REMOVAL 1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT 2. REMOVE RADIATOR GRILLE Remove the 7 clips and radiator grille. 3. DISCONNECT UPPER RADIATOR HOSE 4. DISCONNECT RADIATOR RESERVOIR HOSE 5. DISCONNECT LOWER RADIATOR HOSE 6. REMOVE RADIATOR NO.2 FAN SHROUD 7. A/T: DISCONNECT OIL COOLER HOSES 8. REMOVE RADIATOR Remove the 4 bolts and the radiator. DISASSEMBLY 1. REMOVE NO.1 FAN SHROUD Remove the 4 bolts and No. 1 fan shroud. 2. REMOVE RADIATOR SUPPORTS 3. REMOVE DRAIN PLUG 4. ASSEMBLE SST SST 09230-01010 a. Install the claw to the overhaul handle, inserting it in the hole in part “A” as shown in the diagram. b. While gripping the handle, adjust the stopper bolt so that dimension “B” shown in the diagram is 0.2 – 0.3 mm (0.008 – 0.012 inch). NOTICE: If this adjustment is not done, the claw may be damaged. 5. UNCAULK LOCK PLATES Using SST to release the caulking, squeeze the handle until stopped by the stopper bolt. SST 09230-01010 6. REMOVE TANKS AND O-RINGS a. Lightly tap the radiator port (inlet or outlet) with a soft faced hammer, and remove the tank. b. Remove the O-ring. REASSEMBLY 1. INSPECT LOCK PLATE Inspect the lock plate for damage. HINT: If the sides of the lock plate groove are deformed, reassembly of the tank will be impossible. NOTICE: The radiator can only be recaulked 2 times. After the 2nd time, the radiator core must be replaced. 2. INSTALL NEW O-RINGS AND TANKS a. After checking that there are no foreign objects in the lock plate groove, install the new O-ring without twisting it. HINT: When cleaning the lock plate groove, lightly rub it with sand paper without scratching it. b. Install the tank without damaging the O-ring. c. Tap the lock plate with a soft-faced hammer so that there is no gap between it and the tank. 3. ASSEMBLE SST 09230-01010 a. Install the punch assembly to the overhaul handle, inserting it in the hole in part “A” as shown in the illustration. b. While gripping the handle, adjust the stopper bolt so that dimension “B” shown in the diagram. Dimension “B”: 8.4 mm (0.34 inch) 4. CAULK LOCK PLATE

Removal Removal Raise and support front of vehicle. 1. Remove: RH front wheel. Engine undershield (if fitted). Lower inner wing panel. Auxiliary drive belt(s). 307: Engine tie-bars. Crankshaft pulley [1] . Timing belt upper cover [2] . Timing belt centre cover [3] . Timing belt lower cover [4] . 2. Turn crankshaft to setting position. Insert timing pins in camshaft sprocket and flywheel [5] & [6] . 3. Slacken tensioner nut to release tension on belt [7] . Lightly tighten nut. 4. Remove timing belt. 5. Installation – -1997 Installation – -1997 Ensure timing pins located correctly [5] & [6] . 1. Fit timing belt in following order: Crankshaft sprocket. Camshaft sprocket. Water pump sprocket. 2. Turn crankshaft four turns clockwise to setting position. 11. Ensure timing pins can be inserted [5] & [6] . 12. Wait 1 minute to allow belt to settle. 13. Apply firm thumb pressure to belt at . 14. Used belt: 36 SEEM units. 17. Tighten tensioner nut to 20 Nm [7] . 18. Remove tension gauge [8] . 19. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise. 20. Ensure flywheel timing pin can be inserted [6] . NOTE: DO NOT allow crankshaft to turn anti-clockwise. 21. Attach tension gauge to belt at [8] . Tool No.(-).0192/SEEM C.Tronic 105.5. 22. Check tension gauge reading. New belt: 51±3 SEEM units. Used belt: 45±3 SEEM units. 23. Install components in reverse order of removal. 24. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts to 8 Nm [9] . 25. Installation – 1997- Installation – 1997- Ensure timing pins located correctly [5] & [6] . 1. Fit timing belt in following order: Crankshaft sprocket. Camshaft sprocket. Water pump sprocket. Tensioner pulley. NOTE: Ensure belt is taut between sprockets on non-tensioned side. 2. Slacken tensioner nut [7] . Turn tensioner anti-clockwise to tension belt. Temporarily tighten nut. 3. Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required Multimeter . Wiring diagram. Test requirements The Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 fuses OK. Battery voltage at least 12.5 volts. All electrical consumers such as, lights and rear window defroster, switched off. Vehicles with automatic transmission, shift selector lever into position “P” or “N” . A/C switched off. Ground (GND) connections between engine/transmission/chassis OK. Ignition switched off. Test procedure Perform a preliminary check to verify the customers complaint. Refer to Preliminary Check Start diagnosis The Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 detects RPM and reference marks. Without an engine speed signal, the engine will not start. If the engine speed signal fails while the engine is running, the engine will stop immediately Function test Connect the scan tool. Switch the ignition on. Using the scan tool, check the engine speed: End diagnosis and switch ignition off. If the specified value was not obtained: Checking internal resistance Disconnect the gray Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 electrical harness connector 7 arrow 7 . Using a multimeter , check the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 terminals 2 to 3 7 see insert 7 for resistance. Specified value: 0.7 to 1000 kOhm Check Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 terminals 1 to 2 and 1 to 3 for short circuits. Specified value: ? (infinity) If any of the specified values are not obtained: Replace the Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor G28 . Refer to Engine Mechanical, Fuel Injection and Ignition 7 Repair Group 13 . If the specified values are obtained: Checking wiring If the manufacturers test box is being used. Perform the following step. Install the test box Adapter F/VAG1598 (68 Pin) VAG1598/22 . HIGH TENSION WIRE RESISTANCE Carefully remove high tension wires from spark plugs and distributor cap. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance of wires while gently twisting wires. If resistance is not to specifications, or fluctuates from infinity to any value, replace high tension wire(s). ADJUSTMENTS DISTRIBUTOR All models are equipped with Mitsubishi electronic ignition with 2 pick-up coils. Air gap is non-adjustable IGNITION TIMING 1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Connect a tachometer, then connect timing light to leading (lower) spark plug of front rotor. Start engine and run at idle speed. 2. Check ignition timing and rotate distributor to correct if necessary. Tighten distributor lock nut and recheck timing. 3. Connect timing light to trailing (upper) plug of front rotor. Start engine and check timing. If not correct, loosen vacuum unit attaching screws. Move vacuum unit in or out to adjust trailing timing. Remove test equipment.

1. Look at the BARO PID. Refer to the Barometric Pressure Reference Chart in this article. At sea level, BARO should read about 159 Hz (29.91 in. Hg). As a reference, Denver, Colorado at 1524 meters (5000 ft.) altitude should be about 144 Hz (24.88 in.Hg). Normal learned BARO variability is up to +/- 6 Hz (+/- 2 in. Hg.). If BARO indicates a higher altitude than you are not at (7 or more Hz lower than expected), you may have MAF contamination. If available, Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) has a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor that can be used as a barometric pressure reference. Use “MAP/BARO” test under “Powertrain,” “Testers and Meters.” Ignore the hookup screen. Connect GP2 to the reference MAP on the following screen. 2. On a fully warmed up engine, look at Long Term Fuel Trim at idle, in Neutral, A/C off, (LONGFT1 and/or LONGFT2 PIDs). If it is more negative than -12%, the fuel system has learned lean corrections which may be due to the MAF sensor over-estimating air flow at idle. Note that both Banks 1 and 2 will exhibit negative corrections for 2-bank system. If only one bank of a 2-bank system has negative corrections, the MAF sensor is probably not contaminated. 3. On a fully warmed up engine, look at MAF voltage at idle, in Neutral, A/C off (MAF V PID). If it’s 30% greater than the nominal MAF V voltage listed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Diagnostic Value Reference Charts for your vehicle, or greater than 1.1 volts as a rough guide, the MAF sensor is over-estimating air flow at idle. 4. If at least tow of the previous three steps are true, proceed to disconnect the MAF sensor connector. This puts the vehicle into Failure Mode and Effects Management (FMEM). In FMEM mode, air flow is inferred by using rpm and throttle position instead of reading the MAF sensor. (In addition, the BARO value is reset to a base/unlearned value.) If the lean driveability symptoms go away, the MAF sensor is probably contaminated and should be replaced. If the lean driveability symptoms do not go away, go to the PC/ED Service Manual for the appropriate diagnostics.
