INITIAL VISUAL INSPECTION 1. Place the vehicle on a suitable lift. 2. Visually inspect the parking brake cable installation, parking brake caliper levers and general condition of the brakes. • Ensure the caliper levers are returning fully to their stops. • Confirm the cable routing is correct • Confirm that the cable is securely fixed at all abutment points and is free to move within the C-clip. • Where cable routing goes over the top of the stabilizer bar drop links, confirm that the stabilizer bar rubber deflector blocks are fitted, and that the brake cables have not been getting trapped behind the stabilizer bar drop links (look for tell-tale marks on the links and/or cables). NOTE: Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > Model > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 2: Chassis — Section 206: Brake System NOTE: Refer to the correct section by reference to VIN and based on whether the vehicle is fitted with high performance brakes or not. 3. Rectify any obvious faults. 4. If no obvious faults are found or further guidance is needed to rectify faults, please proceed to the next stage of this bulletin. Refer to GTR Sections 206-05 (parking Brake and Actuation) and GTR Section 206-04 (Rear Disc Brake). 5. If any faults were found and rectified, it will be necessary to re-calibrate the parking brake after rectification. See ‘Parking Brake Calibration’ procedure. PREPARE THE PARKING BRAKE FOR DETAILED INSPECTION CAUTION: Jaguar IDS DVD 111 or later and Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis. 1. Install the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply to the vehicle. 2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle. 3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration. 4. Select ‘YES’ when prompted ‘Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?’. 5. Follow all on-screen instructions to complete this task. 6. Select ‘Vehicle Configuration’ tab when the ‘Content Model’ is displayed. 7. Select ‘Electronic Parking Brake’. 8. Select ‘Release to Service Position’ (S-TYPE/XJ) or ‘Parking Brake Unjam Procedure’(XK) ‘. CAUTION: When using the special service tool, take care to operate in the ‘release’ direction. Actuator motor damage may result if the tool is operated in the ‘apply’ direction for any length of time). 9. If the parking brake will not release using IDS, use the special service tool to fully release the parking brake. Refer to GTR Section ‘Parking Brake Cable Tension Release’ (in Section 206-05) for details of using the special service tool.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS Removal & Installation 1. Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove front wheel assemblies. Remove lower lock pin/guide bolt. See Fig. 2 . Pivot caliper upward and support using rope. 2. Remove pads, shims, guide plates or pad guides and “V” springs (if equipped). Replace pad if lining thickness is less than specified. See MINIMUM PAD LINING SPECIFICATIONS (FRONT) table. 3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use Disc Brake Expander (49-0221-600C) and an old pad to push piston fully inward to install disc pads. (mm) MX-6, 626 FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER Removal & Installation Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove front wheel assemblies and disconnect brake hose. Plug all openings. Remove front disc brake pads. See FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS . Remove remaining mounting bolt(s). Remove caliper from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Bleed air from system. FRONT BRAKE ROTOR Removal & Installation 1. Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove front wheel assemblies. Remove front disc brake caliper with brake hose connected. See FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER . Wire caliper aside. Remove rotor-to-hub screws (if equipped). Remove rotor. 2. Machine rotor if lateral runout exceeds specification. Replace rotor if measured thickness is less than specified minimum thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS table. To install, reverse removal procedure. REAR DISC BRAKE PADS Removal & Installation 1. Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove rear wheel assemblies. Release parking brake and disconnect parking brake cable from caliper. Remove manual adjustment gear concealment plug from caliper. See Fig. 3 . Insert an appropriate size Allen wrench through hole and turn manual adjustment gear counterclockwise to retract caliper piston. 2. Remove upper guide bolt from caliper. Rotate caliper downward and support using wire. Remove “M” springs. Remove pads, shims and guide plates. Replace pad if lining thickness is less than .04″ (1.0 mm). 3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Turn manual adjustment gear clockwise until brake pads slightly touch rotor. Turn manual adjustment gear back 1/3 turn.

Line Pressure Check Procedure Tools Required Important: Before performing a line pressure check, verify that the pressure control (PC) solenoid valve is receiving the correct electrical signal from the PCM. Caution: Keep the brakes applied at all times in order to prevent unexpected vehicle motion. Personal injury may result it the vehicle moves unexpectedly. J 21867Universal Pressure Gauge Set 1. Install a Scan Tool. 2. Start the engine and set the parking brake. 3. Check for a stored Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). 4. Repair the vehicle, if necessary. 5. Check the fluid level. Refer to the Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure. 6. Check the manual linkage for proper adjustment. 7. Turn the engine OFF. Remove the oil pressure test hole plug and install the J 21867. 8. Put the gear selector in PARK range and set the parking brake. 9. Start the engine and allow the engine to warm up at idle Notice: Total test running time should not be longer than two minutes, or else transmission damage could occur. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices. Parts Information 10. Access the PC solenoid valve control test on the Scan Tool. Zoom Sized for Print 11. Increase the PC solenoid as shown actual current from 0.0 to 1.0 amps in 0.1 amp increments. Allow the pressure to stabilize for five seconds after each pressure change. Read the corresponding line pressure on the J 21867. 12. Refer to the Line Pressure specification table. Compare the data to the table. 13. If pressure readings differ greatly from the table, refer to Incorrect Line Pressure. 14. Remove the J 21867. 15. Apply sealant, P/N 12345382 (in Canada, P/N 10953489), to the oil pressure test hole plug. 16. Install the oil pressure test hole plug. Tighten Tighten the oil pressure test hole plug to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

