the keyword FLOOR MAT , and select Interior Trim Removal/Installation – Cargo Area from the list.) 3. Remove the battery module switch cover (two bolts), then remove the locking cover from the switch. 4. Flip the battery module switch to OFF . Reinstall the locking cover. 5. Wait at least 5 minutes to let the capacitors in the system discharge. 6. Remove the right trunk shelf support (five clips and two bolts). 7. Remove the six mid-frame cover bolts. Remove the intelligent power unit (IPU) lid (17 bolts). 8. Measure the voltage at the junction board terminals. There should be 30 V or less . If you read more than 30 V , there is a problem in the circuit; do the DTC troubleshooting first. SWITCH COVER LOCKING COVER BOLTS LOCKING COVER BATTERY MODULE SWITCH IPU LID RIGHT TRUNK SHELF SUPPORT BOLTS (17) CLIPS CLIPS BOLTS ON JUNCTION BOARD TERMINALS REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Remove the battery module from the vehicle (see page 12-113 of the service manual). (In ISIS, use the keyword BAT MOD , and select Battery Module Removal/Installation from the list.) 2. Remove the lifting tool from the battery module. 3. Remove the mounting bolts for the MCM and the BCM (eight total). Unplug the electrical connectors (five for the MCM and three for the BCM), then remove the modules. 4. Install the MCM and the BCM in the new battery module. Use the original MCM and BCM if no replacement was needed; otherwise, use the appropriate replacement parts. Torque the mounting bolts to 9.8 N·m (7.2 lb-ft) . 5. Install the lifting tool on the battery module. 6. With someone to help you, carefully lift the battery module into the vehicle, and set it down into position. Remove the lifting tool. 7. Plug in the connectors, and install the Y condenser harness. Then install the mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 24 N·m (17 lb-ft) . 8. Install the battery module air duct. Torque the bolt to 9.8 N·m (7.2 lb-ft) . 9. Connect the high voltage cables to the junction board. Torque the bolts to 9.8 N·m (7.2 lb-ft) . 10. Install the front and rear IPU braces and the mid- frame. Torque the bolts to 9.8 N·m (7.2 lb-ft) . connected to the vehicle, the TBC module will enter a “sleep mode” but still continue to send a PWM voltage signal to the trailer tow connector every 4 seconds to detect when a trailer is connected. When the ignition key is in the RUN position and the module is in sleep mode, pressing a gain button or sliding the manual switch will cause the module to “wake up”. If a trailer is not connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds, then the trailer icon should illuminate red and the IC message center should display TRAILER DISCONNECTED or CHECK TRAILER. If a trailer is connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds and then the trailer icon should illuminate green. Inspection and Verification NOTE: A trailer brake emulator tool is available to verify that the TBC module and vehicle wiring are functioning correctly. 1. Verify the TBC system is correctly installed by checking that the vehicle is equipped with a brake pressure transducer on the master cylinder. If the brake pressure transducer is not present, then the TBC system has been erroneously installed. 2. Verify the customer concern. 3. NOTE: The TBC does not function with electric-over-hydraulic or surge trailer brake types. Verify that the trailer brakes are electric-actuated drum type brakes. 4. Verify the stoplamps operate correctly by applying and releasing the brake pedal with the ignition switch in the OFF position and the trailer disconnected. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to Section 417-01 . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step. 5. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart 6. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: * check that the program card is correctly installed. * check the connections to the vehicle. * check the ignition switch position. 7. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual. 8. Carry out the scan tool data link test. If the scan tool responds with: * CAN, ISO, or UBP circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 . * No response/not equipped for the TBC, GO to Pinpoint Test A . * System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the TBC and the antilock brake system (ABS) module. 9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart to continue diagnosis. 10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart to continue diagnosis. NOTE: Always retrieve the continuous DTCs after running the self-test.

The installation of this accessory should follow approved guidelines to ensure a quality installation. These guidelines can be found in the “Accessory Installation Practices” document. This document covers such items as:- • Vehicle Protection (use of covers and blankets, cleaning chemicals, etc.). • Safety (eye protection, rechecking torque procedure, etc.). • Vehicle Disassembly/Reassembly (panel removal, part storage, etc.). • Electrical Component Visassembly/Reassembly (battery disconnection, connector removal, etc.). Please see your Toyota dealer for a copy of this document. 1. Vehicle Disassembly. (a) Remove the negative battery cable. (Fig. 1-1) (1) Protect the fender before starting. (2) Do not touch the positive terminal with any tool removing the cable. (b) Remove the glove box under-dash cover. (Fig. 1-2) (c) Remove the passenger’s step cover. Install the IPC. Ensure everything is connected properly. The replacement IPC requires SPS Programming and IPC Setup procedures to be performed. It does not matter which procedure is performed first. 2. Start the engine and then select IPC Setup. You must have the engine running before performing the IPC Setup. 3. Select IPC Setup. With the engine running, enter the appropriate mileage and engine hours. 4. Select “OK”. Review the pop up asking you to verify the mileage and engine hours. Move the pop up out of the way if necessary to view the verification screen. This may require a click and drag of the dialog box. 5. Verify that the mileage and engine hours are correct and select “OK”. DO NOT turn the ignition OFF until the engine has “run” for approximately seven (7) minutes. Allowing the engine to idle for this period of time allows the IPC to accumulate 1/10th of an hour and write the correct engine hour value to the permanent memory. The engine must be running before set up is performed and run for approximately seven minutes after the user selects “OK” confirming their mileage/engine hour inputs. After approximately seven minutes, shut the engine OFF and complete the event. The seven minute clock starts after you select “OK”, confirming the entries. Note: Based on feedback from technicians, we are currently making changes to the “IPC Setup” application which will include several enhancements to the set up screens. These are scheduled to be released and available in TIS2WEB very soon. Important: Only IPC conditions listed in the Condition section of the bulletin are covered under this special coverage program. In a small number of vehicles, the condition may be intermittent and the gauge sweep test may not always verify the condition. IPC Performance IPC performance may be affected by the following conditions: Customer Comments and Observations Customers who describe gauge performance as jumpy, sticky, slow or erratic. Gauge performance may also be described as being inoperative or inaccurate. For example, for a period of time the speedometer may appear to move normally but be inaccurate and not return to zero (0) after the vehicle comes to a stop. This inaccurate condition may be more or less pronounced during the drive cycle and may, for a time, return to normal operation. A Tech 2 sweep test may not reveal the condition. 1. Perform a gauge sweep test to determine/verify that an IPC gauge is sticking, stuck, or inoperative. Using the Tech 2, navigate to the following screens to perform the gauge sweep test: Body -> Instrument Panel Cluster -> Special Functions -> IPC Gauges -> Display(s) Test. • Cold temperatures • Temperature fluctuations • High humidity • Driving over rough surfaces such as dirt roads or potholes

Cause Water shock occurs when water droplets are present in the exhaust. The water in the exhaust contacts the sensor element inside the HO2 sensor, causing the HO2 sensor element to crack. Correction Upon diagnostic investigation, the technician may find that the HO2 sensor requires replacement. In addition to replacing the affected HO2 sensor, these vehicles should also be reflashed with the latest PCM calibration. An updated PCM calibration will be available to dealerships as part of TIS 2000 incremental satellite update 11.0 (NAO version 25.010) or greater. Always, make sure your Tech 2 is updated with the latest software version
