DIAGNOSIS 1. Start the engine, and let it idle until it warms up. Does the idle fluctuate, or is there a customer complaint of an intermittent idle fluctuation? Yes – Odyssey : Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A. Pilot : Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B. No – Go to step 2. 2. Connect the HDS to the vehicle’s DLC, and check for DTCs. Is DTC P1129 or P0505 stored? Yes – Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B. No – Continue with normal troubleshooting. REPAIR PROCEDURE A 1. Connect the HDS to the vehicle’s DLC. 2. Start the engine, and turn on the HDS. 3. When prompted, enter the VIN and the odometer reading 4. From the System Selection Menu screen, select PGM-FI . 5. From the Mode Menu, select DATA LIST . 6. Scroll down the list to PSP SWITCH . Watch the reading in the Value column. 7. Check for a broken power steering pressure switch wire by wiggling the P/S pressure switch wire harness at the switch while you check the Value column reading. •If the reading changes between on and off when you wiggle the harness, go to step 8. •If the reading does not change between on and off when you wiggle the harness, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B. 8. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and remove the right front wheel to access the power steering pressure switch. 9. Disconnect the connector from the switch, and release the harness clip from the body. NOTE: You may need to disconnect the Secondary HO2S connector to free the end of the harness from the body. 10. Lower the vehicle, and pull the harness up for easier access to make the repair. 11. Remove the rubber seal from the connector, and remove the terminals from the connector noting the GRN wire and BLK wire locations. 12. Remove the tape from the corrugated tube and the wires up to the harness clip; mark the wires at the end of the corrugated tube

Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. 3. Conduct the PRNDL Logic Input Test by connecting fused jumper wires between ground and the appointed cavities of the TR Switch connector. Is the repair complete? — Go to Instrument Cluster System Check — 4 1. Remove the I/P Cluster. 2. Connect a J 39200 DMM (continuity) between the I/P Cluster connector and connector C2 of the TR Switch to those circuit(s) that connected to the faulty PRNDL indicators. Is continuity present in the circuit(s) tested? — Go to Step 6 Go to Step 5 5 Locate and repair the open in the circuit(s) that are faulty between the TR Switch and the I/P Cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems. Is the repair complete? — Go to Instrument Cluster System Check — 6 Connect a J 39200 DMM (continuity) between the I/P Cluster connector and ground to those circuit(s) that connected to the faulty PRNDL indicators. Is continuity present in the circuit(s) tested? — Go to Step 7 Go to Step 8 Locate and repair the short to ground in the circuit(s) that are faulty between the TR Switch and the I/P Cluster. 1. To confirm the client’s complaint, test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably with a slight incline. Set the cruise control between 35 and 40 mph, and monitor the engine rpm using the vehicle’s tachometer, or use the HDS to take a snapshot of the engine rpm. 2. If the engine speed fluctuates several hundred rpm while maintaining a constant vehicle speed, disconnect the EGR valve and retest the vehicle. •If the fluctuation is gone, refer to the EGR troubleshooting in the service manual. •If the engine rpm still fluctuates, and the transmission does not have any other symptoms (shifting problems, slipping, transmission DTCs) go to step 3. 3. Drain the transmission fluid, then strain it through a paint strainer. •If you find little or no contamination in the strainer, the ATF is OK, even if it smells burnt, is discolored, and/or the magnetic drain plug has small chips, flakes, or metal fuzz on it. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE A . •If you find large amounts of contamination (pieces of metal or friction material) in the strainer, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE B . REPAIR PROCEDURE A 1. Remove the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Install the torque converter: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 3. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 4. Do the idle learn procedure: •Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off. •Start the engine, and let it run until it reaches its normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles twice). •Let the engine idle with the throttle fully closed for 10 minutes. REPAIR PROCEDURE B Follow the IN-WARRANTY EXCHANGE steps in service bulletin 90-009, Automatic Transmission In- Warranty Exchange Program , to order a remanufactured A/T, replace the failed A/T, and return the failed A/T core. 1. Remove the transmission: •Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T REM , and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Clean the transmission cooler. Refer to service bulletin 89-015, ATF Cooler Cleaner . 