Removal WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer’s specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury. WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label. For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake fluid to come in contact with the adhesive backing on the brake pads. If brake fluid is spilled onto the brake pads, new pads must be installed. CAUTION: Use only specified brake parts cleaner. Use of other cleaners may leave a residue on the brake caliper preventing the brake pads adhesive surface from bonding with the brake caliper. 1. Remove the wheel and tire. 2. Check the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. * If required, remove fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full. 3. Remove the brake caliper bolts. 4. CAUTION: Do not use the brake caliper sight hole to retract the pistons as this may damage the pistons and boots. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose or damage to the hose may occur. CAUTION: Care must be taken when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever. Carefully position the caliper aside using a suitable support or damage to the parking brake cable end fittings may occur. Using hand force and a rocking motion, separate the brake caliper from the anchor plate. Position the brake caliper aside. * Support the caliper with mechanic’s wire. 5. CAUTION: When the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper , new brake pads must be installed to prevent brake noise. The brake pads are one-time use only. Remove and discard the brake pads and spring clips from the brake caliper anchor plate. 6. NOTE: Do not remove the anchor plate guide pins. The guide pins are press fit to the brake caliper anchor plate. If the guide pins are damaged a new anchor plate must be installed. Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate assembly. * Check the guide pins and boots for binding or damage. * Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if it is worn or damaged. Installation 1. NOTE: To move the piston back into the caliper, the LH piston is turned clockwise and the RH piston is turned counterclockwise. NOTE: A moderate to heavy force toward the caliper piston must be applied. If sufficient force is not applied, the internal park brake mechanism clutch cone will not engage and the piston will not compress. Using the special tool (or equivalent such as OTC tool 7317A), compress the brake caliper piston into its cylinder. 2. Clean the residual adhesive from the brake caliper fingers and pistons using the specified brake parts cleaner. 3. CAUTION: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pad or caliper mating surface or damage to components may occur. Do not install contaminated pads. NOTE: Install all the new hardware supplied with brake pad kit. Install the new spring clips and brake pads. 4. Position the brake caliper and install the 2 bolts. * Tighten to 29 Nm (21 lb-ft). 5. If necessary, fill the brake fluid reservoir with clean, specified brake fluid. 6. With the vehicle engine running, apply 89-133 N (20-30 lb) of pressure on the brakes for approximately one minute, to make sure the brake pads adhere to the caliper before any contamination can be introduced. 7. Test the brakes for normal operation.

Inspection 1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 2. Remove the rear wheels. 3. Check the thickness (A) of the inner pad (B) and the outer pad (C). Do not include the thickness of the backing plate. 4. If any part of the brake pad thickness is less than the service limit, replace the rear brake pads as a set. 5. Clean the mating surfaces between the brake disc and the inside of the wheel, then install the rear wheels Replacement 1. Remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder. 2. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. 3. Remove the rear wheels. 4. Remove the brake hose mounting bolt (A). 5. Remove the flange bolts (B) while holding respective caliper pin (C) with a wrench. Be careful not to damage the pin boot, and remove the caliper (D). Check the hose and pin boots for damage and deterioration. NOTE: Do not twist the brake hose and the parking brake cable to prevent damage. 6. Remove the pad shims (A) and the brake pads (B). 7. Remove the pad retainers (A). 8. Clean the caliper bracket (B) thoroughly; remove any rust, and check for grooves and cracks. Verify that the caliper pins (C) move in and out smoothly. Clean and lube if needed. 9. Inspect the brake disc for runout, thickness, parallelism and check for damage and cracks. 10. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the retainer mating surface of the caliper bracket (indicated by the arrows). 11. Install the pad retainers. Wipe excess assembly paste off the retainers. Keep the assembly paste off the brake disc and brake pads. 12. Apply a thin coat of M-77 assembly paste (P/N 08798-9010) to the pad side of the shims (A), the back of the brake pads (B), and the other areas indicated by the arrows. Wipe excess assembly paste off the pad shims and the brake pads friction material. Keep grease and assembly paste off the brake disc and the brake pads. Contaminated brake disc or brake pads reduce stopping ability. 13. Install the brake pads and the pad shims correctly. Install the brake pad with the wear indicator (C) on the bottom inside. If you are reusing the brake pads, always reinstall the brake pads in their original positions to prevent a momentary loss of braking efficiency
