Programming software update. SERVICE PROCEDURE Engine Control Module Update – Programming (Flashing) Tip: When performing the update programming procedure, ALL DTCs for all systems are erased. DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the update programming procedure first. The following “Update – Programming” (flashing) process may overwrite any “TUNED” ECM programming. A “TUNED” ECM is described as any ECM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Volkswagen of America, Inc. If you encounter a vehicle with a “Tuned” ECM, prior to performing the “Update – Programming” (flashing) procedure: Your Dealership should place the vehicle owner on notice in writing, that their ECM was found to have been tuned, and that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Volkswagen of America, Inc. warranties. For any repair requested by the owner under warranty or outside warranty that requires update programming, which will automatically wipe out the “Tuning” program, your Dealership should advise the owner of the above and get Owner’s written consent (see attached Control Module Tuning form) to the update programming procedure. EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE SERVICE INFORMATION ^LAMP – “EMISSIONS/CHECK ENGINE” – EMISSION MAINTENANCE WARNING MODULE – SERVICE INFORMATION LIGHT TRUCK: 1985-89 BRONCO 1985-87 BRONCO II 1985-89 ECONOLINE, F- 150, F-250, F-350 1985-88 RANGER 1986-87 AEROSTAR ISSUE: The Emission Maintenance Warning “EMW” module operates a light that is located on the instrument panel. For 1985-87 model year vehicles, the light will display the word “EMISSIONS”. For 1988-89 model year vehicles, the light will display the words “CHECK ENGINE”. When the light is lit, it is indicating that the 60,000 mile emission maintenance should be performed. After the maintenance is performed the EMW module must be reset to zero time. Another type of module is the “IMS” module. This module is not part of the light circuit and does not require maintenance. At a predetermined time, the IMS module directs the EEC IV processor to make a strategy change. A third type of module is the “COMBO” module. This module combines the functions of the IMS and the EMW modules. ACTION: Refer to the following module application charts for the specific vehicle application and location of the different types of modules. NOTE: FOR APPLICATIONS NOT LOSTED IN THE FOLLOWING MODULE APPLICATION CHARTS, THE “CHECK ENGINE” LIGHT IS CONTROLLED BY THE EEC IV PROCESSOR. THESE VEHICLES DO NOT USE THE “EMW” MODULE

REMOVAL CAUTION: Prior to removal of the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor, set cylinder No.1 to zero degrees Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Then note the position of the CMP sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy. 2. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring connector from CMP sensor. 3. Remove retaining screws and CMP sensor from sensor housing. 4. If removing CMP sensor housing from the cylinder block, proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing sensor housing, proceed to installation Step 6. 5. Remove hold-down clamp (bolt and washer assembly) . 6. Remove CMP sensor housing from cylinder block INSTALLATION CAUTION : A special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement CMP sensor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper sensor alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. 1. Attach Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A as follows: a. Engage CMP sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on CMP sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in sensor housing. 2. Pre-lubricate synchronizer gear with engine oil meeting Ford specification ESE-M2C123-A prior to assembly. 3. Install sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on ocator tool is pointed approximately 75 degrees counterclockwise from the rear face of the cylinder block. This step will locate CMP sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Rotate Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A clockwise slightly. This will engage oil pump intermediate shaft. Push downward while adjusting Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A until the Syncro Gear engages the camshaft gear. 5. When synchronizer flange is fully seated against block, the installation tool should be facing counterclockwise of engine centerline approximately 33 to 45 degrees. 6. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt) and tighten bolt to 19-30 Nm (14- 22 lb ft)

connected to the vehicle, the TBC module will enter a “sleep mode” but still continue to send a PWM voltage signal to the trailer tow connector every 4 seconds to detect when a trailer is connected. When the ignition key is in the RUN position and the module is in sleep mode, pressing a gain button or sliding the manual switch will cause the module to “wake up”. If a trailer is not connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds, then the trailer icon should illuminate red and the IC message center should display TRAILER DISCONNECTED or CHECK TRAILER. If a trailer is connected to the vehicle, the display should prove out for 3 seconds and then the trailer icon should illuminate green. Inspection and Verification NOTE: A trailer brake emulator tool is available to verify that the TBC module and vehicle wiring are functioning correctly. 1. Verify the TBC system is correctly installed by checking that the vehicle is equipped with a brake pressure transducer on the master cylinder. If the brake pressure transducer is not present, then the TBC system has been erroneously installed. 2. Verify the customer concern. 3. NOTE: The TBC does not function with electric-over-hydraulic or surge trailer brake types. Verify that the trailer brakes are electric-actuated drum type brakes. 4. Verify the stoplamps operate correctly by applying and releasing the brake pedal with the ignition switch in the OFF position and the trailer disconnected. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to Section 417-01 . If the stoplamps operate correctly, proceed to the next step. 5. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart 6. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: * check that the program card is correctly installed. * check the connections to the vehicle. * check the ignition switch position. 7. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool operating manual. 8. Carry out the scan tool data link test. If the scan tool responds with: * CAN, ISO, or UBP circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 . * No response/not equipped for the TBC, GO to Pinpoint Test A . * System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out self-test diagnostics for the TBC and the antilock brake system (ABS) module. 9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Trailer Brake Control (TBC) module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart to continue diagnosis. 10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart to continue diagnosis. NOTE: Always retrieve the continuous DTCs after running the self-test.

Connecting the Evolution 1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Locate the diagnostic connector under the dash near the steering column or under the glove compartment and connect the Evolution cable to this connector. After making the connection, the screen will first display the Edge Products logo and then the main startup displays: The numbers in the upper left portion of the screen represent the version number of the Evolution programmer. The character in the upper right portion of the screen represents the current programmed state of your vehicle. The following letters may appear: I – Programming was interrupted. (See Programming Interrupted section for more information) 1 – Vehicle has been programmed to L1 – TOW. 2 – Vehicle has been programmed to L2 – RACE. 3 – Vehicle has been programmed to L3 – EXTREME.