3. Install a remanufactured transmission: •Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual , or •Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL , and select A/T Installation from the list. 4. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION ). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM . 5. Transmission Repair 1. Remove the transmission. Refer to the appropriate SI procedure. 2. Disassemble and inspect the transmission. Refer to Unit Repair Automatic Transmission – 4L60-E/4L65-E. Important: Subject: 4L60-E Automatic Transmission/Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder, Water in Transmission (Repair Transmission and Replace Transmission Filler Tube, Level Indicator and Seal) Models: 2004-2005 Buick Rainier 2003-2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Models 2003-2005 GMC Envoy Models 2003-2004 Oldsmobile Bravada 2005 Saab 9-7X with 4.2L In-Line 6 Cylinder Engine (VIN S — RPO LL8) • Visible rust on the transmission fluid level indicator. • Visible water in the oil pan. • A milky white substance inside the pan area. • Spacer plate gaskets that appear to be glued to the spacer plate, valve body or case. • Rust on internal transmission iron/steel components. • Remove the surge tank cap and examine the coolant for signs of contamination with transmission fluid (the coolant will have a milky, not clear appearance). • If the coolant has a normal, clear appearance, the radiator should not be replaced. • The cooler can also be tested by following the Coolant System Leak Test procedure (SI Document ID# 877442). Do NOT replace a radiator without verifying that the transmission oil cooler is leaking. If water or coolant is found in the transmission, the following components MUST be replaced. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator WITH the transmission REMOVED from vehicle. 1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube from the transmission. 2. Replace the transmission fill tube seal, P/N 1259475. 3. Replace the transmission fill tube, P/N 15000220, following the appropriate SI Document for Transmission Installation. 4. Replace the transmission fluid level indicator, P/N 15069769 when appropriate during the transmission installation. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator with the transmission in the vehicle. 1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement (SI Document ID# 1364496). 2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the filler tube. 3. Remove the filler tube nut (2) located on the right side of the engine. 4. Remove the filler tube from the vehicle. Tip It is necessary to remove the two A/C line (suction line / low side of muffler hose) retainers and reposition • Replace all of the rubber type seals. • Replace all of the composition-faced clutch plate assemblies including the band. • Replace all of the nylon parts (Thrust Washers). • Replace the torque converter. • Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter. • Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J 45096. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-07-30- 052C or newer – Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flush and Flow Test Essential Tool J 45096 TransFlow .
the A/C line to allow proper clearance for installation of the new transmission fluid fill tube. 5. Remove the A/C line at the oil level indicator tube bracket nut. 6. Remove the A/C bracket bolt from the engine lift hook. 7. Reposition the A/C line upward. 8. Install the new transmission filler tube, P/N 15000220, into position but NOT into the transmission at this time. 9. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information (SI Document ID# 744862). 10. Remove the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 11. Remove the transmission heat shield from the transmission. 12. Remove the old filler tube seal from the transmission case. 13. Install a new seal, P/N 1259475 into the transmission case. 14. Position the new transmission filler tube into the transmission seal. 15. Install the transmission heat shield to the transmission. 16. Install the two bolts securing the transmission heat shield to the transmission. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft). 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Install the nut securing the filler tube to the stud. Tighten Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in). 19. Reposition the A/C line into place. 20. Install the A/C line bracket to the oil level indicator tube stud and secure the bracket with the nut. 21. Install the A/C line bracket to the engine lift bracket and secure the A/C bracket with the bolt

