Certain 2004 – 2006 Model Year Sienna vehicles equipped w/Power Back Door (Rear Liftgate) Q1: What is the condition? A1: Toyota has determined that the gas struts used to help lift and support the Power Rear Liftgate in certain 2004 through 2006 model year Sienna vehicles could be wearing out sooner than expected. As the gas struts deteriorate, the performance of the Power Rear Liftgate will begin to degrade, and the Power Rear Liftgate will operate more slowly than when the gas struts were new. Only Sienna vehicles equipped with the Power Rear Liftgate are involved. Q2: Are there any warnings that this condition exists? A2: Owners may notice that the Power Rear Liftgate will not remain in the open position. If not repaired, the gas struts may not be able to support the weight of the liftgate when it is open, and eventually, the gas struts could deteriorate to the point that the liftgate will fall about ten inches after it reaches the fully open position, at which point the power motor will engage and power the liftgate to the fully closed position. This condition may cause injury to a person who is struck by the liftgate when it falls or when it is closing. Q3: When were these vehicles produced, and how many vehicles are involved? A3: Only certain 2004 through 2006 model year Sienna vehicles equipped with the Power Rear Liftgate, produced between January 2003 and December, 2006 are involved. Approximately 196,000 vehicles are involved nationwide.

Using the right arrow key, toggle the VVTi actuator “ON.” 5. If at this point the vehicle does not run rough and/or stalls when the active test is performed, proceed with Repair Manual P1349 VVTi Fault Isolation Procedure (FIP). If the vehicle does stall and/or runs rough, this indicates the the VVTi control system is operating. Proceed to replace the VVTi actuator following the repair procedures listed on the Technical Information System (TIS): Engine Mechanical Section, Camshaft, Replacement The camshaft timing gear should come in the unlocked position from the factory. If it is difficult to install the camshaft timing gear, the lock pin may be engaged. To disengage the lock pin, apply and hold approximately 20 psi of air pressure at the oil feed hole located 90 degrees clockwise of the oval slot. (See Figure 1.) Once the pin has released, turn the interior assembly counterclockwise. (See black arrow in Figure 1.) B. Put the camshaft timing gear assembly and the camshaft together with the straight pin off the key groove. C. Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly (as shown in Figure 2) while pushing it lightly against the camshaft. Push further at the position where the pin fits into the groove. NOTE: Be sure not to turn the camshaft timing gear to the retard angle side (in the clockwise direction). D. Check that there is no clearance between the end of the camshaft and the camshaft timing gear. E. Tighten the camshaft bolt with the camshaft timing gear fixed. Torque: 54 Nm (551 kgfcm, 40 ftlbf) F. Check that the camshaft timing gear assembly can move to either side and is not locked

