Clean and check the brake pad mating surfaces in the brake caliper and caliper holder. Check piston dust boot. NOTE: If the dust boot is damaged dirt may have penetrated the cylinder. If this is the case the caliper must be replaced. Checking the brake disc Check brake disc friction surfaces. If the brake disc displays signs of out-of-true, check its lateral run out. Replace the brake disc if it displays signs of heavy wear, variable thickness or similar. NOTE: Minimum disc thickness/replacement limit = 18.0 mm . REPAIR PROCEDURE This repair is compatible with DaimlerChrysler’s Mobile Service Program and does not require hoists or other full service facility special equipment. 1. Remove the serpentine belt from around the idler pulley by rotating the tensioner clockwise ( Fig. 3 ). 2. Remove the purge duty cycle solenoid and wiring harness from the right side engine mount. 3. Remove the two right side engine mount insulator vertical fasteners and loosen the horizontal fastener. DO NOT remove the large nut in the center of the core of the insulator ( Fig. 4 ). 4. Remove the load on the engine mount by carefully supporting the engine with a floor jack. 5. Remove the vertical and horizontal fasteners from the engine side bracket. Remove the engine mount assembly. 6. Remove the idler pulley from the engine mounting bracket. ( Fig. 3 ). 7. Remove the engine mounting bracket. 8. Install a new engine mounting bracket. Torque the fasteners to 40-68 N.m (30-50 ft-lbs.). 9. Install the idler pulley to the engine mounting bracket. Torque the fastener to 40-68 N.m (30-50 ft-lbs.). 10. Properly route and position a serpentine belt onto all pulleys except the idler pulley (Use a new belt if there is any evidence of damage to the original one). 11. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise until the belt can be installed onto the idler pulley. Slowly release the belt tensioner. 12. Install the engine mount; torque the assembly in the following order, engine mount to rail fasteners 68 N.m (50 ft-lbs.), vertical fastener 102 N.m (75 ft-lbs.), and horizontal fastener 150 N.m (111 ft-lbs.). 13. Install the purge duty cycle solenoid to the engine mount. 14. Start the vehicle and let it run for one minute then turn the engine off. 15. Verify the serpentine belt is properly aligned ( Fig. 1 ) 16. If the serpentine belt has moved toward the outboard edge of the idler pulley, further diagnosis will be required. MANUAL BLEEDING 1. Fill master cylinder. Install clear vinyl bleed hose onto left rear bleed screw. Place other end of hose in clean transparent container. 2. Partially fill a container with clean brake fluid. Submerge end of hose in fluid. Pump pedal 3-4 times and hold. Open bleed screw at least one turn. 3. Close bleed screw. Release pedal. Repeat procedure until flow of brake fluid is clear and free of bubbles. Proceed to next bleed screw of brake bleeding sequence. See BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. BLEEDING SEQUENCE PRESSURE BLEEDING Ensure pressure bleeding equipment reservoir is kept at proper level during bleeding. Follow proper bleeding sequence. See BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. Follow equipment manufacturer’s instructions for bleeding. DO NOT exceed manufacturer’s recommended pressure specifications for bleeding. Ensure master cylinder reservoir is full when finished bleeding 1. Ensure all hydraulic brake system components are properly installed and all connections are tight. Using scan tool, check Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) for faults. If any faults are stored, clear CAB faults. 2. Bleed base brake system. See MANUAL BLEEDING or PRESSURE BLEEDING . After bleeding base brake system, using scan tool, select ANTILOCK BRAKES followed by MISCELLANEOUS, then BLEED BRAKES. Follow scan tool screen prompts. When scan tool displays TEST COMPLETED, disconnect scan tool. Bleed base brake system again. Top off brake fluid reservoir and verify proper brake operation before moving vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Verify the condition by road testing the vehicle with the customer. 2. Determine the specific brake issue based on the description in the Service Information above. 3. Follow the appropriate repair procedure(s), listed on the following pages, for your specific issue BRAKE NOISE • Brakes can make a range of noises when applied or released. Some noises are normal and no repair action should be taken. • Use the following descriptions to identify the specific type of brake noise and the appropriate repair: Squeak noise when the brakes are cold: • Usually occurs during the first few stops in the morning. • This is a normal condition. No service action is necessary Squeak noise with the brakes at normal operating temperatures: • listed under Brake Service on page 5 of this bulletin and the appropriate Service Manual procedures. • Refer to technical bulletins specific to the model of vehicle regarding this issue. Toyota Landcruiser Rear Brake Upgrade Package HOPPERS STOPPERS HOPPERS STOPPERS HOPPERS STOPPERS HOPPERS STOPPERS 4 4 4 4 Rear Brake Upgrade Package 78/79 Series Toyota Landcruiser Cause of Rear Brake Problems 1 Combining a drum handbrake and a disc rotor and caliper within the confines of a 16-inch wheel necessitates a small brake caliper and small pad radial section, resulting in an undersized pad area. The standard design has a thin disc and a handbrake of small diameter and swept area relative to the weight of the vehicle. 2 The backing plate and handbrake arrangement allow mud and slurry to enter but not exit, causing abrasives to accumulate and rapidly destroy the handbrake, including its function as an emergency brake. 3 The small disc pad contact area is at odds with the affects of loading under abrasive conditions where rates of wear are parabolic for wear rate versus load. 4 The handbrake design is fiddly and complicated with many small parts that prove to be difficult to assemble correctly. Hoppers Stoppers design solution There appear to be a few possible ways to approach this problem, with a couple of companies proposing designs. Some take unconventional and unusual approaches but appear expensive to purchase and repair; with their application probably only justified if they perform perfectly for a very long time. Hoppers Stoppers’ approach is to stick to proven principles and overcome the basic weakness of the existing design. By all reports, the front brakes on these Toyotas work adequately, and considering their environment do not give significant problems in the field. In our view these brakes are not particularly special in their engineering, just the same basic front brakes that they have made for many years. If we built a rear brake set as solid and even better designed than the front it should last as long. This requires a big, thick disc rotor and brake lining swept area similar to the front