Using the right arrow key, toggle the VVTi actuator “ON.” 5. If at this point the vehicle does not run rough and/or stalls when the active test is performed, proceed with Repair Manual P1349 VVTi Fault Isolation Procedure (FIP). If the vehicle does stall and/or runs rough, this indicates the the VVTi control system is operating. Proceed to replace the VVTi actuator following the repair procedures listed on the Technical Information System (TIS): Engine Mechanical Section, Camshaft, Replacement The camshaft timing gear should come in the unlocked position from the factory. If it is difficult to install the camshaft timing gear, the lock pin may be engaged. To disengage the lock pin, apply and hold approximately 20 psi of air pressure at the oil feed hole located 90 degrees clockwise of the oval slot. (See Figure 1.) Once the pin has released, turn the interior assembly counterclockwise. (See black arrow in Figure 1.) B. Put the camshaft timing gear assembly and the camshaft together with the straight pin off the key groove. C. Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly (as shown in Figure 2) while pushing it lightly against the camshaft. Push further at the position where the pin fits into the groove. NOTE: Be sure not to turn the camshaft timing gear to the retard angle side (in the clockwise direction). D. Check that there is no clearance between the end of the camshaft and the camshaft timing gear. E. Tighten the camshaft bolt with the camshaft timing gear fixed. Torque: 54 Nm (551 kgfcm, 40 ftlbf) F. Check that the camshaft timing gear assembly can move to either side and is not locked

SYMPTOM There is a vibration at idle or harsh engagement when shifting the transmission between between Park, Drive, and Reverse. PROBABLE CAUSE The front hydraulic engine mount may have deteriorated and torn. PARTS INFORMATION Front Engine Mount Assembly: 1998-02 Accord V6 – P/N 50810-S87-A82, H/C 7981657 1999-04 Odyssey – P/N 50800-S0X-A04, H/C 7978927 2003-05 Pilot – P/N 50800-S3V-A82, H/C 7984560 WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION In warranty: The normal warranty applies. Failed Part: P/N 50810-S87-A81 H/C 5438593 Defect Code: 01102 Symptom Code: 04501 Skill Level: Repair Technician Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work. DIAGNOSIS 1. Bring the engine up to operating temperature, and fully apply the parking brake. 2. Have an assistant view the top of the front engine mount while standing to the side of the vehicle. Shift the transmission to Drive. With your foot firmly on the brake pedal, quickly depress the accelerator pedal and release it. Your assistant should look for contact between the top of the engine mount and the bottom of the front engine mount bracket, and listen for noise from that area. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Drive the vehicle onto a lift, but do not raise it. 2. Odyssey – Remove the intake manifold cover and the front ignition coil cover: •See page 9-4 of the 1999-04 Odyssey Service Manual. •Online, enter keyword INTAKE , and select Intake Manifold Removal and Installation from the list. 3. Odyssey – Remove the radiator cover: •See page 10-16 of the 1999-04 Odyssey Service Manual. •Online, enter keyword RADIATOR , and select Radiator and Fan Replacement from the list

PARTS INFORMATION Start Clutch Kit: P/N 06220-P2M-305, H/C 7073448 Honda ATF-Z1 (seven quarts required): P/N 08200-9001, H/C 6512628 REQUIRED SPECIAL TOOLS Start Clutch Remover: T/N 07TAE-P4VA120 Start Clutch Installer: T/N 07TAE-P4VA130 WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION In warranty: The normal warranty applies. Operation Number: 219167 Flat Rate Time: 6.0 hours Failed Part: P/N 22020-P4V-325 H/C 5192349 Defect Code: 034 Contention Code: C99 Template ID: 02-003A Skill Level: Repair Technician Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work. REPAIR PROCEDURE NOTE: Make sure the work surface and the CVT are completely clean. Use lint-free towels, and use a dedicated, clean solvent tank for cleaning the CVT parts. If you do not keep everything very clean, the repair may not be successful. 1. Soak the new start clutch assembly in Honda ATF-Z1 for at least 30 minutes. 2. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. See page 14-304 of the 1996-00 Civic Service Manual. 3. Cover with clean shop towels all of the openings in the transmission and anything else that might get damaged by water and cleaning chemicals (axle openings, breather, and electrical connectors). Clean all the dirt and grease off of the transmission before you start disassembly