The ATF level gauge (dip-stick) has been discontinued, and the ATF inspection method and the oil level inspection method have been changed. This mechanism consists of a refill plug, overflow plug, ATF temperature sensor No.2, and A/T OIL TEMP temperature warning light. ATF Filling procedures using SST (09843-18020): When a large amount of ATF needs to be filled (i.e. after removal and installation of oil pan or torque converter), perform the procedure from step 1. When the small amount of ATF is required (i.e. removal and installation of the oil cooler tube, repair of oil leak), perform the procedure from step 7. 1) Raise the vehicle keeping it level. 2) Remove the refill plug and overflow plug. 3) Fill ATF from the refill plug until it overflows from the overflow plug. 4) Install the overflow plug. 5) Fill the specified amount of ATF determined by procedure and install the refill plug. Example 6) Lower the vehicle down. 7) Use the SST (09843-18020) to short the terminals Tc and CG of the DLC3 connector: 8) Start the engine and allow it to idle. A/C switch must be turned OFF. 9) Move the shift lever slowly through each of the positions from the P to the L position, and move it back to the P position. 10) Move the shift lever from the D position, and quickly move then back and forth between N and D (once per less than 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate the oil temperature detection mode. Standard: The A/T OIL TEMP warning light remains illuminated for 2 seconds and it goes off. 11) Return the shift lever to the P position and disconnect the terminal Tc. 12) Idle the engine to raise the oil temperature. 13) Immediately after the ATF OIL TEMP warning light turns on, lift the vehicle up. The A/T OIL TEMP warning light will indicate the ATF temperature according to the following table. (Insert table here) 14) Remove the overflow plug and adjust oil quantity. If the ATF overflows, go to step 17, and if the ATF does not overflow, go to step 15. 15) Remove the refill plug. 16) Fill ATF to the refill plug until it flows out from the overflow plug. 17) When the ATF flow slows to a trickle, install the overflow plug. 18) Install the refill plug (only if the refill plug has been removed). 19) Lower the vehicle down. 20) Turn the ignition switch OFF to stop the engine. TROUBLE SHOOTING NOTE: See TROUBLE SHOOTING – BASIC PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. 1) If a no-start condition exists and battery is known to be good, connect test light or voltmeter between starter solenoid terminal No. 50 and ground. See Figs. 6 and 7. 2) Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light or voltmeter does not indicate voltage, check main fusible links and large ampere main fuses in engine compartment relay box. If fusible links and fuses are okay, see IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST and/or STARTER RELAY TEST under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. ON-VEHICLE TESTING NOTE: Before testing, ensure battery is fully charged, battery cables and terminal ends are tight and clean, and engine grounds are secure. CLUTCH START SWITCH TEST 1) Switch is located above clutch pedal on bracket. Disconnect wiring harness connector from switch. 2) Connect ohmmeter probes to switch terminals. Depress clutch pedal. If continuity does not exist, adjust or replace clutch start switch. If continuity exists, check circuit to starter relay for open, and check starter relay. See STARTER RELAY TEST. CLUTCH START CANCEL SWITCH TEST 1) Locate switch in left dash panel. Remove right lower instrument panel to access switch connector. Disconnect wiring harness connector from switch pigtail connector. See Fig. 1. 2) Connect negative lead of ohmmeter to terminal No. 1. Ensure continuity does not exist between connector terminals No. 1 and 2, terminals No. 1 and 3, and terminals No. 2 and 3. Check operation of switch by connecting jumper wires from 12-volt battery. Connect positive lead to terminal No. 3 and negative battery lead to terminal No. 1. 3) Using ohmmeter, ensure continuity does not exist between connector terminals No. 1 and 2 until switch button is pushed. When switch button is pushed, switch light should come on and continuity should exist. Disconnect battery and ensure continuity does not exit between terminals No. 1 and 2. IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. For 1996 4Runner, see AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. 1995 1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Removedriver’s lower instrument panel cover. Remove upper and lower steering column covers if needed. Locate ignition switch wiring harness 8-pin connector. See Figs. 2-3. 2) With ignition switch in LOCK position, there should be no continuity between any terminals. With ignition switch in ACC position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 2 and 3. With ignition switch in ON position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 2 and 3, and between terminals No. 7 and 8. 3) With ignition switch in START position, there should be continuity between terminals No. 1, 4 and 6, and between terminals No. 7 and 8. If continuity is not as specified, replace switch.

1. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector, Fig. 211 2. NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument. Service Check Connector 3. Idle Speed : 800 rpm Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley, Fig. 223 5. Ignition Timing: 10°BTDC at idle Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing. 6. Remove service wire. 7. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed. 8. Ignition Timing: 8°BTDC at idle Check idle speed and adjust if necessary, COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS. 9. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine. 10. Timing Belt Removal Notes Fan Shroud Removal & Installation Remove radiator fan upper and lower shrouds. 1. Installing Power Steering Pump And Belt Remove power steering pump drive belt and pump. 2. Disconnect No. 2 and No. 3 air hoses from air pipe. 3. 4. Fan Removal Remove alternator drive belt , cooling fan, belt guide and fan pulley. 5. Remove No. 2 timing belt cover. 6.
