Tightening torque: REMOVAL 1. Loosen water pump pulley mounting nuts or bolts. 2. Loosen two alternator mounting bolts, and detach V-belt. [Except air conditioner equipped model] 3. Remove water pump pulley and pulley cover. 4. Disconnect lead from oil pressure switch. 5. Remove oil level gauge guide together with gauge. 6. Remove crankshaft pulley. To lock crankshaft, use FLYWHEEL STOPPER [manual transmission model] or DRIVE PLATE STOPPER [automatic transmission model]. 7. Remove belt cover plate. [TURBO model] 8. Remove belt covers LH, RH and FR. 9. Removing timing belt Zoom Sized for Print (a) Loosen tensioner mounting bolts on # 1 cylinder by 1/2 turn. (b) With tensioner fully turned to slacken belt, tighten mounting bolts. (c) Mark rotating direction of timing belt, then remove belt. (d) Loosen tensioner No. 2 mounting bolts on # 2 cylinder by 1/2 turn. (e) With tensioner fully rotated to slacken belt by using TENSIONER WRENCH, tighten tensioner mounting bolts. NOTE: Cover TENSIONER WRENCH clamping tips with a rubber hose or waste cloth to prevent crankshaft or pulley from being damaged 10. Remove tensioner and tensioner No. 2 together with tensioner spring. 11. Remove belt idler. 12. Remove camshaft sprockets by using CAMSHAFT SPROCKET WRENCH. 13. Remove right-hand belt cover No. 2, left-hand belt cover No. 2 and belt cover RR. TIMING BELT 1. Check timing belt teeth for breaks, cracks, and wear. If any fault is found, replace belt. 2. Check the condition of back side of belt; if any crack is found, replace belt. A. Be careful not to let oil, grease or coolant contact the belt. Remove quickly and thoroughly if this happens. REMOVAL CAUTION: Prior to removal of the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor, set cylinder No.1 to zero degrees Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Then note the position of the CMP sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy. 2. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring connector from CMP sensor. 3. Remove retaining screws and CMP sensor from sensor housing. 4. If removing CMP sensor housing from the cylinder block, proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing sensor housing, proceed to installation Step 6. 5. Remove hold-down clamp (bolt and washer assembly) . 6. Remove CMP sensor housing from cylinder block INSTALLATION CAUTION : A special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement CMP sensor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper sensor alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. 1. Attach Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A as follows: a. Engage CMP sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on CMP sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in sensor housing. 2. Pre-lubricate synchronizer gear with engine oil meeting Ford specification ESE-M2C123-A prior to assembly. 3. Install sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on ocator tool is pointed approximately 75 degrees counterclockwise from the rear face of the cylinder block. This step will locate CMP sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Rotate Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A clockwise slightly. This will engage oil pump intermediate shaft. Push downward while adjusting Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A until the Syncro Gear engages the camshaft gear. 5. When synchronizer flange is fully seated against block, the installation tool should be facing counterclockwise of engine centerline approximately 33 to 45 degrees. 6. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt) and tighten bolt to 19-30 Nm (14- 22 lb ft)

1. Verify that the timing mark on camshaft gear (1) is aligned with Timing Mark (X) on front housing (3) . 2. Remove top bolt (2) from camshaft gear (1) . Install Tooling (A) in place of the bolt. 3. Remove remaining bolts (2) and remove camshaft gear (1) . 4. NOTICE Do not turn the crankshaft or the camshaft while the camshaft gear is removed. If the front gear group is not correctly timed during installation, interference can occur between the pistons and the valves, resulting in damage to the engine. Remove Tooling (A) . 5. Installation Procedure Required Tools Tool Part Number Part Description Qty A 9U-6896 Guide Bolt 1. Align the hole in the back of camshaft gear (1) with the dowel in the adapter. Install camshaft gear (1) over Tooling (A) . Note: Camshaft timing is critical. The timing mark on the camshaft gear must be aligned with the timing mark on the front cover when the No. 1 piston is at the top center of the compression stroke. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, “Gear Group (Front) – Time”. Verify that the timing mark on camshaft gear (1) is aligned with Timing Mark (X) on front housing (3) . 3. Note: If the timing marks are not aligned, remove camshaft gear (1) and rotate the camshaft until the timing marks are aligned. Install bolts (2) . Remove Tooling (A) and install remaining bolt (2) . 4. 5. Check the backlash between the camshaft gear and the adjustable idler gear. The backlash should be 0.216 ± 0.114 mm (0.0085 ± 0.0045 inch). Refer to Testing and Adjusting, “Gear Group (Front) – Time” for the backlash adjustment procedure. 6. End By: Install the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, “Front Cover – Install”

3.0L INTERMITTENT CYLINDER HEAD CAMSHAFT KNOCK/THUMP NOISE This article supersedes TSB 09-11-6 to update the b. 2002 Land Rover Freelander (LN) Camshaft Timing Belt Service Repair

Service Repair No – 12.65.18 Remove 1. Disconnect battery earth lead. 2. Remove ancillary drive belt . 3. Remove RH front road wheel. 4. Remove 3 bolts securing RH splash shield to body and remove shield. 5. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt LH rear cover and remove cover. 6. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction and align the engine “SAFE” position, notch on crankshaft pulley aligned to the “ARROW” on front mounting plate and the timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears as illustrated 7. Remove bolt securing PAS pipe to engine front mounting plate. 8. Remove 3 Torx screws securing PAS pump pulley and remove pulley. Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print Zoom Sized for Print 9. Remove 3 bolts securing PAS pump to front mounting plate and tie pump aside. 10. Release alternator battery lead terminal cover, loosen terminal nut and disconnect lead from terminal. 11. Disconnect multiplug from alternator. 12. Remove lower bolt and upper nut and bolt securing alternator to front mounting plate. 13. Remove alternator. 14. Remove Torx screw securing idler pulley to front mounting plate and remove pulley 15. Loosen bolt securing lower engine steady to front subframe. 16. Remove bolt securing lower engine steady to sump mounting, release lower engine steady from sump mounting. 17. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt RH front cover and remove cover 18. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt LH front cover and remove cover. 19. Assemble LRT-12-161 to LRT-12-199 and secure with clamp bolt. 20. Insert LRT-12-161 with LRT-12-199 into crankshaft pulley, loosen and remove pulley bolt. 21. Remove special tool from crankshaft pulley and remove crankshaft pulley. 22. Remove 3 bolts securing camshaft timing belt lower cover to cylinder block and remove cover. 23. Remove 2 bolts securing ancillary drive belt tensioner and remove tensioner. 24. Note fitted position of heat shield on A/C compressor and remove 3 bolts securing A/C compressor to front mounting plate and cylinder block. Release A/C compressor and heat shield and position aside. 25. Drain engine oil.
