Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Vent Solenoid Valve Replacement Pickup Removal Procedure Important Clean the evaporative emission (EVAP) connections and surrounding areas prior to disconnecting the fittings in order to avoid possible system contamination. 1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. 2. Remove the harness clip from the canister vent solenoid (CVS) line. 3. Disconnect the CVS electrical connector. 2004 Chevrolet Chevy K Silverado – 4WD 4. If the vehicle is equipped with a 6 ft box, disconnect the EVAP CVS line from the canister. 5. Remove the CVS clip from the frame crossmember. 6. Push in the retainer and remove the CVS from the fuel tank clip. 7. If the vehicle is equipped with a 8 ft box, disconnect the EVAP CVS line from the canister. 8. Remove the CVS clip from the frame crossmember. 9. Push in the retainer and remove the CVS from the fuel tank clip. Installation Procedure 1. If the vehicle is equipped with a 8 ft box, install the CVS to the fuel tank until the clip engages. Important On vehicles equipped with a 8 ft box, the CVS line is routed below the frame crossmember. 2. Install the CVS clip to the frame crossmember. 3. Connect the EVAP CVS line to the canister. 4. If the vehicle is equipped with a 6 ft box, install the CVS to the fuel tank until the clip engages. Important On vehicles equipped with a 6 ft box, the CVS line is routed above the frame crossmember. 5. Install the CVS clip to the frame crossmember. 6. Connect the EVAP CVS line to the canister. 7. Connect the CVS electrical connector. 8. Install the harness clip to the canister vent solenoid (CVS) line. 9. Lower the vehicle.

Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. 2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels. 3. Remove the rotor. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut retaining cover. IMPORTANT: Do not reuse the nut. A new nut must be used when installing the wheel drive shaft. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: For 2004, manufacturer does not provide a timing belt replacement interval. CAUTION: This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. NOTE: Engine code AEG is stamped into machined pad on front of cylinder block above crankcase breather, near cylinder head mating surface. See Fig. 1 . For all other 2.0L engines, engine code is stamped on transmission mating flange at the rear of the engine. See Fig. 2 . For all engines, code can also be found on the vehicle data plate and on a sticker on the timing belt cover. Remove right hand insulation tray from engine compartment. Remove engine cover. Rotate serpentine belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension. Remove serpentine belt. See Fig. 3 . Turn crankshaft to TDC position. See Fig. 5 . Align TDC marks visible in bellhousing access hole. See Fig. 6 . Remove upper timing belt cover. Ensure camshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with mark on rear cover. See Fig. 5 . 3. Support engine from above or below with floor jack to take engine weight off of mounts. Remove coolant reservoir and set aside. On Golf and Jetta, remove power steering reservoir (hoses attached), and set aside. On New Beetle, pull off EVAP hoses at EVAP canister and throttle valve housing. 4. On all models, remove engine mount from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 7 . Remove crankshaft pulley from crankshaft sprocket. It is NOT necessary to remove center bolt (center bolt is torque-to-yield type that must be replaced if removed). 5. Remove timing belt covers. Remove engine support from front of engine. See Fig. 4

TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKETS Precaution: Timing Chain Replacement CHAIN GUIDES AND TENSIONER ARMS: Replace these parts if grooving in plastic face is more than 1 mm (0.039 inch) deep. If plastic face is severely grooved or melted, the tensioner lube jet may be clogged. The tensioner should be replaced. REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative cable from battery. 2. Drain cooling system . 3. Remove right and left cylinder head covers. 4. Remove radiator fan shroud. 5. Rotate engine until timing mark on crankshaft damper aligns with TDC mark on timing chain cover (Fig. 132) (# 1 cylinder exhaust stroke) and the camshaft sprocket “V8″ marks are at the 12 o’clock position (Fig. 133). 6. Remove power steering pump. 7. Remove access plugs (2) from left and right cylinder heads for access to chain guide fasteners (Fig. 134). 8. Remove the oil fill housing to gain access to the right side tensioner arm fastener. 9. Remove crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. 10. Collapse and pin primary chain tensioner (Fig. 135). CAUTION: Plate behind left secondary chain tensioner could fall into oil pan . Therefore, cover pan opening. 11. Remove secondary chain tensioners. 12. Remove camshaft position sensor from right cylinder head (Fig. 136). CAUTION: Care should be taken not to damage camshaft target wheel. Do not hold target wheel while loosening or tightening camshaft sprocket. Do not place the target wheel near a magnetic source of any kind. A damaged or magnetized target wheel could cause a vehicle no start condition. CAUTION: Do not forcefully rotate the camshafts or crankshaft independently of each other. Damaging intake valve to piston contact will occur. Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected to guard against accidental starter engagement. 13. Remove left and right camshaft sprocket bolts.
