Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. for assembly purposes. If the assembly aid is installed, remove the assembly aid and install the rear transaxle mount. 7. With the vehicle on dry pavement, maneuver the vehicle in parking positions. If the steering vibrates/shudders or moans in this test, replace the power steering pressure hose and/or the harmonic balancer. Important: A defective harmonic balancer on the 1995 Buick Riviera can influence steering vibrations after power steering hose installation. Important: When installing the pressure hose on the 1995 Buick Riviera, pull down on the pressure hose at the rear of the engine or bend the hose to allow clearance between the hose and the front of the dash. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1995-1998 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 4. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump assembly (4). 5. Remove the bolt/screws from the retaining clips (3). 6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear assembly (2). 7. Remove the power steering pressure hose assembly from the vehicle. 8. Install the power steering pressure hose assembly to the vehicle. 9. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump assembly (4). 10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear assembly (2). Tighten Tighten the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). 11. Install the bolt/screws to the retaining clips (3). Tighten Tighten the retaining clip bolt/screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in). 12. Install the power steering gear assembly heat shield (1). 13. Lower the vehicle. 14. Fill and bleed the power steering system using, J 43485. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 83-32-09, dated November, 1998. Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and Return (Outlet) Hose Replacement Procedure For 1999-2001 Vehicles: 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in the General Information section of the Service Manual. 2. Drain the power steering fluid. Refer to Draining the Power Steering System in the Power Steering section of the Service Manual. 3. Remove the LH front wheel/tire assembly. 4. Remove the LH lower splash shield. 5. Remove the lower radiator air deflector (engine splash shield, if installed.

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) Removal & Installation 1. The PCM is located between driver’s side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. See Fig. 1 . Disconnect negative battery cable and then positive battery cable from battery. 2. Remove bolts on side of power distribution center that secure power distribution center to mounting bracket. Remove heat shield from outside of battery. Remove battery. 3. Rotate power distribution center toward the engine to disengage power distribution center from rear mounting bracket. Pull power distribution center toward rear of vehicle to disengage power distribution center from front mounting bracket. 4. Allow power distribution center to lay aside for access to PCM. Remove electrical connectors from PCM. Electrical connectors may be removed by squeezing tabs on electrical connector together and pulling electrical connector from PCM. Remove bolts and PCM. To install, reverse removal procedure. Vehicles equipped with engine or transmission computers may require a relearn procedure after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost. Default data is used until new data from each key start is stored. As the computer restores its memory from each new key start, driveability is restored. Driveability problems may occur during the relearn stage. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped, the following driveability problems may exist: z Rough or unstable idle. z Hesitation or stumble. z Rich or lean running. z Poor fuel mileage. z Harsh or poor transmission shift quality. To accelerate relearn process after battery removal and installation, vehicle should be road tested in the following manner: z Vehicle at normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles). z Accelerate at normal throttle position (20-50%). z Cruise at light to medium throttle. z Decelerate to a stop, downshifting and using brakes normally. Manufacturers identify specific relearn procedures. See RELEARN PROCEDURES. Always complete the procedure before returning the vehicle to the owner. RELEARN PROCEDURES Theft Alarm Relearn Procedure 1. Theft alarm relearn is necessary whenever battery is disconnected or dead battery is boosted. If battery is connected or boosted without conducting relearn procedure, alarm system will enter power-up mode and vehicle will not start. 2. 1. Remove the cylinder head (see page 6-30 of the 2001-02 Civic Service Manual), and discard it. 2. Inspect the TDC sensor and the timing belt covers for damage (see page 6-57 of the service manual). Replace any damaged parts. 3. Install the new cylinder head (see page 6-50 of the service manual). 4. Check the engine oil level; add oil if necessary.
2 of 2 01-083 5. Do the Idle Learn Procedure: Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are turned off, then start the engine. Let the engine reach its normal operating temperature (the cooling fan cycle twice). Let the engine idle (throttle fully closed and with all electrical items off) for 10 minutes. 6. If you are working on a 2001 Civic 2-door EX, do the Cruise Control Learn Procedure. Drive the vehicle, and set the cruise control above 40 miles per hour. Continue driving the vehicle for 5 to 10 minutes. NOTE: You can use a smog/chassis dynamometer to do this step instead of driving the vehicle. Do not do this step with the vehicle on a lift.

SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Access blower motor and resistor per the Workshop Manual Sections 412-02 and 412-04. Inspect for evidence of water/corrosion. If water/corrosion are found or parts have failed, replace per Workshop Manual (blower motor 1F1Z-19805-AA and resistor F6DZ-19A706-AA). 2. Visually inspect the Cowl Vent Screen located under the RH windshield wiper to verify if the Figure 1 – Article 04-15-3 screen is fully seated. Inspect the rubber seal on the vent screen which should be fully seated 5. Locate the tape as shown (Figure 2). Remove against the windshield. If the cowl vent screen the tape and apply Clear Silicone Rubber is not fully seated and appears warped, it must TA-32 to the small hole as shown (Figure 2). be replaced (4F1Z-54018A16-BAA) 3. Remove the cowl vent screen per the vehicle model years and build date information. Install the new oil seal. Refer to page 7 – 29 of the ’96-00 service manual or page 7-27 of the ’01 service manual. 4. Reinstall the transmission. 5. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer. 6. Refill the transmission with the appropriate fluid. 7. 2001 models only. Do the idle learn procedure: Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are turned off, then start the engine. Let the engine warm up to its normal operating temperature (the cooling fan cycles twice). Let the engine idle (throttle fully closed with all electrical items turned off) for 10 minutes. 8. 2001 2-door EX and LX models only. Drive the vehicle above 40 mph for 5 to 10 minutes with the cruise control on. (This lets the cruise control actuator learn how much slack there is in the throttle cable.)

This can be accomplished by removing the front two (2) attaching bolts, the rear two (2) attaching nuts and the four (4) Engine Mount # 1 and # 2 nuts (Figure 1). . Modify the Belly Band on the two rear attaching Engine Mount # 1 holes by slotting the holes approximately 1/4″ (6 mm) in a front to rear direction. Use a Drill Bit (Figure 7)

Programming software update. SERVICE PROCEDURE Engine Control Module Update – Programming (Flashing) Tip: When performing the update programming procedure, ALL DTCs for all systems are erased. DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the update programming procedure first. The following “Update – Programming” (flashing) process may overwrite any “TUNED” ECM programming. A “TUNED” ECM is described as any ECM altered so as to perform outside the normal parameters and specifications approved by Volkswagen of America, Inc. If you encounter a vehicle with a “Tuned” ECM, prior to performing the “Update – Programming” (flashing) procedure: Your Dealership should place the vehicle owner on notice in writing, that their ECM was found to have been tuned, and that any damage caused by the tuning of the ECM (including any adverse emissions consequences) will not be covered by Volkswagen of America, Inc. warranties. For any repair requested by the owner under warranty or outside warranty that requires update programming, which will automatically wipe out the “Tuning” program, your Dealership should advise the owner of the above and get Owner’s written consent (see attached Control Module Tuning form) to the update programming procedure.
